American made in'79, it has the standard, (almost universal), natural finish, and the features everybodyknows and loves. The string through design, brass nut, heavy duty everything compounds into a beautiful, deep sustaining sound. Lots of varieties can be dialed up, too. Lots.

Sound : 10
Jazz and Funk played through a Nemisis 210 most of the time, very full sound with mids and top needing boost, for my taste. It has completely dominated my playing time over my other vintage Jazz, P and Ric beauties. Really sweet in the upper frets. Easy and also fun to play.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
After twenty three years, it's stable, easily adjusted, and looks great. The three piece wood pattern wasn't a beauty priority on this one, bland when it doesn't need to be. Finish is still excellent; feels very strong and solid.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Except for the aged wood effect, this thing appears to be new! So thouroughly concieved and well built, it's taken on a timeless air of a classic. Placing it next to my 74 P, also natural, it's strengths emerge, making the P look almost fragile. Something tells me that this guitar inspired Leo in creating the G&L line. Compare them and you'll see.

I here romours of great service...

The Peavey T-40 is an emerging classic! I've enjoyed owning more than twenty basses over 10+ years, and this one is my fave. Peavey should re-issue and make a 5 string T-40, as well. Grab two while they're cheap and plentiful. My plan is to buy three and have one of them sell later to cover costs...

Got it off eBay, best purchase of my life!

Let's do the list:
- Late 70's.
- 20 frets.
- Volume, tone, selectors, etc... [4 knobs, 2 switches, you get the deal].
- 2 humbucking pickups.
- Passive electronics.
- Natural wood finish.
- Case, cord, wax.

Sound : 10
As far as style goes: alternative rock, rock and roll... etc... just kickass music.

Using a Peavey TNT 115S. Very rich sound, especially when coupled with effects on the amp.

I recently purchased a Fury 4-string, and the T-40 blows it clear out of the water. All likes... no dislikes.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Must have been set up well, because it's 20+ years old and still kicking ass.

Reliability/Durability : 10
See above statement.

I'm a Peavey bass guy. Amps, basses... all Peavey... and it's all excellent [the older, the better]. If this T-40 were stoledn, I'd go right out the next day and bidon another. Love the sound, definitely my favorite feature.

The only real complaint I have is the pickups will eventually need to be changed or re-finished, but that's just cosmetic damage caused by picks... no one's fault. Great guitar, everyone should own one!

Peavey T-40 made in USA, 4 string bass with 4 controls and 2 selector(ono of those was not functional), one volume control and one tone control for each pickup, 2 double coil pickups, passive controls, white color, seems like a fender body, 34" scale, case included.

Sound : 7
It has a good sound sound for jazz, high output volume(passive), I used this bass trought a 50 watt amp without any effects. Very clean sound. The E string was awful.... I never could make that its sounds bright... I changed the strings and adjust the pickups.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 3
One of the selectors didn't work when I bought it. The neck was bend.
VERY VERY heavy bass.

Reliability/Durability : 7
This bass it's VERY solid, It can kill somebody if you hit with it on the head. All the hardware it's pretty solid.

I just sold this bass for $100 with case. This was my first bass, and I just hate it, but I have tested other basses and compared with it seem like toys. This bass sounds ok for classic rock music, not too bright but good sustain.
I just have buy my first 5 string bass, a Ibanez SR405 :D.
Sorry about my english!

US made in 1982, 4 string bass, ash body, mapple neck, rosewood fingerboard, 20 frets, 2 humbucker pick ups, 2 volume, 2 tone controls, phase shift, passive electronics, olympic white finish. Came with a hardshell case and tools.

Sound : 8
I play mostly country and some sort of blues with this bass trough a Peavey TKO 80 amp. It's not noisy at all, but it has some buzz when I pick a string (never knew where it came from, but it's from the bass...). It has many sounds thanx to the two pick ups, the phase shift and the tone controls, but it just doesn't have the one I'm looking for. I'm also a lead vocalist and I'm not a great player, I need the bass only to play the basics.
I always missed the highs. This could be, because I bought it used a few years ago, and it has damaged frets and saddles. I've tried many strings, but it's just not the sound for me, altough good sound. I used it in a studio for a demo, but the sound was a bit muddy.

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
Bought it used, so I don't know how it was set-up at the factory, but it's ok now. It's 20 years old, so it has the marks of time, but that's to be expexted.

Reliability/Durability : 7
The tuners are ok, but the screws are often loose. The finish is a bit worn, 20 years of abuse... I replaced the strap buttons with strap locks, its solid. I'm not a professional, so I don't use a backup. Never had a string broken, or any problem with it. When I bought it one of the pick ups didn't function, some soldering was broken. Still dislike the worn saddles. It has large metal parts and weights a lot. It won't fall to peaces, but few parts sould've been replaced.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with them.

Overall Rating : 8
I used this bass on about 80-100 gigs a year in the past 2-3 years, and it never broke down. I've been playing for 8 years now and this is my second bass ever (my first was a very low end german bass - Musima DeLuxe). I bought it about 5 years ago when I didn't know anything about tone, but the price was sure well. Since now (22) I have the money to buy the bass I want I'll retire this one. I've been listening to the pros in Hungary and I know what tone I'd like. Yeah, right, Fender.
I won't sell this, cuz I love it and it means more to me than the money I'd get for it (my father will never understand that :)). I decided I'll have it made a fretless so it won't be useless after I get the new bass.
If it were stolen I wouldn't buy it again, it's realy rare in Hungary and it wouldn't be the same.

1980 Peavey T-40 made in USA. 4 strings, 20 frets, 34" scale two piece rock maple neck, with big a beefy headstock and giant tuners and a steel nut. Three piece swamp ash body with a carved top and black 3-ply pickguard on top of a natural finish. two giant humbuckers switchable to singles through tone knobs (pos 7-10 single coil, 1-6 humbucker) volume and tone knob for each pickup plus a pickup selector and phase switch. pu's are passive, but kick a$$ over most any active. this bass weighs a ton, but thats ok considering the GIANT tone this thing has. body looks like a stingray a little bit. this has a huge string-through body bridge (biggest i've ever seen). came with a pretty nice plush-lined PVC case with a giant storage compartment.

Sound : 10
I play almost every style, from metal to jazz, this bass suits them all. The phase switch gives it a very hollow sound, great for jazz. Awsome pop/slap sound in almost any tone setting. Metal sounds great with the humbuckers going. I cant find any tone i dont like on this bass.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
This bass is 21 years old and i just got it, so I have no clue as to if it was setup well from the factory, but the intonation is perfect.
Pu's will probobly never need adjusted, it sounds fine, i'm not gonna dick with 'em. The volume knobs crackle a little when you turn them at first, but you don't really notice it. also, the neck is slightly warped, but nothing major, just matter of preference (I prefer a perfectly flat neck). The manual i printed up says that the switches are MILITARY GRADE. this thing weighs a TON, and my stap keeps falling off.

Reliability/Durability : 9
i've only had it 2 days, but its lasted 21 years before i got it with only a few buckle scratches on the back and a couple tiny dings where somebody wasn't quite carefull enough (shame on them).

Customer Support : 10
I asked Peavey what year it was, based on the serial # , and got the response within 24 hours. these guys know what their doing. Screw Fender and Gibson, Peavey is the way to go.

Overall Rating : 10
I play through a crate BX-25 practice amp and it sounds awsome. If anybody stole this from me, I would hunt them down like a dog and... (well you don't wanna know the rest). I love how smooth the neck is and the giant pu's.

This bass was made in 1978 in the U.S.A.. 4 Strings, ash body, maple neck, huge dials and hardware. Very heavy. So heavy that the strap cuts into my shoulder. The tone controls are the usual, but I can go from a single coil pickup pattern to a humbicker pickup pattern with the turn of one of the dials.

Sound : 8
Big and fat sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
Thicker nech so harder to play. No easy like a Fender P-bass. It seems to be made well.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Durable, yes! Heavy duty hardware.

Excellent

I found this guitar is the local scuzzy pawnshop. In this pawnshop, there was dust everywhere, the workers looked like they just got out of jail, and mostly everything there was filthy, scummy, shitty, and like a giant slumhole. The only good thing they had was the T-40. I hate pawnshops because they make money on peoples misery and pain. 99% of the pawnshops are owned by scumbags and slimeballs who'd sell their own grandmother for 20 bucks. Darky's Pawnshop in Kelowna, B.C. Canada is super scummy and slimmy just like that horrible shit moving company "Two Small Men with Big Hearts". Both are the scum and drudge of society. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to deal with the scum of the earth, to get gear you want. They wanted $400 for it, but I knew it had been sitting there for a year, so I good it for $300. Not a great deal, but a good deal.

I'm glad I bought it.

Made in good ole USA 1979 has maple two piece neck and maple fretboard has volume and tone for eack pickup a three way pickup switch and an in phase out of phase switch. Natural finish over ash body.Electronics are passive but blows away any active bass I've played. The body style is like a Gibson grabber crossed with a Stingray. The two pickups are huge Peavey humbuckers the tuners look like the heavey old Schallers the bridge is the best one I've ever seen it has huge very adjustable saddles and the strings go through the body. The neck width is like a mid 70's P bass.Has the cool old peavy plastic molded case.

Sound : 9
This bass rocks I play professionally and this one sounds good with any style Country Rock Alternative Oldies Blues. The bass is fully shielded so no noisy hum.I always bring a much lighter Fender Jazz bass to my gigs for when the weight starts to get to me around the third set. This bass works better live than in the studio you have to use very light picking technique in the studio

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This bass was pretty much flawless from Peavey the only real knock is the weight these T series bassses were made to last forever

Reliability/Durability : 10
This bass works and performs well in all playing situations.Hardware is indestructable. The finish is not too fancy but protects the wood just fine.I always use strap locks so I can't rate the strap buttons but American Peavey always feature premium hardware. This bass is 100% dependable and Peavey should reissue it I would pay $1000 dollars for a new one.I have used this bass without a backup many times but I would recommend bringing a lighter one in case you get fatigued from the weight

Customer Support : 9
I have many Peavy products and these people are the best to deal with Nate Copeland in particular has always been great!I recently wore out a switch on my T-40 and found out you can't get them from Peavey anymore but Nate told me where to get one and they had it at a reasonable price.I have never sent anything to Peavey for repair because i am a repairman so I can't comment on that

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 27 years if my T-40 ever gets stolen I would have to find another one nothing else has the versatility the punch or the balls this thing has.If Peavey had a way to make it lighter it would have been the greatest instrument ever made.Hartley Peavy is a true genius and deserves his place among guys like Leo Fender and Les Paul

Free manual. To hell with Fender and have to pay for manuals...

I've had one for the pat 10 years. It was amazing. I put the thing through hell and back -- It's f'n indestructable! About a year ago, the input started to go, and since I was actually giging a lot at the time, I thought it was time to upgrade. I bought a Fender Jazz V and hated it. It just bought another T-40 on eBay today. It is one of the greatest damn things ever made. My advice: Buy 'em up. They're cheap right now, but they're likely to end up a classic. I now have two of them...

Features : 8
-Late 70's, early 80's USA made
-22 frets, 4 string
-2 passive pickups, each usable as single or humbucking
-4 volume controls, 2 tone controls. The tone controls control tone (1-8 settings) or humbuck/single coil (9-10). Pickups selected with three way switch (bridge/both/neck). Additional switch controls phase relationship between the coils.
- can adjust string height individually, as well as scale length
-34" scale maple neck

string spacing seems wide compared to other basses I've tried in stores, but it suites me
-strings through body
-finish - natural, but I seen black, too.
originally included molded plastic case

Sound : 8
- can get a variety of sounds from this, but most have lots of mids.
- using this with Carvin PB200 15 and Zoom BFX-708 effect unit. (Jacop patch with bridge pickup gives a good approximation to a fretless sound)
- mostly play in church setting
- reversed phase setting sounds thin

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
- action easy to set
- finish seems to be good

Reliability/Durability : 7
- I got this used at a pawn shop, and apart from a few belt buckle gouges (which don't show at a distance due to the natural finish), it could almost look new. Not bad for a 15+ yo bass.
- harware is very sturdy -- not worried about anything breaking

Customer Support : 10
-Asked for manual from Peavey and it was mailed free of charge
-1 yr warranty, but expired long ago

Overall Rating : 8
- this is my one and only bass, so I cannot compare with others very well
- much heavier than most basses, and it is neck heavy -- have to keep arm resting on the bass to keep the neck from rotating down (or need to get a better strap!)
