Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Normal.
Tone: Balanced, crisp, sweet, clear, dynamic.
Sonic evaluation: Bill Nash 52 telecaster into either a Fender Vibroverb re-issue or Mesa Boogie 22+, both used for their clean sounds with whatever pedal I need for distortion. I was very disappointed with the SD pick-ups that came with the guitar and straight away I knew they had to be binned. Finally after checking out various pick-up manufacturers I contacted Owen and discussed the tone requirements that I was looking for which was basically a vintage tele sound. With the new pick-ups in place, the change in the tonal characteristics of my guitar was amazing. These pick-ups are very articulate, beautifully clear and open without a hint of harshness. I still wasn't happy with the colouration of the neck pick-up (too dark for me, I like a bright neck pick-up), and immediately contacted Owen with the request that he should remove the cover and rewind the pick-up for a brighter sound. This being done, I now have a tele neck pick-up that sounds similar but not quite stratish and is just heaven for playing blues. While I was at it, I also sent the SD neck pick-up for rewinding but this was wound using strat wire and should be a little brighter, but I haven't tested this yet.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play mostly blues/rock based music. These pick-ups cover these sounds easily and probably everything above and beyond.
Overall Rating
:
10
Comments: I have been playing for a very long time, nearly 30 years on and off. Other guitars that I own are G&L ASAT, ESP Tele (400 series), Tokai Strat and various acoustics. These pick-ups are seriously good (for sound and value). Owen is great at what he does and tries in every way to help you find what your looking for. Before wasting your money on other pick-up replacements, talk to Owen, you won't regret it.
