Made in 1993. 24 frets. masonite body. passive lipstick tube pickups.
rosewood fingerboard.solid turquoise blue. simple rosewood bridge. not easy to set up, but it works. just be patient. volume, tone and three way selector. Bass is light and neck is 30" scale.Body shape
is like the danelectro longhorn that was popular in the 60's.
Only the quality is 10 times better.

Sound : 9
I play christian, classic rock and blues. Bass is perfect for what I
play. neck pickup reminds me of Geezer Butlers sound in early sabbath.
With both pickups on the sound is full and cuts through anything.
The bridge pickup is kind of thin and bland.Jerry has rewired the bridge pickup on newer basses which I also own. The newer pickup cuts and is good for soloing. Great bass live or in the studio.
Sound is kind of bright,so cut the highs in the amp, and you will be good to go.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Bass was setup well when I got it. That was 16 years ago. Fit and finish was flawless. I setup my own basses and this one as well as my newer neptune bass are easy to setup. The bridge is the only bad point but it works very well. kind of outdated though.I set my action up low, but you do need to play a little softer than say a jazz bass or any long scale bass. Strings are not as tight on a 30" scale bass,

Reliability/Durability : 10
This bass will last forever unless you crack somebody over the head with it. Stays in tune no matter the temp or humidity. Rarely needs adjusting unless you change type of strings. I have used this bass for years without backup. Never had a problem. A little spot of paint wear right where I rest my thumb on the neck pickup.

Customer Support : 10
Jerry is a great guy to deal with. He is patient and will answer all your questions. As far as I know, he is a one man operation.
He puts out a great product

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing off and on for 35 years.I own a newer Jerry Jones neptune bass also, which is a little different.(newer bridge style
and four way switch, with no tone control). Equally as good a bass.
Also epiphone thunderbird another incredible bass especially for the price. If mine was stolen, I would get another one. Or two!
Oh yeah .Don't use roundwounds, use flats or halfrounds. And yeah you
can slap on this bass pretty well too.

I had a semi major stroke a few years ago and loss use of my left side. After much work, I got to where I could play again. I had a hard time trying to play my G&L's. A friend of mine, Bob Fisher, ordered this bass for me because it was a shorter scale and so light. It works GREAT! It is extremely light and managable! Handles great. Sounds really good, expecially with GHS stainless steel flatwound strings. At first I didn't care for the sound, but I ordered some GHS stainless steel flatwounds and Man, did they make a BIG difference! I mean a lot better tone. Other pickers complimented on the sound. This is just about the only bass I play anymore. I got the sea green with black sunburst. It looks good and I have received many compliments, especially for those of the female persuassion. Light ain't the word! My gig bag weighs more than the bass does. The pickups are humbucking so no light noise. The bass is actually as short as my guitar buddies' strats and teles. I carry the bass in a godin guitar bag because of the better construction and bunch more pockets. I like the hollow body because of the sound and the light weight. The bridge is the old tried and true pbass style. The Gotoh tuners surprised me with their quality. I always liked maple necks because to me they were smoother and had a nice feel to the finished wood.

Sound : No Opinion
With the GHS stainless steel flatwound strings it sounds GREAT! With the stock roundwounds it pretty much sucks. I use the bass through a SWR with two 210's or just one 410 and it sounds great. Even outdoors on Beale street this past summer. Sometimes I use an Ampeg SVT350 with either two 210's or two 115's and it sounds great. Big and fat, like "fatback bass" should. Played it through a Gallien Krueger Micro Bass and a RB400III and it sounded good as it did through my Ampeg BA112 or my B2-115. It plays great, nice feel, light touch, good tone, handles wonderfully. I have played rock, blues, r'n'b, country, swing, bluegrass, just about anything and everything attempted on this bass has worked and well too. The tone is big and fat as I want it and able to cut through the mix when needed. The humbucking pickups mean NO NOISE period. Dandy neck. Nice feel. Straight as a preacher's you know what. Plays in tune all up and down the neck. The folks at Jerry Jones did such a good job with this bass that I really wouldn't mind trading a G&L or two off for a couple of more of these little rascals in other colors.

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
The bass played great off the shelf or hook or whatever they had it suspended by. After changing the strings I lowered the action and reset the intonation. Just changed strings again and checked the intonation. Just a hair off. on one string. Tain't bad. The bass looks good, no flaws, no finish problems. Tuners work well and love the old p bass bridge. The bridge is set far back on the body so that the bass is about the same length as a tele or strat. Good handling. Plays good. Good feel to the whole bass. Good tone. What else do you need except maybe a beer can holder built in or able to go ane get your money at the end of the night?

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
This bass has withstood my playing now for about three years and with no problems. I did replace the strap buttons with Dunlap strap locks and was the better for it. It held up for a summer of playing outdoors on Beale street and it still works great. Had to change strings though. But put on another set of GHS stainless steel light guage flatwounds. Don't mess with success or a good sound. Could I use it without a backup? A backup never enters my mind. If I had another of these Jerry Jones Longhorn Bass 4's then I would carry it just because it would be a different color, but that would be the only reason. The folks at Jerry Jones have gotten the making of a quality instrument down pat. The guitars they build work correctly from the gitgo and last. I am going to see if Bob would like to take a couple of G&L's on trade because the thought of a different color does sound pleasing and interesting. I mean, that sea green looks good but after a while, how about a red one? For the money, you can't go wrong. Oh Yeah, when playing those cramped little restaurants and coffee houses, you'll love the Jerry Jones because it so light and managable and SHORT! Did I mention that it's short?

I have not had to deal with the company yet. The guitar worked great from when I picked it up until now. Have no idea about how long the warranty is.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I have beed playing pbasses for about forty five years and would probably still be thumping around on one had it not been for my stroke a few years ago. This bass is all I wished for, something that I could handle and play. I wish that it came from the factory with GHS stainless steel light guage flatwould strings as they really do make the bass sound several times better. My Friend, Bob, did good ordering this bass for me. It works. It doesn't really look like a bass, more like a guitar, but it plays like a really good playing bass and it sounds like a bass. If it were stolen you bet your patooty that I'd be at Bob's door the next morning when he opened to get him to call Nashville and see what they had in stock so that I could drive there and get me another Jerry Jones Neptune Longhorn Bass 4.

2006 Made in the USA. 30" scale length and a 24 fret neck. Two Jerry Jones lipstick PUs. One volume and one four way rotary switch (neck single coil, both PUs in series, both PUs parallel, bridge single coil). Mine is in blood burst with a matching headstock (100$ Option and it's not listed on the web site). In essence a perfected version of a Danelectro Longhorn. The solid construction and satin finish neck give this bass a little bit of a Fender feel in the best possible ways. If you're into cars imagine a new Porsche 911 rebodied as a vintage VW Bug. I only give it an 8 because the matching headstock is not standard (I hate the way a bare headstock looks) and because there's no tone knob or switch.

Sound : 10
This bass is far from the typical solid bass sound. It is punchy and has just the right sound to really cut through the mix, but is not anywhere close to the powerhouse that is my Lakland. It???s actually a decent slap bass with the PUs in series and turned to the bridge PU it solos pretty well. I mainly play rock, blues-based rock and a little R&B. With bands I play an Ampeg SVT through a 1x15 and a 4x10; at home I play it through a Gallien- Krueger 110 and it sounds great through both. I???m constantly amazed by what this little bass can do.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
This is the area where I was a little disappointed. Because the matching headstock is an option I had to special order my bass, when it came in I had all sorts of buzz on the A string. The guys at the Mesa-boogie Store changed the string and re-adjusted the saddle. Other than that it was fine and it stays in tune really well.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This is NOT a flimsy little Dano bass, this thing is really well made. I???d have no problem using it as my main bass for years to come and I think I will! This is the area where that little bit of Fender DNA is noticeable.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Jerry answered all my email questions when I was looking to buy the bass; I imagine he???d do the same now that I???ve bought the bass.

Overall Rating : 10
I have many basses, mainly Jazz basses and interpretations of Jazz Basses (Lakland, Pedulla Rapture). This bass just makes life easy: it plays great, it sounds great, it???s easy to play and it???s very light. It's the best bass I've ever played for under 1000$, if something ever happened I'd order another the very next day. Life is hard, this bass makes it easier.

Not much in features, but hey, That's the point. This is basic stuff and the idea is to get back to the basics. The thing is made very well and having both a Dano DC bass and this thing I can tell you that the difference between the two is the difference between that fiberglass kit car you see on the road with the Volkswagon engine and a Ferrari.

Sound : 10
Ok... If you want the mega bass sound then this is not your bass. But let me tell you, playing live this is THE bass you need. 1. It is very light and you can go all night long. 2. It is punchy and has just the right sound to really cut through the mix. 3. It just looks really cool. Not much to listen to when you are just noodling around by yourself. But the character of it really shines when playing live.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Perfection.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This is NOT your $150 Dano DC bass. This thing is really well made.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to try it out.

Overall Rating : 10
I have many many bass. Jazz bass and Kubicki have been by main basses for years. For playing live I have found no better bass and I cannot beleive I did not have one of these sooner. If I had to pick one bass to take with me on a gig it would be this one. Don't get me wrong, I love my jazz and kubicki. But for live gigs this bass it the one.

Mfg. in 1996, USA. Masonite body (semi-hollow, methinks) 4 strings.
Short scale,bolt-on maple neck with rosewood board and pearloid dots. 2 Jerry Jones
wound lipstick-tube pickups are passive. Volume and tone knobs and
pickup selector switch. Copper painted finish on longhorn body.
Primitive,non-adjustable bridge/tailpiece with retro-styled button
tuners. Slimmer neck profile, decal logo on coke bottle headstock.
Nice big frets. Clear plastic pickguard.

Sound : 10
Jerry seems to know what he's doing. I play mostly roots rock, blues
and country and this bass really delivers. Shorter scale and lipstick
pickup combination cuts through the band on stage. A wee
bit bright for fret-eaters(roundwounds)- your mileage may vary. Am
always amazed in the studio- short-scale basses shouldn't sound this
DEEP. Pickups solo'd aren't overwhelming, but middle position yields
excellent results. Pick-N-palm mute playing sounds MEATY.
My only wish would be for an adjustable bridge.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Finish looks fantastic- I heard that they got original dyes from Dano
when they started out. I have no complaints about this instrument,
other than the difficulty in locating short-scale flatwound strings.
Fretwork is incredible for an instrument at this price point.
High quality pots and selector switch ensure quiet operation.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Never a problem, and I've used it on dozens of gigs in a variety of
styles. Finish is very durable- I usually prefer a bare neck, but this
doesn't bug me at all. No squeaky feel from clear-coat. Fits in a
guitar-sized gig bag and I've never needed a backup. Neck stays put.

Customer Support : 3
Well, they WILL NOT send you parts. Didn't expect full service, as I
bought her used, but... They say they make the stuff in small batches for in-house production only. I don't mean to be a whiner-
All I wanted was a replacement bridge- AND I was gonna' spring for a
hardshell case, too. Oh,well. At least the guy answers his phone.

Overall Rating : 10
Pro since 1983- mostly Lakland user, but own a few others. If it were
stolen I would absolutely buy another. Really comfortable to play
and your back will be greatful after the third set of the night. I
really dig the pickups-they're loud and clear. New Korean reissues
do not compare- buy a bass with a real neck, pickups, and professional fretwork
and feel the difference.
