i bought my yamaha standard5 (serial no ho13298 man.aug13 1991)new in 1993 and found the features to be comparable to the 72 fender precision i was using back then and has held up well under the australian variable climate and has served me well

Sound : 7
as i play in a classic rock cover band i find the tone variation to be more than adequate but at some venues the bridge pickup is unusable due to exessive hum can even be abit noisy with the switch in the middle position but i suppose you cant have everything

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10

I don't know what the date of birth is from my attitude standard 5 bass but I've bought it second hand in the year 1988 for 600 guilders (250 dollar). It was made in Taiwan and the serial nr is HN 29026. The bass has 5 strings (0.45 / 130 slowwound) and has 21 frets. The two passive yamaha pickups can be selected by a three way switch. It has a volume and a tone potmeter. Because I got it second hand I don't know what the materials of the body and neck are. I onley use the center position of the selector and create the sound that I want with my fingers. The bass doesn't have a lot of features but I don't use that anyway so a big 8 for my yamaha.

Sound : 9
I used this bass on a lot of different recordings from Rythm and blues, blues, rock, pop, country, jazz to latin amerikan music styles and he always sounds great. Just put it straight in to the mixer and on tape. Because I mostly use both pick ups I don't have problems with buzz or hum. The sound is rich with a lot of definition (from de bridge pick up)but it does not go as deep as my Fender bass. all and all it is a very usefull bass for stage and studio.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The day I bought my bass the frets where flattend by Rickers bass builder in the netherlands and they did a hell off a job. It's just like flying over the fretboard. The only problem I had was the G-string volume but after adjusting the pickups it was no longer a problem. The finish was not all that but I don't care.

Reliability/Durability : 8
I had to restore the tone heads but they are fine now. The head of the bass was a litlle torn but with a little bit of glue that wasn't a problem eighter. The strap buttons had indeed come lose but with a bit of glue and matches all is fixed and now the dont come lose anymore. I've never had a backup bass with me and never had the urge to.The neck only has to be adjusted when my brand of strings are sold out and I have to use other.

I am playing for 15 years now. I have two other basses besides this one. A Fender 5 string jazz bass and a catalist 4 string. I use EBS bass amp's. The best thing of the attitude is the neck. It is wide, thin, and has the perfect curve.

I bought my yamaha atitude standard used, back in 1998, but I think it was made in 1997 in Japan. This model is a 4 string (the other reviews are about the 5 string model, but they're preety much the same). It has 2 passive pickups with a 3 way switch, tone and volume knobs.I really don't know the pickup models but they really sound great! The neck is a bit large and it has a really long scale (compared with other basses I played with), what turns it into a difficult bass to adapt to, specially for someone like myself that has small hands for a bass player, but after you get the of it you forget all the others. My attitude is galaxy black and I got a silver case custom made for it.

Sound : 8
this bass has a perfect sound for playing rock and hezvy metal, but it doesn't deny a good sound for playing pop, swing, funk or reggae. It has a really good sound to play about anything. I use a Carlsbro B1-200 pro-series combo and it gives me great sounds in the amount you want. This combination (yamaha attitude standard/Carlsbro B1-200) is perfect, also because this particular combo has a 16" Celestion speaker specially designed for it, so you can imagine the crystal clear and warm or crunchy/growling sounds I can get out of the attitude. Other players I know get startled when they hear my bass playing. If you compare it's sound to other basses with more tradition and fame (Fender/Musicman/Tobias/Warwick,...) the attitude can equal them in sound quality.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
When we talk about quality, we must recognize the quality of any yamaha product. We're not talking about luxury finishments, but it's really damn good. My attitude had it's action preety high for my style, but after a few adjustments it's nice and low, just the way I like it.

Reliability/Durability : 10
this is the kind of bass that won't never let you down. I play live regularly using only this bass, with no backup and never had a problem.the hardware is great and the finish is everlasting, only the pickguard could be in a more resistant material because it shows all the little scratches. I've only neede to adjust the neck/truss rod once in all these years, when I changed the original strings (35-95) to stronger ones (45-105), but that's normal in any bass.

I've played with other basses, just to try them or when I go to other towns and leave my bass at home. I know pretty well the Aria Pro-II bass, that stands miles behind the attitude; I also own an Ibanez silverstar fretless from 1982 wich has a really antique sound, but still far from the attitude. I've also played with a Tobias Classic but I think it has a sound that is too clear, you can't get that crunchy/growling sound of the attitude. The only bass guitars that I really compare with the attitude is a semi acoustic Eco bass, from 1963, that belongs to my housemate and has a great bass sound, and the Musicman stingray, the has a fantastic punchy sound, when well drivin. But I really love my attitude. Combined with my Carlsbro B1-200 combo I can get any sound I want (due also to the many many possible sounds of this combo and the 16" Celestion speaker, it's really a studio amp with tons of power. If it was lost or stollen, I would try to replace it with one just like it.

I picked up this hefty bastard at Black Market Guitars in S.F. for $500. The thing was brand new and sounded like a boutique bass from the very first note. Even though the neck was as wide as a canoe paddle, it was easy to get around, the action was good, and most importantly, the sound was full, crisp and flexible. The body is alder, painted red/pink depending on how the light hits it.

Sound : 9
The P/J setup is flexible; the pickups are quite good. Bridge pickup is noisy when soloed. The P pickup puts out a very good fender type sound: solid and crisp. I used this bass onstage for two years and it filled in the bottom end like a good bass should. When the strings are played aggressively, the bass growls and distorts musically. Eventually, I got he fretless bug and decided to convert it, looking for the ultimate B string growl. After he conversion I was satisfiedd with the results and now have a great fretless bass: a keeper

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I played a couple of other Attitude 5's over the years, but found them to lack the magic of the pink one I have. Good wood, I guess.
The bass is solid as a rock and the finish is tough as nails.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Very reliable.

I replaced the 3 position switch with a blender knob for more tonal flexibility. This should be a standard feature on all two pickup basses!

Bought mine used and I don't have any documentation, so I don't know where it was made, with what materials etc. although fingerboard appears to be rosewood. It's got a bolt-on neck. It's got 21 frets, 5 strings, 2 pickups - 1 split and one straight. It's passive with 3-way pickup selector, 1 volume pot & 1 tone pot. It's a substantial bass, Fender P-style body with a very wide neck.

Sound : 9
Sound is very versatile and clear. I play mostly in the studio these days, mostly on rock but also soul & pop. I record straight into the desk on flat eq and add compression afterwards with a plugin. It sounds very clear & pumps along nicely on the rock. I generally use it on the middle position, which gives both depth and clarity, but there are usable sounds on both single pickups e.g. nice bassy reggae sound on the neck p.u. (watch the speakers though - I've nearly blown hired PA drivers before!) and nice soloing sounds on the bridge. Great on power ballads. Can get a bit noisy, which can be eliminated by changing position - probably to do with my setup (crmaped small room). Play live through an Ampeg SVT-200T - sounds fabulous - deep but clear. Works well both live and in studio. Used to have an active bass, which sounded awful when the battery started going, so passive is fine for me.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
Frets are quite worn now - I'll need to refret it soon but there is still very little buzz anywhere. It's always had one or two spots that are hard to get buzz-free, but it's very slight and doesn't come through the pickups. Action won't go very low but it still plays nicely.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've done a couple of hundred gigs with it, along with countless studio hours, and it's never let me down. I've dropped it many times without a problem. Finish is as good as new. Hardware still looks great and works fine. I've used it many times without a backup and wold again without hesitation even though it's over 10 years old now. . Never had a strap fall off. The neck is very solid and hardly moves at all year-round - I adjust the truss rod slightly twice a year.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had a problem with it.

I've been playing bass for nearly 30 years. I also have a Bass Collection 4-string fretless and a Washburn 4-string fretted. I have never regretted my impulse purchase of this bass - it's been my main workhorse for many years. If it were stolen I would replace it with a Warwick Thumb 5-string , purely because that is my dream bass. I love its reliable sound. Between it and the Ampeg I can get a good sound anywhere I play. There's nothing I hate about it. I compared it with other basses at the time and chose it mostly for its good clear sound and its extra-wide neck, which suited my clumsy slap style (okay - it wasn't that unfashionable back then!). A great reliable workhorse.

Korean-manufactured five string bass with a two octave, fairly wide fretboard. Two Yamaha passive pickups (1 split, 1 soapbar), 3-way pickup switch and single volume and tone controls. The scale and width of the neck make this an instrument for people with fairly big hands, but I find it very comfortable.

Sound : 8
This 5-string is based on Yamaha's Billy Sheehan signature model and I guess the sound is pretty much what you'd expect from that. The overall sound is quite "snappy" and growling. The basic tone is very good and the 3 different pickup permutations give a good variety (the neck being very bright and the bridge being much more full and bassy, which is quite strange, isn't it?). Me and a friend write our own stuff and record on a Yamaha digital four-track and this bass has worked very well for that purpose. I normally record either direct into the four-track, or using a Zoom506 unit as a preamp and this works very well. I also have an excellent little Crate 25W bass combo and the Yamaha sounds great through that (especially with the bridge pickup). I occasionally get a bit of pickup noise and I would like to have the option of a deeper bass tone now and again, but then again, this isn't an active bass, so I suppose you can't expect too much. I use it for wide variety of styles; hard rock, rock ballads, retro-pop and even some more jazzy-type stuff. The bass works pretty well for all of these styles, but I'd say that it's basically a rock instrument at heart.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
I bought the bass second hand, so the strings were very old and I had to replace them. The action is pretty good, although there is a bit of fret-buzz here and there on the neck. The finish is a really nice darkish blue with a slight sparkle behind it. It came with a white scratch-plate, which I didn't like much. I had a black one hand made for me and now it looks really good.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This bass seems to be extremely solid and there isn't a mark on the bodywork, even though I bought it used. My only quibble with it is that the bridge-end strap button isn't so great and the strap can pop off there occasionally (I've always managed to catch it so far!). I think you could trust this bass without a back-up, but if I had a second bass, I'd probably take it along anyway!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had any cause to contact them.

I mainly play guitar (Ibanez RGR570, '86 Kramer Baretta, Epiphone LP Std) and this is my 1st and only bass, as I only started playing about 8 months ago. I certainly don't regret buying it, since it is a good quality instrument and has served my requirement well so far. When I bought it, I compared it to several new Washburns, but the Yamaha had by far the best sound. If it were lost or stolen, I would probably get a natural-finish Ibanez SR-series bass, with active electronics.
