Similar to a MusicMan StingRay, but the body is now basswood and the pickups are passive. Maple neck + basswood body = great tone and light weight.
Sound

It's not as bassy sounding as a bass with a neck humbucker, but it is bassy enough. This bass has more treble than a lot of other humbucker basses. For a bass with a single pickup, it has a lot of variety of tone if you know how to dig it out. I once owned an American Fender P-bass, and I like this bass a lot better. This bass can be made to fit into a lot of different music styles. I have never heard better sound at this price. For the price, it is a very solid 10. It would be about an 8 in absolute terms, price no object. The sound is very tight and organic, and the humbucker is very quiet. It sounds similar to a P-bass when the front coil half is used by rolling off the rear coil half. The rear coil half lends a good lead bass tone. I like the humbucker sound the best all the way around. Maple and basswood makes a very good tonal combination for bass.

The factory setup was to low for me, and there was too much neck relief. After straightening the neck and raising the string saddles slightly, I have nickel height action on the E string, which is plenty low enough. Frets are well done, and all the kerfs are filled. There are no buzzing or dead frets, except for the one dead fret that all wood necked basses have, which in this case is the 5th fret on the E string with factory supplied Ernie Ball Slinky strings. This is normal, even for my bass that sells for 6 times the price of this bass. The metallic blue finish seems tough. The maple neck is top quality wood and very smooth. Medium width and slim front to back. Works best with light to medium strings. The minimal finish makes for very fast handling, even better than my expensive American made bass. The neck needs more frequent adjustments due to seasonal humidity changes due to the minimal finish, but it's a snap on this bass. Truss rod tool is included. The tuning keys hold very well, and seem quite solid for the long haul.

Everything is solid and the bass stays in tune very well. This is more bass than you expect for the price. It should last for many years of hard playing. The knobs are chrome metal, not plastic. The hardware looks substantial. The plastic nut seems a bit too soft, but it is well cut and seems to work out OK. A solid 10 for the price.

It is a solid 10 at it's price point, but actually about an 8 in absolute terms. I prefer it to a Fender P-bass or J-bass. I play through a Marshall bass amp, and the two make a good pair. If you have only $230 to spend, give this bass serious consideration. This is the most value I ever got in a musical instrument, and I owned only American built instruments before I bought this. I would definitely buy it again.

so far what the other guys have said, passive, chinese, ernieball humbucker mine is black. mine is one of the first to come out of the factory, so all the had availible were black and having a matched headstock wasnt an option.

first i will say this, i have a love hate relationship with this bass. it sounds beautiful everytime i pick it up. i attribute this to all of the maintinence i have given it. this was one of the prototype models its number is something like 0000015. the newer ones arelighter weight, require less less work and have thinner necks. all of this i think of as a bad thing.the lighter weight makes the sound less bassy and also the thinner neck gives it the feel of a fender. which if i want a fender i'd just buy one. so basically when it comes to olp's and everything else the older the better ive had mine for about a year and a half and it sounds better everyday.

this finish is tuff as nails, i play rather fast and hard with a plec,
i chiped the paint on my fender many times due to this. My action? well that isa very tricky subject when i got it the action was what i consider to be high. when i say this i mean the strings where set pretty high. i have tweaked and i will tell you why they set the action so high in the factory. the frets i do believe should have been more lower. my bass in particular can not handle rotowound strings. the frets just cant handle the xtra large gauges i played on before i got this bass. but i found that get smaller gauges is better with this guitar due to its large bottom end sound. the pick ups are a work of art. i at first were going to change them but good lord after giving them a while of wearing and tearing they sound pretty good.this bass is extra heavy though and i love a heavy bass sure you cant due tie bo with it but who the hell needs to prance on the stage like a prisy fairy. i have a fat finger to add mass, i bought it in the rare case that i have to use someone elses bass. there is no need to use it for this guitar.

2001 model, made in China. 4 strings, two volume controls plus one tone, and a big 'ol fatass humbucker! Mine seems to be one of the few that has a natural finished neck and headstock! Almost every other one I've seen has the headstock and body matched in color. I love this bass because it has great response to alternative playing styles (poppin' and slappin'!!). I don't do much of any particular style, but blend them in all together. The pickup is passive, but since it is a humbucker, it has a bit more punch to it than single coils. Active pickups are so much better, and if you can........get a bass with them on it!! You'll get better output, and tone..........at least I think so. The finish is black, and it came with a white pickguard, but I couldn't stand the way it looked, so I stripped the guard down, and painted it flat black. Now it looks much better, and more menacing! Took a little while getting used to the 3 tuners on top, and 1 on the bottom. I kept tuning the wrong string for about the first week! My other basses have the tuners all on one side. Sheeeesh!! I give it a 9, because it does only have 1 humbucker, and volume and tone controls. It's fairly simple.

As I stated earlier, it has great response to slapping or popping styles. I get into the popping for certain songs, but usually stick to the standard finger style playing for most of the songs. You'll get that nice low end "boing!!" when you slap the E string just right, and the G string has a nice ring to it for popping. The one issue I have with it is this, the volume seems to drop drastically when you move from the E to the A or above. I'll be playing notes on the low string, and when I move higher, the sound gets real thin. It's annoying, because sometimes I can't even hear what I'm playing. It could be my style, or I need to tweak my controls, but I've done that till the cows come home, and I still can't seem to find a happy medium. For the most part, it isn't that big a deal, but if I focus on it, then it bothers me. I was using it through an older Peavey bass head and into a 4x10 cabinet. It's possible that the amp just didn't pick up the finer points of the guitar's sound. For whatever the reason, I give it an 8. It has great sound, as long as I can hear it.

I took the bass to be set up at my local techie's place. He's amazing with stuff like that. Once I got it back, the neck edges were rolled, and frets filed down a little bit extra. The pickup height needed little adjustment, and that was about it. It was in great shape for the most part, and didn't require much in terms of tweaking. (After all, it was brand new!) The finish was excellent, no blemishes in it or shipping damage. The pickguard was the only thing I had to take care of. A white guard on a black finish just looked cheesy. Now it's much better. Chrome hardware looks great against the finish, and when polished up, reflects stage lights well!

It's heavy as hell!!!! I have to do exercises to get my neck strong for this thing! After about 2 hours with it on, I start getting fatigued. From that point, I need some Advil, and a few beers! With that said, it's gotta be built like a tank under that finish! It has a vey solid feel, and the neck is beefy. This is the kind of bass that some guy who's 6'8", wears a size 16 shoe, and has gorilla mits, gets off on. I've gigged with it, and have had no problems. I didn't use a backup either, which is normally not a good idea, but since I don't beat the thing to death, I should be able to get away with that in the future. It maintains tune well, and only requires the occasional tune up after it sits for a couple of weeks or so. Very well constructed, even if it is from China.

I've toyed with the bass for about 6 years now, and my previous guitars were a Hohner ST which was a P-bass style, and a Hohner Jack custom. Don't ask why I only had Hohners, it just happened that way. The Jack had the Steinberger style system on it, and was real cool, but since the active pickups went on the fritz, I chose to bench it. Both of them are history now, and I have this plus a Peavey, a Cort, and an Epiphone. Two of them have active pickups, and as I stated before, they provide a much better sound and response. I chose this bass because our lead guitarist is from the "old school" and he talked about Stingrays and what they were good for. Well I can't afford a real E.B. Stingray, so I went with the El Cheapo OLP. I haven't been disappointed with it outside of the volume dropoff, and I would most likely get another one, unless I chose a bass with better pickups. I'm sure they make better p-ups for these, but again, I went with this one because I was trying to save money! For the price, you get a solid bass, and piece of mind. OLP has got something here.

I bought this bass, to check out how it plays...and I was shocked, IT'S GREAT, I was so happy with this bass, so I bought the 5 string the following week.
I'm a slapper, I always play Fender Jazz basses, but for the real Funky slap sound you need a stingray (musicman or OLP)
This bass beats every (Slap) competitor bass in its price class.
The sound is fat but the highs are nice and crisp.
This is The best bass for the true slapper.(with low budget.....haha)

It's a Chinese Ernie Ball, 2002, 21 frets, 4 strings, pearl Blue finish. It has two volume controls (one for each coil of the humbucker) and one master tone control. It has a Music Man Stingray tradicional humbucker, passive eletronics. The body is basswood and the neck is maple, with maple fingerboard (the same as the american one). It has the same specifications of the original Stingray.
I give it a 9 because of the passive eletronics and the basswood body, but that's not a big deal, I'm really satisfied with it.

I'm Brazilian, so I mostly play Brazilian music, some funk, jazz, and some old musics. This bass really fits well my playing style and all these music styles, in fact I think it fits any kind of music or playing style. I'm using it with a 100W amp (only for return) and direct into the PA, with just a little bit of reverb/delay. It has a really bright rich sound, i think it works well with any amp. I can have the tradicional Humbucker sound really good for slap and funk, a really great single coil sound. I think it's really good live bass, really powerfull in PA. I have no dislikes about the sound of the OLP Stingray.

I've been playing bass for like 5 years, i owned a jazz bass before, and the Stingray is far better than the jazz bass. I have a 5 string fretless bass and they are really a good live playing gear. If it were stolen I wouldn't think twice about buying another one. I think active eletronics would be great in this bass, but i'm really happy with passive, it sounds a lot more natural, more wood sound, less eletronics sound.
