Instrument
:
Epiphone Elitist Nick Valensi P-94 Guitar

replacement for original Gibson P-94 PU's
Changed the original pickups for these specially made pickups by David Barfuss for a unique vintage-type Rock'n Roll sound.
Be carefull: these are N O T the standard pickups sold as "Mighty Mouse" on David's ebay shop (article-no.: 230191749317) !!
I bought the Mighty Mouse PUs from stock and found them to middy for my needs.
David asked me what I exactly wanted, and rewired them, also changing the magnets from Alnico II to Alnico III types for a slightly tighter attack.
Sound
:
10
Output Level: low to medium (between Strat and original p-90's)
I use various amps, mainly a Fender Concert 112 from the 80's
The sound is true 50's R'n'R or R'n'B. Very sweet trebles, a round bass fundament and a lot "headroom". (Maybe thats due the semiacoustic guitar they're in, I don't know. You can play very sensitive and expressive. You can vary the loudness by picking or strumming with different strenght from clean to distorted without changing the gain or volume!
The pickups have enough treble to turn the volume Knob down a bit for rhythm parts without loosing sound (notice that I also changed the crappy wiring and pots of the Epiphone guitar for vintage cloth wiring and military type pots by singlecoil.com)
Overall Rating
:
10
I would strongly recommend David's Pickups, just because he can really customize them for you for a very reasonable price!
I've been playing in bands for more than thirty years. I'm using this Epiphone with the customized Mighty Mouse-pickups for a Beatles-Project, for which it is perfect!
Compared to the p-94s David's PU's are much clearer and sweeter sounding. They can "sing" extremely good when overdriven. Every time I come home from work, I have to pickup this guitar and play a little. Every time I discover some new sides of their sound. I also have the impression, that the pickups changend with playing. They are getting better and better! It seems that the "singing" tone is coming out more and more even when played clean ...!
