-Very nice flame maple top.
-Two Volumes, One tone, One Humbucker Pickup

See: 5-string Musicman Stingray

WOW!!

I NEVER thought I'd beloving the sound coming from a Chinese Pickup' but it's nice, REAL NICE.

Very Versatile. Maybe not too uch of the fender P-bass stuff but most of everything else.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The setup at the music store was terrible, since it was the last one left and on sale I asked the in-store guitar tech to set it up. Came out beautifully!

The only Gripe is that the pick up buckles out a little bit in the middle. Poor screw alignment? Warped Plastic in the factory?
Don't know don't care- cant see it unless you're a few feet away and it sounds so good I forget all about it.

Chinese made circa 2005. 5 strings with 22 frets. 2 tone and 1 volume. Stingray style passive humbucker stock, I replace mine with a Seymore Duncan Basslines alnico Stingray passive humbucker. Not sure what the body is, but the neck and fingerboard are maple. Natural finish ("photo bookmatched") with tortoise shell pickguard (which had to be shaved to accomodate the Duncan pickup). Fairly generic, but solid hardware. Tuning machines 4+1.

Sound : 8
Nice tone with the stock pickup. Killer tone with the Duncan Basslines. I play through a Markbass combo with the band, a Peavey practice amp at home, or a Kork Pandora for late night practice so as not to piss off the wife. This bass has a lot of punch, but pull the treble back and it offers plenty of warmth. I use it both on stage and for some studio work. When recording, I will only use it if the song requires the low B or if I'm slapping. I use my vintage Electra 4 string for warmer studio tones, but the OLP performs these tunes fine on stage.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 5
I work at a guitar store, so I have the advantage of testing multiple products over a period of time to make my decisions. I tested about six of the same model before I found the one I knew I would be taking home. Even then, when I had a luthier friend of mine install the replacement pickup, I had a full neck adjustment and intonation done. I have had the sweetest action and no further neck adjustments have been needed in the past year since this was done. I also had the controls tightened as they were a but loose at first. Running my hand along the side of the fingerboard, I could feel some of the frets sticking out a little, but I don't notice this while playing.

Reliability/Durability : 7
I do play live with this bass. I have strap locks on it, so I haven't damaged it (yet). I tend to take great care of my instruments, so the finish and fretboard get a full cleaning everytime I change the strings and they show absolutely no wear. In fact, my bass looks better than new. As I mentioned above, I have had the truss rod adjusted. I keep my eye on it, but it hasn'e moved in a year. At the price I paid for this instrument, I have no worries about it. It can be replaced.

No opinion. Haven't needed.

I really do like this bass a lot. I needed a 5 string and couldn't afford more than the OLP at the time. Someday I hope to own the real Musicman that this emulates, but it's quite a good copy. My friends all laughed when I bought it, but now they all want to play it. For a musician on a budget, I recommend it. If you can afford more, I would say look to Schecter or Ibanez for better basses for not much more money.

If I hadn't come along, this bass would probably sitting in the corner of the guitar section in Sam Ash's Edison store. You see, the bass had fallen off the rack and its body was seriously damaged - a half inch crack radiated up from the strap pin toward the jack plug. The employee who witnessed the accident told me that some kid had put the bass halfway back into the rack and walked away. A second later, it thundered to the ground, wiping out a couple of Fender Squires and a Musicman Sterling. All three basses on the ground suffered damage;the Musicman earned a huge scratch from the MM5's tuning peg. The OLP bounced off the carpeted (cement) floor and crash-landed flat on its neck. I played the thing and found it to be a fantastically responsive instrument; notes felt organically warm and the pickup produced a broad spectrum of tones. After two weeks of checking the thing out, I bought it, knowing that I could carve out the crack, radius the body and finish it in oil.
The elm body was covered in a heavy coat of clear finish, which took a long time to remove. I reshaped the body, taking out the nasty crack, and made all the edges round and smooth. The new oil finish brought out a darker component in the wood's grain and now it looks and feels fantastic; I can feel the waves in the grain. Elm has some of the same qualities as ash.
The maple neck also had a thick coat of clearcoat(matte finish), which I replaced with tung oil.

Sound : 9
After all this work, I figured, "What the hell?" and routed out a spot for a J bass pickup near the neck. In went a Carvin HB50 stacked humbucker hooked direstly to its own output jack. Now this bass is a stereo monster . . . the J pickup for sub-dub-bottom, and the huge MM style humbucker for snap and growl. The MM pickup is very flexible; each coil provides a separate, useful tone. The front coil is closer to a PBass, and the rear coil is snappier. Very useful, responsive sounds.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
This bass needed its frets leveled and its neck tweaked. Additionally, I shaved the neck down about an eigth of an inch for comfort.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I figured if this instrument can fall 6 feet to the ground and still crank out warm, solid tones, it'll hold up under anything. Firemen could use this axe to bust down the front door of a burning house!

20 years experience.
Yamaha 5 string fretless, Aria Pro II SB 700.
Yes, I would replace this wonderful, inexpensive bass.
I love the simplicity of operation, the fat bass, the cranky trebles, and the even response from string to string up the neck.
I dislike the fact that it is neck heavy and is not so comfortable when played in the sitting position.

This bass is a 2002 model. Made in China. Body is Elm. (Thought that was only furniture grade timber-sounds good though)Has a maple neck/maple fret board and natural finish, chrome plated hardware (which is a lot more "shiny" than an actual Sting Ray 5 but very sturdy), the MM style Humbucker and strung with Roto Sound Swing Bass Strings (Dealer Option). The controls are simple (this why I bought this bass as well as a "real" Sting Ray 5 that I own), Two volumes and one tone control. A "Q" circuit has been added to this bass. (More on that later) It also came with a LevY Gig Bag. (Nice Padding)

Sound : 9
Surprisingly enough, this bass sounds exquisite for a bass that cost $299.00 from GC. Shocked me enough that I purchased it though I already own an EB MM Sting Ray 5. This pickup provides a true MM sound with out the active electronics. It has a little less top-end than the active MM 5 but my "Q" switch fixed that. The electronics were a little buzzy until I sheilded the control/pickup cavity with copper foil and really grounded the bridge. It covers the styles of playing that I do most often.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The set up was just a little high as was from the factory. (But then I've found that most guitars I've purchased that are even more expensive have not been set up to my liking-I'm just picky) Once a tech set it up like I like it, it was perfect. Some people complain about these necks saying they are too wide but it's perfect for me. It actually feels a bit better than my EB. I've never owned any guitar made of elm but this thing looks beautiful. The neck pocket is solid and tight. This bass looks way more solid than it's price would indicate. Someone really did their homework. I have not experienced any string buzz or rough frets. Imperfections = mojo in my book. : )

Reliability/Durability : 10
I bought this bass as a test mule for some things to improve the EB MM5 but I find that I play this bass more than I play the real one. It's that good. I've done several studio gigs and and a couple of concerts with it already and I was comfortable enough with it not to take a back up. It is solid as a rock. The finish is very deep an d glossy and seems not to scratch easily. I've switched to strap-locks but the stock buttons were ok. (It's my SOS to install Strap-Locks on all my guitars)

Customer Support : No Opinion
I haven't dealt with OLP but the dealer treats my conscerns about this guitar as if it were a $2500.00 piece. Heads up to GC for that. Hasn't needed a repair so far.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been a bassist for more than 24 years and own lot's of equiptment. I must say that the Asian market has really narrowed the gap in quality and workmanship in their products. It's remarkable to me that you can get this much instrument for that little money. I'm laughing al the way to the bank on this one. This bass for me is a blast to play and it just feels right. If I had it stolen from me, "Gustav" would find it quickly. I like it that much. I've added some special touches to enhance it just a bit. I fabricated a "Q" switch to change the frequency cutoff points on the tone control. (A spin-off from another of my all time favorite basses, The Gibson Ripper-remember the chickenhead knob?)All the pots have been replaced with Dixon Full Size. I install these on most of my non-Fender guitars anyway so this one had it coming. The feel is a bit more positive than stock pots though they weren't bad. I love the big sound this bass provides with the passive humbucker. I've played an MTD Kingston with a similar set up. This one actually sounds better to me. The elm is actually quite snappy and offers a good resonance. I wonder why you don't find more guitars in the market made of elm? Hmmmmm............

I feel that this bass would be ideal for an entry-level instrument but I wouldn't relagate it there. As a working professional, a few minute tweaks make this bass on par with instruments far surpassing the cost of this one. This is one piece I'm glad to have stumbled onto. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to move into "B"land. Definitely gets "Bang For The Buck" status in my book.

You can hear this bass in action on several of my songs at www.soundclick.com/bands/2/musicallymrm.htm

-made in 2001 or 2002 I think
-22 frets, 5 string
-2 volume knobs (coils), tone control 1 Musicman Humbucker passive
-body I think is elm
-natural finish
-Musicman style bridge
-standard tuners
-neck is maple
For the price, it's pretty good.

Sound : 8
It suits my style ok. I am a GOSPO player and it sounds alright. It's funny, when you bring down the second knob just a tad it sounds kinda like a Smith bass but it gets noisy after that. I wish it had more highs but it's fine. I use it through a Line6 bass pod into a Ampeg SVT 400something and a MesaBoogie 4x10 with horn. Like I said I wish it had more highs. It's probably better for live. It's cool because it does have that MusicMan sound though.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
The factory setup looked like a child set it up.No... it was just a little high for me. Pickup was tilted too much. I like it flat. The finish was good. The neck I didn't really like. It looked pasty and you have to break it in. A little too fat. I hated how the pickguard looked so I "customized" it.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This thing is really solid. The knobs get loose from time to time and so does the output jack put it's still pretty solid. The finish will last. Never had a problem with the strapbuttons. Solid.

I've been playing a good six years now. I own a Jay Turser 4string Warwick copy bass, 4string Fender Jazz(USA), 4string Musicman Sterling, Yamaha 5string RBX, some Ibanez that I don't like and my little brother has it at his house and this OLP. I'm going to put a single coil in it around the neck position to try to really get that Smith sound. I love this bass's growl. It's sounds thick but has good mids too. I only hate that it doesn't have enough highs. I was going to buy an Ibanez but I then I didn't because I heard this one and it sounded like a real Musicman so I bought it. For the price, it's a great value. One more thing, try playing your bass through a Behringer Eurorack MX602A! It gave this bass the highs it needed with virtually no noise but it's still punchy and retains it's growl. It's a 6 six channel mixer that's only like 80 bucks now. It's sounds spectacular! Check it out.

2003 model made in China, 5 string 22 Frets long scale, bolt on neck, natural finish. Volume and two tone. Musicman style pickup, passive (although it certainly doesn't sound passive).

Sound : 10
This bass sounds amazing. A very distinctive punchy sound. Almost on a par with my Rickenbacker 4003. The verstility of the sounds with its various contols is very good indeed, meaning the bass can provide anything from dampened finger work to popping slaps. When used with a pick for fast rocky numbers, this bass growls.

I've been using it for live situations and it certainly makes itself known amid the sounds of the other instruments. Fantastic.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
Set up was pretty good. Pretty standard. Made a few tweaks here and there, adjusted the bridge slightly, but otherwise fine. Finish good for the price although the scratchplate is not satisfactory. The screws had been tightened for too tightly, causing the scratchplate to buckle.

Reliability/Durability : 7
Seems pretty solid to me. The hardware seems solid and able to take a pasting. I think the lacquer coat on top of the wood finished body may not be too durable and after a prolonged period of use, may start to look tarnished. But, hey, I'll just buy another one.

One problem with this bass is that after playing it for an hour or so, my neck fingers cramp badly. I don't experience this with any of my other basses. Would recommend that if gigging with this bass, take a spare just in case.

Customer Support : 7
Not dealt with them, but the dealers I've spoken to have been extremely helpful.

Overall Rating : 9
Been playing bass for 15 years now, using a wide range of basses from dirt cheap to top class. My opinion is that this bass sounds just brilliant. Equally on par with any bass I own or have played. There are a few problems though. The neck, although very quick, turns fingers to iron bars after prolonged use and the scratchplate is very substandard. But, these are minor points and when I consider how much I paid for this bass, I can easily forgive it. In short, it sounds like a #2,000 bass, and looks and plays like a #400 bass. A definate studio contender, but a gigger only for the hardcore. But for #230, it has to be the best value bass on the market.

-2002 model, made in korea i think.
-22 frets 5 string
-volume and 2 tone
-fat humbucking passive pickup at the bridge.
-natural finish
-bridge is just like a musicman but doesnt say MUSICMAN on it like the real ones.
-idk what tuners....look like the musicmans.
-came with a straight-rightangled cable that i was pleased to get.

Sound : 9
i play funk and you know the usual slap shit. i got this bass because i have a real musicman stingray that i love (it has a bartolini PU)
so i figured i need a 5 string. I would like to get a 5 string MM but it was way to expensive so this was the obvious answer. It sounds good and poppy. Nice growl in the lows. It is rather noisy when you turn the 1st tone nob down. So i just dont do that. here my chain:
OLP or my REAL musicman--->dod FX25b envelope filter---->boss ds-1--->zoom bfx-708(crappy i hate it)---->Fender Bassman 100--->carvin 200w 6chnl PA

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
Ok, now the pickup isnt as high as would like. In fact its almost flush with the body. So i have no where to put my thumb. also, the string ation is a bit low for my taste. So once i raise the pickup and the action itll be ok.

this is a brand new 2002 Music Man clone made in china. five strings, 22 frets, maple neck/fingerboard elm(?) body. three knobs, one passive MM style bass pickup, passive. Neck is wide, but not deep. Felt good in the store, but after a couple of hours, actually fairly painful to play.
There were no accessories at all... Sam Ash was reluctant to even put it in a plastic bag for me... wanted me to buy (another) gig bag.

Sound : 10
The reason I bought it... it had that Music Man sound. The 4-string sounded like a cheap clone, but the 5-string sounded like the real thing. I love that sound. Rich, fat, deep, warm, just lovely

Action, Fit, & Finish : 5
The bass was set up well for a cheap bass, but not what you'd expect for a top quality bass. No flaws, this is just as good as it gets for this model; and if you're used to professional quality basses, its just not very good. After an hour or so, I had to put it down and pick up one of my other basses with better action.

Reliability/Durability : 7
Seems very solid. Not sure if I will ever gig with it, because it's just too hard on my hands. I'll sacrifice some sound quality for a bass I can play three sets with.

Customer Support : 4
No dealings. Sam Ash can be rough, though. A "New York" attitude like, "hey, dude, I'm just doing you a favor talking to you if you want me to sell you something, be prepared to kiss my Ash."

Overall Rating : 5
playing over 20 yrs, many other basses both expensive and cheapies. The sound on this thing is the bomb. can't tell it from a $1000+ Music Man. But for my hands, it's just too difficult to play for long periods of time. If it was lost, would not buy another.

I'm not sure were or when this Bass was manufactured. I've reaserched it, but every site says something different. Oh well. This Bass is a 5-string copy of the well know MusicMan StingRay5. It has 1 volume and 2 tone knobs through a Passive MusicMan style Humbucking Pick up. The Body is made of BassWood with a solid Black finish while the Neck and Fretboard are Maple. "Very Sweet" The hardware is very heavy duty and it gets the job done. This isn't the best but you deffinently get what you paid for.

Sound : 10
This Bass is perfect for my playing style. I, myself play many different styles from, Praise/Worship to Jazz to Metal. I'm putting it through a DOD Tuna, Boss Bass Equalizer, and an Ampeg 210 SP Bass Amp. This set up isn't much but it's all I need right now. I'm going to soon have a Samson Bass wireless so I'll have to see how good that works. Noise wise, its very quite and puts out an awsome tone. Using the tone knobs allows you to alter the tone to anything you need. I've never used it in a studio but it works wonders in the LIVE environment. You get a lot more then what you paid for.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
When I bought it, it came with a mid action. I later lowered it to satisfy my playing needs. The pick up was set perfect and I haven't move it yet. As far as I'm concered there were no flaws what so ever. Once again, You get a whole lot more then what you paid for.

Reliability/Durability : 10
It hasn't failed on me yet, and I've put it through A LOT of play time. Everything is very Durable.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to dill with them.

Overall Rating : 10
I've only been playing for around a year and a half, but it has been a strong year and a half for me. All I have to say is that this is one of the best 5-String I have ever played, and it is definitely worth the price. Maybe one day I'll get myself a reall MusicMan but until then, the OLP is at the top of my list. I recommend this Bass to anyone of any playing ability.
