The Peavey pre-amp is VERY quiet and works extremely well run naked into the board for recording. Overall, it's a great tone. The MM pickup has a considerable amount of output compared to the J pickup, but I use the J about 99% of the time, so it doesn't become much of an issue.
Action, Fit, & Finish

Action: The set up was ok. I am never satisfied with factory set-ups since I do a lot of fret tapping above the 12th fret. I had to shim the neck several times to find the proper angle for my playing style and get the action lower since I bottomed out the saddles. Now it plays great. When I met Billy Sheehan and he played it, he thought it played quite nicely.
Fit: The elongated top horn makes for some exceptional balance (zero neck dive). The bass fits me well and is easy on my shoulder after long recording sessions.
Finish: Flawless. The body was alder painted black over a very figured wild flame top painted tiger eye. This bass was a NAMM show floor piece due to the exceptional top. The back of the neck has some of the best bird's eye maple I have ever seen. The fretboard's bird's eye maple was ok, but not as good as the back of the neck. It's certainly a very pretty bass.

I haven't had any issues, but I have only had it for a few years and haven't gigged it extensively. Since I set my action where I wanted it about a year ago, I haven't had to touch anything. It's dependable, but I'd never gig any bass without a backup. That's just me, though.

Helpful but can be unorganized.

Aside from the work it took to get my action where I want it, it has been a very low maintainence bass that is a joy to play
