Features
:
Pickup features: Passive P-90 (single coil) Ceramic Magnet.
Impedence or other specs: 8.85k
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: '89 Gibson Les Paul Junior
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: P-90 of unknown origin also a recent Gibson P-90 and a Fralin P-90
Other pickups on guitar: none
Artists using this pickup: ????
You musical style(s): Primarily "Blues Rock" but really a bit of anything.
Reason for pickup change: Something different. The Gibson P-90 was super noisy, and the Fralin just didn't do it for me (it was a vintage wind). The unkown P-90 was super high output (13.2k) so it wound up sounding more like a humbucker.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: At 8.85k it's slightly hotter than a stock "Gibby" P-90 I'll say Vintage +1
Tone: Suprisingly balanced, I was expecting "Super Mud" seeing as this actually has a ceramic magnet. The bass is well represented, the mids are very prevalant, and the trebel isn't too spikey.
Sonic evaluation: I'm running this '89 Gibson LP Junior (singlecut) through a Mesa Rect-O-Verb 50 combo with an Eminence V12 speaker. I don't use any effects so, I can't really say how the PUP sounds when going through any of those units. This does have a ceramic magnet but DiMarzio really did a great job on this PUP in getting a great P-90 tone out of it (not too much of the piercing high-end that you'd expect from a ceramic magnet). It's a bit hotter than most vintage models (which I like), so you get a more juice! A great PUP for "Blues" and "Blues flavored Rock". This doesn't have a Single braided cable, but 2 ground wires and 1 hot.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: This can go from Jazz to Blues to Rock. I wouldn't do metal with it though.
Overall Rating
:
10
Comments: I feel this is a keeper, they are quite hard to find but worth the hunt. I had tried all the stores in the metro Detroit area (and the online stores) and nobody had one, and those who could order it could not give me a time frame. I don't believe that DiMarzio makes alot of these (a shame). I found a brand new, never opened one for sale on ebay and snagged it for $35.00 (a steal). I tried a few different P-90 models like the current Gibson RI, but found it to be too noisy. And despite all of the ranting and raving over the Lindy Fralin models, it just didn't sound that good to me (maybe I should have tried the overwound model). People may be skeptical about this PUP as it has a ceramic magnet, but believe me this sounds very very good, and despite the ceramic magnet sustain is not compromised, nor does it sound harsh. My opinion is that this is the definate "sleeper" of the replacement P-90 crowd. Try one out for yourself (if you can find one). I'd get it again in a heartbeat.
