I purchased the bass brand new in 2007, 24 frets, quilted maple top on an alder body, natural finish. Two soapbar pickups, Master volume, pan pot and 3 band controls. 35" scale neck. 9 volt active .

I play gospel and funk. Through ampeg B2r head and SWR Triad or 410 HLF Cabs. It can be noisy if you solo either pickup other wise it's pretty quiet. It has a versatile sound I can get it to a nice low warm sound a bright hi-fi sound and everything in between. I used it in the studio but I prefer it on stage because of some noise you may get.

The original setup was decent but this was a display bass at GC with dead strings. I told them them if they would change the strings so I can hear it properly I would buy it they did it and I bought it. The strings were originally too high before they change them. No problems with the picks. No flaws that I was aware of.

I used to use this bass live all the time but I have stopped because the jack drops the cord easily, even if I wrap it around my strap. The finish holds up well, all the rest of the hardware works fine adjusted the truss rod only once with the first setup and I always bring a backup.

I have played the bass for 13 years and the drums for 28 years and I am 30 years old. I f it were stolen I would replace it with the Yamaha TRB5pII. This is a fun bass to play great sound and I get compliments on its appearance, I dislike the way the cord drops since the list price is around $1,200 that shouldn't happen but I didn't pay that and I will get that fixed. I liked it better than the peavey grind I used to own and it was a good compliment to my Brawley and Ibanez BTB basses.

Exacgt details unknown as I bought it used. This bass has all top quality hardware, tuners, etc.... Tuners extremely easy to adjust and tune with - just the right amount of turn ratio. Recessed input jack and active electronics (9V) with battery compartment. Rock solid 24 fret, rosewood, bolt on neck 6 screws) and no dead spots on the neck. Large pickups (2) - neck and bridge. Just the style I prefer as I mount the pickups high and draw through the strings (Billy Sheehan trick).
This bass has a 35" neck that makes the low B sustain like crazy and let's you adjust the action lower than a 34" (or so it seems). Pretty wide neck (3" at the 24th fret). I like the farther string spacing as it is easier to swith to slap bass midstream (my primary style is fingers). String spacing about 150mm at the 24th fret.
One of my favroites - overall a very sweet bass!

I absolutley love the way this bass sounds. Very versatile and between the active electronics and my amp - no complaints. You can make it growl of sing very sweetly! I use several different pre-amps (live/ BBE BMax - Line 6 Bass Pod Pro XT Rack Mount / in studio). No specifc rack mont compressor decided on yet! Use an Ampeg B2RE head with Ampeg BSE410HLF cabinet. Great studio bass too!
Only complaint is the cutaway could be a bit deeper ont he bottom for easier access to the 23-24th frets. But still a GREAT bass!

Bought it used and always set my basses up myself so no way to judge this one. I could not find any flaws with the bass and is seems rock solid all the way around. It could have had a more attractive finish (quilted black?) but I bought it for how it played and sounded, not how it looked. Fast action and easy to fret. Love the big fretboard and fast action!
Only rated it a 9 as the finish (color / pattern) could be better.

I have been playing professionally for over 30 years and looked for a long time before adding another bass. Bought a 5 string about 5 years ago and realized that I wanted a bass with string spacing simular too a 4 string. Plus I needed a back up. Well guess what? This is my main axe now! Not sure what these ran new but this bass outshines a lot of basses I played that cost a LOT more money!
I play a varitety of music and use this for live and recording. Curently using D'Addario DR High Beams and love the sound. I prefer a 130 gauge B string - better sustain than smaller gauges.
I woudl replace this one in a hurry if somethig happened to it. Can't say that about many of hte other basses I have had over the years. A top end bass in a very affordable price range!

I bought this bass new/demo/floor model in February of 2008. I would have to assume it was made in either 2006 or 2007 in Korea. It is a 35" scale 5 string fretted bass with active electronics. The body appears to be a laminate "sandwich" of 3 different woods. The finish is transparent dark red and is absolutely stunning. The fingerboard is a beatiful slab of rosewood with oval shaped mother-of-pearl position marker inlays. The Yamaha name is inlaid at the top of the headstock in abalone. The hardware isn't exactly black - it's like a shiny dark gray - very classy and it goes great with the dark red finish. All electronics, pickups, tuners, hardware, etc. are top-quality Yamaha items. The on-board 9v preamp has controls for volume, pickup balance, treble, mid, and bass. Very simple and effective. Contrary to other reviews, I have not found the preamp to be noisy.

I couldn't be happier with the sound and feel of this instrument. I am currently playing in 2 bands, a 5pcs blues band and a 3pc jam band. The variety of sounds I can get is incredible and I'm totally satisfied. My amp is a David Eden WT-600 through a Hartke 410. I can make it growl, bark, burp, sing through its nose, etc. I have noticed that the B-string sounds tighter and more focused with the 35" scale length. I have not recorded with it yet but I'm sure it would do a terrific job.

When I rec'd this bass in the mail, all I had to do was tune 2 strings just a few cents and it was in - and I mean IN. The action was perfect, the intonation was perfect, it was just an expert set-up. I'm very picky about set-up - I do all my own work, most of my friend's guitars and basses, and I used to be the "set-up guru" for the local guitar store - so I do know a quality job when I see it. The manufacture quality of the guitar is very high. Hardware is rock-solid, neck/body joint is solid and tight, frets are nicely finished. Absolute top rating for this category.

I have and will depend on this bass to not let me down at a show. However, I will always have a backup. My backups are an older Ibanez 5 string, SGR885 (I think), and an American Fender Precision 4 string. Each of these basses are unique and have qualities I both like and dislike. Right now, the one that I would want to last forever would be the Yamaha. It has the least objectionable qualities and the most desirable. It is definitely my "go to" bass regardless of circumstance. It sure seems to be rock solid and dependable...

OK, here's where you find out if I know what I'm talking about... I got my 1st bass, a Gibson EB-3, in 1972. I have played either full or part-time professionally since 1977. Among other "brushes with greatness" I was bassist for a band that had a song hit #1 on the CCM top 40. I've owned/played/had access to some of the finest bass guitars made. I'm at a point in my life where there's no way I can justify more than $2,000 for a bass. I shopped for a long time... in all price ranges. I'm fortunate to be w/in 50 miles of 2 of the largest mail-order guitar retailers in the world - so I could try everything. My finalists were Ibanez elite series, Lakland Darryl Jones, and this Yamaha TRB1005. The Yamaha was $500 cheaper than the other two and it was simply a superior instrument. I highly recommend this guitar to anyone who plays a variety of types of music and plays fingerstyle. The strings are too widely spaced to be good for a pick.

Yamaha TRB1005, Korean made, 24 frets, 5 strings, two active soapbar pickups, controls - volume, pickup blender, 3 band EQ, nice quilt maple top over alder body
Sound

It has a thick sound, very hot. Like a couple of other posters, I noticed a strong hiss when EQ is cranked, or pickup selection is all one way or another. The EQ allows for quite a bit of tonal variety, but the hiss limits this to moderate changes, as the extremes are burdened by the extra noise. I have a hard time getting enough attack out of this bass, it is a bit muddy.

Action was good from the factory, I ended up having it lowered a bit. Fit and finish are awesome, which is the norm for Yamaha. The natural finish over the quilted top is gorgeous.

I think the long term reliability of this bass will be good. I have had mine for over a year with no problems in regards to the durability of hardware and such. If you don't have a backup, you definately want to always have some spare batteries available.

Overall this bass is pretty good, but I am selling mine. I do a lot of playing with an in ear monitor system, and the extra noise from the pickups drives me crazy. I love the feel of the bass in my hands, it balances well, is pretty light for a five string, and has a great feeling neck. But I am dissapointed that the electronics prevent me from using the full tonal spectrum this bass should have.
