I play lots of rock and metal and stuffs, but I also played for my school's jazz band, and it sounded great for both. At home, I use an old Peavy amp that I got from a family friend. According to him, it's from sometime in the 80's and might have been sent down a flight of stairs, but my bass sounds great with it. I have no idea what the school's amp is, but whatever it was, my bass sounded AMAZING with it. I occasionally get some white noise from the lights in certain places, but with a few adjustments, the noise goes byebye. I've found that it gets basically any noise that I've tried to replicate that you can make without the use of an effect pedal.

When I first got it as my first bass, it was perfect, but since, I've had to raise the action some, mostly because I've been dropping it lower lately. I liked how the pickups sat when I got the bass, but they're kinda easily damaged. Some kid at school took a chunk out of one of them with a chair, through my gig bag. The finnish is great though. It has withstood everything from my ceiling to my little sister attacking it with a music stand to my studded belt. Even with as many scratches and dings it has, the finnish is still prettyfuls.

This thing is like a tank. I've hit it so many times on the ceiling that I've lost count (my house was designed for midgets, not bass guitars), brought it to school and let my classmates handle it, left it in the car for two days in the middle of the summer, dropped it a lot, and accidentally sent it down the stairs. It still plays like the day I got it. Never really played with it live for anyting other than school jazz band, and the teacher frowned upon the bassist jumping around or moving out from behind the drums much. All the hardware seems like it's going to last me for a while. At first, I doubted the solidness of the strap buttons since my strap was falling off a lot, but now that I've gotten a new strap that wasn't basically shredded, that problem has disappeared completely. I've never had to adjust the neck, but then I've only had this bass for about a year and a half now, so it probably will eventually. If I had gigs to play, I definitely would use this bass without a backup, but considering the fact that this is the only bass that I actually own... Definitely a dependable bass. It went down a flight of stairs once in its gigbag and made it out alive.

Never need it. Ever. I think it has a 1 year warranty... I only took it in once and that was because I had left it plugged in for four weeks straight when we went on vacation and I didn't know that it was an active bass...

I have now been playing a year and a half, and I've played many other bassess (mostly a Squire P-bass and an Aria Pro II STB and some random Ibanez at the guitar store that I fell in love with). This is one of my favorites to play (ties with that other random Ibanez). Got it for $230 and it was definitely worth it. I wish that I had asked whether it was active or passive, but since I was new to the whole buying a bass thing, it never crossed my mind. That could have saved me a heart attack later... If this bass were stolen, I would hunt down the poor fool that took it and get it back, leaving the theif not exactly in the best condition ever... The thing that I like and all the other bass-people that have played this like it the neck. It's so slender and playable. When I got it, I compared it to a Squire P-bass, a $300 Fender, one other bass that I don't remember, and a $3,000 Ibanez (I was scared to even hold that thing) and out of all those, I thought that this was the best. It just felt, I don't know, right for me to play it. It was comfortable for me to hold and easy for me to play and I thought that it just looked awesome. My midget can't play it though. It makes her look like a monkey! :)

Ok, I've had this bass about 8-9 years and since then, this bass had experienced tough times, ding it on the road and home million times, it has been exposed to cold/winter(overnight in the car etc.), rain, dirt etc. and I even drop it(from 3 or 4 feet) So even then it has been held very, very well. Neck is straight, intonation is little off and strings rattles little bit(not much) But I havent adjust anything over the years, NEVER!! I think thats pretty good for a 160??? bass!

Bought it used, swapped it actually. All the features are covered below. Made in Indonesia.
The Transparent Red finish still looks great. I had to use Goo Gone to lift some unknown grunge off of it, then it sparkled. One of the prettiest finishes ever.
Full scale, 34" neck. Low action, no buzz. EQ dial for "Phat" sound. One split and one solid pickup, a P-type and a J-type Single coil, but I heard not a bit of hum or static. Rich sound!
Active electronics, takes a 9-V battery housed in a tiny recess covered with a 2-screw plate. Easy to change out. I like that.
The wiring diagram and manuals online at Ibanez' website were essential to understand it's makeup. I might swap out the capacitors to effect a more radical tone change.
Chrome hardware. Agathis wood body makes it weigh a bit less than maple would. VERY ergonomic and comfy body shape.
Maple unfinished but smooth neck, dark rosewood fretboard, medium frets. Graphite nut; nicely adjustable bridge mechanism. Big angular tuning keys.
Nice balance when you strap it on. UNBELIEVABLE duration of sustain.

No noise, no hum, perfectly intonated. Fast neck. Gentle on the fingers. Wonderful range of tone. Really solid sounding. I have no idea what the other more negative reviewers were thinking: this beauty's awesomely good. And I've been playing a while!
Came with round wounds. I wonder if anyone out there uses flats on this model? Does it sound like the classic Beatle Bass tone?
Some I read, like to go to really light gauge on this one. I'm sure it still sounds heavy as you want.

This was the one I should have bought initially when I was looking to move from short to long scale. Very good. Not a beginner's bass at all. It's gonna last me for a long time. I love it! For looks, playing ease, and incredible sound, this one's a total winner.
Just picking it up feels wonderful. And the action is so much easier than the bass I traded in, It took King Kong to fret that monster... This is like a vacation for the fingers.
You can get these new for less than two hundred. Great!

This four string bass is the first I've owned. I've played it for almost five years and nothing has gone terribly wrong with it. It has two single coil percision pickups and one jazz pickup, so it's extremely versatile - although slightly limited as I play through a Behringer BXL1800A 180 watt amp. It didn't come with strap or straplocks, had to buy those on my own. It's a good bass to start out on, and it's easy to learn the control configuration, volume control, percision tone control, jazz tone control, and boost. no tuner was included, although I already had one by coincidence. My particular GSR has worn beautifully, the neck plays and looks better than it did a year ago, and it hasn't picked up any scratches so far. The only downsides are that there are a few unfixable rattles that will come up every once in a while, and the stock bridge is whimpy, so if I were to invest in a bigger/better bridge that would cut out some of the rattle, i could buy a new bass. I'll never get rid of this bass, simply for the fact that it's so well made.

This versatile bass will fit any music style I play. It even equaled the sound played by my Fender American Standard Jazz bass that I use for jazz band. My first and prefered style is rock, metal, and punk. I have developed a unique sound with the GSR200 that fits all three categories. It sounds heavenly until it give out a little rattle in the middle of a riff. Othe rthan that, it sounds great. It is very versatile, in that it can have a bright, poppy sound for jazz, or a deep growl for metal.

no problems with the factory set-up, although it did develop that previously said rattle after about 3 years, so I got it serviced at a local music store. They took out all the rattles, if only temporarily. The neck is infintessimally warped, which causes another slight rattle in the second fret. Other than that, awesome

Between the two pickups on this bass it can handle almost any style of music. I found I particularly like it for slap and reggae. I played it through a yorkville XM200C and it sounded great. The bridge pickup can be noisey but it's usually not too bad.

This is were I had problems with this bass. The action from the factory was way too high and I could never really find a height that felt good. The intonation was also off when I got it. The fretting was not the greatest, the frets did not seem to be filed properly at the edge of the fretboard. The plastic nut was also poorly placed/designed/made either way everytime I went from higher on the bass into first position the corner of the nut would dig into my hand. I had to end up filing the corner to a more round shape. The overall feel of the bass was cheap.
That being said the finish was very nice, I particularly liked the satin neck.

This bass has definatly been good for live playing it is solid and stable and I have used it on many ocassions without a backup. That being said the hardware will likely need replaceing at some point. I found that the tuners tended to go out of tune faster than other cheap basses I have owned. The bass will probably also benefit from a nut replacement as the stock nut is cheap plastic. With some work I don't see why this bass shouldn't last a long time.

This was a very good beginner instrument but I am glad I got a chance to upgrade. I have been playing for seven years and played this bass for about one. Soundwise it rocked but I couldn't get over the cheap feeling and the generic look of it. With a little work this probably could have been a very, very good bass but stock it is simply a very, very good starter bass.

I play classic rock and metal ranging from bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin, up to bands like Metallica, Black Sabbath, and anything in between. I currently only own a 15watt Crate practice amp. Bearing in mind that this is essentially an entry-level bass played through a cheap practice amp, it sounds remarkably good for what it is and what it's played through. There is a variety of tones you can get, I find that this is mostly by turning each pickup up and down, the tone doesn't seem to do much. The boost is also fairly weak, but noticeable. I never use it. However, it can play anything I want it to, so it's good enough for me. When my amp is turned up high, I get a lot of buzzing.

I bought this bass from a shop, and the setup was almost perfect. I lowered the action slightly after having played for a while, other than that, flawless.
I haven't done anything to the pickups.
The bass was constructed perfectly, no blemishes at all.
I can't really fault it in this category.

I have had this bass for a bit over two years. It has been transported in a gig bag, not a hardcase, from one side of the UK to the other frequently and is still almost unblemished. It looks a bit worn, but that's just becuase I've played it. The few marks it does have are from when I've accidently been a bit rough with it- ie, they were my own fault! My first strap used to fall off every now and then, but then I bought a better strap and that solved the problem. Seems the strap was the problem, but it's something to bear in mind. In the whole two years I've had it, I have only had to alter the setup once. I would use this bass happily live (if I played live, I'm still teaching myself to play), it is my only bass so I don't have a backup, but that really would not bother me at all.

I haven't had to deal with the shop I bought it from or Ibanez since nothing has gone wrong. I don't think this bass came with a warranty, but I can't really give an opinion about something which I've never had to experience. And hopefully never will with any bass I get, if it's made well enough I shouldn't need to.

As said, I've had this bass for just over 2 years. That's when I started playing, this is my first bass, currently my only bass, and I have been teaching myself. I have been very happy with it. There isn't much I don't really like about this bass, though the pickups are a bit weak, but with an upgrade this bass would be excellent. I have played more upmarket basses in shops since, and to be honest, they do feel better to play. I will upgrade eventually, though I may well keep this bass anyway. If this bass were lost or stolen, I would probably buy a more upmarket bass, but only because I want to get one eventually anyway and not because I don't like this bass. I do. Overall, I think it's a very impressive bass for the cost and would definately recommend it to a beginner.

I think i will be changing the pickups to dimarzios soon though. I use it through a Rocktron RB-30 bass amp and it sounds decent for a beginner bass. I play a vast genre from death metal to jazz to classical to rock to slap to soloing. And well, this lil bass can do so much, it basicaly can play just about any style. I play it through an Ampeg BA115, I think it mainly might sound good because of the amp. The sound is rather strong, nice highs, nice deep clear lows. My only problem with this bass is that the sound is a little bit dry and can use some more juice, but well not that much because I mean it is still an excelelnt instrument. I've been playing it for going on six years, and its my only bass I've had, my first bass. If you are a beginner, I would seriously recomend this bass over any other. Mainly because the price is rather affordable and it is a good beginner bass so you can decide what style you feel more comfortable with playing.

...Well, I did have to raise the action of the bridge a while back because I was getting some fret buzz. I have had to adjust the truss rod once, but that was completely my fault because I but a 120 gauge E string on. The finish is beautiful, but you know, after six years it will get pretty dinged. And the finish isn't realy that durable. The straplocks do suck though.

In the many many gigs that I've played her with, she never caused me any problems. Except for one time but it was my fault because my E string was over a year old and I play hard so it broke. But other than that, this thing is build like a tank. I've dropped it like countless times. Once it fell completely out of my bag down some stairs, and I thought, "Its the end," but well, the finish got a little scratched, but she held together pretty well. I actualy rarely have any tunning problems. Those tunners hold in pretty well.

I do play seriously and all, but basicaly I mean I play it through a good amp and it sounds pretty well for practicing. I think that this is great bass for beginners or for practicing. I actualy seriously think you don't realy need to buy 1,000 dollar basses to sound good. It has to do with your own experience. I mean if you can play, than you can make any piece of crap sound good. I mean honestly I would prefer this over a warwick.

I bought my Ibanez about a year ago. It was my first electric bass (I started on a regular acoustic guitar and moved to a Washburn acoustic bass for a little while before buying my first electric.) I bought mine at Guitar Center and i came with NOTHING, not even a box or owners manual. Like everybody else mine was made in Indonesia, has active pickups 34" scale, bass boost, etc. The first attraction was the pretty trans red finish-- I HATE red, but damn this thing was sharp. For the price these features are pretty hard to beat. Although the pickups are kinda junky.
Sound
:

Again, for the price this thing is hard to beat. Before I bought it I spent a lot of time in music shops playing around with a lot of basses and this one was a no brainer 5 minutes after i picked it up. I have also spent a lot of time since playing around with other basses, some significantly more expensive (as I am now looking to upgrade to a bass I can grow into-- thinking about the Cord Curbow-- if you're not familiar do your self a favor and check it out) and i have been hard pressed to find a bass with as much boom for the buck. I am playing through a piece of shit fender 100w amp with a 1x15 cab, so my ear may be a little off, but the sound is similar through my 10w Crate practice amp. I play a punky, funky take on metal and hard rock. We started out old school punk and this bass was all in the world I could have asked for. Except for major volume differences between strings and almost sour feels from the 6th to the 12th frets on the A string. We then started moving to Pantera style metal and playing in drop D. That's when things got ugly. The drop tuning on the E string makes for a fairly sloppy rumble, especially when played open, and cutting through a drop tuned Ibanez guitar with heavy distortion became harder and harder. We have now moved on with a new singer, to incorporate my punk/ funk influences, the guitarist's love of crunchy guitar-driven metal, and the singer's ear for techno and hip-hop beats (I know that's a tough combo, but when you get it right it works-- which is why I am trying to upgrade my gear now, as our music is now significantly more bass and beat driven). With this combo, being dependant on clear, strong bass, the weaknesses in sound are becoming more and more pronounced. That said, new pickups and a preamp will probably fix my problems. Had to do over again, I would still buy this bass and will recommend it to any beginner I run across.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
Control knobs have loosened a little over the course of a year of hard playing, but otherwise I have no complaints... especially when you consider the fact that this is a $250 bass stamped with the name of a reputable company that has earned their reputation among hardcore fans (Korn plays Ibanez). I have had trouble getting my action playable without defeaning fret buzz and the neck needs adjustment fairly regularly, but being that this is more of a beginner bass, just take that as an opportunity to learn how to adjust a guitar neck. As far as finish goes, I still think that this is one of the prettiest guitars I have ever laid eyes on, regardless of price. I haven't counted my dings and scratches and I don't intend to... guitars are meant to be played and that's what happens when they are played. One of the most beautiful sights in rock and roll is to see an old guitar worn to the wood and scratched in places and showing all the years and miles and chords from it's life.
Reliability/Durability
:

I have no complaints, and as long winded as I have been really have nothing substantial to say on this subject. Nothing has yet fallen off during normal play, but I am not in the habit of throwing my guitar around and always transport it in a case. I am going to give it a good faith rating based on the fact that nothing has in fact fallen off or come loose during normal use and I don't foresee it happening.
Customer Support

Never had to deal with Ibanez. Tried to get Guitar Center (where I bought it) to help me set up intonation and the neck, etc, and all I got was the run around and a reminder of exactly how much Guitar Center really is the WalMart of guitars. That is not a complement.

Overall this is a solid bass with decent sound, a good finish, built to pretty high quality specs at a damn good price. I will personally hope to keep mine long enough to hand it on to my daughter (it will break before I sell it, and I will probably fix it if it does). I love mine even if I may have outgrown it a little. Everyone who has played mine has fallen in love with it. All-in-all, this is an awesome bass for the price and would make a great beginner's axe or an inexpensive and appreciated addition to even an expert's collection. Sounds good picked, fingered, or slapped.

I play a wide variety of style from prog and metal through to funnk, soul and jazz. The bass is quite bright sounding so coupled with a braight Crate amplifier to me it sounds perfect for slap, and with some treble rolled off and the neck p-style pu on full and the J off, the bass can fit easily into more deeper jazz or rock peices.
Had this since feb and ive changed it quite a bit but nothing major, raised the pickups closer to the strings and covered them with thin layer of acrylic to be able to use a billy sheehan-esque technique, this also made the bass have a bit more growl when the treble is rolled off.

Again i changed quite a bit here,
original gloss black finish has now been spraypainted chrome silver (us lefties get crapy choices of colour... so i got bored lol)
The action was fairly high, so i adjusted the saddle height and now use much lighter strings to eliminate buzz (30-90 stainless)
Tapping is now very easy to execute as are legato passages if yo uare more of a lead bassist or a soloist
THe control knobs fall off quite easily, but new knobs or some superglue can fix that

bass already has a few dings and dents but has never been truly gigged
(small colege/school performances only)
but for a cheap bass u cant expect it to be the most hardy, tough bass out there
strap buttons were replaced with straplocks, but thats a pretty standard thing to do anyways, nothing rong with originals, just more secure with straplocks

A good bass for my style of music (blues rock) good punchy sound with deep warm bass sounds at the bottom end and bright at the high end . i would consider this to be by far the best bass guitar ever made at this price level, suitable for the beginner right through to pro depending on the style you like to play. great for studio work but i've also played lots of live gigs with it and it has never let me down . It has a nice fast action and its easy to move around from botom to top, the neck is small so its very easy for a beginner to learn, i wish i had one of these 30 yrs ago when i started playing, even now i really enjoy the feel and playability of this bass and prefer it to my other much more expencive fender, sure it dont have all the bells and whistles, and sure its got a budget price tag, but damn it goes so nice without all that .....

This baby has been around the block a few times and has never been in a hard case but it still plays just like it came out of the factory where it was set up very well... i've made adjustments over the years as needed but have never had any real issue with it ever right from day one. She has got a few dings etc as i've never taken extra special care of it due to the price ..... what can i say ..it take a knockin and keeps on rockin

This has been my prefered rig since i've had it .... plays live gigs really well and has never let me down in 6 yrs, the finish still looks good from a distance but she has a few dings when you look close, yep with all the abuse its had i'd say its built like a brick shithouse, and i have no problem using it at a gig with no backup.... but lets face it even the best can break when you least expect it..

Sound is good, even though I'm playing it through a small practice amp. Sounds deep and rich on neck pickup, bright and sharp on bridge. Tone off makes a very dull sound, so keep it on 3/4 or full. Can play anything from blues to Stranglers

Okie, features are all out there so you can take a look, i won't waste space by repating what others have repeated. P/J pickup configuration. Passive, foil-bridge, those kind you would find on Fender basses. 4-string, 34" scale. Made in Indonesia.
Sound
:
7
For a beginner's bass it doesn't sound like one. Sounds more like an intermediate bass for it's price. Full, with a defined mid-range punch that will cut through a mix. Sound is pretty bright. Standard sounds you would find on a normal bass but i don't like the stock pickup sound. It sounds somewhat hollow if you hear carefully.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The finish was great! Trans red colour. No scratches whatsoever. Neck was horrible when it was out of the box, it was warped like anything so i had to do a bit of adjustment when i got it back. Adjusted the action and did some cleaning up with the intonation and it was good after that. Pickups had a little hum to it but it wasn't that bad.

Live playing i think it would, hardware i can't say much but i believe that it's substantial if it were to last. Let's give it a year or so of live/hard playing. Finish is amazing, i'd always loved Ibanez's finishes. Strap buttons are solid so far but i believe after a while the front horn strap button will come loose somehow.
Dependable, but i'd bring a backup just in case. The truss rod had to be adjusted ALOT when i got it back but Ibanez necks always hold up well, i speak from experience. =)

It was my friend's bass actually but i'm privilleged to hold it for a while. I'd always believed in Ibanez products because they give you tons of features for the lowest price. Their GSR budget range is no exception. Amazing quality. I'd hated Ibanez in the past but their products proved me wrong. For it's price, it's an amazing starter bass, even an intermediate one if you'd upgrade the pickups, throw in a new bridge maybe add a preamp to it.
If they could add an alder body to it i'd be happy. I'd prefer alder tonal projection compared to agathis, but hey, it's a budget bass ... wadaya expect? Good stuff to get though!

This bass was built in Indonesia and was sold new in 2002. It is a long scale, 4-string Fender Jazz Bass-styled instrument with both P-bass and Jazz bass passive pickups. This is Ibanez's basic two pickup bass. Agathis body while the thin bolt-on neck appears to be two piece Maple. A "No frills for cheap thrills" kind of bass.
Sound
:
9
When I got it the buzz and hum from the electronics was totally unacceptable for recording purposes. Being the E.T. that I am (no Virginia, that's not "extra terrestial") I simply pulled everything and rewired it, shielding everything in sight. Now it is as quiet as a ninja in the night.
My music is a combination of genres, these days called "World Fusion". I love that P-bass sound for what I do. My first electric bass was a P-bass (back in the day when folks would razz you because you didn't have the more expensive Jazz bass). This bass, now with Fender Nylon wrapped, sounds just right, records well and, with the right setup, can even be bowed.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

I had to re-adjust a lot, but that is mainly because of the unusual way I approach the electric bass. Also, as mentioned, I did have to re-wire everything in order to use it for professional purposes.

This one may let you down in a bar fight due to the thin neck. Maybe you can use your neck adjustment wrench as a backup. However, other than for that purpose, it will probably withstand considerable abuse before it quits.

My favorite feature is the P-bass pickup. For me this bass needs nothing but what was mentioned above. That done, I would put it up against any bass I've ever played that cost less than $1K.

I've got a 2003 model with all stock parts except the strings. 22 frets, rosewood fretboard, maple neck, agathis body, P/J passive pickups, P Vol./J Vol./Tone, standard bridge, soundgear style body, standard tuners, 34" scale with a thin neck. The only thing with less features than this is a Fender Mark Hoppus Bass, pretty standard fare. For being the standard though it works really well, Indonesian made which, in my experience, makes it better than a mexican made bass.
Sound
:
7
I run mine with a Peavey TNT115 that has a 7 band EQ, with the amp I can turn it into just about any sound I want. I can get it sounding deep and throaty to high-pitched and whiny and everything in-between but that's mostly the amp. As for the bass itself, the tone control kinda sucks and the J-pickup has enormous amounts of hum, but that's probably just a defect in mine. The P/J combination is great because you can get most sounds you want so that's a plus. I play pretty much everything but mostly I do slap and it can sound great but again, that's the amp talkin'.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
8
The second I got mine I started playing it (after tuning naturally) and it worked pretty well. Everything is put together quite well, Ibanez didn't short me on that aspect, however the action was quite high. I've since gotten the action lowered and now it plays beautifully. The finish holds up decently, since this bass is my first I've beaten the hell out of it (something I regret now that I know a bit more about the musical world) and its only got minor scratches.
Reliability/Durability
:

This thing was made with the fact it's cheap in mind. I've given it hell, drops, banging it around, studded belts, you name it, this thing has probably lived through it without getting hurt at all. Like I said earlier, the finish has got it goin' on. Since I intend to keep the bass as a backup I'm going to replace the tuners (they aren't the worst but are definately far from the best) and I'm going to get locking strap locks but for now they'll do (I use a locking strap that doesn't need the strap locks). I've only gotten the truss rod adjusted once and it didn't need much of an adjustment. I'm thinking of replacing the bridge too...the stock one is pretty much equivalent to a chunk of aluminum. Biggest problem I had was the input jack crapped out on me in the first 2 months, a wiring problem, and I'm finally getting around to getting the J-pickup hum fixed...another wiring problem. Electronically not that sound.

For a beginning bass this is an awesome one to get. I've been playing for a year and a half now and it's gotten me pretty far so I can't complain too much, but after going out and searching the bass world for something I can save up and keep for a long time, this starter bass just doesn't do it for me anymore. I'm going to keep it as a backup, and I would trust it to work without cringing to the idea of having to grab it. I've played Music Man, Ernie Ball MM, Fender, Ibanez, Peavey, G&L, Tribute, and Yamaha in all price ranges, and this bass kicks the shit out of most basses in the same price range, it also holds it own as you climb up too. If it was stolen I would probably just save up and buy a better bass (which I'm in the process of doing anyway) but the person that steals it would be pretty stupid...I've decorated mine with stickers so it's unique and I would know my bass when I see it.

I play alot of punk/alt/ska/rock/metal and this bass can do it all. It also works for jazz too. I'm not much of a slapper but it sounds okay. With new strings, everything sounds fine, but I noticed that the E string is a little weaker than all the other strings and will give you a "cardboard" sound.

It's very comfortable and all in all a very good bass. But, the E string sounds like cardboard through every amp I've played it through. It took me a while to really notice this since I was a beginner, but once you hear alot of different bass tones, you realize that there is better out there.

You should already know the features of this bass, but here's a refresher. Two pickups, p/j config with seperate volume knobs and one tone knob. Gloss black color, you should know the rest. Gets a seven because I like to have a little more control over my sound. It would easily be a ten, but I've been spoiled by my SRX500.
Sound
:

Great sound for the price. The stock pickups aren't all that great, but I've been meaning to replace them for a while now. You can get everything from a chunky rock to a clean, pure harmonical jazz. Run it through the Phat-Hed distortion and you can get into the metal style of bass. It lacks a little on slap, but like I said above, i've been recently spoiled. It gets an eight, just because of the stock pickups.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

I bought mine at a pawn shop, and I knew the guy that owned it before me. He treated it like a red-headed step child. It wasn't uncommon for him to take it off and throw it around on stage, slam into the stage, and generally beat the living hell out of it. But it still works and looks just fine, with the only visible damage being one of the strap locks breaking loose, but that was an easy fix. The neck works, but like I said, i've been spoiled. It looks absolutely beautiful, I've added blood-red pinstrips on the front of the body, and a pinstrip rose in the same color on the back, and it looks just awesome.

Refer above to how it was treated before me. It takes a good deal to kill this bass. The only shaky things are the pups, but what can you expect? You could gig without a backup, but its just plain stupidity not to. No matter how durable the thing is, stuff happens that you don't expect.

Indonesia made, not sure of the model year but it has four controls and a 9V in the back, which sets it apart from most I've seen. Controls seem to be volume, pickup balance, tone, and a low-end booster. 4 strings, 34 scale, 22 frets, P/J pickups, Agathis body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard. Black finish, no pickguard, precision/soundgear style body, standard bridge, very thin neck and very lightweight body.
Sound
:

I play a lot of rock/alternative/jangly folk- A lot of rambling, complicated basslines where each note really has to deliver, and for the most part, it does. There's a bit of fret buzz with too low an action. The sound is full and rich when it's balanced to the P pickup, brighter and crisper when balanced to the J. Very versatile sound, three main sound 'areas' to play over that allow you to craft your sound without messing with knobs. The pickups are a bit weak on the D and G, and the factory strings sound crap - replace them as soon as you can. Overall a very consistant and good quality sound, especially for the price range.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Bass was perfectly set up right off the wall. Haven't had to adjust the truss or intonation since, and it holds a tune remarkably well. Everything seems to have been fit together perfectly - Ibanez seems to take a lot of time to do these things right, even on their lower-end models. The black finish is a little plain but has a nice overall look, pretty slick, and despite having no pickguard it's been amazingly resistant to dents, scratches, and damage in general.
Reliability/Durability
:
9
The one real flaw is that the agathis body, while very lightweight, is also very soft and has a tendency to strip at the upper strap peg. Needs a stripped-screw jacket from a hardware store to fix it. Otherwise, I've dropped it, smacked it around, and had it fall off of the strap without it coming out of tune or picking up any marks, much less taking real damage. Definitely a player for the live performer on a budget, or a good backup bass for a higher-end player. The hardware hasn't come loose after a lot of use and the finish seems there to stay. I don't like ever being without a backup(this usually -is- my backup) but if I had to, I'd use this one alone - it's never failed me.

Been playing for about a year now, and this was my first bass. I've since moved to a Fender American Precision as my primary bass but I don't think I'll ever get rid of this one - it's the absolute best thing out there for the price, and is the only 'cheap' bass I'd trust to be a backup. So yes, I'd replace it if it were lost. The only real complaint I've had is the loose/stripped strap pegs.

no idea when it was made, but i think it's indonesian. they make hella good guitars there, i must say. 22 frets, 4 strings. so far as i can tell, it has separate volume knobs for its P and J pickups, and a tone knob that affects both. they're standard ibanez pickups, which means passive. i don't know enough about bridges on basses to say what this thing has, but it looks a lot like every other bass bridge i've seen. nice black finish on that cool looking soundgear-style body, matching and equally cool looking headstock. the tuning pegs are nifty too, not like those funky fender ones. it came with... uh... the 4th string that they put on it for me. as you can probably tell, i got it used. strikes me as a rather basic bass, but it's got all i wanted and nothing i didn't.

i play bass when i want to try something different from my guitars, but mostly, i stick to a slow, kind of upbeat style. think of 311 and you'll be pretty close. anyway, i really like the sound of this thing. it can do most anything... i've gotten it to go from a metal bass (a tone kind of like cotton candy... shapeless, fuzzy, and good) to a ska bass with a sound that's tighter than a B-cup on pamela anderson and punchier than tyson on fight night. anyway, crappy analogies aside, this thing is nice for whatever it is you want to play. i've never tried it on an actual stage (i'm running it through a guitar amp for the time being, and i don't want the poor thing to blow up on me) but i'd imagine it sounds as good there as it does in the music store through a nice, big hartke amp...
basically, i like the sound. i don't like the difficulty of learning slap bass, but hey, i'm a guitarist. it's not supposed to be an easy transition.

well, this was a used bass, so i have no clue how the last person treated it. it's got a couple little chips on one of the cutaways, but hey, sh!t happens, as they say. looks nice all the same, though...
the only thing that i noticed was, well... aside from the fact that it was missing the top string when i first saw it, i kind of accidentally pulled one of the knobs off in the store... nothing a good push couldn't fix, and it hasn't bothered me since, but... eh...
in any case, it's nice for its usual price, and amazing for the one i paid... gets an 8 because i'm not sure if that knob thing was the fault of the previous owner or not...

i'd say this thing could probably take anything i throw at it... or throw it at... i've heard good things about ibanez, and while i haven't really tested it out yet (still waiting on that bass amp first), it looks like something i could use live. and probably will. and, seeing as no other bass in its range could possibly compare, i'll be using it without a backup.

34 scale, 22 frets, walnut fingerboard, medium frets, maple neck, 4 string, 2004 model I got, so it has a tone, 2 volume, independent for each pickup, a P and J style. And a Phat EQ booster. So it does have active eletronics with a 9 volt battery. Red finish, inproved bridge, with 6 thick bolts instead of 4 from older models.

Sick ass sound for a 230 dollar bass. Only problem is the J pickup, it buzzes like a bitch, the P pickup almost never. Great as a punk/funk/slap bass. Blink sound kinda, very ringy like a fender. I have ddario strings, came with it when I bought it. I prefer Rotosound strings for any bass i play, if its fretless maybe Darco ones.

My GSR was made in 2001 i beleive in Indonesia. It has 22 frets. I mostly use D'addario Strings. A couple monthes ago i sanded the finish off because the black finish was getting way too scratched up. When i bought it, it had a Precision Bass Pickup and a Jazz Bass Pickup, but after about a year the P-bass pickup literally died, it had almost no output anymore, so i removed it. I now use only the J bass pickup. Its a fairly noisy bass after a while, and it gets worse when you have the EQ on your amp dialed up. Its passive. My bass is made of agathis. The bridge is a cheap B-10, and it buzzes alot on the G string and the D string. I'm going to eventually get a badass bridge on it. The neck is the greatest part. It feels so freaking awesome. Its a skinnier neck and dosen't have a gigantic headstock. Its made of maple and has a rosewood fretboard.

I play stuff like the beatles, NOFX, Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, Anti-flag, Get Up Kids and more, and this bass does it all, though it dosent sound very good when i dont play it through my digitech BP200. Its a very noisy bass and ive had to resolder most of the connections. Flourescent lights make it go nuts. It makes wide variety of sounds when you turn the tone all the way up or all the way down.

I don't really remember how well it was set up when i bought it. Ive tweaked it a lot though, and now it feels very nice. The Frets were very well dressed, but the bridge saddles don't seem to fit the higher strings, ie G and D strings.

This bass is a beast. You could set a bomb off on it and nothing would happen. It stays in tune. The body feels great. The strap buttons could use some work. the button on the cut away i replaced with a bigger screw and a bunch of washers and it hasent given me any trouble since.

Its a great bass. I wouldnt trade it for the world, atleast once i change the pickup and the bridge. Its a real work horse. It dosent mess up the strings after heavy playing. I'm not even planning on getting a new bass and i've been playing this hog for 2 years now. I would reccomend getting a Digitech BP200 though. The BP200 makes it sound whatever you want. Its a great peddle. This bass is so much better than a squier, cheap washburn, or a cheap yamaha. Ibanez is definately the best beginner bass manufacturer.

I bought the Jewel Blue version because it was all the shop had left (but I really like the color anyway).

The sound is great. I play it through a 20w Orange amp. My dad's 30 year old Precision doesn't sound quite as good through this small amp. He says it sounds a little "muddy" compared to mine (though it is in a different class through a bigger amp).

The shop where we bought it had already set it up, and all we had to do was adjust the tuning when we got it home. There is a tiny bit of fret buzz, but the strings are new and the guitar needs a little playing-in...so no biggie.

My dad was a professional bass player for many years, and he helped me choose this as my first bass. He was very impressed with it, and as he doesn't play much these days he is even thinking of selling his old Precision (which is worth a lot of money) and buying one of these just to have a bass lying around home for him to teach me with (he is left-handed, so I can't have his Precision!!).
For the money, there's nothing I can think of complaining about. If it was stolen I would definitely consider buying another one.

This is my first bass. I bought it a year ago when I was first learning and I liked how it sounded - it sounded like a bass to my untrained ear. Now a year has passed and I've since started practicing w/ bands and I can hear how it sounds with different music. One band teases me and calls this my "metal bass". It definitely has a bright sound to it and doesn't go so well with the deep, moody sound of one of my bands (think Jesus & Mary Chain, Interpol) but my other band that's very rock oriented with fast songs and less meandering bass lines it sounds fine with (think Pixies). Plus I heard someone play the same basslines I was on a Fender and it was just obvious the different in sound. But for a practice bass it was great and it's really good for learning on. But specificially on sound this is certainly made for a bright sound (atl/hard rock, metal, punk). When I was learning I just played it through my 15w practice amp. Now I plug it in to a 65 watt amp the only thing that really bugs me is how "buzzy" it is when I don't play. Could be the amp though. I just turn down my volume nob on the bass when I'm not playing.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Action is great for me, especially for someone new to playing. I never got blisters, although working on slides made my fingers sore but that's just a function of that technique. Can't speak to the pickups. My friend who's been playing bass for 20 years was impressed with it when I brought it over to him. He said it was set up well and easy to play. Nice straight, thin neck (makes it easy for moving your fingers around if you're learning or have small hands).
Plus it's really light weight - I played a Fender for the first time recently and my shoulder wanted to fall off from the extra weight. So that's another bonus on the Ibanez. Super lightweight body but that's probably also why it sounds so bright.
Reliability/Durability
:

It stays in tune really well, even after 3 hours of banging on the A string, it's usually only slightly sharp by the time I'm done. I believe it'll withstand live playing and will last, but I'm also really good to my stuff in general so I'm not very distructive or good at putting things to hard tests. The only thing I'm ever nervous about are the straps popping off, but they haven't in the last year and I believe you can buy strap locks for that.

I bought this a year ago, played for 5 months then stopped and started again and have been playing for about another 3 months. If this were stolen at the point that I bought it when I was a true beginner, then yes, I would buy this again. Now that I know what sound I want and know that I'm serious about playing, I want something with a deeper sound and I'm willing to invest the $$ to buy it. But when you're just learning I think it's wise to get something reasonabley priced and I agree with everyone who has said this is a bass that would be just fine for playing live with too. It's solid, it looks great, is easy to play, and if the sound suits your style, then you're good to go. You get what you pay for - the things I wish it had are all things that are on the models that are above this one.

It has two volume knobs. They make it either very lound or very quiet, depending on which way i turn them. It is nice when something happens that you need to hear when playing to turn down your volume without going all the way over to the amp. It also has...get this!...a tuning peg for EACH of the four strings. It has a custom paint job: the name of my band THE CARDS spray painted on the back. It was hand made by Mr. Ibanez himself...or a guy in a sweatshop getting paid less than living wage, i forget...fuckers

I run it through a Boss Overdrive into a Fender Delux. It can vibrate sometimes with the steel strings, but when the pedal is on there is no notice of it. I play mostly Alt. Rock, and punk styles, and it seems to suit both of them fine. I run it through a Rogue RB-150 Bass Combo, which isn't the best but it sounds fine through it. It has a kind of warm bright sound to it, but you can get quite a few diffrent sounds coming out of it.

I took this thing out of the box and it was set up almost perfect, I only had to adjust the bridge a little. The action was set up perfect, just how I like it. The pickups seem to be adjusted alright, I havn't bothered them. They're plenty loud when I need them to be, and quiet when they need to be. They don't hum to bad, and none of the frets buzz.
This is a pretty sturdy bass, and can take quite a beating. This was my first bass, so at first I wasn't very careful with it, and for as many times as it has been banged around it doesn't have to many dings on it.

My GSR-200 has the same features as all the other reviews here. I imagine it's a 2003 model as I only purchased it a few days ago, and this one was made in Indonesia. My bass is the really nice, 'Jewel Blue' which looks really cool. The body is made of 'agathis' which I looked up in the dictionary, and it is a type of softwood (a little like pine) so the body *is* wooden beneath that substantial resin outer coat.
My bass came with a couple of allen keys to make adjustments to the bridge, and a standard mono jack-jack cable, but no gig bag or instructions. I also bought a proper stand at the same time, as I know these things have a habit of falling over and getting spoilt (or ruining whatever got the clouting!)
Sound
:

I am native to keyboards and play lots of funky bass lines, among others (I guess the best example is a bit like Jamiroquai's bass player) so I was really pleased when I learnt to continue playing in this type of style on the GSR - and it sounds really good - nice deep, rich, warm tone. Many have complained about the stock strings and that they are too twangy but I quite like this. If you pluck hard enough down at the bridge you can hear harmonics similar to a piano which I found rather interesting! I also rather like the red cotton wound around the ends of the strings.
I noticed many people complained about this guitar being noisy - the only time I found the noise to be intolerable was when I tried to play it through my Boss PW-2 distortion pedal (and it sounded awful - the PW-2 works better on my keyboards) but playing the bass either through my 100watt Peavey KB-100, or plugged directly into my hi-fi it sounds really clean and transparent whatever settings are used.
Which brings me to the control knobs. The sound doesn't really change all that much and I noticed that what change is there, does not take place linearly across the travel of the knob - more of a sudden change between on and off when you get to the midpoint. Luckily, I really like the sound of this bass wherever the knobs happen to be. In my own opinion, these knobs aren't really necessary but they look good.
I am a complete newbie to guitars and I bought mine for use in the studio to be used as a recording instrument - mainly so I will be able to say eventually that I can play more than just keyboards. For studio use it's a lovely bass but I cannot pass a view on how it would perform on stage. It seems nicely built and I can't see why there should be any problems.
I think I love everything about the sound of this bass.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

As said previously, being a complete newcomer to the guitar I know pretty much nothing about them, but it was perfectly in tune and I could play it much easier than when I tried practicing bass lines on an old acoustic. In terms of set-up it seems to be perfect for my way of playing.
There were no flaws in the finish or the hardware besides a tiny little dent in the neck which is really small and not too much to worry about. I did notice however that the spaces that have been milled out of the body to install the pickups are a little rough at the edges, but this is probably just down to the way it's made at the factory. Being the dark blue, this is not immediately noticeable.
I particularly like the shape of the body compared to many guitars. The back has a recess and it is very curvatious so it does not cut into you while you are playing like some squarer ones do. I play sitting down so this is more noticeable. I also bought this bass because of the thin neck. I must have the smallest pair of hands in the universe but with this guitar there's no problem there!
Reliability/Durability

I have always treated my musical instruments as though they were made of glass or paper, however well made they are. Even my old Yamaha DX7 synthesizer which everyone agrees is built like a rock is treated this way. I don't see why this bass couldn't be used live - to get a good sound from it you don't have to bash the hell out of it. Guitars are a bit like women, specially this one - curvy body and long neck - treat her with respect and I'm sure she will always be there for you.
The finish appears to be several millimetres deep and looks pretty substantial although because of the high gloss it does scratch quite easily. Tip of the day: if you wear a bracelet or watch take it off before playing. If you play standing up, pull your shirt down over your belt buckle to stop the back getting spoilt. The maple neck appears to have a much thinner coat of varnish and looks like it may get dirty easily so I always make a point of washing my hands before playing.
I've not used the GSR with a strap yet but the buttons seem solid enough at the moment, and as it's new, the truss rod has not had to be touched - I haven't even had to tune it yet.
Well, I bought this guitar for recording but if I was at a gig I would more than likely have a synth on the stage as well because synths will always be my chief instrument. If the worst did happen I could always play the bass on the synth instead.

As to the question of how long I have been playing guitar - that's just over two months, and I practiced playing bass lines on an old acoustic before getting the bass - so this was like heaven! So much easier to play and no more blisters. As to how long I have been a musician, the answer to that is nearly 16 years as I started playing organ in 1988 and have since acquired a large collection of synthesizers - Yamaha DX7, Korg 01/wFD, Oberheim MC1000, and the microKORG among others.
I've only had this bass for three days but as soon as I plugged it in and played that big, phat bottom E string I knew I was in love. I am still getting to know the guitar obviously, but if it decided to go A.W.O.L. I would, more than likely get this one again.
What do I love? That sexy, seductive curvy body, long, slender neck and that metallic dark blue finish is too good to be true. This bass also has a lovely rich, deep, smooth bottom end and sounds as good as it looks.
I can't find anything to hate about this bass.
My favourite feature has to be the narrower neck because it's perfect for my small, thin hands. The low action of the strings also means you don't get blisters from playing for more than five minutes. On my old acoustic I would have to stop after 20 minutes practice. With this bass I can jam for an entire afternoon before I start to feel my fingers need a break and even then, no blisters result.
I compared this bass mainly to the Yamaha RBX170 which was slightly cheaper and also labelled as a model ideal for a beginner, but for me it just didn't have the looks of the Ibanez. I also looked at the Squier P-Bass but there was consistent agreement across the board that this one should be avoided. Many people also said that the GSR is a good guitar for recording, studio musicians, which is the way I will be using it.
I used the reviews posted here (thanks to all who have posted!), and at a few other sites, to give me an idea of whether I was making the right choice or not. So many people have said that this is a great bass for a newbie and I could not agree more. Similar comments were also made about the Yamaha, but I much preferred the shape and look of this one. Based on a review from someone completely new to guitars but having a good idea of what is a good or bad sound, I think this bass diserves a nine out of ten. Well done Ibanez!

I Have no clue when this was made i bought it with a peavey microbass. ITs a pretty standard setup split p p/u and a j p/u. The great thing about this bass is that you can get anything you want out of this anything from growling death metal to kikass funk. THe fact that the nobs are shiny is gd and bad. Good beacuase it looks kl bad beacuase you cant tell the setting. I got mine in black looks real nice, the jewel blue looks kl aswell. theres no master volume, theres a volume for each pickup and an eq nob.

This thing for the price sound amazing better than the squires, yes its a bit more money but it will probs save you money in the end 'cos u'll want a new bass if u have a squire pretty quickly this will last you for ages. I play it mainly through the 20w peavey microbass and for band practices through a 130watt peavey, this sounds gd through anything. SOOOOOO much variety in sound. I've used this onstage, it sounded amazing. Havent tried it withh effects yet want to get an ibanez pd-7.

THere is nothing wrong with this bass except for the fact on MINE and probably mine only the jack lead input came loose, apparently this was actually my fault and had to pay #5 to get it repaired. The jazz pickup buzzes a bit , not noticeable when playing though.

I dont think i'd need a buckup unless i smashed this thing on my drummers head in anger, the finnish seems good quality, strap buttons seem solid enough. The factory strings arent great but they can be changed but i like 'em cos they are a bit tinny you can always change them if you want.

I'll give the sound about an 8, because it can make really low end, bassy sound which i really like, because my band play a grungy, alternative sound, but we also like to play punk rock. Unfortunately, this bass cannot play at its best form without the bass cranked up, because the sound starts to clack and resonate through the strings which sounds awful. I use a Crate BX-50 with a Digitech BP50
multi-effects processor

The action on this..well my bass is perfect.
I played on a Squier Standard J-Bass and the action on mine is better.
The pickups are ok, they have just began to move about a bit, but its nothing that a screwdriver couldnt fix. the tuning pegs are very tight and don't move very often unless you want them to.
The only problem is that the finish holds memories, if you touch the body, you're going to know about it for a while, fingerprints show up badly on this guitar.

I really do like this bass, i had a Tanglewood rebel 4k before this guitar and this one rips it apart! If you are a bassist whos been playing for over a year and wants something a bit more than a beginners bass then i would definately recommend this guitar to anyone. In the event of this guitar getting stolen i would be really upset and disappointed about it. But to be perfectly honest i would buy a better bass than this, but for the moment i love it all the same!

Made in Indonesia, I'd guess around 2001. Comes with 22 frets on a maple neck. Agathis (Basically Glorified Plastic) Body. A Volume for each of the 2 pickups, and one tone. Has A Precison with a Jazz Pickup added at the bridge. Passive Electronics, with a solid finish. The Body is a comfortable shape, nothing fancy here though. Much thinner body than a J or P Bass. Sealed Tuners, they work just fine for what I need. Medium Frets. No Included accesories.
Okay, so the Features won't amaze you, but I've been pretty happy with the bass. It's fairly straight forward, and for a beggining bass, it offers plenty of pickup versitility. The Bridge is also fully adjustable, And once adjusted, no fret buzz. Although I will ay that I like relativley high action.
Sound
:

I've been blasting it through a Dean Markley Head & Home Made Cab, and playing it through a Fender Bassman. Through the Dean Markley, (Which is a kinda, well 'okay' amp) The sound can get slightly thin. The Jazz Pickup is also slightly messed up, and produces some wierd buzz noises and feedback. (But this bass was also involved in a flood at my house, so, that could have something to with it) Ouch. Through my Bassman, and amp that no bass player is worthy of ownership (It sounds nice), the bass sounds pretty damn good. Nobody except a bassist will be able to tell the difference between it and a Fender P or J bass- at least as far as I've seen. As I said, the sound can thin out, but this can be defeated if you just set your amp right. I use it for Blues, Jazz, and Rock/Grunge. It works fine for any of them- although I would recomend a more expensive bass for jazz, because you're a bit more exposed.

Well, I got it from Guitar Center, so It was pretty nicely set up when I bought it right off the display. The action was fine, and the only complaints go to how unforgiving the finish is. Jeebus! Fingerprints were everywhere. (Again, I got it right off the display rack), but still. Before a show, I try and wipe it off again, but when you get under the lights, all you can see are fingerprints. Otherwise, very nice finish for a bass at this price range, and it certainly beats a Squier.

I don't know why the other guys are complaining about its durability, because mine's held up fine. Their are no cracks to speak of, the finish is fine, the strap buttons lossen every once in a while, but if you have a screwdriver than you can fix it, I think it works just fine. Personally, I would have no need for a backup. The intonation is what you'd expect for a 200 dollar guitar, decent

Okay now People, If you want a decent bass, for a cheapskate price, I would advise against any P or J basses made by Squier. Yes, they have real wood bodies, but personally, i dislke most everything else I've seen about them. This Ibanez Bass is a good value. If lost or stolen, I'd not replace it , simply because I've grown out of it. The Bass is meant to give you I wide spectrum of tones for the beggining bassist- if you have the money, you might as well get a higher end bass suited to you're type of music. If I could have one wish, it would be that not so many people own this bass. Because it has been labeled as a begginer bass (Because well, lets face it, it sort of is), People don't take me seriously when I play it, because it's sitting in the closet of so many little kids who bought because they told their mom they wanted to be a rock star. Grrr. It's a nice bass though. So buy it.... now......

heres the problem... after two days this bass tipped and slid into a wall from its stand. it didnt even fall over, but the impact was enough to cause a massive crack down the back of the body. Ugly!. However, it still plays good, and has lasted for 2 years with that crack so no worries!... the Tone Controls have come loose, and the strap buttons are wobbly, but you can fix that yourself no problem when it happens...
I wouldnt gig this without a backup though, just something about it that i dont trust...

Hah. I left it out 5 minutes in a room, and it went out of tune. I need the neck constantly adjusted, it's gone in for many tune ups. I've been playing guitar for close to two years. I picked up the bass because my buddy needed a bassest for a new band he was forming.
If stolen I'd seriously hurt the dude if he was caught, but I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
Favorite feature is that it is forgiving for the beginner. If you manage to wreak it, it is cheap enough to get a new one and to bring it up a stage with new pickups is a cheap upgrade.
The pervious reviews definitly helped me choose to buy this axe. If you want to get into bass, and have the chance to go to a music store and sit for an hour with a few basses, put the GSR 200 on the try list.

Stock Indonesian (see other reviews).
This is fundamentally a beginner - intermediate guitar, unless of course you're an accomplished musician. With that in mind.
The neck is thin and fast and makes for good transition from a 6 string. Even so, would probably not be good for those with small hands due to the broad spacing of the lower frets.
Sound
:

You can get a good range of bare bones sounds to cover most styles of music acceptably with just the guitar. The guitar pops well but haven't had much success with slap. Tapping not so good and harmonics marginal (poor string set). Good with picks. Decent standup sound from palming the bridge. The stock pickups are noticeably lacking but nothing a respectable amplifier won't compensate for. The volume pots are scratchy but this bass has never been covered either. Probably the most admirable aspect of this guitar is that it never goes out of tune (unless the keys get bumped) and it has sat idle for extended periods (months!).

Craftsmanship in cheap guitars is inherently inconsistent. If at all possible, take an experienced bass player with you to minimize the chances of overlooking something you'll regret later. If you're buying new from one of the chains, make sure they include a free setup to your satisfaction before you hand over any money. And if they don't come down on price or throw in a free goodie or two, go somewhere that will. A gig bag in particular will protect the guitar in transport and keep the guitar clean (cleaning those tight spots is such a pain) as well as the pots if tucked away when not playing.
That much said. On this particular instrument, after shimming the neck, trust rod and bridge adjustment, I have not been able to get the string set to even a moderately acceptable level without buzz. In spite of that, it is quite playable. To my knowledge, the pickups are not adjustable without shimming underneath them and getting longer screws (a definite negative - have to remove strings). The pickup magnets do set well in relation to the strings. I have not been able to find a really comfortable right hand position on this body. Appearance wise, the instrument still looks great and the composite fingerboard feels better than Rosewood (and maybe ebony?)
Reliability/Durability
:

Cheaper hardware and components are obviously inherent in cheaper guitars. Even so, these tuning keys are unbeatable. I did have to resolder the P pickup wire twice (from the winding itself to the pickup frame). The neck and body is stout. I had read cautions about putting Thomastik-Infeld flats on the necks of some guitars and was particularly concerned because of this thin neck. I had no luck tracking down the answer so I slapped a set of them puppies on and - no problem.

No contact with Ibanez. The best chance of support will be where you buy. In general, smaller, independent stores may have less of a selection or cost more, but they're more likely to be responsive if there's a problem after the sale.
As a rule, I think Ibanez is one of the better guitar makers for the money but I'm putting a "1" here because guitar manufacturers in general don't back their products and a "10" would go into the review if I left no opionion. And besides, if you have a problem, the manufacturers "are" basically worthless, which is what a 1 is.

Years ago I had a used music store selling mostly guitars, amps, and drums. Hundreds of various brand guitars from cheapo's to vintage. No two guitars are alike. There are some great cheap guitars out there and some expensive junk. Ibanez was an above average manufacturer of guitars back then, I guess still is.
The GSR 200 is a good guitar of choice, just try and pick one out that is suitable enough for recording and live performance cause you never know where you'll end up. It's nice to have bought a keeper you can gig with without having to worry about someone stealing it or picking it up and playing it half drunk.

The sound is "OK", but I am getting ready to change all of the electronics. Compared to other basses I've now heard, I would say my sound is just "OK", but has been perfectly workable so far in the Rockin Oldies band I am in. It has a buzz when the P pickup volume is all the way up. The tone control does give noticeable variety in the sound.

I really like the thin neck. I am a fairly new player and have only handled one or two other basses, but I really like this neck. I'd like the frets to be closer, as I have small hands and it is a stretch compared to my friend's Fender Precision. But I like the action. I am learning to stretch my fingers more.

The electronics have been a problem since it was brand new. One of the "P" pickups has something wrong and it goes out, and I have to tap it to get the sound back. Also, neither of the volume control knobs don't work properly either. The tone control knob is the only one that works normally. I am getting ready to replace all of the electronics, and I think I am going to be really happy, cause I love the bass for everything else.

This is one of Ibanez's entry level basses, the hardware specs have been covered enough, but a couple of points that stand out are:
Neck - Thin & fast as is customary on Ibanez basses.
Tuning machines - Gotah copies that work very well, once the
strings are broken in, it stays in tune
Bridge - Cheap stamped ugly bridge, once in a while it will rattle.
Pickups - 1 P & 1 J, although neither speaks with a particularly
distinct voice, the J is suitabe for thumbstyle.
Sound
:
6
I play through a peavey 15" combo cab and use a Digitech BP 200 strung through the effect loop (If you have an effects loop, use it, it gets rid of a ton of noise). The bass did pick up noise through the J pickup but this has been substantialy reduced with shielding paint. It seems the bass is rather limited in its range of sound, but if you are looking for bright tones and reasonable slap tones at an entry level price...
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

As with any bass you get from any manufacturer, the setup is a product of the guy who gets paid dirt to set up a hundred basses a day. needless to say I had to adjust it to my prefrences and you probably will too. Fit and finish are top notch considering the price.

Anyway, since I didnt know jack when I bought it, I'd say I lucked out and got a decent bass for the price. If it were lost or stolen I would have to see how much I missed the 4 string befor I knew if I would get another 4, but if I did, it would not be this model.

I find this bass to very well worth what it costs.I bought my bass new so I would assume it is a 2001 or 2002. It is a lowwer cost 4 string bass made in indonesia with an agathis body (not exactly the body material of top end basses) but this bass does take a good beating.
ot also has 22 frets, passive Ibanez p & j pickups with a sperate volume for each pickup and a tone control, the neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard, I find the neck very easy to play have a problem with the action. I am very satisfied with the jewel blue finish but the finger print show like crazy (especially after my youngest daughter touches it). My bass came with nothing, just a box.
I think the good folks at Ibanez can afford to throw in a gig bag, but for the price I'd say these features are pretty good

I play bass in a church praise band and I find this bass to definitely fit my needs. At church I play the bass through an Ibanez- soundwave 35 amp (good amp) which is then fed into the church sound sytem, I dont really have any problems with my sound there.
At home is a different story. I find at home that it doesnt have the most power for rock, but I cant say this is the basses problem, because at home I play through a rockman bassace headphone amp but I find through the soundwave that it sounds good

I find the action easy to deal with but there is some buzz on the E around the 5th fret
and the tuners are far from great but I make it through 2 church services without retuning

I havent been playing bass for long, I used to play guitar and then I traded in an Ibanez artstar for this bass. I wouldnt say that is the best bass ever built (it was only 200 bucks) but for its price and class I'd say it is a very good bass. I like Ibanez overall and some day as I get better and my wife allows, I will step up maybe to a higher end soundgear and then maybe to a signature model.I like most, compared this bass to the Squires in the same price range and I found this bass to be much better

My GSR200 was made in Indonesia. It has a nice Jewel blue finish, which looks amazing until you get fingerprints over it. Its a full scale bass, so there's no problem with sustain. Its got two pickups, Ibanez's Powersound Prescision style (in the middle) and Jazz bass type near the bridge and they both have visible pole pieces. The three controls are individual volume for each pickup and a master tone. Passive electronics to keep things simple as this is a bass suited for beginners or people who just want to play. I'm not sure what the body is made from but the neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard. The body is like a slimmer and more metally looking p-bass. The bridge is just like what youd find on a Fender bass but it isnt string thru body. The tuners are Gotoh's i think, which easily go out of tune in the soft case that came with the bass. It also came with a cable.

This bass will go well with whatever style you play. It gives you both Prescision and Jazz bass sounds so it would be better to buy this bass if you're a fan of both (and if like me you find Fender basses too bulky). It sounds great when you plug it into a decent amp, a nice clear sound, even better when you've just put a new set of strings on.
I dont have a bass amp at home, so i rely on its acoustic sound. It only sounds really nice when its got new strings.

I dont find it that easy to play this bass as the strings seemed too hard and tight, so i used a lighter set, but it didnt seem to help that much. If you want to play finger style it would be best getting softer feeling strings. one of the volume knobs came loose, but that was just a matter of tightening it.

Just bought it new, so I assume it is either a 2001 or 2001 model. Since it's not a car, I didn't investigate. All the features are as described in the other reviews. Same number of frets, P&J pickups etc.... All of my ratings will be based on the fact that I am a beginner, this is a beginner bass, and that I didn't know anything about basses before last week!

I was the guitar player in a praise band. Our bass player had to have surgery and will probably not return to the band. The music leader informed me on a Thursday afternoon that he wanted me to be ready to play bass on Sunday since they could find guitar players coming out the wazoo but no bass players. I purchased the Ibanez based on the comments in this review section, so don't think you're wasting your time submiting one. I spent a few days learning the basic note positions. A, G, C, D, F, Bb etc, and then gave it a go. I play through a high dollar church PA system with monstrous speakers (Like 6ft tall!). In my novice opinion, it sounded fuggin incredible. Deep full tones, and neverending sustain. I would have to say however that the controls don't seem to offer much variety in sound. Basically it seems like they put three knobs on the thing which ultimately don't control much more than volume. Since I don't care about sound variety and just have to lay down a bass foundation to keep all the other guys in the same measure, that suits me fine. A lot of people came up after the service and commented on how good the thing sounded so it must be ok. Probably falls short for some funky stuff in a rock or jazz band environment, but suuts me fine. I don't even know how to slap. If I end up being the permanent bass player, I may find more shortcomings, but for now, this thing kicks.

The finish was great. I went with black, which of course is a pain to keep looking good, but when it's all wiped down, it looks very nice. The setup was ok. Some bozo at Guitar Center spent a whole 5 minutes setting it up for me while I picked out a strap so there was some buzz and some intonation problems. I corrected this by using the Ibanez supplied instructions and all seems well now.

Well the first thing that happened to this bass when I got it home was that while I had it laying across a chair waiting for me to finish mounting a wall hanger, one of my under 5 kids came running through the room and knocked it down onto a hardwood floor. Arrrrrrgh! It seemed to do no damage however. No dents or scratches, and the thing was even still in tune! I'm sure if this had been a high dollar bass, there would have been all kinds of problems, but as is expected with an entry level instrument, they are built like rocks.

Haven't dealt with them yet. As I said, I've had the thing a total of 4 days now. It would have been nice if they had included some kind of model specific instructions. You pretty much have to figure out what the 3 control knobs do on your own, but since they don't seem to do much other than adjust the volume, it's not rocket science. Ibanez does have a nice website where you can register your instrument purchase online for warranty purposes and also download generic owners manuals.

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, but bass for just a couple of days. It did come through great in it's first live on stage performance. It seems to be a great value for the money, and just what a beginner needs to get their feet wet. I'm sure that if I continue to play bass, I'll eventually want one that is fancier and costlier and comes with active pickups, but for now, this bass is perfect in every way. If it were stolen, I'd tell the music leader that the first one was on me, but the second one is on him. LOL! Yeah, for now I'd buy another one for sure. It looks great, sounds good and the neck width is perfect for someone transitioning from guitar. Hopefully you won't have to transition in 2 days like I did however. Regards.

I've been playing this thing about a year now, so i've had a lot of experience with this particular rig.
I play a lot of Jazz/Blues/Rock music. The sound is full at times, flat at others. It's fairly inconsistent I've found. The low E is -very- loud in comparison to the other strings. And almost sounds tuned down with how much it buzzes. Even after a good pro tune, it buzzes a lot.
I run it through a Boss GEB-7 to a Boss CS-3 into an Ampeg BA-115 combo.
From tiem to time, i've tried doing some Slap bass, and this bass does NOT react well to it. It's an instant sound then mutes immediately. Sounds more like you made a mistake than a good slap.

This thing could be thrown down an elevator shaft and survive with only some scratches. The finish seems fairly sensitive to scratching, but the neck is straight the body's firm and doesn't feel "thrown together". I've slapped the hell out of this thing and have say it's pretty darn reliable.
The strap buttons WILL NOT STAY FRICKIN SCREWED IN!! i have a screwdriver in my dang gig bag to keep tightening them.
I would use it without a backup. It's very not bad.

I had a GSR200 when I first started out as a bass player. I still consider myself as a learner, but I've been playing for a bit under 3 years and I've been through3 basses already. The Ibanez was my second.
To describe it in a sentence I would say that the GSR200 is possibly the ultimate beginner's bass.
Although it has passive pickups, the thing can put out some sound!!! I had it pumping through my brothers 800w peavey the day I got it and it sounded great. Its got a great look and thats a bit beneficial to beginner players cos youd be surprised at the amount of 13-14 year olds who begin playing bass cos they see a really cool one in a store or on tv. The Ibanez is nicely styled which means you don't really get a whole lotta kids after replacement parts cos they stuffed the originals trying to make the bass look different or similar to one they've seen.

You do occasionally get a bit of buzz, but it's nothing worth buying a different bass over. Tonal variety is good and what you'd expect for a bass of it's price, and Ibanez have done very well with the pickups - solid and all that a beginner needs.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Ibanez succeed where companies like Squier don't - they guve all their models, no matter how cheap, the same setup. This means you're not going to find it roughly and cheaply made - when you look at it the only difference you can find between it and a genuine SR is maybe the headstock name and the electronics.
Reliability/Durability
:

This bass was obviously built for the beginner cos it's impossible to break. I dropped mine that many times and stil it was perfect - not a scratch on it. I'd still recommend a really good solid case but you can be sure that it won't fall apart or chip or scracth very easily.

I bought this bass brand new, for a very reasonable 170 English pounds. It's a Jewel Blue 2001 model from Indonesia with both P and J pickups. The neck is pretty thin, which surprisingly, I find very uncomfortable because of my large hands.
This was my first bass, so I wanted value for money, but not something utterly bollocks like a Hondo or Squire. The GSR has the feel of an expensive bass, but it has it's faults. The tonal and volume controls are useless, they honestly don't do much and this bass certainly doesn't need 3 controls. The body is very nice and it's comfortable for any playing styles but the pickups are poor. The P pickup is average, but the J one is way too loud and picks up every little unwanted detail.
Sound
:
5
The sound is, in a word, bland. It's not punchy or unique, I tend to play with a pick way down near the bridge, which helps me achieve a brighter tone, but it still doesn't compare to something like a Fender P-Bass.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

This is where the bass does well, it was set up immaculately, absolutely no complaints there at all. The pickups were set at a good height, the action was good and it stays in tune very well.
The Jewel Blue finish is really good, but it scratches easily, so beware!
Reliability/Durability
:

The paint on the body and headstock inevitably scratches, but on the GSR it scratches quite badly. The hardware (save the J pickup) is very good and I have only had to replace broken strings so far (and that's only because I beat the hell outta my bass.) The strap nut started coming lose a few months back, but I tightened it and now it shows no signs of slipping.
If you are playing live then you probably won't need a backup for this bass, however, I tend to play a lot of different styles. The GSR is versatile and you can play just about anything on it, but it only does an average job with most styles. It excells when playing Funk, Blues, Alt. Rock and metal though!

This is a great bass for any beginner and you can't beat it's value for money. It's easy to play and I have become very good on it, which means that soon I will be upgrading (sweeeeeeeeeeet...)
In retrospect, I probably wouldn't have bought this bass though. Since I have started playing, I have developed a flare for picking; this is something the GSR doesn't handle well and the paint is starting to wear thin underneath the strings. If you want to be a pick bassist, then I recommend the OLP MM-4 Stingray, it's a wicked official Musicman copy off and perfect for your picking needs!
I'd have to say that my favourite feature of this bass is the comfortable body shape, but it would be better if that J pickup wasn't there and if it was available with a Maple fretboard (Rosewood is the only option.)
If this bass was stolen, I wouldn't buy another, but I would still sing it's praises to anyone wishing to start out on bass.

I'm not a sound expert on bass, because I'm a guitarist who recently switched to bass. I play on a 65-watt Ibanez Sound Wave bass amp, and I've always thought it was nice and punchy.
have you ever tried playing a bass through one of those 9-volt battery Smokey amps? I have, and I love it. Whenever I'm just chillin in my room or where ever I happen to be, I have a little Smokey amp with a little cable in my bass gig bag. I just have it to be able to hear myself without being near my 55 lb. amp! it sounds awesome coming through 0.4-watts of power. well as awesome as you could expect it to.

as far as I know, this bass had no flaws other than how new the strings are. (I hate new strings, on any guitar). if you have a little bit of a fret-buzz, tune up each string a half-step...and leave them like that JUST for about 2 minutes, and then tune them back down. that should stretch the strings just a bit, and reduce fretting out (at least it did for me).

This is a 2000 model Ibanez GSR200, made in Indonesia. It is a four string with 24 frets, solid top. There are two pickups, a P-style pickup at the neck and a J-style pickup at the bridge. There is a volume control for each and one tone control for both (a total of three knobs: volume, volume, tone). They are passive pickups, I believe Ibanez calls these "Powersound pickups". The body is made of agathis, the neck of maple with a rosewood fretboard. Mine came in the Jewel Blue color with Gotoh-style tuners. A strap and cheapie cable were included. One nice thing about this bass is that it is light and has a small neck, as all Ibanezes do. People with smaller hands will really appreciate the Ibanez basses.
Sound
:

This bass works for most music styles. I used it for worship music as well as punk and rock. I use no effects. Because I like punchier tone, I mostly use the P-pickup on this bass. The J-pickup is too bright and has the added disadvantage of picking up 60-cycle hum when near other electronics. For the most part, there isn't much variety with the sound of this bass. The tone knob hardly affects the P-pickup, so I leave it at zero (it does provide a fuller range for the J-pickup). Since the body is so small and the pickups are cheap, the sound is brighter than I'd like it to be. There isn't much down-and-dirty oomph.

My Ibanez was set up perfectly. I also liked the strings it came with very much. If I knew what kind they were, I would probably buy them. The action was low and the bass looked beautiful right out of the box. There was nothing wrong with the finish at all. It gets the highest mark for this category. Even though the bass only cost $200, I have received numerous compliments for its looks and styling.

I've owned this bass for a year now and it has never let me down. The hardware is solid (above average for this price range) and you can trust the bass to deal with anything you put it through (aside from smashing it to bits). It also stays in tune really well. I've only adjusted the truss rod once. Also, I use it on gigs often without a backup and don't have to think twice.

I've been playing bass and guitar for four years now and this was my second bass. The other one was a generic P-Bass copy and my Ibanez was a breath of fresh air compared to that bass. One nice thing about my Ibanez was that the frets aren't longer than the fretboard and I can move my left hand up and down the neck without being scratched by a fret. Probably the biggest plus about the Ibanez is that it is lightweight and small. I only wish that I had bought the GSR100 which doesn't have the J-pickup, and saved a little cash, since I don't use that pickup anyway. One minus is that sometimes the pickups distort when I am playing a line with a fast attack. Usually I don't play many lines like that though so I rarely notice it.
If this bass was stolen or lost, I would consider buying another one, although now I want to move up to a Fender P-Bass for its punchier tone.

This is a pretty good begginer bass. Ithas pretty solid range with its 2 tone and one volume knob. For thi price this is what you expect. But the retail is abot 300$ so you can sell t of in a few years after aving upsome cash and get a good price in return. I didn't get any special accecories with is, but I bout it from Guitar center for well under 300$ and Ididnt't expect too much. The neck pretty much blows and the strings are the worst. It probablly cost about 35$ to mass produce. The pickups also suck. They give a very general Ibanez sound. I have seen better Ibanezes for about 100$ more. If you were considering buying it i would spend an extra 200 and get a used warwick fro a pawnshop. But it is hard to pass the quality of an Ibanez. THey have a good repuatation. You could play a good punk gig with it because it is reall bright.

THe pedal gives he low end crunch i needbecasue i play alot of hardcore and black metal.i he run it through a zoom BFX 708. THe sound gets los in the ditortion, but with the wahsis kinda works. THIS IS NOT A SLAP BASS. The slap sounds dies agter like a millisecond. You can get 2 tipical sounds outof this. A cheap P bass, and a cheap Jazz bass. It works well for jazz. personaly dont like the p pickups because i dont like to play punk.( which is mostly played on P basses. It is my practice bass when im boared. I am going to sell it in a few days. If anyone wants it they ca have it for 150$ email me at "fnkymnky500@aol.com" It is in mint condition and needs to go. exspecially for the price. I use a crate bfx50 amp with a zoom 506 bass pedal. hard to get deep notes without the pedal,a but most of that is due to the low quality factory strings. i wouls definitely recommend replacing them. very versatile sound that can be used for any style of music. not very good for slap style bass though. I like the j-pickup better, the p gets muddy when it's fully on. great for live performances, decently good sounding in the studio, but pay close attention to your eq. I wish it was richer.... perhaps with a change of strings it would sound different.....it's kinda twangy, great for slap, I've only used it with a crate 25 watt amp and it had nice lows and pretty even tone, it's good for metal, but I wish it had a more rich sound.....I was looking for the same tone as dirk lance from incubus but I didn't find it......maybe that's cuz he plays a warwick!

the action is FAST...it buzzes quite alot.......the fretwire is poorly filed......it pisses me off....it's not that bad but it's still uncomforatable when you slide your hand up the neck....it doesn't hack you open or anything

I don't know what to think about how durable it is......it's rather light, and thin.....but it doesn't seem to bad....the finish is fine....I would probably gig with it, and I can't afford a backup but I'd probably want one just in case

I wish it had better P pick ups, it's the best in it's price range...I shouldn't have gotten black...I wanted jewel blue...but they didn't have it in stock

I have been unable to get a decent sound of of this bass. It won't seem to do anything other than a lifeless twangy sound. I've tried all pickup volume settings to no avail. The j pickup is also very noisy. I have only used it for recording purposes so I can't judge the live sound which might be fine.
I thought it might be the strings so I have tried 3 different brands which seesm to have done little to improve the sound.
I've even played it through my mates Ampeg SVT and it sounded awful still so it is deinatly the bass

The bass is very well finished and the bridge and tuning pegs work great. The setup it came with was dire, it was really hard to play and the bow in the neck was crazy. I thought that it would be fine once I adjusted the truss rod and the action but it seems the only way to adjust the neck is to take it off completly and move a piece of sandpaper stuff backwards or forwards and then put the neck back on again! I know this is a cheap bass but that is stupid. It is almost impossible to play.

MAde in Indonisia (probably spelled wrong). It was made in 2001. Bought it new. IT has 24 frets, 4 strings. It had passive P/J pickups. Two volume one tone. Rosewood fretboard. Its an agathis body, "jewel blue." The neck is like jazz bass thin and bloody fast. Its not really a "featurific" bass.

For a low cost bass it has a pretty good sound. The j pickup is a little niosy but arnt they all? Through my amp and preamp or on any i can get strong lows and sharp highs. The sound can get muddy with both pickups on full. It works fine for many styles.

OMG this bass is lighter than most. Very easy to move around and play with live. Im not to sure about the hardware yet but seems liek it will last for at least a little bit. The strap buttons work fine, i actually had a hard time getting my strap off (but then agian i have a very stiff leather strap..) This is a good bass to have just incase somthing happens to your musicman or other bass of better quality. I wouldnt use this on a gig without a back up, but i wouldnt use anytning without a backup for that matter.

I really wish it had better pickups. As for the anything else i would like to share: Pink Floyd Rules!!! :-p

Bass was set up adequatly but I have very specific settings. The factory set this up well enough to get my attention. I was looking at A couple others that were twice the price but had piss poor feel and sound. This bass is truly an example of it's not how much you pay, it's how well you play. With slight adjustments to bridge I would put this model up against many/

The bass has survived many of performances and will in the long run. The hardware seems to be holding up with no problems and I am not easy on this thing either. Strap buttons have been replaces with strap locks and these are very solid, stock buttons were fine but I like to move around alot and have never trusted stock buttons. Anyone who would play with out a back up needs to really think about whatthey are doing, this has nothing to with the bass but more string quality. This bass is dependable enough but I liked this one so much, I went and bought another and this review is for that as well.

I have been playing bass since the age of 12, I am 31 now. I had given up playing when I started a family/bought a home but music is that itch you can never scratch. I keep things very basic with equipment. I use no effects and play strait through amps and belive that you can spend $1,000 on a piece of gear and it can sound like one that you bought at a yard sale. I can afford many on the upper echelon of the price scale, there is no need, so long as Ibanez keeps this in production. I may buy the 5 string version of this model and would certainly buy another if any thing should happen to the one(s) I use.

Made in Indonesia circa 2000. 22 low/wide frets. 2 independant volume and 1 joint tone knobs. Passive P&J pickups. Agathis body with maple neck and "sonoklien" fingerboard, whatever sonoklien is, looks like rosewood to me.
Sound

I'm still a beginning bassist and try to play all stlyes, but I do lean toward blues and some rock. I like the way the bass sounds overall. It could use some better pickups, the J sounds a little twangy for my tastes. I prefer to keep both close to eachother in volume to even out the response. The P has a great low tone but neither one does as good as I could hope on the higher notes. I get almost no hum from either pickup. I have used it with half a dozen different amps and haven't noticed a big difference in any of them.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
The action was a little low when I got it, and one of the frets needed to be smoothed. (I'll blame that one on united parcel screwups.) I did have to set the intonation, it was close, but still not right. The body is comfortable to sit and play. The back has a relief on top so I can hold it cloose without discomfort. I wish the lower relief was about an inch farther back. Fit is great, light, small neck, and it doesn't have that nasty old, makes it look like a fender, pick guard. Jewel blue, I get compliments from everone on how great the color is. Not a scratch in it. I have to wipe the fingerprints off after everytime I practice, or you can see that one smudge that doesn't shine from anywhere in the room. I need to drop my keys on it so I won't be so anal.

This is my first and only instrument. I looked around at every bass I could find before I ordered this one. It has the smallest neck I could find which is very important for my small hands and is on the light side for comfortable play and practice. I have a friend who is and epi and fender dealer, he was very impressed, while he was doing the final setup he was spouting comments on how much better it was set up out of the box compared to the fenders and squiers. The strings are a little on the light side, it came with a .095 E string. I'll be putting a .100 or .105 when it comes time to get new strings. I really like the low frets it allows for a lower action than some other styles out there. A little hotter pickup would be nice as would an 800# for customer service. A good value for the price I paid, but not the $300 Ibanez list price.

Non-locking medium speed but jumbo tuners. 22 fretts, jumbo. A good sized neck. When I first bought it, the action was good, but the strings cut into the nutt, causing uneven action. That I fixed rather easily. It has p and j style pickups, and a fiber glass body, 3 knobs, one for p, one for J, and one for tone. For its class, this guitar actually has a lot of features. Unlike maybe a mexican fender jazz where it only has one pickup, this one has two. Also, it has a catchy shape that you'll fall in love with.
Sound
:
6
Kind of blendy muffled sound on the p pickup, but can have a little of a twangy pickup on the J. I used a rat guitar pedal to see how it sounded distorted, and found that on weak amps like my practice amp, it screaches way to much. But on more powerful, like my ibanez amp, it has a really actually good, grungy sound you couldn't really find anywhere else for bass.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The only flaw was that the input jack came loose, and the wire from inside disconnected, forcing me to open my guitar and fix it, but that wasn't really a huge problem. Black finish with silver knobs and silver bridge. Not forget silver tuners.

I have only had this bass for about 6 months, and I already had to make to repair jobs. So with that in mind I wouldn't think it would be too reliable hardware unfortunantly. It does stay in tune okay on a normal bases however. And because of the fact that it does stay in tune, and that it is light and not uncomfortable, I wouldn't mind using it live. I wouldn't use it on tour however because of the fact that the hardware doesn't seem to last.

When you add up the facts, this isn't a horrible beginner guitar, it really isn't. But with a low reliabity in hardware, it is a risk otherwise. It can display a real metal sound through a rat. If my bass were stolen, since it was my first bass, I wouldn't buy it again. Instead I would save and by a more reliable, professional bass.

Made in Japan? 22 frets and 4 strings. apparently it has P & J style pickups, whatever they are. Passive control. It has an agathis body, even though it feels more like solid acrylic. Neck is pretty thin so it makes it easy to play and also faster to play. Included a gig bag and lead, but i got that at the shop when i bought it at a discount price.
Sound

I play from Jazz, Blues and rock/metal/grunge/punk, I have a Laney Hardcore amp which is not all that loud, but it does the job. I find that it has a dark deep sound, it sounds better than a lot of other basses i have played in that price range. I like the feel and weight of the bass, but i dislike the volume and tone knobs, it takes a while to get used to figuring them out. I have had it for over a year and have not changed the strings so now they sound dull and lifeless, but they lasted a long time.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
Action was too high so now I have lowered it so it is faster and easier to play. When it had the higher action there was a lot of fret buzz, but that is minimal now. As it is a black finish you can see every fingerprint and smudge apart from those problems everything else is fine and there are no problems
Reliability/Durability

Never played a gig with it but it seems like it will be useful at one, if I played a gig I would always take a backup just incase. The finish is good, I have hit it on the ceiling a few times when taking it off, but it seems to do more damage to the ceiling. Definatly depend on it, top quality for its price, I have played a Peavey bass in the same price range and that felt like a lump of wood compared to the Ibanez. The strap buttons have held up so far

Been playing over a year, no problems apart from needing to lower the action. The strings finally need changing. Makes a great sound and plays very well. After having it for over a year it has been played in well, can't really compare to the better quality basses but it seems to be undervalued because it is such a good bass, and it is definatly better than other basses of that price, better than the Squire P-Bass and the Peavey one I tried. I would get it again, but I am more likely to upgrade now. It has really help a lot since I started and I would highly recommend it to anyone

My GSR 200 was made earlier this year I think. It's got 22 huge on a 22" neck. It's got both P and J style pick ups which have one tone control each and they share one volume knob. They put out pretty good sound, although sometimes the strings rattle and screw it up. It's got what I'm pretty sure is a mahogany neck and body. Like I said before, It's got jumbo frets and a pretty wide neck. It came with a one year warrenty and an alan wrench. It didn't come with any instructions, but it's not all that hard to figure out.
Sound
:
9
It makes a nice sound, but when the strings rattle it's an entirely different story. Both pickups work well and neither clashes with the other. It makes a dark, warm, clean sound with minimal roaring, though a pedal or distortion equipment, it can do all the roaring anybody'd ever need. I've only had it for about two weeks so I haven't had it on stage yet, but it does well in studio. With a good amp (i've got a rogue that's pretty mediochre), it would sound awesome.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

It came in already set up, strings and all. The pickups were already mounted and the knobs were tightened. The only problem was grounding. It makes the amp buzz a little unless you've got a finger on one of the knobs.

Made in Indonesia (2000 I think, because the previous reviews indicate a MIK). 22 frets, 4-string. 'Sonokelin' fingerboard (looks like rosewood). Agathis body with 1-pc maple neck. Passive J- and P-style pickups in P-J configuration. Two tone knobs and a volume knobs. Standard bridge and strap buttons. The output jack is located on the side, which is nice.
Two of the features I noticed first about the GSR200 is the neck and the weight. The neck is very slim and short which made it an easy transition from guitar. The bass is also rather light which is a definite plus when playing with a strap. It seems smaller than the only other two basses I've ever played, an Epi and a Fender P-Bass. Overall, good features for the price.

This is my first bass and attempt at learning bass. I've been playing guitar for a couple years, but I haven't developed a ear for good bass tones. It's being used with a Danelectro Nifty Seventy 15W amp. The J-pickup is somewhat muddy, more darker and subdued. It does provide a nice contrast, however, to the P-pickup which has a punchy, funky tone for slap bass. I've only had it for a day, but I find the J and the P pickups sound better when the other is turned down. When both tone knobs are up the sound gets a little messy and there's a bit of hiss.
The pickups (especially the J) could benefit from stronger output, which is my main complaint about the bass. Other than that it sounds fine for practicing or even gigging with as a backup.
Action, Fit, & Finish

Action was set up slightly high, but this is preferable to having low, buzzy action. This bass played better than the Epi & Fender though the Fender had a fuller tone. The construction seems pretty tight; even the tuners, knobs, and strap butttons seem to be solid. There were a few minor cosmetic flaws (the end of the fretboard had a tiny chip, small lines in the finish) but overall an good job for a $200 bass. Jewel blue finish; not as dark as I'd hoped but evenly coated and thick.

Botttom line - great bass for a beginner, particuarly those who have been playing guitar first. Much nicer neck than comparably-priced basses (namely Squier Affinity's) and has both P and J pickups so you can get a taste of each before buying a P- or J-bass later on. A big improvement would be higher output pickups. If it were stolen or lost, I'd probably move up to a MIM Fender. But for the price (~$200) it is playability-friendly, like a lot of Ibanez gear.

Your average cheap bass. 22 frets, P & J pickups, treble, passive electronics (it's only a $200 bass). Probably the best feature is the both Precision and Jazz pickups. This allows for more tone variety.

The bass sounds Ok, not great. Maybe its my setup, but right now I can't get too many different sounds with this thing. Actually before I got the Zoom BFX 708, I could do little more with it than change the amount of treble. Someone said they didn't like the J pickup, but I find it very useful, and it gives it that really "bassy" feel that the fender Precision doesn't have. I should add that this bass is great for slapping, it just has that sound for it.

This is my first and only bass. I didn't bother changing the action or anything like that when I got it. I know it has really high action, and any other bassist would have trouble with it, but I've become really accustomed to it.
Like most Ibanez basses the neck is really thin. It is really easy to play and the reason I picked it over the Fender was because it fit much better for me. One more thing I should say is that this thing always stays in tune.
One more thing that attracted me to this bass over lets say the Fender or the squire: It doesn't have that dorky pickguard. For me a bass with a pickgaurd just looks like a guitar.

I have been playing this thing for about a year now. I don't know if it's the greatest bass, but it has worked for me. If it were stolen I'd only buy it if I only had 200 bucks to spare. Otherwise I'd buy a better one. I like this one because it has fit me very well, in other words all other basses that I buy will have small necks and a lot of action. I don't like that it has very littl sound variation.
When I tell people I've only been playing a year, they give me a kind of surprised look. I play in 3 bands and my band members sometimes tell to not even bother to come to practice because I know the songs too well. I can't say its because of the bass, but I'm trying to get the point across that this bass is great for a beginner.
Bottom line: Best bass for this price.

Sounds great for rock/metal style music. When the p style pickup is turned on full, a loud buzzing was emitted.I have played this through both a 15-watt Danelectro combo and a150-watt 2 speaker Ampeg B328- Sounds excellent on both.

The action was a little off, the strings were too low. The pickups were fine, and there were no chips, scratches, etc.

This bass could probably survive some gigging, but I'ts really a beginners bass. It's not really designed to last for over a year. The strap buttons came out of the body, but they could easily be screwed back in.

I really think this is the best beginner's bass on the market. Great Value for the money. Incredibly lightweight, fairly easy to use. It's a good buy for someone who wants to know if they will be any good on the instrument, but not one for a serious musician

Made in Korea, 22 frets medium size, 4 strings, solid body, 2 volumes and 1 tone control chrome, J and P pickups pasive, transparent finish. It would've been nice if it would have black hardware instead of chrome, but I just payed $160 for it at Ed's guitar in Miami

It sounds great, I like the deep dark sound of it, it is not noisy, the bottoms are full, I use a Peavey TNT 115 and a practice Epiphone amp, the sound is very warm, I really like it. It sounds good in Rock, Country and Latin music. I shopped around and I like the sound of this bass in comparison with other basses that cost more money.

I love that this bass weights nothing, I can play standing up and dancing for hours and I dont get tired, maybe because my previous bass was a little heavy, but I really like the weigh of this bass. I have gig with it and practice everyday, the strap buttons are solid, and it is very reliable

This is a great bass for the money, I am an intermediate player, I dont' think I would get rid off this bass, if I need to upgrade to another bass I would keep this one as a back up, I am not a sentimental guy this is my 3 bass, and I don't even have pictures of the other 2. But I am a good shopper (Cheap) and this bass is the best for the money, even other basses that cost more don't have the sound and action of this one

1999 model purchased from Sam Ash, made in Korea (I think). 4-string, 22 frets, agatis body, 1 passive Powersound P-pickup, 1 passive Powersound J-pickup. Tone controls for both pickups plus volume control. 0ne-piece maple neck, mine has the transparent red finish. Standard stainless steel bridge, (imitation?) Gotoh tuners, no accessories included. This bass has a much thinner neck than most other basses. Since I moved to bass from guitar I loved it, but many complain it doesn't feel "substantial" enough. however, since this is pretty much a "beginner" bass, chances are it'll be your first bass, so that won't matter. (I can't imagine anyone moving from a Fender or Gibson bass to a $200 Ibanez). Nothing here I can find fault with, even the tuners & knobs are high quality. Good, basic instrument, and Ibanez didn't cut any corners as far as construction goes.

Good, clean sound from the passive pickups - great for rock/pop/country/whatever. I have heard some people complain about the output level of the pickups being too low, but I have nothing to compare it too so I wouldn't know. Not a problem with my EQ with level control, anyways. Probably not the best for slap or jazz, but if you're at that level you have probably moved on to a more advanced instrument by now. I use this bass with a Trace elliot 100-watt Commando combo, and get virtually no noise (except through some of my exceptionally noisy effects). Bright tone, not exceptionally full. I have played it with others and was very happy with the sound - I eventually would like something with a little dirtier sound and more growl, but I eventually plan on picking up a Gibson with a humbucker for this. Ibanez obviously designed this bass to sound very clean to appeal to the widest range of players.

No complaints at all - I originally went to Sam Ash to check out their Carlo Robelli house-brand basses. After going through three basses that were completely umplayable (to the point that the sales rep took them to be returned) I tried the Ibanez through a Hartke Kickback and loved it. The store set it up for me and did a great job - it didn't need much done to it, anyways. The finish is beautiful and all the hardware was in perfect condition and (still) looks great. Most experienced musicians who check out this bass are amazed when I tell them how inexpensive it was. Some of the pots are getting a little noisy, but that's to be expected and it isn't anything a little contact cleaner won't fix.

I won't hesitate to play out with this bass when I get the opprotunity, and I have complete faith in its durability. Seems like it will last a long, long time. Even after I move on to a more advanced bass, I think I will always hang on to this one as a backup. Solid stainless strap buttons that haven't let me down, I think I might go to strap locks just for the added peace of mind. Hasn't needed any adjustment yet, but I am starting to get some fret buzz when I play near the neck, so I might take it into the shop soon to get the intonation set and a general once-over.

I switched to bass after playing guitar on-and-off for a couple years. I tend to be really picky, so I shopped around for a while before deciding on this bass. If it were stolen and I couldn't afford to move up to a better instrument, I would definitely consider purchasing another one of these. I have no complaints at all about it, overall a great instrument that you won't outgrow quickly, and you won't suffer embarrasment from playing a "generic" instrument in front of others. it looks and sounds as good as other instruments costing hundreds more. You should try any instrument before you buy it, but if you are looking for a high quality beginner's bass or a cheap backup that won't sound like crap, the GSR200 is great.

1999 Model, sold thru Musicians Friend. Korean Made. 22 Fret (mediums), four string model, jewel blue glossy finish, agatis body, maple neck, P & J style pickups with separate volume controls and joint tone control. Passive electronics. This unit came with a low-budget 8 foot 1/4" cord. It was shipped via UPS and was in flawless condition when received from MF. Please note that the ratings I provide are given with the thought in mind that is is a beginners guitar for under $200.

I am a beginning bass player, however I provided it to a friend at a local music shop here in Panama City and he was quite pleased at the punchiness and tone for such an inexpensive piece. I use it with a Fender BXR 100 amp and a Zoom 708 effects pedal. I can get all manner of zooty sounds from this pedal, but even with everything cranked clean it is crisp and clear with little hum until you're almost turned completely up on volume. I prefer the P pickups to the J, since the sound of the J seems somewhat muddy. The tone knob does compensate somewhat for the muddiness on the J pickup however. With this amp combo, I could easily remove the interior wall of my back bedroom with the volume on the amp cranked up over 2/3 and gain at 5.

This puppy is flawless, and has a really nice feel for such an inexpensive tool. The action seems a bit high for my tastes from the factory, but there were no loose parts and generally its quite a nicely finished bass. The neck is narrow and well tapered and very comfortable for my stubby fingers.

I would not hesitate to play with this rig in a live situation once I get to that point. Everything seems strong enough to withstand playing out, although I have wondered how the tuners would hold up...they just look a bit spindly and vulnerable. I baby this thing now, so it hasn't had to prove anything to me yet. I think the finish will last a long time, and is beautiful and deep. The strap buttons are quite secure and substantial, not like some plastic jobs I have seen on guitars of this same price range. These appear to be stainless and strong. This thing has held a tune perfectly since I got started with it three months ago. I keep it in the bedroom and seldom bend strings, so it just keeps on going strong. I don't see why I wouldn't use it without a backup, but they are so inexpensive, I could buy a couple more just for fun. I think I would pick a more expensive model for my next bass with active, humbucking pickups and luthite body to see what thats like.

I owned a Yamaha bass that I paid $250 for a couple of years ago, but the neck was so uncomfortable (thick)I never got interested in it and ended up selling it. It had a single set of P pickups but I don't remember it sounding that good either. I love this little Ibanez and always look forward to sitting down to a good evening of play with it. Thats really what all this is about, isn't it?
