This is a 1993 model, 3/4 scale neck. Spruce top, set walnut neck with rosewood fingerboard, walnut bridge, chrome tuning machines, 20 frets, piezo bridge pickup, 1 gain, 1 tone. It has the standard Ovation back. The electronics are passive, so there's not much control over tone, but overall it's not too bad.

Sound : 7
I do mostly rock, and rarely play this. For the most part I take it to the park and practice some of the band's songs. When the band first started, we were doing acoustic stuff, and this thing just doesn't have the oomph to be heard over a conga player and two guitars...not without an amp. Playing with these guys, I usually employ my Laney 50-watt 1x12 combo at low volume to be heard. Just jamming with a single acoustic guitar it holds it's own nicely. I've never used it recording, and don't ever plan to. The sound is 'ok', but nothing to brag about. Its acoustic sound is nice and warm, and it translates well when amplified through the pickup.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The setup has never had to be adjusted. The action is just right, and I've never had a single problem. The finish is nice, and has never chipped or cracked.

Reliability/Durability : 7
I don't know that I would trust playing this live. The whole bass just seems pretty flimsy in some respects, and this is probably due to the Ovation body style. It seems like it's plastic and one good fall would do the bass in. I've had the bass for 11 years now and have never had any problems with it, and have played it fairly regularly at home and several dozen trips to the park, and even two camping trips.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had the occasion to require their help.

Overall Rating : 7
I've been playing bass now for 15 years and play just about everything. Overall the bass is fine for my needs. I do wish it was a full scale bass instead of the 3/4, but no biggie. If it were lost or stolen, I would shrug my shoulders and buy something different and full scale with an active preamp.

2001, KOREAN 4 STRING ACOUSTIC BASS WITH PIEZO BRIDGE PICK-UP HONEY BURST COLOR. CHROME HARDWARE. SOLID TOP WITH GRAPHITE BODY.

Sound : 8
THIN SOUNDING COMPARED TO ELECTRIC BASS DUE TO LIMITATIONS OF PIEZO P/U. BUT NEVER OVER THE TOP NOR AGGRESSIVE. NOTES ARE WELL DEFINED AND TUNEFUL. INTEND TO SUPPLEMENT PERFORMANCE WITH A BOSS CE-2B.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
WELL EXECUTED FOR ITS PRICE. NO COMPLAINTS BUT AT TIMES FEEL A TAD TOO LIGHT. WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT IF BODY IS THINNER.

Reliability/Durability : 6
SOUND CRAPPED OUT A FEW MONTHS INTO USE AND REQUIRED SERVICING.

Customer Support : No Opinion
NEVER DEALT DIRECTLY.

Overall Rating : 7
ACOUSTIC BASS NICE FOR A CHANGE BUT WOULD NOT PURCHASE AGAIN DUE TO SEVERE TONAL LIMITATIONS OF PIEZO P/U AND BULKY BODY. WOULD ROOT FOR A CORT ARTISAN A4 INSTEAD.

Korean made. looks and sounds amazing though. 32 frets. standard acoustic-electric pick-up set-up. has a DJ-4 pre-amp. Top is maple, (natural finish) back and sides plastic (hard lycra?) and the neck is made out of mahagony. Ovatio tuners. sadly, no case...

Sound : 10
This is a great un-plugged bass! a couple people have said it's not very loud, but it's audible to me! i want to put some ernieball earthwood strings on it. the one's i have are rather dead. nice tone... think What it is by RHCP.. or Pea even. it's very well balanced as sound goes. plugged in it sounds likea fretted upright! and the gain control on the preamp helps cut feed-back! i plug it into a EB/Music Man HD-500 with the 2X12 cab... ohhh nice. (p.s. this set up kicks the booty off a Hueghs and Kettner Vortex (what my guitarist uses)

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
i got this used so... it's actually pretty well set up. it really needs new strings though. everything is great, i just need to glue a part of the bracing. (Minnesota is not kind to ovations). other than the bracing... marvelous.

Reliability/Durability : 10
i have yet to gig with this bass, although my band is doing an all acoustic set soon, so we'll see. other than the bracig problem, this bass seems like it will handle my barbaric thrashing (yup, i slap on it!) i want to get a case so i can transport is hear and there (ever fixed an ovation? trust me... you'll use words tha will make a sailor blush.)

Customer Support : No Opinion
never dealt with them. might have to though to get a case.

i've been playing for 5-6 years, giggin for about 3.. this bass suits me very well, and dispite what others say, i find is nice and loud, although on a gig i wil amplify it.i also own a EB/MM stingray, a fretless jazz-copy samik, an Electro harmonix bigmuff, electric mistress, and a q-tron. so this adds one more color to my tonal pallet. i justwish i had a case!!

A 4 string fretted 34" scale 2000 model made in Korea. Lovely honey burst finish. Fiberglass round back, spruce top, single mid depth cutaway 4" soundhole. Walnut headstock and bridge, chrome tuners, 21 fret rosewood neck white dot diamond inlays, adjustable steel truss rod. CP-400 piezo pickup, DJ-4 pre amp with bass, mid, treble, and gain controls. Nice feature is the battery check LED. Phosphor bronze strings. Additional purchase was the TKL hardcase, specific for the Ovation, due to the deep round back. And it was time for a new strap.

Sound : 9
Previously tried Dean acoustic only and a Yamaha acoustic / electric. The Dean acoustic only was very hard to hear above an acoustic 6 or 12 string and though nicely constructed I did not personally 'feel' comfortable with the sound. The Yamaha, with F holes and in a nice ocean blue finish, was more electric than acoustic and heavier than the Dean or Ovation. The Ovation sounds right, with good lows and highs and a nice ring. Good tonal quality. However it can't comepte against an acoustic 6 or 12 string without some amplification. If a PA is available I plug into that, otherwise I have an acoustic image clarus and a dean 10" cabinet for portability.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Factory setup was the usual too high. The action was lowered by shims and truss rod adjustment. Important note waas to be careful with the strings - best to wrap them around the peg first, else you may damage the headstock. The fit and finish was excellent. The honey burst finish was what fist attracted to me to the bass. This gentleman definitely does not prefer 'blondes'! The pickup needed a slight adjustment and of course a new battery, as this bass had been haning on the wall for awhile. There was a very tempting identical 5 stringer but I had to keep to a budget. We have all been there right?

Reliability/Durability : 9
A few live gigs inside and outside. The outside in the sun seems to put the tuning off a little, so it should be in for a service by someone more qualified that I. For now I tune the D and G a little sharper. Outside it's plugged into the PA. People comment about the sound and aside from a double bass, most have never seen an acoustic bass. This has been commented before...inside gigs I use the Clarus / Dean setup as above. Not quite happy with the comfort of the new strap, but otherwise the strap buttons and location are ideal, with little 'diving' occurring. I have a backup Fender Pbass just in case

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't had any problems yet, so I can't comment. As the case had to be ordered through the Ovation distributor, there was no hassles there, so expect that support should be okay

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing abass for over 5 years. Previously played a 6 string acoustic and electric. The switch to bass was due to a lack of good bass players at the time. Subsequently, I really like the Ovation and have been hankering for an acoustic for sometime. This Ovation fits my needs perfectly. I had looked and tried and played a few other acoustics. This Ovation appealed to my ears for the sound and the eyes for that honey burst finish.

This bass in the `99 model made in Korea. Acoustic with Ovation round back. 34" long scale. Single cutaway and traditional soundhole. Walnut headstock and bridge, chrome tuners, nato 21 fret neck (10 inch fingerboard radius) with dot and diamond inlays, adjustable steel truss rod. Natural finish. Piezo pickups with bass, mid, treble, and gain. Battery check LED.

Sound : 9
Comes with phosphor broze strings. Very nice sound, but like most acoustic basses is not loud enough to be played with an acoustic guitar without additional amplification. EQ and gain controls allow for a variety of sounds.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Factory set action was very high. I removed one shim from the bridge and adjusted the truss rod for better playability. Fit and finish was excellent. When I perform in public, people are drawn to this bass. It has the distinctive Ovation look (duckbill headstock, round back) and many people have never seen an acoustic bass guitar.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Looks and feels like a solid instrument. I spent an extra $99 Canadian for the hardshell case so I could drag this bass down to the beach.

With properly set action, this is a great bass, especially for the low price. I'd buy it again, unless I could get a more expensive model used for the same price. I've been playing about 14 months and also own an Ibanez Soundgear SR406, Epiphone Viola, and Vantage Avenger Fretless (see reviews).
