Features : 1
MAde in Mexico, uglycolor, only a volume knob (no tone) seymourduncacn
sb-2 quarter pound p pickup. alder body maple neck, all hardware is just standard fender stuff

Sound : 5
This bass has only one sound which i think works only for punk, which is what most people my age play these days. i played it out of a swr workingmans 15 and it was quiet (it's a p pickup it should be)
I'm sure it cuts thru on stage but isn't much fun to play solo on, the seymour duncan quality is evident tho.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 3
the action was high, the pickup was low and the intonation was horribly off. ugly color but thats in the eye of the beholder

Reliability/Durability : 8
i'm sure you could kick the crap outta this bass and it would be just fine

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 1
unless all you ever play and ever will play is punk don't buy this. it's just not usefull or worth the money. it's features reflect it's namesakes skills and you could do alot better for a lot less$

nice twngy punk sound. use yorkville b200 200watt amp, sounds sexy. no noise or vibrations, nicely set up out of box. bright sound. only one sound on bass but amp can make up for it, unless you have only one volume knob on your speaker, you can change the mid, etc. from amp.perfect sound for me.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
good set up out of box. pickups kicked ass. no flaws.

Reliability/Durability : 10
what can i say, its a fender not a plastic dollar-store ukalelee. very durable.

This is a good bass. If you don't want to play punk, then don't buy this guitar. I have this guitar solely for punk. It really sounds great through an Ampeg amp. You can change the action on the guitar from the bridge. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAY PUNK, DON'T BUY THIS GUITAR.

Sound : 10
IF YOU WANT A GOOD PUNK SOUND THEN GET THIS GUITAR. AND AS MARK HOPPUS SAYS, "THIS IS ALL I NEED FOR MY SOUND."

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
THE ACTION ON IT OUT OF THE FACTORY WAS PERFECT. THE PICKUPS WERE SET JUST AT THE RIGHT HEIGHT. AND THE COLORS ARE GREAT. THE PINK ISN'T THE SAME AS MARK'S, BUT IT IS STILL GREAT. AND THE REASON IT ISN'T THE SAME IS BECAUSE MARK DIDN'T WANT IT TO BE RELEASED.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I WOULD USE THIS GUITAR IN A GIG DEFINATELY. EVEN WITHOUT A BACKUP. IT IS A FENDER AND FENDER QUALITY IS GREAT.

Customer Support : 10
I HAVE NEVER HAD TO CONTACT THE COMPANY PERIOD.

Overall Rating : 10
THIS IS A GREAT GUITAR FOR PUNK. IF YOU DON'T LIKE PUNK THEN DON'T BUY IT. IF YOU WANT TO PLAY OLD FOGEY MUSIC THEN BUY A GUITAR WITH MORE "VERSATILE" FEATURES.

Features : 1
How about lack of features, one pick-up, no tone, awful colors, heavy tuners, and a stell stamped bridge.

Sound : 2
Very unversatile, only one tone produced. Would not recommend for jazz, or any other type of music that isn't punk.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 2
The setup was terrible, the action was high and the intonation was almost an entire half step off after the 10 fret. The pick-up height was low resulting in lower output. The finish is one ugly pastel option after another.

Reliability/Durability : 8
No idea but if this thing was engineered for the type of crowd I think it is, it should last quite awhile in it's terrible intial shape.

Customer Support : No Opinion
no idea

Overall Rating : 3
If you are looking for a decent bass that can play punk as well as other types of music than don't get this bass. It will limit your playing ability. I would suggest getting a standard P-bass for a $389. You get a better more versatile bass for $100. Don't be fooled by the easter egg paint this bass is not better than it's mexican brethren.

This is a recently issued bass by Fender, although a prototype did appear at Summer NAMM 2000. It's made in Mexico, and from what I can tell, is available in surf green, daphne blue (like the colour of Crest toothpaste), or shell pink (like the colour of an eraser). Every Guitar Center I've visited recently has five or six of them in stock, and they appear to be selling well. This bass has a Jazz bass Body with a single P-Bass pickup. The neck is "B" width at 1.65", which is the same as on all modern P's. A vintage P is "C" width, which is 1.75", and vintage and modern Jazzes are "A" width at 1.5". Body is made of alder, and it's topped with a white mother of toilet seat pickguard. There is no chrome control plate; the pickguard just extends into that area, and there is a volume knob with no tone control. A feature-packed bass this is not. Luckily, it does have a Seymour Duncan/Basslines Quarter Pounder pickup. Hardware, etc. looks to be the same quality as Fender's other Mexican-made basses. Not a bad thing.

One thing about the guy who "designed" this bass. It's the guy from Blink182. I'm pretty much neutral about the band (immature toilet humour doesn't really pose much of a threat to the well-being of people in the world), but anyhow, I think Fender did something right on how to label it. The only identification with Mark Hoppus is his name printed in capital, block text on the neck plate. This is much nicer than putting a logo on the front of the headstock like on the Steve Harris signature P-Bass. Anybody who detests the player but likes the bass can easily purchase a blank neck plate, or even one of the normal ones that says "Fender - Corona, CA". Props to Fender on a good move.

Sound : 2
The Basslines Quarter Pounder is a highly regarded pickup. It is passive, but it is wound hot and thus is very high in output. I only tried it through the demo amps at GC, so I guess one of the new Fender Bassman combos and an Ampeg combo. I've owned a P-Bass with a Quarter Pounder that I loved, but I could just not get used to how this bass sounded. The Quarter Pounder pickup is known for a scooped midrange, and it delivered in this case--with a kind of gross, nasally brightness. Like I said, I've had a bass with the same pickup and quite enjoyed its tone. I figured out that the difference is that I tend to roll off the tone control completely. This gives me a more undefined thump, which reminds me of a "real" Precision Bass. Unfortunately for me, this bass doesn't have a tone knob. On the bright side, I doubt that this bass would have any problems with cutting through in a live setting. However, it doesn't sound very good to my ears--no warmth at all.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 3
All of the examples of this bass that I tried had the infamous Made in Mexico setup. I've heard stories of people who've gotten the Mexico instruments that were perfectly set up right out of the box, but have yet to encounter one myself. It doesnt' seem to be a big change in humidity or temperature from Ensenada Mexico to my GC store in southern California, so I'm not sure what's up. To be fair, the setup on a few factory new USA Fenders I've purchased was not so great. Because all of the Hoppus basses in the store had action about one mile high, the playability was not good. Pickup height was probably A-OK, and finish was fine. However, I think that, for a bass designed primarily for new players, setup is extremely important. A new bassist might pick up this bass and conclude that all basses have action this high, leading to discouragement and disinterest.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
With no real-world experience with reliability, I can't rate this accurately. It is a pretty simple bass with a minimum of components though, so I imagine it'd be alright in reliability.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Sending an email to FMIC is like sending an email to an alien in outer space. Don't know about the warranty or anything on this instrument though, so again, I'll put a no rating.

Overall Rating : 5
My primary purpose for writing this review is to balance out the overwhelmingly positive reviews that seem to come from newer players. One guy in here said that he's been playing for four months, but he thinks he's good, and that this is one of Fender's best instruments! Another review says that it has a transparent finish (it doesn't), and that the alder body is what makes it heavy(!). I don't want to criticize these people, and I'm sincerely happy that they've found a bass that's good, but I don't think the reviews here give the whole story. I have had extensive experience with a variety of electric basses over the years (over 50 basses in the last year) and my current collection includes an MTD 535, Mike Lull Modern 5, Mike Lull P4, Lakland 4-94, Wal Mach II, and Music Man Sting Ray 5. I have what I think is a very good P Bass in the Mike Lull, and I've also spent a lot of time with a 63 Fender Precision. The Mark Hoppus model sounds like neither of these. This can be good or bad depending on the sound you're looking for. It doesn't have the characteristic P-Bass warmth or punch; instead, it has a really bright, twangy sound. Also, there is no way to remove the twang onboard. For me, the lack of a tone knob is a negative. Overall, there are better basses for around $500. My recommendation would be the Reverend Rumblefish.

It may be extremely striped down but it is the greatest bass that I've ever played. I like the jazz style with the P-bass pick-ups. It does the job for the songs that I play, mostly punk like Green Day, Sum 41, and Blink 182. But it works for playing Rage Against the machine, Nirvana, and stuff like that. It came with a gig bag so that was a plus. All in all the Mark Hoppus signature is the best bass money can by.

Sound : 10
It has incredible tone. It goes great with my style of music. As for noisy there is no setting that I could consider it noisy. I've never used it in a studio but I have on stage and it sounds great. But if Mark uses it in the studio it must be good.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The bass came from the shop looking great. The pick-ups were set great and it was perfect. It was the quality that I've come to expect from Fender.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've already used it for live playing and it has helb up very well. I couldn't preform without it. The paint job is great the finish will last for a while. It is very reliable. I've had it for about 3 months and the neck's only bent once. I don't have to worry about using it with out a back up because it's good.

Customer Support : 10
This was the first time dealing with them and they were helpful and friendly. I haven't had the need to get it repaired because its so reliable. It's under a 1 year warrenty in which they will replace it if anything happens to it.

Overall Rating : 10
I think my other comments speak for themselves when you talk about overall rating.

This is my first Fender bass. The sound and performance that i get out of it is awesome, even on my little 10W amp. It's single volume know makes it so that i dont have to play around with tone for the sound that i want. The Seymour-Duncan SPB-3 quarter pound pick-ups were well worth the price which is alot of what you pay for in this bass. The maple neck is easy to coordinate around when playing up and don the fretboard. Although, the alder body makes it alot heavier than some other basses.

Sound : 10
This bass is perfect for what i play,(blink-182 mostly) because it is most likely the bass that Mark wrote the music on, so it sounds the same. Like i said, The sound is great even with my 10W Crate amp. It's much louder and clearer than the Crate that came with the amp. This bass really only has two sounds, and that depends really on your picking technique.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
When i bought the bass from the dealer, the neck and body were just about perfectly aligned. I didnt have to adjust the pick-ups because they sounded just right. So far, I havent found anything wrong with it and ive had it for about two months.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I strongly feel that this bass could withstand just about any job that you assign to it. Everything on it is great quality, and nothing seems to be wearing out anytime soon. The strap buttons are good, but it really depends on the strap that you have in terms of stability. I.E., the strap that i use has pretty big holes so sometimes it falls off. I dont think that i would need a backup for this because it has proven strong and reliable to me.

Customer Support : 8
I have only dealt with Fender once, and that was to try and get a gig bag for free which the dealer wanted to charge $40 for. But the spokesperson was very polite and helpful to me. I havent brought it in for repairs yet, and hopefully i wont for a while.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for about 4 months now, buti think im pretty good. If something were to happen to my Mark Hoppus P-bass, id be pretty upset. i dont think that i would buy another one because it just seems like too much money to spend more than once. The price was worth it though. I love the sound and performance that i get out of this, but i sometimes wish it had a tone selection. All in all, this is one of the best guitars made by Fender

ok, when I saw this bass in musicians friend, I knew I had to have it. It had just come out this month, it was also what they said was a catalog "exclusive". Having more then enough run ins with musicians friend, I had vowed to never order from the place again so I only looked on sadly. So then just yesterday, I stopped by Guitar Center and was prepared to purchase a new american series jazz bass. I was looking around the shelves when (gasp) there it was comepletely unoticed by the bystanders. Needless to say I bought that on instead of the american saving a couple hundred dollars along the way. It had 22 frets, quarter pound seymour duncan, 2002 just realeased, jazz body, p-bass neck, string thru body, etc... oh an the one volume knob. I got mine in daphne blue.

Sound : 9
suits my style just fine I am not a big fan of effects so I really dont use them. I am using it with an old ampeg practice amp. It is bright and punchy and FULL of tone. The only thing I dont like it the fact that it doesnt have that much variety. Its also noticibaly quiet and doesnt give ny feedback.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 5
ok, this is where the bass gets a slightly lower score. The factory set up sucked nuts. The action was WAY SUPER high. One of the tuning pegs were loose and there was a slight angle in the pickup. Nothing to severe but Im picky.

Reliability/Durability : 8
I would replace the strap buttons, but it would definatly withstand some live playing. All Fenders are built to last, I hope.

Customer Support : No Opinion
never had to deal with fender

Overall Rating : 9
Ive been playing 5 years, or actually 2 on bass, I started out playing guitar. If it were stolen or lost Id buy another one with the money left over, the other one that I was gonna buy was much more expensive. Oh by the way, I despise blink 182, Im not some wannabe 13 year old, but if there was anything Blink ever did right, it was their sound, I love the way Marks bass sounds so I decided to get my own.

I got the 2001 Mark Hoppus bass for x-mas, its a mexican p-bass, with a jazz body, sea-foam green. Its a 20 medium jumbo frets - 4 string. Theres only 1 knob (volume). Bassman pickups - maple neck, great playing. It has a transparent finish, it also has a String-thru bridge style which i appricate alot. This neck is a bit bigger than i was used to, and its hard to play unless ur fingers are real loose. it came with a gig bag and a few bargains from Guitar Center.

Sound : 8
This is the worst part about the bass to me, i mean when they said it plays like Blink they werent kidding, that might be good for some people, but i like to vary my sound. I use a small pevey bass amp for it, and most of the time i use my BP200 with it. I've had problems with it buzzing but i think thats becuase i play like a neanderthal and beat the hell out of it. It also has a tendancy to leave the notes hang out for a while, the tuners slip more than my old one.
There is a HUGE differance if you are planning on playing on stage rather than through studio, so keep an eye out.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The bass was set up PERFECTLY, i have no problems with the pickups, THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH IT Fender did a great job.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The durability on this bass is great, itll stand up for what you want no buts about it. The finish will last, the strap buttons are almost too solid. I havent had to have the neck adjusted, and i wont for a while (hopefully). If you travel light this is for you, i would bring a backup b/c im a "just in case" person.

Customer Support : 10
It has a one year warranty, i havent had to deal with them at all which is good.

Overall Rating : 10
Ive been playing for over a year now, im an amature, im a Blink fan like none other so i took the chance in a second for it. I also own a Peavey p-bass, a BP200 processor, drum set, a Fender strat, a Fender amp. One thing i want done to this bass is some inlays. Its under manufaturers warrenty, so theres your answer to if it was lost. I love the color, body, and fretboard, BEAUTIFUL work. I hate how big the frets are. I did compare the bass to other, it was great to it leauge, the one that showed above the rest was a MusicMan bass, and a Warwick bass, but they were more expensive.
