Im using a JR Beck LP copy.Stock unknown pickups sounded pretty good.In fact,I never planned on replacing them so soon.I was fartin around on EB and saw an auction for a custom set of buckers, threw my bid in and won.
While I was at it, I bought some push/pull pots so I could tap the coils

Just want to state that Im a novice at pickups and my opinion is based on my guitar, amp(s),ears, etc.
I visited his site and was introduced to the Ultimate Rock set!
The bridge, aptly named Black Widow, came in at 15k.The neck was a Hybrid that came in at 7.8k(with coil tap at 6.8k).I requested 4 wire leads on both.I also requested non adjustable studs for a clean smooth look(no covers for me).You basically can ask for whatever you want.
I played through a Peavey Transformer 112 and a boutique 8 watt tube hybrid(F-Champ and M-18w)
How do they sound? Wow!
The bridge is beyond belief. With a 15k Alnico 8 Mag I expected tremendous output ALONG with noise, feedback. What I experienced was massive sensitivity, clarity, harmonics.Sustain is great with some overdrive/gain going on.Since I coil tapped this, I also experienced some sweet twang with a little loss in volume but very little loss in the above mentioned.
The neck is very creamy(I guess?).Hard to describe. Not a big neck fan in general. But I spent more time with this pickup since the LP neck sound is so radically different.Even with a much lower output, sustain still rules here.I tapped this puppy also and the outcome was less than expected.Almost the same creamy sound with a hint of volume loss and a bit of twang.I don't think its the pickups fault since the bucker spec is 7.8 and the tap is 6.8.I was hoping for more of a change in sound. But the specs show clearly that there's only 1k difference..Like I started off, Im a novice and things like this only help me understand the nuances of pickups.Personally I would go for a more "drastic" split between bucker and tap.
Also, I ended up wiring in a series/parallel switch and phase switch.
Some serious buffet of tones can be had
Wiring for coil taps, series/parrallel, and phase is a biotch!

Im more than satisified with these puppies. These will stay for a long time. They have only elevated my desire to practice, practice, practice.
Whats also great is that you can order a custom set just for you even though I ordered one of his pre-spec'd sets.Even if you order a pre spec'd set, you can ask for what ever specs you like for that specific pickup.
It did take awhile to get mine but quality takes time. He's a one man operation.Just started building singles too.Check his site out
Will be ordering again for my HSS Peavey
