I believe this is a mid-nineties vintage, 4-string P/J bass. Heavy poplar body, maple neck w/ rosewood fingerboard. Open gear, "Fender" style, clover leaf tuning machines. Graphlon nut. Nice, solid cast steel bridge with adjustable (height and intonation) saddles. It also has a adjustable tilt neck. It has P and J style active hum cancelling P/Us and a 9 volt preamp. Volume/Volume/Tone control.

Got this used, basically in "dead" condition, but after some repairs and a good setup this bass is quite the player. The heavy poplar body and maple neck have a really resonant quality. I like the P pickup dialed up full and keep the J volume control at halfway or less. With the treble tone rolled off a bit, this thing thumps like a vintage P. The bridge is solid and the bass has nice sustain and tone. My one complaint is the J pickup is really nothing more than a tone adjustment. You can't play the J solo (too thin), but it does allow you to adjust the timbre of the output. The noise level is low and the output is pretty thick.

Well, as I said, I got this used and it was in miserable shape. The pickup height adjustment screws are pretty well stripped and the nut needed to be re-built. I also had to replace the pickguard and get one new tuner that was loose (Peavey still had them in stock !) But I've got the action low, the neck is straight, the frets are finished well and, as all Peaveys, the overall construction is solid. I need to throw some foam in the battery comp. as it just rolls around loosely.

This is what I call my "camping" bass ! I just throw in the back of the truck and don't worry about it. Its solid, durable and simple enough that there is nothing that can't be fixed up or replaced fairly easily. Its primarily a backup, but if I gigged it I wouldn't feel the need to have a backup.

Peavey does a pretty good job here IMO. I called and got some replacement tuning machines and a new pickguard and actually spoke to a real person within a couple minutes ! Pretty good for a major manufacturer these days !

I've been playing on and off for 25 years and have owned about 10 different basses in that time. This is the only bass I have ever bought that I would characterize as a "beater". But it sounds great, looks classic, plays easy, and I don't worry about it. I've put more work into it that any other so it will probably stay with me for a while. Overall, a solid P copy with some funk to it.
