Sound
:No Opinion
Perceived output level: Slightly hotter that my old preCBullShit tele pu's, but a nice sweet raspy sound Tone: Tight, cutting edge clarity, buttery smooth when overdriven, esp with a tube amp, like a Marshall. Sonic evaluation: Very satisfying blues/rock sounds. I play through a Marshall tuber with 1 12" speaker and a Fender trani with 2 12's.
Plenty of bite with both, but I love the tone I get jammin' through the tubes!
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Good for blues, will emulate that old blues cryin', esp. with a tube amp.
Overall Rating
:8
Comments: I like it a lot; but I'd like to hear these Rio Grandes the other postings talk about.
Been playing 15 years. Have an Ibanez Artstar hollowbody, (like ES335) and Epi electric acoustic.
Own a Fender Pro 185 2 - 12's and enough watts to kick the ass off a Marshall stack.
Also have a Marshall tube amp with 1 - 12 which I highly recommend to you tone-heads. JTM-30

Perceived output level: slightly hotter than a typical telecaster pickup Tone: These pickups are very full-range and extremely present. Sonic evaluation: I currently use the ASAT with my '67 Fender Bassman head and matching Fender 2x12 cab. These are hot, aggressive, full-range pickups that will kick just about any amp in the butt.
The ASAT pickup is not for everyone. If you want sweet, buttery vintage tone--steer clear!! These suckers have teeth. If, on the other hand, you play aggressively (country or rock) or need to slice through
a lot of horns (funk and ska players, take note)--your ship has come in!! The neck pickup is very much like a strat pickup, except for a noticeable bump in the lows and highs (and higher output, of course). Both
pickups together produces a very desireable and cutting tone, with an omnipresent low, dogwistle treble, and scooped midrange. Rear pickup reminds me very much of a really good lap steel pickup. More of all frequencies
than a traditional tele pickup, with an accentuated mid-range.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play original music now that requires a more vintage tone. But for country, rock. funk, and ska; I feel this pickup (and guitar) is ideal!

Comments: I have owned 3 ASATS and love them all. The biggest drawback to the ASAT is that
if you don't like the pickups, you have few manufacturers that make aftermarket
replacements. The only one that I know of is Rio Grande and I'm giving them a call
soon. Generally, I think these pickups are cold and harsh-sounding (thank you, ceramic
magnets). This quality makes them ideal for country, rock, funk, and ska music; where
it is essential to have a bright, cutting and articulate tone. I have played all of these
styles in the past and would choose no other guitar for the task. Lately, I have been searching
for a more relaxed tone, so I am looking to modify my ASAT with a PAF humbucker in the front
and possibly one of Rio Grande's tallboys for the rear.

Perceived output level: Hotter than Fender single coils, but not 2-alarm or anything like that. Tone: Fat . Sounds like a pre-CBS Fender PU. It sounds like all of the fat was removed from the local Crisco plant and was placed directly into these pickups. Sonic evaluation: Through a `75 super or a late 60's Epiphone tube amp with the ASAT, I get one of the best slight-breakup tones around. THese things can be a little noisy at times, but better than most stock single coils. I think these PUs were possessed with the soul of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. My advice to any SRV tone clones-- sell your strat and buy a legacy or ASAT with stock pickups. They are more "Fender" than Fender!
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play funk/fusion, and this guitar and its PUs work fine for gigs. I use a Stat & a Les Paul in the studio, though. These PUs are great for Blues, country, funk, Blues, and Blues!

Comments: I would for sure replace it with a stock G&L unit if the original somehow crapped out. I have been playing since age 7 and I am a total gearhead, so I know good tone when I hear it. I love everything about these PUs, except maybe the single-coil hum. Some will argue that this hum is part of the charm with this type of setup, though, and they may be right. This PU has The TONE. It is one of my main guitars for gigs. I know this may seem like a gushing review, but I swear it's all true.
