MIM 2001, standard features. I think what the previous reviewer is trying to say is DO NOT BUY A USED MIM BASS! Everything he talks about is completely opposite of the point he's trying to get across. True, the pickups are made the same length instead of a longer one at the bridge and it's true that the neck has to be taken off if you need to adjust it (which I don't seem to have to do that often) but the fact is these are on basses made from the early 90's to 2000. 2001 and up Fender started using normal sized p/up's and the truss-rod adjuster is under the pickguard now...not on the bottom of the neck. I've replaced the bridge with a BAII and the standard p/up's with Duncan hot stacks and the sound is just so much better than an American made model that it seems ridiculous to pay over a $1k for one.

Without the mods the bass is just mediocre but still a deal for less than $400. With the new pickups and bridge and wired master volume, blend, and stacked bass/treble; the sound is just completely different. The bass has about the same output as active basses do, the bottom end is more present and growling than any Warwick, and the treble is cutting but not harsh. There is no noise from the pickups at any position and there's no battery to replace ever. I love to play it but it cost me some $$$ to get it where it's at...however, I paid a total of $750 compared to an American bass without the $300 p/ups at over a grand!

Replacing the bridge and the nut breathed life into this bass. But replacing the pickups made it live. Like I said before, it's not a bad deal as a standard jazz bass, but if you swap some parts out for new ones, great things can happen.

Its pretty basic. Two volumes and a tone, four strings, junky bridge, wimpy pickups, the standard. Not a lot to it. The neck gets adjusted on the headstock on this one (cause its a 2000). If you're going to get a mexican jazz bass, get one USED because the new ones have a bottom of the neck adjuster! Therefore, you have to take the neck completely off in order to adjust the trussrod (which you will do frequently).

I dig the jazz bass sound. The sound is one of the biggest weaknesses in this bass though. If you're going to get one, replace the pickups immediately. With the proper pickups (and be careful, standard jazz pickups aren't the same size and shape! Mexican pickups are the SAME LENGTH. Aero Instrument (aeroinstrument.com) is the only company that makes direct replacements for mexican pickups!)

This bass feels oh so good. Its got a great feeling neck, it plays really fast, and is definitely the feel that I am looking for. The finish is ok, pretty much standard really. Nothing to exotic in the standard. This bass is NOT built very well though. You will end up adjusting the truss rod pretty regularly to keep it playing right. Plus the hardware is pretty mediocre. The tuners are alright, but replace that bridge ASAP.

Its fairly reliable, but do change the pots. They will die on you after a while. I know someone who was at a gig with this kind of bass and his pots just crapped out right before the gig. Otherwise its pretty durable. It does need a good neck adjustment every now and then.

Haven't dealt with them, but I imagine they wouldn't be all that helpful. After all, you can't really get customer support unless its a small company and you can talk to the guy who built the thing.

No matter how you look at it, the jazz bass is the bass to have. I love the feel, the sound is groovy, and it looks cool. If you are going to get one of these though, get one USED (made before 2001) so you don't have to go through the hassle of getting the neck taken off for the adjustments. Plus, the Fender quality goes down the older it is, I've noticed. Also, if you get one of these you will want to replace the pickups, pots, and bridge. I suggest Aero Pickups, whatever spiffy pots your techy says, and the Leo Quan Badass II bridge. With those alterations, (and some good cosmetic stuff, such as a new pickguard and knobs), this bass will whupp any basses butt under $1000. Everyone needs a jazz bass, and personally I don't think the Americans are much better than these. If you need a FENDER jazz bass, Mexican will surely do. Be careful though! There are TWO KINDS of Mexican basses! There is the Mexican Jazz Bass Standard, and the Standard Jazz bass made in Mexico. They are made different ways, with different sized pickups, and different demensions. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH ONE YOU ARE GETTING

I bought this base new. It is a 2001 Mexican Jazz with 20 frets, passive electronics, vintage-style bridge and standard tuners. It's a sunburst model, very attractive. Everything else about it is standard Jazz, from th e controls to the neck.

Great sound out of my G-K 400RB-3 and Bassman 410 Cabinet. All the classic Jazz sounds are there, from pure funk on the bridge pickup to thick slap with both equally on. It could use stronger pickups, and maybe a better bridge for better tone, but at this price, can you really complain?

From the factory it was set up fairly well, but later on I got a lot of buzzing from the E string, so I sent the Bass to my local Long and McQuade for a free set-up, as the Bass was still under warrenty. There were no construction flaws noticable, and to this day i haven't had a problem with the hardware.

It's a fender, man! It's like a rock. You could drop a house on it and it would still be in playing condition. All the hardware is built to last, and the Finish looks like it will never fade. I would depend on it with no back-up, but i'm only 14 so I don't do professinal gigs, but I jam with my friends and play with my school's Jazz Band, and we do a lot of gigs, and it's holding up real well.

Overall, a great Bass for the money. I would suggest buying one of these and adding better pickups and a better bridge than buying a American Jazz; it's cheaper to do this, and you end up with a base just as good. I compared it to the Mexican-made P-Bass, and i thought the Jazz sounded a hell of a lot better. Before i had this bass, I had an Ibanez and a Quest, and this Jazz blows them away. If it was stolen, I would buy another or find the person who stole it and kick there ass! Don't be afraid of the MIM Fender's, there good.

This instrument is a 2000 Fender Standard Jazz Bass, manufactured in Mexico. It's got 20 frets, rosewood fingerboard, custom installed Seymour Duncan Vintage J-Bass Pickups, custom installed Badass II Bridge, and a midnight blue finish..... which looks more like purple if you ask me.
Sound
:

With brand new strings on, it has a very growly and booming sound to it. The boominess might be related to my 1x15 amp though, I'm not sure. Using a pick like I do, and with the right amount of wattage, this bass can really cut through the mix with it's distinctive growl. Going fingerstyle however, things get muddy... and you lose a lot of articulation. So, unless you have some sort of filter to tighten up the sound, I wouldn't recommend playing this bass with your fingers.

Okay, here is this bass' downfall.... I bought it from Musician's Friend, and right out of the box, the neck was messed up. It has a bit of a backbow to it, and the skunk stripe (right term?) on the back is indented torwards the middle of the neck. Due to these issues, I'm forced to set my action fairly high, which I don't like. Also, I had to replace the bridge with a better one... because when I'd play hard, the low E saddle would just collapse, screwing up my tuning in mid-song. Finally, the highest notes on the G string get a really high frequency buzz on them, I don't know what this attributed to... but when I go for that high D, it comes out sounding like a yellow-jacket or something... not good.

Despite it's shortcomings, this bass has been my workhorse for almost 3 years. It's been thrown, bashed, smacked, and slapped... and it's still in working condition. A little maintenence along the way helps though. I had to glue the strap button screws in because they always came undone, but other than that it's all good.

I've been playing a number years now, I own a Squier P-Bass (my first bass ever) and a Galveston Violin Bass (McCartney worshipper). If I had to pick just one of the three to take on tour, it would definitely be this Jazz Bass. It can fit in pretty much any genre of music I have to play. However, if it were stolen, I'd more than likely use that as an excuse to upgrade... possibly to an American made J-bass... or a MM Sterling.

2000 MIM Jazz Bass 20 frets. Stratocaster knobs for each pup and a single Stratocaster tone control, wich i really hated, HOW DARE they put strat knobs on anything other than a strat, so i got those replaced with real jazz knobs as soon as i got the chance. Jazz style bi-pole passive pickups i dont get any feedback or hum with these so im happy, maybe ill try out some EMG's or something after reading other peoples reviews and suggestions. Rosewood fretboard on a maple neck. A beautiful dark soft sunburst (one of the best sunbursts ive seen on a MIM J-bass, got lucky i guess). After playing a P-bass copy for a number of years, the jump from the regular wide Precision neck to the thin Jazz neck just makes your hand float and glide through the fretboard. Nice big stock tuners i like 'em. Didnt get any included accessories, probably shouldve taken the box. The bridge could be a WHOLE lot better, i think Fender should strike a deal with Leo Quann and make a killing off the Badass bridges! I recommend you get one immediately after you walk outta the store. The neck is where i really messed up in that I didnt bother to check for warpage, after a while i noticed it was warped (too late to return it) even though i probably wouldnt, seeing that its my first fender and it immediately became my baby. And besides i like the high action the warp gives me i got used to it with the cheap P-Bass copy i had for so long.

This bass just thunders! I play it through a rig my dad's old co-worker sold to me, it's a Yamaha EQ, with a with 600 watt Sunn amplifier powering two 15 inch Carvins, its no SVT 1200 watt ampeg 8x10 (my dream amp), but its still a match made in heaven, i pass the time shaking frames off the walls and rumbling stuff off of shelves. Its a very quiet bass as far as hum and feedback are concerned almost none. I play a variety of stuff anything from soft bluessy Zepp to dirty grungy Nirvana to some clean and bright bluegrass. This bass does it all for me it can be real bright and clean to real boomy and thunderclappish, the mid ranges can be a bit better i think with some improved pups im sure this can be remedied. As far as my music style is concerned i just turn up all the knobbs and im set to go with maybe just dropping of the tone in some softer songs.

The set up wasnt that great, like i said the neck is warped, i have yet to get it intoned (im a slacker, what do you expect im in a rock band!), but just like i said before if youve been reading this, i like playing with the high action the warpage gives me. As far as flaws, other than the neck and the crappy bridge, its good enough for me.

This thing is a solid piece of tree trunk! Ive dropped mines more times than i care to mention, amps have fallen on it (I dont know how)its been dragged around the house (damned kids)and it still stays in tune. Along with the cockroach the only other things that will survive the apocolypse will be Fender Jazz Basses and Gibson's RD Artist Basses! (oh yeah and my '88 Toyota Pickup will also be there to haul these things around). This is my primary bass until i get my RD Artist, which will most likely be in a long time seeing that theyre highly sought after items and sell for too much money! I would play this J with no backup bass anyday of the week. Hardware is solid and still shiny after almost 3 years of abuse. Strap buttons are excellent in the 3 years ive had it, never once has it come loose. Finish like i said is beautiful, I hope it doesnt wear much, which i dont think it will anytime soon! Very solid bass, they might as well mold them outta steel.

I know some of you are gonna be surprised with the rating im giving Fender. Heres why: I wanted to buy a black pickguard to make mine stand out over the bland white stock pickguard it comes with. First of all i couldnt find the damn things, looked all over, finally had to special order it through Guitar Center (damned monopoly i tell you). Second; it took more than 2 months to get, and when it finally got there it was the wrong one! They sent me an 11 or 12 hole reissue pickguard and it didnt even fit! it gets worse, it camed packaged in what seemed like saran wrap, not even a decent fender bag! So i send it back and finally i get the right 10 hole, 3-ply black/white/black pickguard, so im happy....until i put it on, the damned thing didnt fit! So until i have to deal with them again and get treated better ill give them a big, fat, nasty, ugly "1"

Ive been playing for about 7 years now, i own my nice Yamaha, Sunn and carvin rig. I really wished i woulda checked out the neck a little more before i bought the thing. If it were stolen id go out and replace it right away and then hunt down the bastard who stole it and kick his ass and run him over after i finished....heheh. What i love about it is that its mine, its sounds, looks, and works beautiful. I hate the warp in the neck. My favorite feature of the thing is its curves very...sexy...hehe. As far as comparing it to other basses, i went straight for the J the only thing i compared it to was an american J-Bass, wich is outta my financial reach! Go out and buy one if you havent yet!

I have always loved jazz basses and this is my third. The first was a custom shop built for me in 1980 (swapped it for a car 5 years later - silly move). I always thought that was the greatest. The Squire Standard was OK but hummed (that only lasted 6 months). This one though is superb. When I got it, the guy in the shop didn't know they had only just brought out new pickups and these sound good, fat and DON'T HUMM when you only have one on. A commom problem with passive JBs.
I love the sound and it is definalty as good as my Custom Shop one was.

This is where the J-bass comes to life. I play everything from funk (RHCP) to emo (jawbreaker) to classic (zeppelin, eagles), and i can dial in the right sound for all of them. Im playing her fingered through an SWR LA-15, and it is great. No noise at all (very nice), except for when i touch my CD caruosel or dont touch the bass with my hands at all. Wierd, but i dont mess with my CD player on stage (cause my cd player is at home), so it doesnt matter much. I can get this thing to growl and shake the house. It can do ANYTHING i want it to, except for sound like a Music Man (which is hard to do without the humbucker). Love it, except i wish it had an active EQ (which costs more, so i dont have one).

It was a floor model, so god knows how long it had sat on the rack. When i first picked it up, the neck was bowed a little, and the action was a little high. The guy took it in the back, and in 5 minutes, he had it set up perfect. Took it home, and the factory had overdrilled one of the holes for the screw in the pickguard. Took it back, the tech fixed me right up. The finish was great. Nothing chiped or broken. All the metal parts are nice and shiny too.

I got a great deal on this bass. Musicians friend has it for $385. Some store in myrtle beach had it for $425. My hometown shop had it for $330. Ive been playing for 4 years, so i know enough to separate the men from the boys. I was playing a Squier p-bass, and this J-bass kicks its ass to the moon and back. If it was stolen (becase i would never loose this baby), i would most likely buy another one. Or kill whoever stole it... Like i said, i wish it had an active EQ, because they make everything sound great, but thats besides the point. A word of advice: Never ever buy guitars mailorder. Amps are ok if you tried them out first in a shop. Getting your guitar by mailorder leaves you with whatever you get. You cant just take it to the shop and fix it up in 10 minutes for free, plus you have no idea if you like it if you've never played one before. I might like to put in a badass II bridge and some seymour duncan p-ups, just to give it the boost from great to kickass. Overall, it kicks. Hands down.
