Sound
:No Opinion
Perceived output level: on a scale from mild to extra spicy, i'd say these are about medium to kind of spicy. they're AlNiCos, of course they're going to have a high output. not as hot as a telecaster though! Tone: a nice, balanced tone inbetween pickups. I like using position three the most because it has the best combination sound between that classic fender twang and sharp, smooth bass. the sound from these pickups are best heard when you're playing clean, but they react well to distortion to and bring out some natural harmonics. the pickups DO hum, they have AlNiCo magnets, so they hum, but they don't have as much microphonic feedback as my other pickups did. Sonic evaluation: I use these in a 1993 Fender MIM Stratocaster, and I swapped out the stock pups for these. The pickups I have in it now came from a '57 RI mexican stratocaster. I use this through a Behringer Vintager GM110 and through a few effects pedals.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play alternative/hard rock and also soundscaping and alternative type stuff. I typically use the 1, 3, and 5 positions, because the two and four are both overloaded with bass and not enough twang gets through.

Comments: these pickups are great for what I use them for. If I had to replace them for some reason, I'd probably throw on a different set...maybe noiseless pickups or an actual set of '57/'62s. I want to get a strat with lace sensors...but If I did that then it would probably be a cheap strat and the body wood would be a swimming pool so I'd be investing in crap anyways.
I love the nice, round, mellow tone these pickups put out. They're nice, but that's all. They're not amazing, nor are they heavenly. I like them though...better than my stocks.
you can buy these on eBay for less than $20 if you find the right auction...i kind of got ripped, but oh well. it was worth it.

Perceived output level: Pretty stock sounding Tone: Vintage sounding to those who haven't heard the real thing. Kind of dull sounding, not lively at all. Sonic evaluation: Magnatones, Fender tweeds, clones, Vox, Marshall, Orange. These pickups are really not very good. My American Standard with its stock pickups sounded much more alive, and that, I don't think is saying very much. I have played some other reissues and they sound a little bette, but not much.

Comments: I wouldn't buy these again. I've been playing for 14 years, I've played a lot of stuff, too much to list. To me, these pickups don't represent vintage Fender pickups - only cosmetically do they seem accurate. First, they are machine wound, which makes them all sound the same - boring and dead. To get a good set of pickups you have to splurge a little more than these and get a hand wound set. In Fender's defense, they work for those of us who just want some of the old school flavor, but who aren't that picky.
