Features have been covered already. Mine is the plus model, so it has the added hipshot D tuner and straplocks. Maple neck and fretboard. S/MM pickups. The variable mid control plus the above make me give it a 10. Not much more you could really ask for.

Sound : 7
I should let it be known that for years I've been playing a Musicman Bongo, and a MM HS Stingray. I play through a GK 1001 w/neo 2X12 spkrs. In comparison to the MMs the Millenium lacks thickness and punch. It seems a bit barkier, and while it can sort of imitate the Stingray sound - it does NOT nail it. The Millenium sounds a bit thinner and barkier. That's OK for me though as I wanted it to have it's own personality.

I should also note that I had to radically change my amp EQ pumping the bass and highs, and I pushed the bass and treble on the millenium to 10 for most of my sound experimentation. I was slightly dissapointed in the treble as I wished it could put out a little more. Felt like it should go to 15 as opposed to 10. Surprising too cuz it's an 18 volt preamp.

With the bass and treble dimed, it was fun to use the pickup blend and variable mid to get lots of sounds. The bass can cut like a knife and has a lot of versatility.

Used it for some slapping stuff last night, and while it can get a pretty snappy thing going, it was hard for me to dial in anything that cut like my other basses. I think it may take a little time to figure out what works best with amount of EQ options.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Bought it on ebay as a new old stock. No idea what the factory setup was like, but his bass is impeccable. Awesome fretwork, finish, nothing rattles, everything rock solid, great action, no buzzes. I was a bit concerned about what someone said here about having action issues - none on mine. I've played these in stores over the years and every one I ever played played like a dream. If I could give action, fit & finish a 10+ I would. Uhh... I just did, didn't I?

Reliability/Durability : 10
The bass was hanging in a store for 6 years. I imagine it's gone through lots of hands, and it still seems solid as a rock. I would completely depend on this thing.

Customer Support : 9
I've dealt with Peavey concerning their amplification in the past and I've never had any complaints. Their current website is slow as shit though. :)

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing professionally for almost 20 years, everything from metal to punk to lounge music. I bought this because years ago I played one, loved it in the store, and felt I had to get it out of my sytem. The pricetag on that first one I saw was about $1,100 so at $405 I was very very happy. This bass is sooooooo worth that and more. It's really light too, and I'm an active and energetic player - gives me lots of freedom. I like that.

Just want to add a note here. This is partly opinion, partly fact. The resale value of these things went down considerably from when they were first manufactured (over $1000 to around $400) because of what may have been a mistake (or just some kind of temporary insanity) from musician's friend. A few years back, for reasons unkown they blew these basses out at around $400. While that was great for whoever got one, it kinda sucked for those who paid a whole lot. Hence - while the sound and quality were worth lots more, the value has gone down considerably. I think you'd be real hardpressed to find a better quality instrument in this pricerange. This is NOT a $400 bass.

2000 american made model. good preamp, mm + j pickpups. 18 volts. Alder body, quilt top. BMF fingerboard.

Sound : 8
This is a VERY gritty and pissed off sounding bass. It sounds harsh like a music man. It is versatile, but the grit is always there, unless you completely pan to the bridge pup.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 5
Very good wood and build quality for the body. The neck is supposed to be birdseye, but there is no figuring to speak of. It looks like rock maple to me. There is a major problem with the bridge. The saddles bottom out before the action is low. I do all my own setups and have been playing for 13 years, and honestly i have gotten cheap korean basses to have way way way lower action than this bass. So consequently it is not easy to play. If the action were lower i would play it much more often. Do the previous reviewers even know what low action is? I wonder what they are comparing their milleniums to in order to conclude that they have low action...maybe i just got a lemon.

Reliability/Durability : 9
very durable and reliable. never has problems

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 8
This is a good sounding bass. It would be good for rock/funk, but i would use my carvin for anything that needed to be smooth. I would love it if it had lower action.

Have no idea when this was made, but I aquired it in 2004 used from Sam Ash music in Westminster, CA. USA model, purple quilt top. Tons of control with on-board active pickups and EQ. D-tuner on the E string for quick 1/2 to 1 step detuning and retuning. Had to buy my case separately.

Sound : 10
Amazing! I've played funk, metal, punk and rock n roll on this bad boy and it's sounded great every time. The beauty of it is, in my opinion, all the on-board sound controls that can really set the proper tone for the bass prior to the amplifier. I recorded half of an album with it and used it on stage a dozen times. It never failed me.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Nice low action, but I don't know if it was like that from the factory or from an in-store setup. I have yet to adjust the neck or pickups myself, since it really is set up nice right now. The D-tuner wasn't set properly when I bought it, but turned out to be an easy adjustment that has to be made every now and then anyway (about once or twice a year is enough). I find it to be one of the most comfortable basses that I've ever played (not THE most, but I'd say in my top 5).

Reliability/Durability : 9
YES! This bass has yet to let me down. All the hardware and wood seems to be extremely solid. Unlike when I play guitar, I have shown up to gigs with this bass ONLY and had a wonderful time without having to worry about anything going wrong. Just make sure to keep a 9V or two handy for when they run out!!! (and don't forget your screwdriver!!!)

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to use them.

Overall Rating : 10
I'd have to say that this bass is one that I would keep forever (except, of course, for the fact that I need cash NOW!)... haha. Turns out that trying to resell this sucker is harder than it sounds. Since Peavey went and started making the Millennium BXP and AC BXP models (yes, the cheaper ones), the demand and awareness for THIS bass has gone by the wayside. It's still a perfect fit for me and I would reccommend it to anyone else that wants to give it a try!

2001 Peavey Millenium 4 Plus (USA). 22 frets, real figured Maple top in Margarita finish. 18 volt active j/j pickup configuration. Straplocks. Drop-D tuner. Tone/vol/blend/mid/high/low. Hard shell case included.

Sound : 10
I play classic rock, country, pop, and blues. I was in the market for a passive bass, but this bass sounds fantastic for what I do. I was surprised at how versatile it is, and I absolutely love all of the tones that I can get through it. The 18 volt circuit is head and shoulders above the 9's that I tried. I can thump along in a low, floor rattling tone or bring out the mids for a tone that cuts through the mix during bluesier numbers.

Don't confuse these USA made models with the overseas BXP's, because the USA's are far above in playability, make, and sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
To be fair, I am the first owner of this bass, and it was originally set up and made in 2001. I bought it in January of 2005! The shop had greatly reduced the price because patrons had said that they didn't like the color (which I found stunning). I had to have the battery connector replaced (one of the wires came off of one of the contacts) and it happened to be during the 2005 NAMM. Try to find a tech who didn't go to NAMM this year. Ugh! After a change of strings and adjustments to the setup, it was back in action. I've got it set about as low as most guitar players, and it smokes. I can't find a single flaw in the wood or finish. The fact is that everyone who has asked me about it has remarked on how beautiful it sound and plays. I got lucky with this bass.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I'm not your typical pop, country, classic rock, blues player. I play with both fingers and a pick; and I jump around the stage like Angus Young on Jolt Cola. This bass's response is crystal clear every second. The only bad notes come from me. The factory included straplocks happen to be the same Jim Dunlop model that I used already, so my straps are a snap-on away. I gig it w/out a backup and I'm confident in its sustainability. No complaints in this category. Remember, I bought this bass new and it had been around for 4 years already. I am duly impressed.

Customer Support : 10
Peavey has an excellent support system in place. Since the USA models had been discontinued for 3 years when I bought it, and I saw a lot of "Millennium" basses for about half of what this one was marked, I sent the serial number to Peavey and asked them about it on the Peavey forum. They gave me an answer within a few hours, and they were able to give me details including where and when it was born, finish, woods, etc. They also sent me a .pdf of the users manual. I have refered people from the Harmony Central bass user's forum, and they have had similar dealings.

Overall Rating : 10
I have played guitar for years and am relatively new to bass. This experience has been very positive. If it were lost or stolen; I'd have to search ebay for a new one or go with a custom shop Cirrus. I compared this to a Fender J and a Fender P (USA) as well as an Ibanez 800(?), Rickenbacker 4003, and others. I don't regret my decision at all.

wow... the 1st time i picked this up i thought it was really good... the more i play it the more i find the sounds that i want... origionally i would sit and play a little and think, ok this is great but what about that other sound i want... the more i play it, the more i find what i want... this is amazingly versitile... ive owned probably 30 basses, some of the most notable being: spector ns2000/4 neck thru, spector rebop, g&l sb-1, g&l sb-2, g&l l2000, gibson ripper, gibson g3, jackson jpb-8 and a bunch of others that i cant think of right now... the point is that all of these basses were of good or better quality and none of them had the versitility of this bass... especially the g&l l2000, people say you can pull any sound out of those but i wasnt nearly as impressed with the l2000 as i am with this bass... if you need a different sound, this nails it every time... i can attribute this to the 6 different control knobs that let you have an infinate variety of settings... what a pleasure to play... a lot of the basses that ive had havent really motivated me to play but this one is so rewarding since i can dial in any tone i want that i can barely put it down

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
i got this used off ebay but the action was set nice... everything is well put together and the neck joint is nice and tight... you can tell this bass was made in america in a factory with excellent quality control

Reliability/Durability : 10
the guy i bought it from gigged with it for over a year so i would have to say that this thing will take a beating... the finish is very robust

Customer Support : No Opinion
i havent dealt with peavey yet... i wish i could find the manual for this bass on their website but its not there since they no longer make this bass... what a shame, maybe ill give them a call

Overall Rating : 10
getting this bass was a great decision... it motivates me to play because of its fantastic sound, comfortable thin neck, great balance, and awesome versitility... im going to be looking for a millenium 5 pretty soon... i cant say enough good things about this bass... i almost forgot, its pretty damn light and easy on the back... the hits just keep on coming... ive been jonesing for a peavey g-bass but now im wondering what the point would be, since the g-bass doesnt have the same electronics or the same versitility... from what i hear the top of the line peavey cirrus doesnt have the same preamp either, which is shocking because a lot of people have told me it cant get as many usable sound as these millenniums can... if this had the graphite neck from the g-bass it would be perfect, i think thats the only thing i would change... you simply cant match this bass for the same price... it easily beats out some other basses that ive played that were far more expensive too... its wonderful

Absolutely amazing. You can get any sound you can imagine, from classic jazz and P-bass sounds to more modern, in-your-face sounds, and all of them sound perfect. While I prefer to play with my own tone, I tried to recreate the tones of many famous bassists of the past and present, and was able to nail ALL of them. The onboard EQ is versatile enough to allow you to set your amp to the room and make the actual tonal adjustments on the bass itself. The combination of a MM-style pickup in the bridge and a J-style pickup in the neck gives you unlimited sound-shaping capabilities, and when combined with the EQ is capable of mind-blowing versatility.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Plays unbelievably smooth, largely due to the pau ferro fretboard. It's just a joy to play. No major problems to speak of.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Seems pretty solid, although I'm very protective of my instruments, and even when gigging it has never been subjected to a serious test.

Customer Support : 10
Peavey has THE BEST customer service on the planet. I called with questions about the differences between the Millennium 4 and the 4 Plus. Rather than put me on hold for several hours and then try to bluff their way through questions they didn't know the answer to (like F#$&#@ did when I called them), they got somebody knowledgable to call me back in about 10 minutes (and he was out to lunch when I called, or it would have been even quicker). He knew almost all the answers to the questions I was asking, and when he didn't know the answer he took the time to find it out, rather than lie and make something up. If there was a 15 rating available I'd give it to them.

Overall Rating : 10
This is by far the best bass you can buy for under $1000. I would actually put it up against a Modulus, although the top-of-the-line Moduluses would edge it out. I'm not one who is prone to glowing reviews, and the fact that I gave this one such high marks is a testament to just how good it is. No matter what style of music you do, if you're looking for a great bass but just can't afford that Modulus you're looking at, give this one a try, and you're be more than satisfied.
