if you want features you get them with the peavey dyna series. they are hard to find anymore, but dude you need to try it out if you ever come accross one. bridge is string through with adjustible heights and distances for the strings. i've only ever physically seen one of these basses before (mine) and it's transparent white with 2 black passives and a longer active pickup near the bridge that is INCREDIBLE. neck through with 24 fretts. 5 controls including a switch for the active / passive. if you want a sound you will get it here. if you can't find the sound you want with this bass you need to find a different instrument.

the only negative to this bass is the light weight body. the neck outweighs the body by a significant amount so playing live can be tiresome on your board hand since you're holding up the neck while you play. if that doesn't bother you then no big deal if it doesn you might have to get creative like do and get soem weight on the body under the plate in the back. easy enough to do you'll figure it out.

Sound : 10
this bass is the best sounding bass i have ever played. i play metal and rock mostly but as any bass player i dabble in it all at times. i like a great low end and highs that don't make me go wtf? this bass does it all very well. i've had this bass since 1992 and it's jan 6, 2006 right now and i have yet to find a bass with a better sound or feel while jamming. if you find one play it. if you find one and don't like it send me the location!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
the only other negative with this bass besides the unbalanced weight between neck and body is the neck warping. i found myself adjusting the rod every so often when i kept this baby in my basement which was slightly damper than the rest of my house. it would start to bow at times but since i brought it upstrairs about 6 years ago i've had no problems.

Reliability/Durability : 10
i bought this new in 1992 and i am still using it as my primary bass. need i say more?

I *think it's an '88. This has got to be one of the best basses ever made, regardless of it's mid-level price. There is nothing this bass can't do, in the hands of a capable player. All the particular descriptors are in the other guys' review, no need to rehash. Got mine NOS in Dothan, AL at Metro Music. The active side pops really hard when you switch, but it's worth it to bang out the funk charts. Otherwise, I generally dial in a very nasal, Jaco-esque tone. I'd love to take the frets out of this one...

Sound : 10
It plays everything.......I mostly play jazz, and it swings, and funks, and sambas, and bossas, and man o man you can get around this neck to solo. You can basically dial in any sound you can think of, especially through a decent amp.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The setup on this bass was beautiful, even untouched in the case for 14 years when I bought it. Thanks to whoever held this in their store and didn't sell it. The neck-through is wonderful, nice straight neck, like the bridge (though if I could fit a badass, I would). The pop in the switch, like I said, sucks. But if you can get over it, it's a GREAT bass. 9 1/2....since you can't pick it in the dropdown.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I play this one everywhere, never need a backup...it'll eat a battery up, so keep a couple on hand, but it's worth it. Had to glue the pickup covers back on once, but that's cause I get to beating a little too hard sometimes....it takes a lickin' and keeps on ticking. GREAT BASS.

Haven't dealt with them on this bass, but Peavey is great. And, you can download the manual from the website, so that's cool too.

Been playing electric/upright for eight years now. Haven't come across a bass I liked better. I have a friend who bought an american deluxe Jazz...and I would play the Peavey over it any day. That may sound weird, but...you've got to play this bass.

Recently acquired a well-traveled USA made 1989 Peavey DynaBass Unity series. (There were DynaBasses and Unity basses also, but these are different, the DynaBass Unity series was only made for a few years. The DynaBass is bolt-on and the Unity has different controls.). This bass was a four-string model with 24 frets. Contorls consisted of volume, pickup blend, and 3-band active EQ (powered by one 9V battery). The mid control is countoured and controls multiple bands. The high and low boost and cut a single band. The P-J pickups are passive humbuckers. I am uncertain of the body wood, but the design is neck-through. Finish is a beautiful burgundy. Bridge it fully adjustable and the tuners are non-locking. All hardware is black chrome. Neck is medium-thin with low action and has a rosewood fretboard.

Sound : 8
I bought this to provide a warmer sounding alternative to another more expensive bass with active pickups. Played through a Hartke rig, the unit can pop and snap when slapping, or get edgy when played with a pick. Played fingerstyle, though, is where it shines. Not quite as mid-heavy as a Jazz bass, it has a full warm bass sound. With the active EQ (which can be bypassed) you can dial in many sounds.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
This unit is 15 years old and shows signs of hard use, so it is hard to rate this factor. The action was set medium-low, and the neck was fine. The pickups were a wreck - some cretin had cranked them all the way down into the body. I had to remove and re-mount them. All the controls and hardware, however, were in good shape aside from a missing battery cover. A few hours of cleanup and $25 of parts from Peavey turned this back into a gig-ready bass.

Reliability/Durability : 10
As I said before, this bass appears to have been played quite a bit and abused somewhat. Even with this in mind, it was playable when it arrived and the finish was nearly flawless. I had to undo the work of some would-be guitar tech who made someunwise setup changes, but these were easily done (bridge spacing, pickup height, etc.). This thing is a tank and will continue to be a part of my bass arsenal for years to come.

When I called Peavey, they were able to tell me the year of manufacture and look up the part #s for all the parts I needed. I was astonished when they only charged me $25 for the parts, shipping included!

I had one of these basses new a long time ago and had to part with it, much to my dismay. When I saw this one on eBay, I knew it was in rough shape, but I bought it anyway, hoping I could fix it up. Well, this diamond in the rough shined up well! I really like the warm sound, the active electronincs, and the easy playability. If you can find one used in a shop, get it!
