Features :
passive humbucker
output 16k

Instrument :
currently in bridge position of an ibanez s520ex, previously for an experiment it was in the neck pos. in a series 10 strat (not a good outcome)before that it was in the bridge of a yamaha rgx 211. needless to say as far as im concerned no other pick up sounds quite as good

Sound : 10
the crunch this thing puts out is awesome. with the right effects/amp you can go anywhere from rock to total metal meltdown. i currently run it through a digitech gnx3 into a vibration technology 2x12 phasor amp and or a roland cube60. although it has some incredible distorted abilitys it has a very nice clean sound although it realy needs some chorus and reverb to make it chime and ring.

Overall Rating : 10
i have been playing for 22 years and have had quite enough guitars/amps/effects and experimented with enough pickup sound combos to form an opinion. i would definately buy again if something happend to it. i would highly recomend it if your playing any 80s metal but, it isnt totaly locked in to a one genre. you arent going to get that tele twang, the crispness of a strat or gibson 335 muddy bottom blues out of this pickup but as for for the rest of the sound spectum its all in there.

Price Paid: US $12 used
Submitted 07/07/2005 at 09:35pm by Mean Gene Donnelly

Features :
Pickup features: Passive Humbucker
Impedence or other specs: 16k

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: Charvel Model 375
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Dimarzio IBZ USA
Other pickups on guitar: none
Artists using this pickup: ???? 80's metal guys?????
You musical style(s): 80's metal
Reason for pickup change: Ibz lacked output.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: This pickup is 2nd only to the X2N for pure gain. It has more gain than the Evolution
Tone: Very balanced. Less middy than most Dimarzio's (Super Distortion, Paf Pro, Evolutin, Breed, etc.)
Sonic evaluation: I'm using an Uptown pedal pusher as a buffer/splitter, Rocktron Pro Gap Ultra (A gain MONSTER), some ADA delay units for efx, a BBE 462, and a Marshall 9100. This pickup sounds perfect. There isn't much more to say. It is the perfect balance of bass and treble. It is never harsh. The harmonics are over the top too. I've always used Dimarzio's and regarded them as harmonic rippers, but the j90c screams easily like Zakk Wylde or Dimebag Darrel. Playing White Lion with this pickup seems effortless.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: This pickup was designed and built with 80's metal in mind. I suppose it would work well for death metal also. This pickup would have too much gain for the neck position. The cleans are okay if you tap the coils. I haven't tried it in parallel yet. I haven't seen a reason to change what's perfect.

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: I'm going to buy them all. They are <$20 on Ebay, and that's with shipping included!!! They are all MADE IN THE USA. I've been playing 12 years, and I haven't found a pickup that can touch it. I wish someone would make this pickup again. I also wish I could get it in different colours. THIS IS THE BEST PICKUP ON THE PLANET. PERIOD.

Features :
Pickup features: Passive Humbucker
Impedence or other specs: High output Made In USA

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: Jackson DK2S
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: duncan design JB (hb102b)
Other pickups on guitar: duncan design single coil middle, sustaniac in neck
Artists using this pickup: myself
You musical style(s): thrash, shred metal like early Metallica and Megadeth
Reason for pickup change: duncan design bridge is good, but I usally like more output and harmonics than the duncan design can deliver.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: hot enough
Tone: very balanced and tight . Lots of sustain
Sonic evaluation: My Jackson DK2S goes through a Ampeg VH140C with a GenzBenz 4x12 cabinet. BBE sonic maximizer and DSP128 Digitech effects rackmount through the effects loop.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: metal with solos in it ,this pickup is great. Bridge application of course

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: If it were stolen I would replace asap. Ive played seymour duncans ,dimarzio and emg pickups and this pickup is just simply amazing. Turned all the way up on the guitar its very aggressive and hot and does Metallica or Megadeth sounds with ease. Its very harmonic and it cleans up very nicely. This pickup dosent feedback at high volumes either.

Sonic evaluation: had guitar 17 years.studied many other pickups extensively.i can get any sound i need (super clean to nuclear meltdown)from my j-90c.dontfix it if it isnt broken.AMPS:a.r.t.attack module, fender musicmaster bass, penncrest custom amp, etc.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: see above, bridge pos.

Features :
Pickup features: Typical 57 gibson style passive humbucker. Dual rows of screw pole pieces, nice ceramic magnet.
Impedence or other specs: Who knows...

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: 82 Charvel Strat
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: DiMarzio
Other pickups on guitar: Jackson single coil
Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): Rock and metal
Reason for pickup change: It was in the guitar, which I bought used, from a friend.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: It was hot. Sounded like a JB, but much better, more balanced, actually, the Anderson H3+ sounds like a harsher version of this pickup.
Tone: Aggressive, hot, sweet, defined mids, crisp treble, tight bass.
Sonic evaluation: As noted above. This is a great pickup. A Classic. There is another model, the J-90, but it sucks, and it's rumoured that Grover Jackson called it the "Mudbucker". The ceramic magnet rejuvinates what is otherwise a forgetable pickup in the alnico version.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Rock. Hard Rock. Rock. Did I say rock?

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: I've been playing long enough to give lessons to everyone I know who plays the guitar. Still learning at the same time, though, like most everyone else. If it was lost, I'd find it, or forget about it. If I found it again, I'd probably keep it. It's a great pickup, if you like the JB sound, but don't really like the muddiness or shrillness of the JB, then this is your pickup.
