Made in USA. 20 frets, bolt on maple neck and fretboard, solid body, 2 pickups, single vokume and tone controls for both pickups(I found this quite odd for a Rick bass, since most have individual controls for each pickup), 3 way selector switch, gold hardware, dual truss rods, comes standard with round wound strings. The bridge is similar to the ones they fit on the 4004 series, with Schaller tuners. This bass was manufactured somewhere between 1993-1997. I paid a little over $600 for it, and have never seen one like it(especially since the ones I've seen have rosewood fretboards and individual controls for each pickup).

Sound : 8
Sounds like a Rick! Has the classic ringing 4001 tone for almost half the price. Actually, the overall sound I feel is a little more versatile than the older 4001 sound, especially the bridge pickup. I've even been able to get that "Jaco" J-bass sound with this bass!(I had an old 4001, and the neck pickup just sounded weak when soloed, which I've heard is a common problem among older Rick basses). The pickups are small but faily loud. The neck pick up soloed has a very gritty, growly sound. I rarely use the neck pickup by itself, though. It has a nice low end, and a bit more top due to the maple fretboard(as if a Rick could get any brighter!) This bass sounds really good with a pick. It's not really good for blues, but sounds great for rock and even jazz(I used it in a big band setting with a GK head and Ampeg cabinet and it sounded awsome!) I run mine through an Ampeg SVP-Pro preamp and 1X15 B-2 combo. Always get compliments on the sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Set up was great, though if you change the strings it will need to be setup again(Rick string gauges are odd; I restrung mine with standard gauge Rotosounds, and have noticed the action is a little high since then). The pickups adjust on the back of the body with an allen wrench. I liked this feature and thought it to be quite unique, as are many features on any Rickenbacker instrument. The only flaw was one of the allen screws on the bridge was stripped on the E saddle, so the saddle would lower after a while of playing. this was easily fixed. Plays great!

Reliability/Durability : 9
Never had major problems with this bass. I've thrown it around onstage, beat it to hell and it still plays and sounds good! Since I play mostly rock, this is my main bass.

I've been playing for 12 years and have owned quite a few basses. I use this one and a Fender Jazz with flatwounds as my main basses. If it were stolen I would try to find another one, though I've never since seen one like it! Looks and sounds more modern than a 4000 series, which I have owned as well, but sold because I needed the cash at the time. I'd never sell this bass! It's addictive! I would buy another one if I saw one on the market, because you get Rick value for an affordable price; a poor man's Rick.
