Features
:
Pickup Features: Single Coil (set of 3 (2 in guitar))
Impedance: Ranging from about 3-4
Instrument
:
What model guitar or bass did you install this in?: I've installed these in my Marathon Replay series body with a Fender 70's (CBS baby) maple neck.
What position is it in?: Middle and Neck
What pickup are you replacing?: Marathon Stock Pickups (awful things)
Other pickups installed on the instrument?: One GFS Lil' Killer in the bridge position (only 10k not 13k or else it might sound too imbalanced)
Any artists using this pickup?: God Knows
Reason for changing the pickup?: Stock pickups sounded like someone used .80 gauge aluminum wire to wind them
Sound
:
10
What's the output level like?: The output level is fairly decent for single coil pickups
What amps and effects are you using it with?: Currently I have a Behringer OD100 distortion/od and a Behringer Firebird GX108 Combo amp
Tone - Bassy, middy, muddy, trebly, balanced?: Tone is overall very well balanced. Pretty much middle, just enough middle, and clear not-too-unbalanced highs
What style of music do you play? Is this a good match?: I play music ranging from bluegrass to jimi hendrix to incubus so a pretty large variety. Until now I've found these pickups very good for playing the jimi distorted stuff but the pickups also do a fantastic job in clean mode.
Overall Rating
:
10
If it was destroyed or stolen, would you buy it again or get something else?: I would cry my eyes out because these pickups arent available anymore.
How long have you been playing? What other gear do you own?:
I've been playing electric guitar since I was 9 (and I sadly never had a teacher but I know a good sound when I hear it and these pickups definately do the job).
The only thing that really bothered me was the installation because the screws on the pickguard which went through the pickguards plsatic part then to the metal plate would never go through straight. This is yet only a minor con.
Another thing which I changed about the guitar was the bridge pickup which I replaced with a GFS (great pickups) Lil' Killer (mid) for the bridge because the bridge (which has fantastic harmonics btw) wasnt hot enough for me so I took one of the guitar fetish pickups.

Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): Mostly heavy metal
Reason for pickup change: The price was a total steal, it awoke my curiosity. Soundwise I wanted a clearer neck sound, and more Blackmore on the bridge.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: A bit more than stock Fender
Tone: Clear, balanced overall, more round than stock, less screechy top end than stock (still plenty of highs)
Sonic evaluation: I run the maple necked Fender straight into my Marshall Valvestate 8100 amp and into a custom 1x12 cab with an Eminence speaker. The low impedance really surprised me, but here it doesn't mean a low output, but a very balanced one. Overall the sound is very pleasing to the ear without the anomalities of the stock pu's, the sound is clearer, punchier and beautifully round. The pu's are also sport a very good signal to noise ratio, giving wonderful sustain. I mostly play with distortion, and the following applies to that. At bridge the pu gets the natural harmonics really well, even the ones near the nut. A bit too little output for serious distorted rocking at bridge position, though. A balanced tone. The middle pickup is reverse wound, and also reverse phased (I'm going to install a phase switch for the middle position). Works nicely, not much to say really. The neck position is what gets me excited here. The sound is open, expressive, sustains well, sings, and I can get really fabulous "woman" tones by rolling back the tone. Absolutely fantastic! And then comments on the clean sounds: The pu set really gives absolutely gorgeous set of clean sounds, with great dynamics and plenty of sparkle. I have to say that I never thought my amp could deliver clean sounds this beautiful.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I mostly play heavy metal and the Strat is my weapon for Blackmore and Malmsteen style stuff. I find the bridge pu a bit weak for heavy rock (although great harmonics), but the neck pu fits the bill gorgeously. I love the neck sound.

Comments: I've been playing the guitar for 11 years, and have also a Gibson Les Paul and an Ibanez RG. I'd say that if you haven't found your ultimate single coil sound yet, you'd be nuts not to check these out. They are just way too good for the price (I'd say they would be good for 10 times the price!), and they just might give you the sound you need. I know I'll be very happy with these pu's, playing and recording, especially clean parts and singing neck-leads. I might put the JBjr back to the bridge to get a bit of extra output for the riffing side. But, as said earlier, you just can't go wrong with these pu's at the price. It wouldn't be too bad to have several sets of these!

:
Model of guitar or bass: Samick KT-665 Prophet

Other pickups on guitar: One last Generic full sized humbucker

Perceived output level: Pretty hot for singles. Approaches the JB wannabe in the bridge for percieved volume. But not losing character hot, (hard to explain). Sounds pretty balanced with overall.
Tone: Pretty mid defined, though not harsh. Has good highs and tight bass.
Sonic evaluation: My guitar has a Maple Neck-through with Elm body wings. I ran it through a Toneworks AX1G to try it out. (Kids need to be sleeping for me to have practice time). In the mid position with a bit of chorus and reverb it about nailed the beginning tone of "Monkey Business" by Skid Row if you remember that one. Drives a good bit of distortion, had me trying to pinch off harmonics from it, but that didn't get the desired results. Though I don't have one in the bridge I would believe that it would probably have that black strat "Edge" tone from "under a blood red sky" Obviously a single coil spank, though driving mids like a mother, hell the middle position is like that almost already so I'll just assume here. The neck had a nice jangle and tight in the bass department. They work well with the volume knob and tone control, and they're low on noise. Just about an ideal sonic combination for single coils.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play about anything I feel like playing at the moment. These do just about everything fine using the controls to mod them.

Comments: Too bad these never caught on. Hell I never even heard of them until I searched their (Thomann's) websight for a blues harp and almost crapped when I saw a whole set of single coils marked down from 99 to 19 Euro. Hohners websight doesn't even acknowledge guitars anymore, so go figure about the price. They're going the way of the great white buffalo. Too bad folks you probably missed the train unless you find them someday on E-bay sold by someone who can't appreciate a good pickup if it's missing a Seymour Duncan label. If I wasn't married I'd shell out another 100 for 5 more sets just to have them for project guitars/replacments. Being that it's a solid magnet rail type it matches up good to the Floyd Rose thats on the guitar also. I've found my ideal single coils (if only hey weren't discontinued :-(. I'd rate these a 12 if I could, a 20 for the price I payed.
