Reason for pickup change: looking for a clearer tone, i also wanted to put another lawrence pickup in! i have guitars with older L-90 / L-500 / L-250 / Dan Armstrong Ampeg Pickups and love bill lawrence pickups.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: fat in humbucker mode, fender-like in single coil mode, always balanced without being sophisticated. mr. lawrence told me that he has 3 winding strengths from clean to ultra heavy - i own the version in between. You have to ask him about it.
Tone: very balanced, it can even get sharp with the outofphase and the singlecoil-options
Sonic evaluation: i have a bunch of amps and i use this guitar with every amp. the pickups delivers something like a modern paf tone. they areultra-honest! that means that they tranmit the sound the guitar delivers. the Sg is a guitar that doesn't delivers much bass frequencies and the pickups transmit that. especially in the single coil mode, my sg is very percussive - the tone is great for vintage single note funkstyle! i've talked to bill on the pjone about the hyper-treble outofphase sound a single L-465 delivers switched and he told me that this setting only works in conjunction with the other pickup. in this mode, the two pickups prouce a shimmery yet midrangey tone. i'd like to mention that the singlecoil sound is yet loud enough and has enough midrange to use it for tight rock sounds.
bill recommends 250k potis because of the special construction of those pickups.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: i believe it can be used for many styles of music. i started to work with the tone controls which is gas with these pickups.

Comments: if i have to, i'll buy these pickup again. i play for about 25 years now and i am mainly a fender guy. the L-465ers turn my sg into the guitar i know from so many productions - from fat slleazy rock&roll to rusty crunchy new wave tones. the swithing options lt me get some funk/soul sounds as well. be aware: these pickups will make it clear whether Your guitar has some tone or not, they punch out what You put in!

Reason for pickup change: Needed a better tonal match to the guitar as well as a classier look.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Noticably hotter than a PAF but doesn't behave like most high output PU's through a clean amp
Tone: Creamy vintage humbucker type tone with clear highs
Sonic evaluation: Direct into a Marshall JTM45 or direct into a Marshall Jubilee when the situation calls for a master volume. Cabs are either a Vintage 30 open back 2x12 or a Marshall 4x12 with G12H speakers depending on the situation.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Blues/Rock. This a bridge position PU.

Comments: I like a HB in the bridge of work horse strat, but I have never been able to find the right one untill now. I E-mailed Bill Lawrence and the L465 is what he said would would work great in conjuntion with single coils in the neck and middle. I had never heard of this PU before, but I figure Bill knows more than I do about PU's. Switching from the SC's to the bridge there is no abrupt transition in volume. Additionally it is not abruptly brighter or darker in tone but it is noticably fatter. The tone is very much like that of good vintage humbucker with creamy mids and clear open highs. The PU uses ceramic magnets and Bill specifies that you must use 250k controls, so I was afraid that it may be really trebley. Not so, it so sweet that you would swear it uses alnico magnets. He says that ceramics don't have to be harsher than alnicos and this is the proof. I believe he must have designed it for the use of 250K controls so it would be compatible with existing strat PU's and electronics. The PU has 4 conducter leads and this the only full size HB that gives a convincing split coil sound that I have ever run across. This PU has plenty of power when you start pushing a distorted amp. BTW, Bill and Becky are among the best people in the industry to work with.
