Sound : 8
I play manyt styles mainly hard rock and metal, it does fine for rock and metal great for grabbing fake harmonics. Not so good for slap or tapping as of yet I just got it , I am not used to five strings yet. No noise, Great sound a little low biut I htink it needs a new battery. I like the bass alot , I hate the toggle switched they make it llook so cheap.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Grat action out of the box, pickups seemed fine.
I think everythign is fine.

Reliability/Durability : 8
I htink htis bass will kill live as soon as I get used to the five string thing., Finish seems good strap buttons, have a felt washer under them I think they are cool. I would always use a back up just because, anythign can happen,

Customer Support : 6
I have called the company they seem very freindly, I would say good service.

Overall Rating : 10

2004 model, Made in Taiwan. Five strings, 35" scale, 24 frets. The active electronics consist of two Yamaha-branded soapbar-style pickups, one volume control, one tone control, pickup selector, and a midrage boost switch. Solid alder body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Satin "flat silver" body finish, satin finsh on black-painted neck. Hardware includes a monorail-style bridge, Gotoh GB-7 tuners. Cable and 9-volt battery included.

Sound : 8
Bright, "modern" sound due to the active electronics and extended scale length. Tone control rolled back reduces some of the high-end, but not enough for dub territory. Mid-boost switch brings out a nice presence in band situations. A pickup selector is unusual for basses, but I personally rarely stray from 50/50 balance, so it doesn't affect me much.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Extremely well set-up upon arrival (UPS Ground shipped). Only minor tweaking needed. No finish, electronic, or hardware flaws.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This bass is very well constructed, and I can't imagine having any problems under normal playing conditions. The satin body finish might be less durable depending on your personal playing style. Solid strap buttons, but I replace the stock with Dunlop Strap-Loks as a general rule. I never gig without a backup, but this bass appears to be very dependable.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Lifetime limited warranty (one year parts and labor on hardware, electronics, finish - limited lifetime on neck and body). No services needed thusfar.

Overall Rating : 10
14 years experience playing bass. Other gear includes Fender Jazz Plus V, Ibanez SR-1206, Ibanez SR-800 fretless, Digitech Bass Whammy, Akai Deep Impact, Peavey Amplification.

I would certainly search for a replacement if stolen/lost - an amazing vaule for the money. Positives include the hardware and monorail bridge, pickups and electronics, and extended scale length.

A fretless option would be a great option. I'm considering purchasing a second one to be defretted.

Features : 9
wow, where to begin. lets see, it's nicely balanced and fairly light compared to other bases of it's size, but with remarkable sustain. the shape is also comfortable to play, all the high frets are accessible. the tuners are good, and the guitar has just an overall great look. it's made in taiwan, satin finish, active pickups.

Sound : 9
oh dear. the sound is so good, it makes me horny. i can get a really clear punchy sound out of it or a nice smooth groove kinda sound and everything in between. this bass is virtually noiseless, there is no hum or buzz from the pickups. i'm using it for recording in my project studio and i'm sending it direct into my interface through a mx12/4 mixer also by yamaha. i havent tried this bass live yet (i'm not really a live bassist, i just use bass to write) but in my recordings, i am extremely satisfied. i can get whatever sounds i want out of this bass and for the price i think there is nothing better.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
i dont know how well the bass was set up in the factory because i bought this used, but the action was fine when i got it... nice and low without buzz. there were also a few scratches and dents, but from the person who used it before me, not the factory. the color is a very nice kind of aquatic blue satin and the back of the neck and head is black, black hardware. great overall look.

Reliability/Durability : 8
as i earlier stated, i'm not a live bassist, i've used this strictlyfor recording but i am a live guitarist so i know what it's like to be screwed by your instrument during an important gig and i would feel pretty comfortable bringing this bass to a gig without a backup. the hardware seems like it will last. i doubt the finish is going to wear off anytime soon and the strap buttons seem solid. i don't think a strap lock would be completely necessary unless i was lynz from mindless self indulgence. it does seem quite dependable.

Customer Support : No Opinion
i own quite a few yamaha products and i never once had to deal with the customer support. i think that says a lot about the company.

Overall Rating : 9
when i was choosing which bass to buy, i knew i needed a 5 string and i prefered active pickups, but was willing to give most basses a shot. i ended up narrowing it down to three choices. 1)a schecter stiletto 5 string in black 2)an ltd b-105 3)the yamaha rbx775 (this one) and believe me, all three weren't bad, but when it came down to playing them, the stiletto wasn't comfortable to my hand and the ltd was a considerable amount more expensive than this which pretty much the same features, feel and sound quality. i would definatly recommend this bass to anyone.

This 5-string is certainly well-made and it has got a good punchy and clean sound - The rosewood fingerboard is beautiful and easily accessible for fast, progressive/fusion fingerplay since strings are narrow-spaced (on the other hand, slapping is quite difficult but i don't care that much ^_^).

Now electronics, active electronics.

DAMN, THEY SUCK!! Volume and Tone switch are noisy, the boost control is... useless! And that pickup selector switch doesn't make that difference (now by now I've experienced problems with jack inputs too.. the bridge pickup sounds dead). Now I'm thinking about changing all electronics to get *other* sounds out of it.

Sound : 7
Well, it has great sound for its price; a sharp and aggressive "nosy" but still rich and massive feel; on the other hand it has certainly NOT a warm and emotional sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 5
This is a beautiful bass, well-built and without (...visible...) flaws. Just a little complaint about straps... sometimes the belt (or whatever) just slips off while I play.

Electronics SUCK.
Switches and controls seem sometimes to fall off the bass.

About looks... It's *cool* but still a bit... hmm... spaceship-looking. It's NOT as graceful as a StingRay5 or a Fender...

I like how this bass fits comfortable and its neck. In many reviews they said that the neck was painful to handle, and this is true, but once you've fit to it you can play very, very smoothly. Sometimes when I get my hands on 4strings (or better 5strings) I think I've made a good choice taking this bass, as kind of "practice-oriented" instrument (dunno if that's worth buying it). High tones are very easy to play.

The satin finish is resistant, but shows a lots of wear-marks on summers...

Reliability/Durability : 6
Uhm... the bass is sturdily built and it has taken many, many shocks since I've bought it about 2 years ago and it hasn't taken any damage (maybe because electronics are as good as broken, and wood is wood).
It's quite light, too.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never dealt with Yamaha... I think that's not with it.

Overall Rating : 5
Yamaha is like Microsoft or McDonald's.
Big names, series made and flawful products.

This bass was made in 2002, not sure what country it was made in.
24 frets, 5 strings. Electronics include volume, tone, pickup selectors, and a "bass boost" 2 soapbar pickups, made by Yamaha
The electronics are active, the body is made out of alder, the neck is rosewood? - I think. "Flat black" finish. Looks nice. The neck is larger than usual, and because of the 35" scale, the frets are larger as well. I personally prefer the electronics to be kept simple, so I was more than happy with the setup on this bass.

Sound : 10
I find the bass to very versatile. I've only been back playing the bass for less than a month, however it has handled anything I've tried to play very well. The bass is not noisy at all - as another reviewer mentioned, you often have to play a string to realise that it is actually turned on. It definately has an "active" sound about it, but it also sounds quite dark, which I prefer. The bass also works well for slapping, I find the string spacing to be perfect.
I haven't tried to play this bass in a live situation, however I feel confident that it could handle a live environment without any problems. I have no dislikes whatsoever with the sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I found that the bass played very well right away - considering it had been sitting in the guitar shop for a while, and then an additonal 2 months after that whilst i was paying it off. I have not experienced any flaws in the bass - it's very solid.

Reliability/Durability : 9
I think this bass will withstand just about anything - to be quite honest. The hardware all seems to be good quality. One of the things that has annoyed me a little about this bass is that the finish picks up the sratches very easily. However, because I haven't picked up a guitar/bass in so long until i got this, I might not really know what I'm on about. I know i can depend on this bass, and I would use it in a gig without backup.

I played bass for almost 2 years, then my current bass at the time was stolen. After a year and a half, I purchased this bass, after doing a lot of research. I strongly feel that Yamaha are a solid company - I had played their RBX 760/765 basses, and thought they were excellent for the price, however I was looking for something a step up. Then after checking out the yamaha site, I noticed this bass was just released (2002).

The place I brought it from was just about the only place in Brisbane that had one. I put in on layby pretty much as soon as it came in. I paid $1550 (the retail is $1600 Australian dollars) which also included a hardshell case, and a 15 Watt bass amp. So I got a fairly good deal! I really do like this bass - it's exactly what I wanted, and I knew that this was the bass for me before I had even played it.
I don't hate anything about it, and my favourite thing about it is the responsive, dark tone.

Before buying this, I went through several other basses that I wanted. Thankfully I got over all of them. Originally, I wanted an Ibanez EDB905, then an ESP b-305, then a Cort Artisan A-5, until I finally found this bass. I have absolutely no regrets, and feel that I got the best bass possible for the price I paid - and my bass teacher agrees. He's told me that he can't believe how good it is for only $1280 (when you take away the amp/hard case) and said that he will recommend it to all of his students if they are ever looking for a new bass.

Features : 9
-Made 2003 in Japan
-24 frets 5 strings
-Volume control/ tone control/ 3 way pick up selector/ active-passive switch control
-2 Yamaha hambucker pick ups
-Both active and passive
-Metalic Silver finish
-Modern slick style with bottom horn looking down

Sound : 10
-Perfect for hard core music, sustaining every note beautifully with hammer pounding clear crisp sound
-Marshall b150 amp / Zoom 3000b effects pedal
-No noise at all, actually i'd say this is it's best feature, because this bass doesn't make ANY NOISE AT ALL, sometimes I even have to play a string to check if the volume is up when not playing
-Very flexible and varied sound, with many different configurations available for the controls suiting the needs of i'd say almost every bass player
-Haven't used on studio yet, probably works very nice because all features, and it absolutely rocks on stage, holding the tunning for hours and hours even when played tuff
-No dislikes to this moment...

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
-Perfectly set from factory, I only raised the pick ups a bit...
-No flaws on this yama, this guys may mass produce this instruments but they are done perfectly, with a lot of attention to detail. This is actually my 3rd yamaha (rbx360 and rbx775 before this one) and I have to say that this bass rocks. Not only it sounds amazing, but it's also one of the best looking bass guitars I've ever seen. I also have a Ibanez sr485 that i can't get to sound like this yamaha...

Reliability/Durability : 10
-I've played like 10 gigs now since I own this bass and has done the job with no complaints
-Hardware and finish will most likely last, my other 2 yamahas resisted years of carrying around and tons of gigs, and they still look like new (i do pamper my bass guitars a lot and clean the every day I have to admit, and thay all sleep and are carried around in ritter bags wich i love)
-Strap buttons...big deffect unfortunately, top horn strap button keeps falling off when i race the neck a little

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never had to ask them for support so I have no idea to be honest...

Overall Rating : No Opinion
-I have been playing for 7 years, I also own a ibanez sr485, a oscar schmidt n100 electro acoustic, a rbx360 and a rbx765 from yamaha
-I just like this bass a lot; it has a good combination of price, sound and looks.
-I have compared it mainly to my other basses, and definitively outperforms them.
-Best thing is it's sound and it's perfectly reduced noise, but as I said the strap buttons suck

Purchesed in 2003. Number 7 in my collection. My 2nd 5-str bass.
24 frets, metallic blue, pickup selector and active passive switches.
2 fat humbuckers. Rosewood neck. Solid bridge and tuning keys. Real quality here folks.

I use this instrument is used in a studio. It's tonal range must be great as it has a lot of musical ground to cover. Real quiet. Strong and punchy bass. Get's real funky fast. Allows player to find the sound to fit his or her style. Real flexable.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Had to lower action to fit my taste and raise the pick-ups but no major alterations needed. Cool finish. No fret burrs.

Good solid bass. A great addition for any bassist. A great med cost

Playing since 1976. Own Fender, Ken Smith, Ibanez, Musicman and now Yamaha. This bass holds it's own. Has it's own generic tone that allows the player to carve their own tone. Very important in a bass.
Great tonal response for a bass in this price range. Great job Yamaha !!!

Made 2002 Taiwan I believe. 24 frets, 5 strings. There are volume and tone controls, a three way pickup selector, and a active bass boost to power you up for solos etc. Two Humbuckers I believe, though I could be wrong. Definitely two bigguns... duno that much about bass pickups. It's active, made of.... wood.... can't remember which though. Rosewood fingerboard though. The finish is "flat silver" and is lovely. The same all the way over, very smooth, doesn't get finger prints on it. The body is double cutaway, very modern. It has 5 seperate saddles for the bridge (quite like mono-rail bridges from ibanez... not sure if this is a general term). Non locking tuners, Yamaha I assume. It's 33" scale I seem to remember. The strings are wide enough to happily slap away on, which was a criticism of the Ibanez EDC705 which I was going to get originally. They're close enough in to get a decent amount of natural speed, doesn't seem to impede me at all, the slightly fatter than a 4 string neck. One cable included, plus the correctly sized allen keys. 8 due to the versatile controls on the bass (compared to a precision which i'm used to)

Sound : 10
I play in church primarily, though I am also in a production of Cabaret, and use it in my rock band. I use a variety of amps, all borrowed, two of which are actually guitar amps (I keep the volume low on the guitar) and the other of which is a Peavey Basic 112. So I haven't really experienced the full potential of this bass, but it can get punchy, or clear and melodic, just between the different pickups, and different playing styles. It's pretty responsive so it'll highlight your mistakes (if any) but also highlight your expression (if any). Works great for stage, can't say about studio. Everything I personally want.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Action was fine (to my taste) straight out of the factory box. Really feels solid as a bass which is good. Yamaha instruments have always seemed solid to me, although this is my first (and almost certainly not last purchase). Pickups were perfect.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Very solid as I've already said, hardware seems unbreakable. Finishs is solid. Absolutely no problems here. I would "gig" w/o backup since it is an excellent bass, and also the only one i have. Bass hasn't fallen off it's strap yet, no reason to suspect it should- fits well.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Can't say anything, no experience as of yet.

Overall Rating : 9
Been playing other people's basses for about 2/3 years, first bass of my own, no amp yet. Also have an Ibanez JS100 guitar, Fender 2001 Twin amp, and more. I wish I'd asked what the controls do before I bought this bass, would have saved me some time. If I could go back in time, I dunno whether I would have gone for this or the EDC 705. I'd love to play the Ibanez to find out, but due to stock/ordering problems I couldn't get that so I went for this. But I am thoroughly happy with this guitar, and don't have a problem there at all. I love the feel of it, the look, the sound, it just fits me really :) It would be great if it had a three band EQ kinda thing going for it, that'd be the only addition i'd ask for. Top dog for the money :)

Do e-mail if you have questions.
