Artists using this pickup: me
You musical style(s): Everything that comes to mind.
Reason for pickup change: I will NOT change them, unless threatened with extreme physical harm to myself or family.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: Hot driving tone. Like a good humbucker should sound.
Tone: balanced
Sonic evaluation: Dean EVO special into Toneworks AX1G mostly for headphone practice. (hey the kids need to sleep when I have time to practice)(kids don't sleep = no practice time) That said, I have no problem being locked into headphones with this guitar. I used to have these odd personalized presets on the thing to make my superstrat sound better. With the Dean I find myself turning everything down, (turning off the EQ option because it's not needed...etc). Now my sounds are so stripped down it isn't even funny. I even find myself playing it in bypass mode, using the toneworks as some sort of a fancy dedicated headphone amplifier. I love the tone on this guitar. It's made me realise that the toneworks sucks at distortion. I hear all this hiss on top of the distortion and it bugs me because it gets in the way of the tone of the bare signal. I want to play clean all the time (shit, these PUPs are turning me into a pussy!!!) Of course turn on the distortion and aside from said hiss it drives like a good pup should. With the distortion on 2/3 and a bit of room reverb I nail the Scorpions mid eighties tone. I can also nail Frampton and co. from the seventies. The neck pickup sounds nice and jazzy nails Santana when it wants too. Tapped, these pickups are just plain unbelievable. I've never heard humbuckers sound so useful tapped. Tap both and set the selector in the middle and the clean sound is amazing. Any other position works good as well driven or clean. 8 useful settings from two pickups.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Play everything, suits me just fine. Death metalers may look for replacements. I believe it would also do country twang, but I'm not sure as my guitar is 9 pnds of solid mahogany.

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: I've owned quite a few guitars over 17 years, good and bad. This is a good one, in no small part due to the pickups. These PUPs are a reason to buy a DEAN. What other cheaper guitar gives you useful pickups? I have questioned why Dean outfits the higher end EVO's with SD Pearly Gates. Must be the solid maple carved tops on them. As it is, these pickups are keepers on the lower models. I thought I might have to change them after I ordered the guit. But alas, no I don't. If stolen out of my guitar (????) I'd probably contact Dean and see if there was a way to get new ones. Or check Ebay as people sell these there occasionally.
