Sonic evaluation: This review is mainly for the exg expander tone control. It's really a type of EQ device. It does what it's suposed to, boost the bass and treble range and scoops out the mids. I Think that the SA pickups can get a bit harsh sounding at times. I think it's because of the mids sometimes. This device gives the guitar a slightly hollow sound in all the selector positions. Works perfectly for my group and the type of music we play. The band is essencially a bass, drums, guitar trio. Playing at fairly low volumes it keeps the guitar seperated in the mix more. It also is interesting to strum a chord and use that control to tweak it as it decays. It sort of acts like another volume control too. If your a tone nut like me it'll provide loads of ideas. I play this guitar through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with a Weber speaker (they are great) with a Boss delay & Chorus. That's it.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Indie jazz rock, (Cowboy Junkies, but mostly originals)

Comments: I think I'd buy this set up again if it was gone. I've been playing 30+ years. I also use a Fender Strat Plus with a L.R. Bags powered bridge split into two amps. Also a Gibson Les Paul Std. w/Duncans, Gibson Es-347, Taylor acoustic & a Ovation Mandolin. I play the later two thru a Crate D125 amp. The only thing about the EMG setup is the battery issue. I wish there was a better way to deal with that, like maybe a phantom power system?
