Bare Knuckle Pickups PG Blues Humbuckers

Hand made pickups from the UK. The neck pickup is wound in the reverse direction from the bridge which will give you an out of phase sound in the middle pickup to emulate Peter Green's famous gaff. The pups use alnico 2 magnets and have an impedance rating of 7.2k neck and 7.7k bridge. I got mine with relic nickel covers which are the best I have seen, extremely authentic. The pups came with a set of strings and a great pick, very nice touch!

I use a Scott Schroeder (check him out - great custom built Fenders from Fullerton) Telecaster relic which came with Fender humbuckers. I changed them to Manlius Landmark PAF's which were okay but not outstanding. I could have lived with them but took the plunge into Bare Knuckle land. The price is high but it is higher if you buy one set and then buy another set...um like I did. Should have bitten the bullet straight off and saved myself a bit of dosh.

I play through a Fender Blues Junior Tweed with NOS RCA preamp and Telefunken power valves. I set the amp fairly quiet for home use with the volume on 3 for a touch of preamp overdrive. The progression from stock Fender pups to Manlius Landmark's to Bare Knuckle PG Blues has been very rewarding. The Fenders were okay, the Manlius better but overall not the improvement in sound I had hoped for, and the BK PG's perfect. There's a real "spank" to their sound when strummed hard, yet when strummed softly they are smooth as silk. They are bright yet not brash, smooth yet still cut and they have no harshness on the upper strings. They are easily the most dynamic pups I've used (including Fralin's) with the progression from clean to dirt easily achieved with the touch of your fingers. There's no scooped midrange here, there's simply great mids where you can dig in for some great blues sounds. Chords sound great with excellent string separation and open chords are clear and articulate. I didn't buy these pickups for the middle out of phase position, and I have to say it doesn't sound great for home levels set to clean. Add a touch of gain and wind it up a little and then a very usable sound is generated. It sounds quite "honky" so I guess maybe more like a single coil maybe?

I nearly bought the Stormy Monday's but thought that I may as well go for pickups with three distinct sounds, get your moneys worth eh? Although they are expensive, it is more expensive to buy lesser quality and then change to BK's like I did. In the end I bit the bullet and bought the best and I certainly don't regret buying them. I would highly recommend them if you are serious about your tone and you have the scratch. They really bring out the sound of your guitar.

They're in a Vintage v100 icon lemondrop guitar.
They replace the wilkinson pups originally installed.
Although a beginner would make use out of the original pups, I wanted a more accurate reproduction of Peter Greens sounds.

The output is vintage, but punchy and projects very well compared to hot contemporary pups.
The tone is fairly neutral but I tend to back off the bass end of the neck pup to give more power to the top strings, just like Peter did.
I play blues, latin rock and fusion.
These pups nail all aspects of Greenys tone and I am just loving playing this guitar, now.
I wouldn't play death metal with em!

I'd replace them with the same pup if damaged or nicked.
Although there's a growing number of pup makers pandering to the PG style,BKP gets my vote.

These are passive hand-wound, hand-made vintage humbuckers. The bridge pickup is scatterwound with 42AWG plain enamel wire and the neck pickup is wound with Heavy Formvar. Both use Alnico 2 unpolished magnets. They are sold as a callibrated set. Impedence at the bridge was 7.7k and 7.1k at the neck. The bridge and neck humbuckers are wound permanently out of phase with each other. Various covers are available - I opted for plain nickel. I bought the 1/2"(long)leg which fitted the guitar fine, though the stock pups had a 1/4" leg. Fitting instructions came with the pickups. They even included a set of free strings and a pick!

This set replaced the stock pups in my PRS Santana SE guitar. I soldered them onto the stock selector switch and retained the stock pots. The original pups let down an otherwise great guitar. I have a number of other electrics including a Gibson SG and an Ibanez Jem 7VW, but I found myself avoiding playing the PRS due to the relatively poor sound.

The sound from the Bare Knuckle pups is amazing! I can't rate them highly enough. The bridge pups is rich sounding with a great bite when the volume pot is cranked up. Not unlike a great ACDC sound. It certainly provides plenty of sustain to notes with a full attack when playing lead. There is great string separation on chords. The bridge pup has a full bodied blues sound with similar output as the bridge. The magic happens when you select both pups together. Due to the different wire used and the fact that bridge and neck humbuckers are wound permanently out of phase with each other you get that seet, haunting vocal Peter Green sound that he had on his 59 Les Paul. These pickups nail the sound EXACTLY! I play through the Fractal Audio Axe-Fx Ultra. I also have a Marshall JCM 800. They sound great through both amp systems.

I bought these 4 weeks ago and ave played them constantly. I've tinkered with and played guitar for 27 years and this was the best guitar upgrade I've done! I would recommend it to anyone wanting a great rock or blues sound. For TAHT Peter Green sound these things are spot on - I had to remind myself that I was playing a cheap PRS and not Peter Greens 59 LP! The company has a personal touch to customer care and were helpful and prompt with enquiries. I am considering replacing my SG stock pups with other Bare Knuckle pups. Buy them - you wont regret it.

Installed in an '03 Gibson Joe Perry "boneyard" LP.
Replaced the original burstbuckers which come from the factory out of phase. A good stock sound but the #2 burstbuckers can be muddy and loose. The PG Blues come as a set so the original set had'da go...

Output is average. (I make my amp do the work, it's an old homebrew, similiar to a vintage plexi with cascaded gain, no effects. Cab is an earcandy buzzbomb w/grnmachines, great cabs and drivers by the way.)
The pickups have incredible tone, individually and together. They range from a fat outta phase strat to a thick LP. It's a must to work the volume and tone controls to fully appreciate these, you can really dial in some beautiful tone.
Depending on amp, I've used them for straight up swing to vintage metal. If the tone is there, the gain will come....just depends on the gear.

I'm thinking about another set to go in an LP standard faded that has the PG mods that came from CV guitars. So yea, I really dig these.

I ordered these direct from Bare Knuckles after e mailing Tim Mills about options (zebra coils) and cap rating reccomends. Tim was very helpfull all around and revised a lower cost for no covers, an unexpected bonus. Since I'm stateside there was the exchange rate to consider but they are really worth it. (the rate has been dropping in favor to the US dollar as of late)
The pickups came within 3 weeks from the order date, very cool for a nonstock item. They were packaged very well and the overall quality is excellent.
There are some great little companys out there doing their niche thing and feeding the tone hounds world wide, I found another one in Bare Knuckles.

The PG Blues set is basically a pair of passive humbuckers with the neck pickup wired permanently out of phase with the bridge. I believe this is designed to emulate the famous "Peter Green" sound. They are fairly low powered in keeping with the vintage vibe.

I installed these pickups in a custom shop Les Paul (and had to remove a set of BK Mules - also great pickups) to accommodate this. The Mules had been in there for several years, giving me a great "pushed PAF" tone. However I'd heard great things about the PG Blues and wanted to experiment. Gary Moore lives locally and he's installed these in two of his own Les Pauls, apparently.

These pickups are the best I've ever used. The bridge has a real sweetness and fatness to it, with a great bite that doesn't slice your ears off - it also retains a great tone due to the low-powered nature of these pickups. The neck is really transparent, almost jazzy - think Paul Kossoff in the Fire & Water era. The middle position is where the bonus comes - a great out-of-phase sound with no volume drop, which has a wonderful vocal quality to it. The tone controls seem to be less active, but tweaking the volume controls starts to bring the pickups back in phase with each other for some unexpected but excellent results. The whole package makes a Les Paul much more versatile, in my opinion.

I'm in a covers band so Les Pauls are usually not versstile enough compared to a strat, PRS or tele, but the PG Blues change all that - you get a great clean sound in the middle position. I've been playing for 35 years so have tried a lot of stuff in my time. Currently playing through a pair of Fender 57 Deluxe reissues for small gigs or Dr Z MAZ 38 or Boogie Lonestar Special for the bigger stuff - the PG's sound great whatever. I'm ordering another set for another VOS Les Paul of mine. BK will also wind them with four-conductor wire so you can have the out-of-phase on a push-pull, however I don't think I'll bother, the stock set is so perfect. I don't believe in Holy Grails as your tastes change over the years, however I really can't see myself changing these pickups - haven't grinned so much in years!

Replacing Gibson 57 classic pickups

Found 57 Classics to be too muddy.

The sound from these pickups is unbelievable, the balance from neck to both pickups on to the bridge is perfect.

All three settings sound great, they really bring my guitar to life, but most people will be most interested about the middle out of phase tone. And it is brilliant. Far better than the old magnet turn over thing that you can do, if you want the Peter Green out of phase sound, you must get these pickups !

I play 60's / 70's / 80's rock, and these pickups can cover all those eras effortlessly, don't let the low output figure fool you...these pickups rock !

I would definitely get these pickups again, in fact I may do so to put on my other guitars....the sound is so infectious.

Would like to try othe Bare Knuckle Pickup humbuckers as well to see how they sound.

Theses pickups look as good as they sound as well, aged covers...much better than the Seymour Duncan Antiquity aged covers or the Gibson VOS aged covers.

All the rave reviews of these pickups are true, it's not hype, they are the real deal !

Humbuckers that are wired to give that out of phase sound in the middle setting like the Peter Green TONE.

Being a fan of Peter Greens for 30 years and also Gary Moore for many years my attention was caught last year when I discovered that Bare Knuckle where producing a set of Humbuckers that recreated the Greeny tone. I then set out to recreate that guitar, after looking for a suitable guitar that I could relic I eventually found an excellent Les Paul copy.Believed to be a Japanese Epiphone but complete with a Gibson style headstock and Gibson decal, although not the exact colour match to Peter's. Overall it ticked all the boxes for this project.

The overall output is lower than the usuall good quality Humbuckers but it's the middle setting that sets these beauties apart from anything else.The Greeny tone is legendary and these match that sound all the way, how to describe the sound I don't know, just listen to Need your love so Bad by Fleetwood Mac and then you will know. When they where fitted I intended to try them out for 5 minutes and ended up playing 3 hours, the 30 year wait was over just awesome for Blues but add some distortion and Parisienne Walkways just oozes out.

I would'nt change these pickups for any others, to my knowledge these are the only ones that produce that TONE ! Get the aged covers to complete the look. A word for Bare knuckle, I had to send the neck pickup back because I could'nt get that tone at first (they had not been wired to give that out of phase tone, their genuine mistake) after calling them they turned the pickup around within 48 hours and could'nt apologise enough BRILLIANT PRODUCT & BACKUP off Bare Knuckle. Have installed this matching neck/bridge set in my 2007 Les Paul standard replacing the original Burstbuckers. I believe Gary Moore is using these gems.

I can't get off on the Burstbucker rasp - guess its down to personal taste. I wanted a more rounded vintage tone that lets the sound of the instrument through.

I also fancied the versatility of the middle out of phase sound ala Peter Green. I tried the reverse magnet mod on the Burstbuckers, it was OK but I wanted more tone (don't we all!).

Output is fairly low but this in line with the vintage PAF spec.

I have a Marshall TSL and a Peavey Delta blues with a few pedals.

OK, the important bit - the sound. The bridge and neck by themselves are all I ever wanted, giving everything from transparent clean sounds with real character to biting rock distortion.

Pull in both pickups and you are in real PG territory - hollow, woody tones but with real flexibilty if you play with the volume and tone controls.

These pups are perfect for my music; blues to classic rock. Not sure they would be suitable for shed - go get some EMGs or wardogs!

I've been playing for too many years but these pups are something else - just love 'em to death.

The support from Tim Mills at Bareknuckle is great. Ring him for advice on which pup to buy and you'll get an honest answer. There is a 14 day replacement option too but frankly I didn't need it.

Expensive - perhaps, but you are getting real vintage materials, hand wound pups and classic sounds.

Great value - oh yes! Try 'em and buy 'em.

Peter Green Bareknuckle pickups - The PG Blues humbucker set features Alnico II unpolished magnets, scatterwound bridge coils of 42AWG plain enamel wire and uniquely wound Heavy Formvar neck coils for the legendary out of phase mid position. Vintage correct solid nickel silver baseplates and covers along with totally unpotted coils.

Their appearance is so much more attractive than Gibson and other pickups - and I have the regular models rather than the preaged ones but the metals covers are just sexier. How come it's taken so long to do this?

Both pickups replaced but not the volume or tone pots. Just before leaving the guitar in the store for the PU change I played for 10 minutes through a Koch Studiotone (my main stage amp for small clubs) and was asking myself this guitar sounds fantastic why am I changing the pickups?
Because I really enjoy and appreciate Peter Greens early records (With John Mayall and early Fleetwood Mac and Otis Spann) and I wanted to check them out after reading (and hearing)Neville Marten's reviews in UK Guitarist and UK Guitar Techniques.

These aren't hot pickups - if you are looking for high gain metal or dollops of overdrive or perma crunch go elsewhere.
They are not even 'potted' so I was a little worried that they might start squealing or feedbacking at high volumes. Their output in volume terms is equivalent to Gibson Classic 57, Burstbuckers. Less 'hot' than the 496R and 500T found in the Les Paul Classics.
I play Blues, rock, jazz and country through a Koch Twintone, Koch Studiotone, Laney VC 30, Mesa Boogie Subway blues, Dr Z Mini Z and a Fender Pro 15 watt amp. I don't use effects much.
Let me start by saying these pickups FAR EXCEEDED my expectations - they have a lot of sound in them. Now most of us get up onstage and within an hour have both volume and tone knobs on 10 on our Humbuckers?Right?
Try setting volumes on 7 and tones 7 and adding or subtracting small increments gives you a fantastic range of tones and textures - (like an active pickup system)You can actually get a very wide range of 'classic' sounds from these pickups in each of the three PU selector positions.
The bands I play in are so fed up about hearing about news pickups, strings, cables etc... I don't mention it any more - in both cases after the first set/rehearsal everyone was asking how was I getting such a sweet range of tones - So these PGs give you a fantastic (a very rare word for me to use)pallette of sounds.
The middle pickup setting is even better than I hoped and small tweaks of either volume or tone knobs take you to new places in tone heaven.
On the neck or Bridge pickup put on Fresh Cream or Disraeli Gears and enjoy yourself then Led Zep one for all those Telecaster sounds then some Hendrix - you get the picture. So you also have all the great known LP sounds on top of the Need your love so bad PGreen sound.
Very versatile pickups I totally agree with the guy who said "I sit down for 10 minutes and 4 hours go by". These pickups are a pure GAS pleasure to tone heaven with clean, crunch or overdrive amp settings.
They also remind me of the Jimmy Page Pickups with all the push/pull pots and different configurations without the hassle.

I would get replacements straight away.
I have been playing for over thirty years and have or have owned most 'classic guitars' and amplifiers.
These Pickups are great - the basic tone is 100% PAF territory (yes I know all PAFs sound different)and they are also very versatile.
I would say that they have such a range of sounds you might think the guitar had a Varitone (like the ES 345 or 355) but I know a lot of players don't dig on those or even or a Jimmy Page configuration.
Anyhow the basic LP sounds and the Peter Green sounds are all there and more.
BTW No squealing at high levels.
Sounds great through both English and American tube amps.

The output level would appear to be slightly lower than most humbuckers I've tried.

I'm using a re-issue Marshall JTM45, but these pickups work great through a Line6 PodXT too. The Neck pickup sounds excellent through a Vox wah pedal.

I think the tone is really well balanced. The bass on the neck pickup is a little bit high at the moment, but I'm sure it will fall in line when I adjust the pickup height.

I play Blues Rock & hard rock, and I find these to be among the best pickups I've ever come across for this type of music. The bridge cuts through really well & the neck is fatter than a standard Les Paul neck humbucker. The in between setting gives the closest Peter Green tone that I've heard anywhere, due to the reverse wound neck pickup that sounds 'out of phase' when the two pickups are selected. I've tried the reverse magnet mod that everyone talks about, and while it was mildly enjoyable, the mod doesn't compare to what Bare Knuckle have come up with in the design of these pickups. Another thing that I really like about these 'buckers is that when you roll the volume slightly off (on either PU), the sound clears really well. I don't know a lot about pickups, but I find this to be a necessary requirement for ANY pickup. When using the tone controls, there are a lot more variations in sound, From Bluesbreakers era Clapton to Boogie style ZZ Top!. If you want to play all-out death metal, these are probably not for you, but I think the 'blues' in the title is underselling these pickups. They sound great playing hard/classic rock, definitely with a vintage touch!

If these PU's were stolen, I'd hunt the perpetrator down and beat him to death with the guitar he was going to put them in! Seriously, I'd be straight onto Bare knuckle to order another set.

I've been playing 25 years, and my other guitars are a standard strat & an Aria ProII les paul from the Matsumoku factory era. I might even put a set in the Aria!

There's nothing I 'hate' about these PU's - they do exactly what they claim to do!

I really like the 'woody' tone of my GMLP, but these pickups have literally brought it to life. They take a bit of getting used to, but the more you play them the more sounds you can coax out of them.
