Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: True to Vintage, but fuller and richer. Same as most 6.3-7.0 A-5 strat pickups
Tone: I asked for pickups that would nail the SRV/John Mayer type sound, since this strat is my main strat for blues.
Sonic evaluation: The strat pickups I like best are Seymour Duncan Antiquity Surfers and Fender Fat 50's......up until the day I received my Chubtone 63's with a requested OVERwound bridge pickup that was specifically ordered to retain the vintage tone, but with enough output to sound fatter than stock. Let me tell ya, if you know strat tone, you'll like the 63's. Pure, straight up, bold, authentic blues tone ala SRV/KWS/Mayer. I'm not trying to cop them, but I DO consider that tone to be my favorite strat tone. The amps I favor are Bogner, Blues Pearl, and Matchless Chieftains, and the Chubtone neck pickup sounds so good through all of them, it puts tears in my eyes. LOL
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: If you're a longtime strat player, who's looking for that authentic tone you'd only find in a magical 63-64 strat you can't afford, this where to buy your pickups. I'll spare you the boastful crap about myself, since I'm sure you're a serious player, yourself, to even be here researching these. Comments: What I love most about these pickups is that they don't mush out when you dig in hard. They don't sound like a cheap approximation of real tone, they are real tone. After telling Mike how much I dug these, I asked him what other Chubtones he favors, and he suggested the 69's. I might have to make that my next strat pickup purchase, although these 63's will stay in this guitar. Mike Gray is a cool guy to deal with, and knows what he's doing. He uses all the right materials, and the pickups looked and smelled like quality, the minute I pulled them out of the box....they're right up there with Antiquity Surfers at $100 less per set.
