Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Think of the hottest P90 you've ever heard(we're talking 50's LP jr. here), then add some high end twang utterly unlike a Fender twang, and a really smooth, almost Brian Mayish overdriven sound....
Tone: The tone is more trebly than my original Dynasonics in my 55 Country Club and 56 6189. This not a bad thing, as my originals got a little muddy in the neck position. Probably the Alnico magnets in the reissues are a bit harsher due to their "newness".
Sonic evaluation: I played these through a ton of old amps- a 4x10 tweed Bassman, a 56 delux, Ampeg ET's, a Super Reverb, and a Hiwatt Bulldog combo. These pu's appear to be a very high quality and accurate repro of the originals. As I mentioned before, they seem to be a bit more trebly, but still sound authentic at the same time. As on the old
Gretsches and Guilds, all 3 positions are usable , if not downright scrumptious. For the uninitiated, these pu's are single coil, noisy screamers that scream "rock me"(Townsends classic tone on Won't get Fooled Again was partly as a result of using Dynasonics through a Gretsch) with shocking intensity, yet can still give a beautiful jazz or country tone loaded with nuance. They (Gretsch) stopped using them because Chet Atkins thought they were too noisy (just like those pesky 50's strat pu's , don't you hate them ?) and probably hated it when they started to distort.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: These pu's sound good and unique in all 3 positions. The dual pu position is much more interesting than on most guitars.
Overall Rating
:
9
Comments: I've owned tweeds, 60's Marshalls, a 65 Vox AC 30 TB, and virtually every Ampeg under the sun. These pu's sound good w/ everything I've tried them through, wonderful through your basic BF Fender. My only beef is the price and make sure to consult with guit tech before you buy- these pu's do not fit on most guitars w/o some modification of the housing. I'm going to put these on my LP sunburst, but will have to get a new mounting thingy made. Otherwise , you owe it to yourself to give these pu's a try (these or the originals ) . The tone is shockingly good , different, and if you're into death metal will still be able to keep up. I'm giving this a 9 rating just because I hate to give out tens unless I'm getting slipped some bills under the table. If you have an old Gretsch w/o the proper pu's, don't worry , these are real close, pop em in.
