Product: GFS Pickups I18 Premium Overwound
Price Paid: US $55.00
Submitted 07/31/2005 at 03:38pm by Chris Woods

Features :
Pickup features: Passive Single Coil
Impedence or other specs: Bridge 10k, Middle 9.4K, Neck 9k

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: Robert Cray Signature Strat
Position: all positions
Pickup being replaced: Fender Robert Cray Customs
Other pickups on guitar: None
Artists using this pickup: No Idea, Don't Care
You musical style(s): Blues, Classic Rock, Country, whatever pops into my head.
Reason for pickup change: The RC Customs were weak, lacking in midrange and shrill. The bridge pickup was like an ice pick until you turned down the tone and then it got muddy.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: Much more ballsy than the RCs, more punch.
Tone: Very Balanced with a good strong bottom.
Sonic evaluation: As far as I can tell, other than being overwound these are made exactly like vintage Fenders. They include fiber bobbins, staggered AlNico magnets, Formvar wire, bees wax potting, push back cloth insulated wires etc. They are not RWRP but are no more noisy than the Crays. Having said that I feel it is only fair to tell you that my strat is fully shielded and I shielded the pups before installing them, but I did this to the Cray pups as well.I play a Robert Cray strat which has been modded with push pulls so that the pickups work as follows, stock strat, bridge and neck in parallel, all three in parallel, bridge/mid humbucking and neck/mid humbucking, through a Fender Super Reverb and Bassman. I did, as always, add a Fralin baseplateto the bridge pup while installing it. The Crays had a very unique sound, just not what I was looking for. The GFS I18s are strong and well balanced. With the stock strat pickup options through my Super Reverb I am now getting volume levels with the amp set on 3 that previously could not be acheived until the amp was set to 4-4.5. The amp breaks up at a lower volume setting and my Tubescreamer, BD2 and Fulldrive really wail now. Crunchy overdrive and distortion are now acheived with the gain knobs at lower settings on all three pedals. On the flip side, with the Crays I could clean up the sound by rolling the guitars volume knob back to 8. Now I have to roll it back to 6, no big deal to me since my tone is clear down to about 2. When I switch the pups to humbucking mode they absolutely scream. There is no mud in the sound and string definition is very clear.I cannot reccomend these pickups strongly enough. They are great at any price and a steal at the $55.00 to $65.00 they are selling for presently.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play blues, rock, country you name it. I am able to get any sound I want from these Pups.

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: I have been playing for 25 years and own too much gear to list. While my level of virtuosity might be substandard, my ear is not. I have owned/played several Fender custom pups, Rio Grandes yada yada yada. I cannot find anything I do not like about these pupsI chose it based on the advice of several guys on the fender forum and must offer them thanks. I will always be searching for "that sound" simply because "that sound" changes from time to time. If they were destroyed I would definitely replace them immediately. If stolen I would do the same as soon as I was released from prison for killing the guy who took my strat.
