Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Much more than a P90 it is emulating, but noticeable less than the hot Dragon II Bass Pickup. Some of it might be that this guitar has the bridge pickup position very close to the bridge, meaning there isn't much string vibration going on for this pickup to pick up.
Tone: Like a P90 (But dead quiet) Edgy, Fat and has the unique piano like tone. Has a lot of highs and presence.
Sonic evaluation: This pickup is part of the ZBS line from Bartolini which are designed to cut through. Imagine that, a P90 that can cut through with the best of them. This pickup is Fat, but tight as can be. This pickup is always breaking up a little but it always sounds so natural. Low gain is very rewarding. Medium to Medium High gain is awesome. It does seem to lose a little control with my Marshall cranked to heavy metal levels of gain when compared to the PRS Dragon II in the neck. I think it is because this pickup really has some good vintage character. The ZBS 70 in my other semi-hollowbody sounds much more modern despite being lower on the "hotness" scale. This pickup (ZBS 75) is very sensitive to touch and has incredible amounts of detail, like nothing I've ever heard before. The overtones are LOUD, i.e. harmonics galore (Ever heard the low E string ring out a note a couple octaves up from the note you are fretting, clear as day? Increadible). If you aren't a perfect guitar player, you'll know it when you play this thing. Don't be afraid of it though, because it will make you a much better player. I am using this guitar on two all tube amps and the forementioned Marshall which is a valvestate amp.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Use this any place you want a humbucker with the unique P-90 tone.

Comments: I'm 26 years old and have only been playing for a year, but have been in love with guitar rock since I first started listening to music. It is such a privalege to begin playing with such good equipment. Because I can't get away with mistakes I am learning at a tremendous rate thanks in part to the bartolini. When I am finally good at playing, I will be truly good. Bartolini Pickups are the best all around Pickups on the planet. When you play them you will wonder why all pickups aren't like them.
