Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: It seems louder than a stock PAF but not a clear sounding.
Tone: At first this pickup sounded like mud but I let a guy that I know look at it. He owns CNTarasi guitars so he knows what he is doing. Anyway after he yelled at me for routing out a vintage guitar he fixed the pickup. He said that the pole screws were sticking out of the bottom of the pickup over a 1/4 inch and that this would effect the flux field of the pickup in a bad way. I don't know what that means but he cut off the excess on the bottom of the pole peices and that did make the pick up sound a lot better. More balanced and with good harmonics.
Sonic evaluation: I have a 5150 amp and a Gibson S-1.
The pickup sounds a lot better since I let my friend work on it. It is not bright but has a lot of harmonics now and sounds great distorted.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I never tried it in the neck but i would say that anything that you would use a PAF for you can use this for too.

Comments: If it were stolen I would not kill myself finding another one. I don't think they make them anymore anyway. I have been pklaying for 15 years and own a 5150 and an S-1. I love the distorted tone and singing sweet harmonics. I don't hate anything about it. It works well. I wish it had two black coils and not zebra coils but I guess thats why they named it "Zebra Coils". I bought it for the sound and not the looks anyway. I am satisfied with the pickup and it is a good value. I do not remember what I paid for it but I think it was cheap. Again a nice singing sound but only after I had it worked on.
