i bought my yamaha BB2000 brand new in december 1986 at guitar center in santa clara calif. it is a 4-string, neck thru body. after 22 years it is still my main squeeze! and i have not even ever had to replace anything. i've had many other second and third basses, but this is the one...the tone, the bite, the feel. i play classic-rock, jazz, pop, punk, metal, and death metal(tune my E to a low 30Hz B, then E, A &D). i've used the same ampeg svt 8-10 cab all these years also. email me at mrtallchorizo@aol.com

I bought this bass around '92 new at Sam Ash in Huntington, NY. I loved the feel of it right away. The electronics are good not great and it is a nice value for the money I paid. It's got a P-J pickup configuration but generally is pretty much of a "Plain Jane." Nothing fancy, just solid and good.

Sound : 10
This bass sounded good stock when I bought it but I have since replaced the original bridge with a Badass. You wouldn't believe the sustain it gets! It really sings in the upper registers and I haven't played anything less than a $2500 Pedulla Pentabuzz that I like as much. Take off two points for the stock version.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The setup was crap off the rack but when set up properly it feels and plays awesome. The only caveat is that it is sensitive to seasonal changes and the weather and requires adjustments 2-3 times a year.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This bass has done mostly studio duty and has not gone to many gigs, but it is reliable and trustworthy and I would consider it roadworthy. Can't speak to the strap buttons because I immediately put straplocks on it when I got it. The other hardware seems solid and dependable, and I've had no problems with it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with Yamaha regarding this bass, and that's a good thing.

Great value, good overall buy for a midrange instrument.

I bought this early to mid 80's new at guitar center. Standard P-J configuration passive electronics. 1 volume and 1 tone control plus a 3-way pick up selector. Thru body neck is for sure Maple and Walnut. The body wings are unknown, I heard maple or Basswood. Super solid bridge. My tuners still work fine after 20 years. I would only change the pick up controls to Jazz bass style (2 volume and 1 tone) That's an easy fix I never got around to doing.

Sound : 10
I have been through multiple basses before settling in on the BB2000. I was originally going to replace the pick ups with EMG active pick ups. I did that change on my BB200 and it sounded great, However the pick ups have such a natural clean sound to them I couldn't change them. This is one of the most versatile basses I have owned, Second only to my Music Man. I could go on forever about the sound. I can even duplicate a fretless sound, Honest I did it for a freind who was recording local commercials he couldn't believe the sound!!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Factory set up was OK, I easily tweaked it to my personal likes. The body style is like a Gibson Grabber only smaller. The finish is the best part. This Bass is beautiful, My Wife hates it!! The transparent orange sunburst and Neck thru give it a look of a much more expensive bass.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I have played this bass in the studio for gigs and at home for 20 years without a single problem. I did manage to put 1 nick in the laquer finish but it is undetectable. I even let my kid thrash this in his room for 2 years, Papa Roach could not damage it.

Haven't had to call for support. But after twenty years there is NO information on the Yamaha web page.

Overall Rating : 10
As I said previously, this bass has lasted the years and still sounds and plays great. I love the Sound, especially the P Pick up, such a woody tone. Great Pop/Slap sound with both pick ups. Useful tone Control. I will rewire the bass to add a Pick up blend control. that's it. Have I said great yet!!

It's from the early 80's i'm not sure which year. It's probably made in Japan. 21 frets, 4 strings. Volume, tone, 3-way pickup selector.
1 p-style pickup, 1 blade bridge pickup. Both are passive. The pickups are stock. I don't know the woods used in the construction
but it is a somewhat heavy bass. It's neck-thru, with a 5-piece neck.
the body shape recalls an alembic, or a gibson grabber. It's a flat
body. When I got the bass, a couple of the tuners were a bit worn out, so i replaced them with Schallers. It's a fat neck, and a long scale. A high quality rosewood neck, with pretty big frets.
The bridge is pretty standard, metal saddles, 2 screws each.
The finish is natural to expose the different woods in the neck!
I love the simplicity of the bass, and the construction is great.

Sound : 10
This bass has a warm, passive tone, it can be bright or dark with simple tone and pickup adjustments. I use it with 2 setups -
GK 400 - Boss compressor - 1 x 15 hartke cab w/ regular speaker
or Fender BXR 400 head with BXR biamp cabinet.
This bass seems like it can get any sound you can expect out of a
passive bass. I play with a pick or my fingers, muted and bright,
it all comes out great. there's nothing i don't like about the sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I got this bass well - used, so i had to get it set up. it got
a fret job and a rod adjustment. Any flaw in the finish was from
hard use before i owned it, or adverse weather conditions.
The action is just great after i had it adjusted. I don't play
a neck thru bass for nothing. It's smooth and fast.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This bass is really worthy. I had to fix the strap pegs, but
now it seems like it wouldn't break. the hardware isn't
going to break either. I think the finish is fine, besides the
old chips in it. It won't wear off. The neck seems really stable,
any small variance can be fixed at the bridge instead.
It is my primary gigging bass and I don't feel i need a backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I don't think Yamaha would support a 20-year old used bass

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing music all my life and am a good multiinstrumentalist. Also,
I'm an experienced bassist who felt he needed something better than the weird Fender HM4 (they're weird). I like passive stuff though
and this is one of the best. Too bad Fender doesn't make a neck-thru
because there's a difference. The body looks nice and rock/roll unlike a lot of fancy neck-thru designs. I'd compare the neck to a Music Man i guess, it's pretty wide, but that seems to give a wide open sound, great for chords and high playing too. Only thing is I wish I had found it in better condition because i had to put some work into fixing the tuners and the strap pegs. this will be my bass for quite a while.

Strait forward. I Vol, 1 Tone, 3 way togle, 1 P and 1 J pick up. Maple neck thru body with maple body, ebony fretboard with oval pearl inlays. Beautiful sunburst finish that is tough as nails. This was made in Japan in the early 80's. This is the bass that has been played by Paul McCartney, the guy from Men at Work (Ha ha!!) The guy in No Doubt, Michael Anthony, and lots of others...

Sound : 10
Awesome!!!!!!The pickups are very warm and full. I origionally was to replace them with EMGs or Bartolinis when I first got it cause all my other basses had them, but I fell in love with the sound of these passive factory standards. This thing is punchy and sustains. This is what I desire in my bases. This muthafucker delivers.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Pissa. This thing is built like a tank yet has great finess. It can do heavy metal and delicate jazz. This is my favorite bass!!!

Reliability/Durability : 10
I have played this live, studio and constantly in rehearsal spaces. It continues to impress people with it's looks and sound. The finish has nary a scratch. Whatever Yamaha uses for a clear coat it it super strong. The hard ware is top notch. It has funky etching is on the bridge. The tuners a true. I have gigged and recorded with only this bass and it has never let me down.

Customer Support : 10
I have never contacted Yamaha about this bass but I did about a guitar amp I have (DG100) and they were excellent.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 20 years. My other basses include a Fodera, Spector, 2 Fender Jazz Basses, a Fender P Bass, Peavey and an old Steinberger. I would gladly give all of these up, with the exception of the Fodera, for the Yamaha. It is that good!!!! If it got stollen I would speak with Tony Soprano, Michael Corleone and John Gotti and get it back.
