Pickup features: Passive Quad rail humbucker Impedence or other specs:
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Ibanez RG370DX Position: bridge Pickup being replaced: Stock ibanez PSDN (or somthin like that) Other pickups on guitar: Stock neck humbucker and middle singlecoil Artists using this pickup: Only one i know of is Matt Bellamy You musical style(s): Thrash, Black and death metal. heavy rock. classic rock. the usuals Reason for pickup change: Needed something more powerful and to make my harmonics scream! ;-)
Sound
:No Opinion
Perceived output level: So much more powerful. Sounds acitve Tone: sounds fairly balanced. litl less mids tho Sonic evaluation: I use my Ibanez through a zoom gfx-5 and into a marshall mg50. i was ferli happy with my setup before i got my motherbucker, as the ibanez wasnt toop bad as far as stock pikups go, but the motherbucker has jst shown me how nieve i was, lol. this pikup is so powerful and harmonics jst scream from it. excellent for a cutting distortion like children of bodom/battery style metallica. i also play alot of muse, and as ther frontman uses one this is how i discovered it. it is excellent for playing the type of stuff they do, obivously, lol.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: not great for clean playing. thas y i got it coil tapped, so that wen i tap it it gives the two coils nearest the bridge so sounds better for clean. also gives a nice hot rodded strat sound wen distorted
Overall Rating
:9
Comments: i am currently building a guitar and i am probably putting a motherbucker in that. the only reason i would considering putting a different pickup in the guitar im making would be to give myself more varation of sound. somthin like a burstbucker for a nice LP sound or the other end of the spectrum a dimebucker or EMG active set. my only regret with this is that i wish i had put a rotary pot in my guitar insted of a puch pull tone nob, so i could have more versatility, but it was reli feasible as i didnt hav space in my guitar as i alredi had a kill swtich and didnt wana go routing out extra space.

Sound
:No Opinion
Perceived output level: MK1 LOUDEST EVER, Mk2 Still powerful but with more dynamics. Tone: Power, Punch and definition, Sonic evaluation: Various Amps, Including Mesa BoogieHeartbreaker, Laney Chromezone and Lc30, Marshall JCM800 Non MAsterVolume and fender pro-sonic.
The Mk1 Motherbucker is in a Heartfiled Talon 4, and the Mk2 is in My Jem7Bsb.
As far as I know, I am the person responsible for the exisyence of both these pickups.
During the period when Kent was Negotiating the factory mass production of his "sky": range , I contacted him with a view to manufacture of the Mk1, to my specs.
The Mk1 is essentially , as noted by previous poster, 2 Hot rail, single coil sized humbuckers squeezed into a normal sized Humbucker assembly . As each Pickup is 4 wire, this means an 8 wire device, that can be "interesting" to hook up if you dont know your way around pickups with confidence.....
I fitted the Mk1 Prototype to a Heartfield Talon 4, (Designed by Fender, Built By Ibanez.... the origin of the all access neck joint), And addeda Selectron rotary Switch Between the Volume and tone controls on the Talon, So that it looks like juysta secong tone control..... This switch isa variable configuration design, whereby you drop position pins in , at up to 12 locations, to define how many contacts are switched by position change.
My design used 4 positions, to give the following
Position 1) Single coil blade nearest Bridge. thin tele/strat esque sound, REALLY cutting
Position 2) Series wiredSingle Hotrail humbucker (nearest Bridge) resulting in std "Hot rodded" strat sound
Position 3) 2 Humbuckers, Individually series wired, but in Parrallel together ...resulting in a fairly normal "hot" humbucking sound
Position 4) ALL 4 COILS in series AWESOME!!!>>>>>Screaming lead and HUGE rhythm Sound. Lacking some dynamic though...... Thus leading to the development of Mk2.
MK2
this is 2 COOL RAILS in one unit.
Same wiring potential as MK1, but with a touch more dynamic and subtlety.... even at ultimate shred....
This is fitted in My Jem7bsb, but the wiring is done through a push/push Tone pot/switch combo....
Only two p[ositions , and they are as per positions 3 and 4 on the mk1 description, but leaves a little more "feel" and dynamic in the tonality and playing feel.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Mostly Rock, but Blues, Jazz, Classical , whatever someone pays me for!
Overall Rating
:10
Comments: As Co-designer.... I am admittedly a little biased....
;-)
BUT, the MK1 is great fopr pure shred heads..... however the Mk2 with dual coolrails is just a little mnore refined, yet retains enough power to stun the competition at 100 paces.
There is NO better pickup for Rock/Metal Lead and rhythm work.
I've tried EVERYTHING...... (I didm used to own a guitar shop!!)
this is the Muttz nuttz....
Foir other jobs, other pick ups may well be better suited, but as an all round Versatile Powerhouse, the Mk2 is Sex with strings on!
(Being in the Jem might help of course....;-)
Many Many thanks to Kent Armstrong for his work in development and prototyping.
even more thanks To Dan for raising such a Great bloke!
And to Sam Locke of "Sam's Guitars" and "The other guitar Shop" Bangor, North Wales, UK for introducing Us.
