Mexican Fender Jazz bass body, P-bass pickups, P-bass neck. Surf green, string through body (which I prefer.) Came with a free Fender gig bag. There was only one volume knob, and the solid plastic pickguard rather than with part chrome wasn't what I would choose.

Bright, punchy sound. I couldn't have made it any better.

The action was God-awful and the pickups were low, but i took it down to a local guitar shop and had them go over it and make the necessary changes. Also, the pickups were slanted and there was a tiny gunga embedded in the pickguard. Maybe it was a mistake buying a Mexican made, but I had no choice. Otherwise, she looked beautiful.

Never dealt with Fender, but I had to take her to a guitar shop to get her adjusted, and they were extremely friendly. They even gave me some complementary picks! How lovely.

Loved the sound, and the flaws were easily and inexpensively fixed. A fine bass for anyone who enjoys punk rock or alternative rock. It beat the crap outta my horrible Hondo bass that I bought for nothing to learn on. Oh, how I loathe that bass. It was worth the days of hard, back-breaking labor in the hot sun to earn the money for it.

Finish crack by neck plate due to overtightening. Neck did not sit well in pocket; failed 'credit card' test. You could slide a credit card between neck and body in the joint. Truss rod adjuster did not appear to work.

I'm sticking to Rics from now on. I have 2 4001s and 3 4003s and thought I'd get a Fender for fun. It wasn't any fun. I guess "Made in Mexico" was a dumb choice. The only thing they know how to make down there is margaritas.

This bass is perfert for any punker, but with a little work on your amp it could do just about anything. I play alot of punk pop, but this thing could handle jazz and rock just fine too. By the way I didn't buy this bass but I played one for an hour at guitar center (literally). I played through a 50 watt Ampeg and I gotta say it sound AWSOME!!! Just like Hoppus too (becasue of the Ampeg) Very Punchy which I absoulutly love!!!!! This bass doesn't have as much variety as a P-Bass but I still love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Action was a little too low for me, but my frienly guitar center associate raised the sadles just a tad then it was PERFECT!!!! The Surf Green looked really nice, same with the Daphne Blue. I am dissapointed that the hot pink was not realease and fender gives us the Shell pink which is still the best color to get but it's not as nice as the hot pink. Now this was a flaw that I saw, but this wouldn't happen to you in uless you purposely do it.... Where the pickups come out, I saw a little peice or cookie or something stuff inbetween the pickguard and pickup... pretty disgusting. I'm given this a 9 becasue there is not a hot pink.

I put a strap on a jumped up and down while playing, no problem what so ever-unlike my essex. Hardware was excellent. The Strap buttons seemed solid but you shoiuld always use strap locks-regaurdless how good the bass is. I would defianlty use this without a backup with no worries.

2002 MARK HOPPUS SIGNATURE BASS CONTAINS ONE HOT SEYMOUR DUNCAN QUARTER POUNDER PICK UP AND IT IS VERY LOUD. MINE CAME IN SURF GREEN WHCH WAS THE COLOR THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR(THE SAME COLOR OF THE PALACE IN ASBURY PARK). JAZZ BODY WITH THE SD QP P BASS PICKUP. MAPLE NECK WITH ROSEWOOD FRET BOARD. THERE IS JUST ONE VOLUME CONTROL SO YOU MAY HAVE TO ADJUST THE TREBLE OR BASS ON YOUR HEAD. IT ALSO CAME WITH A CUSTOM GIG BAG.

THE SOUND THAT I GOT WAS A HIGH-END JOHN ENTWHISTLE SORT OF SOUND. GREAT FOR PLAYING SOLOS AS IT CUTS THROUGH THE MIX. I AM USING A FENDER BASSMAN HEAD WITH HARTKE 210 AND 410 CABINETS. WHEN PLAYING SOMETHING JAZZY I HAVE TO TURN DOWN THE TREBLE ON THE HEAD A BIT. GREAT SUSTAIN. I PLAY AUTHENTIC ROCK AND ROLL.

This review is to simply counteract the idiocy of some reviews ::cough::Robert 2 reviews down::cough:: of this bass. To say that this bass doesn't have bass sound? What amp where you playing through? The field set up by Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups is one of the fattest botom ends you can get. Through a tube amp, this bass sounds remarkably similar to Mark's custom shop model. RE: A tone knob. Do you actually use a tone knob? I've never bothered, I use the EQ on my amp. Some bassists don't even bother with a volume knob. Mike Dirnt runs the signal straight from the pickup. Which subsequently makes this bass sound like a bass. Once again, this is a siganture model, which means it was made for a specific person. You don't like it? Too bad. Get off your soapbox then. This bass wasn't made for you.
Fender doesn't make production custom instruments for just anyone. Look at the Artist signature instruments they have now. Do you know why they make them? Because they're unique. Because they sound good. (For a good example of the Hoppus bass "The Rock Show" really lets the bottom end shine through).
Is this the best Fender bass? Not by a long shot. Is it the worst Fender bass? Not by a long shot. Is it worth the money? If you like the features, yes. It's better balanced than a P bass and has an Alder body as opposed to every other instrument coming out of Mexico, plus an American series bridge, and string thru configuration.
Other stuff? The original prototype model made for Mark. (Pink, skull and cross bones inlays, he slapped an Atticus sticker on it and hangs a Famous SAS keychain off the string tree) has the same pickguard and no control plate. The control plate was added on his subsequent models.
My advice. Play other Fender basses before you buy this one.

I bought a 2002 Mark Hoppus bass.Made in Mexico.Basic Jazz body,Precision neck.Seymour duncan quarter pound pickups.Vol control.Passive pickups.Flatwound fender strings.Reg scale.Delux gig-bag.I has great features. If you are scared of buying a bass w/o a tone control...think of how much u use it now, practically never. It usually stays all he way up anyway.Sceptics are dum for saying this is minimalistic. This bass has everything you need!

O man this is its VERY strong point.Any color on this bass will not show fingerprints. Its Gig-bag is a pain in the ass to zip.The nylon gets caught in the zipper. So the bass is rock solid. The gig-bag is not so great so I give it a 9.

A feature, to my mind, is an addition to what should already come standard. You DO expect that any new car you purchase will come with a steering wheel, engine, and tires. Similiarly so, you expect a bass to come with such essentials as a neck, body, pickup(s), and volume and tone knobs. But wait, Mark prefers the simpler things in life, even if it means having a custom bass. Its a gimmick, and the lack of features will only impress the most novice of players.

With the fattiest part of my thumb I played as close to the neck as possible, yet it still sounded like I was playing next to the bridge with a brass pick. Its definitely not bass, and if anyone expecting to be a bassist need not look here. However, if you are a desperate kid looking to get a slice of ass by grabbing an instrument and being in a "band"...well, this is your 400 dollar ticket to sweet sexual bliss.

I have been playing for only two years, but experience doesn't always exqual knowledge. I know whats good, whats bad, and whats put on the market to make a buck. You can't blame Fender or Blink182...Mark gets free basses and Fender gets to bank on little punkers desire to emulate mediocrity. But its ok, thats life. There are much worse things out there.

The features on this bass are a volume knob and a seymour duncan quarterpound pickup, basically p-bass hardware on a jazz bass body, the body is made from alder and the neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard, my bass is in surf green, and it came with a free gig bag.

This bass suits punk which is great as i'm in a punk band called Analdave (www.analdave.cjb.net), I use the bass through a carlsbro 120 and it sounds awesome, no noise or buzz from the pickup which is good, this bass only has one sound which is middley, trebley and has alot of clarity, and no string drowns out the other, would be nice if it had a tone knob may make modification at a later date.
