I have 3 of thease. The first ojne I got 15years ago and have played over 1000 gigs with it and have NEVER had a problem with it. I have owned other basses but always come back to my yamaha's.
For me no other bass will do!!!

Sound : 10
the first one I bought 15 years ago is dark green and the electronics were modified. it has a p/j set up with the passive tone knob turned into a volume for the "j" p/u. it has more of a modern bass tone
the other two I have (red and another green one) are totaly stock.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
all 3 of thease basses play excellent and unlike other basses I have they are all very consistant with each other.
the one I have had for 15 yrs has alot of were and tear to where the other two are in goo shape.

Reliability/Durability : 10
THE MOST RELIABLE BASS I HAVE EVER PLAYED. ALL 3 OF THEM

Mainly covered in last review; it's basically a P-Bass evolved with switchable active electronics. The neck is maple with two mahogany stripes complemented with alder body wings. Mine also has the deep emerald finish which can look almost black. The electronics are impecably designed: they're on a suspended circuit board and don't touch any surface, so noise is a nil point here. Japanese engineering at its best.

Oh yeah, this is what I've always wanted! Familiar yet exceptional. Passive mode gets a more refined classic P-Bass tone. It's very nuanced but slowly I realized how special it was. The mids aren't as overbearing and I'm amazed at the clarity and fullness. Easily dials in Andy Rourke's tone he had on Smiths' albums (he used the similarly great BB2000). Active mode? Even better! Using Peter Hook's settings (highs and bass boosted full, mids neutral) you get an amazing sound that has great dub like lows yet absolutely sings in the upper register. Use a decent chorus to nail that New Order sound. In other words, who needs a guitar when you got this as a lead instrument. Really though, it's as versatile as you'd need. It's just got really, really good straight ahead tone that's easily moldable.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
She was fairly worn when I got her, but it was just on the surface. Construction was flawless and will stand countless mistreatment. The finish had some chips from who knows what travels but nothing actaully went through to the wood. Now here's the real test: I got this thing in the mail and have yet to adjust ANYTHING after six months of playing how it came. Action was low and buzz free, intonation perfect. The neck on this is absolutely rediculous: the most comfortable I've ever played. In fact my playing improved instantly just because of how amzing this instrument settles.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Don't got a backup, short of this being stolen I won't need one. Like the other reviewer said, it's fairly heavy, but eh I've gotten used to it.

Haven't really dealt with Yamaha. My ebay seller was quite accomodating though.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing continually for 7 years now, am a total gear nut and have traded a lot. That being said, Hooky was absolutely right: there is no substitute for one of these. I admit part of the allure of grabbing this was that it's been used on every New Order album, but now I know why these are scarce to find: it's incredible. Short of maybe finding a Rickenbacker 4005 I can honestly say this is "the one". I can't believe I got it so reasonably, it's worth more to me than many $2000+ instruments I've tried. I'll leave the P-Basses to the Fender junkies, they just won't suit me.

1984 p/j-bass nade in Japan. It has 22 frets and four strings. It has a solid top and the neck and the body have been made of the same piece of wood. It has a one volume knob, one tone knob, a 3-band active eq, and a active/passive switch. Has one p-bass mic. Neck is made of rosewood and body is maple. It is a dark green colour. It has a j-bass style body. It has standard Yamaha tuners, which are very good and stiff.

This is an excellent rock-bass. I only play rock with it, but it's also on okay jazz-bass.I use it with a Behringer 1200 Ultrabass and it gives it a dark soung. The e-string is extremely "bassy". I think this bass is a bit better in studio than opn stage, because it's bloody heavy. I like the sound, but it has some fret buzz.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The bass was ready when I got it and there are now flaws in it. This bass lookes used because it is.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've used this bass for 18 years, and I haven't had to repair it even once. You can't really brake it. I've used this bass for the whole of my career without backup and I love this bass.

Didn't use any, bought used.

Overall Rating : 10
I've used this bass for 18 years and it's perfect. I love it. It's a shame they don't make thiss bass anymore.
