7.8K I think

Instrument
:
Telecaster 69 reissue mahogany thinline.
Position: bridge
Replaced: stock Fender pickup
Artists: Jerry Donahue duh...
Reason: wanted fatter bridge tone
Sound
:
6
Output: hotter than stock
Amps: Orange rockerverb 50 combo
Effects: Electroharmonix deluxe memory man delay
Style: rock, country, punk, blues, worship, southern rock
It does southern rock best as well as blues... it sucks at rock, punk and worship.
I can describe this pickup as lacking balls... low end punch due to the alnico 2 rods for they are weak compared to alnico 5... the stock had more punch, but wasn't as smooth as the Donahue. However, the donahue is too smooth overdriven... it lacks (punch) strength and comes across as blurry and flat... it has way too much upper mids... and the highs aren't very sizzley or interesting overdriven...
This pickup however, does shine clean... it chimes very well... I was able to produce an almost rickenbacker jangle 'Byrds' type tone...
So overdriven it lackes low end punch, power and presence due to alnico 2 rods... flat - way too much mid to upper mids... rating 3
Clean - it works better... rating 7

If it was destoyed or stolen I would throw a small party and get something else ASAP!
In fact I am thinking of the Dimarzio pre b1, Fralin 7% overwound blues special or something crazy like a Tone Zone T due to the great reviews... one guy said he doesn't like the full humbucker version but likes the Tele version... I didn't like the full version of the Tone Zone either - too muddy when played clean.

Pickup features: Passive single coil
Impedence or other specs: D.C. Resistance 7.37K, Resonant Peak 6.63khz
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Fender American Nashville B-Bender Telecaster
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Stock American Standard model
Other pickups on guitar: Neck, American Standard Tele Neck model; Middle, Fender Texas Special Strat model
Artists using this pickup: Jerry Donahue and me, but not the guy I bought it from... ;^)
You musical style(s): Country, Jazz, Blues, Rock...
Reason for pickup change: The stock pickup was decent; but I wanted a smoother midrange and more sustain.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: This pickup is hotter than the stock; but it's a Vintage model. It's just a bit overwound. I had to do some height adjustments to all three pickups to balance them. It's great now.
Tone: Smooth, sparkly highs and smooth mids. It doesn't sound barky to me at all; as some people have said.
Sonic evaluation: I stated my guitar at the beginning. My amp consists of a Roland BC-30 and a Fender 59 RI Bassman. I use a BOSS ME-30 for some light effects. I usually go straight through the Bassman.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play Tele-spankin country and Blues. I spank the Tele in my Blues as well. I think this pickup does an excellent job covering all styles except Thrash or the like.

Comments: If someone stole the pickup out of my guitar - well, apparently they needed it pretty bad. On the other hand, if they stole the guitar - it's covered as well as all after-market customizations done by my Fender-authorized tech.
I have been playing over 20 years. I have a Roland BC-30 (which is what I mostly use), a Fender Blues Jr, & a 59 RI Bassman. I use a BOSS ME-30 multi-effects unit. My guitars are a Fender American Nashville B-Bender Telecaster and a Les Paul Std plus with a set of gold-covered Seymour Duncan 59's.
I love the twang, sparkle, & smoothness of the pickup. What I dont like is the funky rewiring you have to do with Seymour Duncans; sometimes. I installed my Les Paul's 59's with no sweat. This is due, in part, to Fender's wiring config, I had to clip the little wire that connects to the copper-plated bottom plate and solder the hot wire to the bottom plate and connect the pickup's ground wire to the guitar's hot connection. I wired it standard first and was out of phase. I could have rewired the middle and neck positions; but that would've meant clipping the neck pickup's little connection to the chrome cover. I have ruined many a Tele neck pickup by trying this. It was just easier to deal with the bridge pickup.

Model of guitar or bass: Squire Telecaster Fat Pro-Tone
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Stock P/U.
Other pickups on guitar: Humbucker at the neck
Artists using this pickup: Me and Jerry
You musical style(s): Rock/Blues
Reason for pickup change: The standard was a good Alnico Pro, but not twangy enough, and without sustain.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: I think that my tele never sounded so good, this pick up features an incredible clean sound, deep, sweet and with an incredible sustain. I would by again and again.
Tone: Through my Peavey Classic 30 Watts it sound amazing, makes the cabinet definitely screams. Mixed with the very nice neck humbucker, this Jerry Donahue assumes a warmer sound delivered only by the later SRV. i
Sonic evaluation: As I've already sayd I use a Telecaster Squire (don't let the name squire take over you, try this babe!) Fat Pro Tone, through a Peavey Classic Tube 30 Watts, I also have a VOX, and a Daddy-O by Danelectro, everything you need to play the right gig. I also own a Fender Stratocaster 1961 Red Fiesta reissue, and a Double cut 1959 Danelectro reissue, but this new pick up, will keep me busy with the Tele for a while!
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Not Heavy Metal nor Alternative, but good'ol bloody BLUES. (SRV R.I.P)

Comments: I would buy this pick up again. If you like Keith Richard's sound this is the pick up that you were looking for, great value, great thing to own, too bad that Fender cannot manufacture this pick up (unless you are one of those super lucky ones to own one of those 1959 Telecaster from which this pick up was inspired!)

Model of guitar or bass: MIJ foto flame Telecaster
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Stock p/u
Other pickups on guitar: Stock neck pickup (but not for much longer...)
Artists using this pickup: JD I guess!
You musical style(s): Blues, classic Rock.
Reason for pickup change: Original pickups are higly microphonic & generally nasty.
Sound
:

Perceived output level: Very much higher output than the stock pickup.
Tone: Mid-rangey. Bloody nice!
Sonic evaluation: This pickup had turned the cheapy FF Tele into a fire-breather. It sounds excellent through my TS-5/Blues Deluxe and through my Trace Elliot Tramp. I cannot pick the guitar up now without playing "Since I've been loving you" or "in a Broken Dream". Does that give you and idea of the sonic territory we're in here?
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Excellent blues & 70's rock pickup.

Comments: I would definately buy this pickup again. My only problem with it is that it makes the neck pickup sound completely wimpy, and I can't source a replacement for that one locally!

Reason for pickup change: The MIJ Tele pickups are microphonic in the extreme and basically suck.
Sound

Perceived output level: About the same as a Lindy Fralin
Tone: Round and clear but all "Tele
Sonic evaluation: I was looking for a pickup toat was the sonic equal of a Lindy Fralin in another guitar I'm afraid to gig with any more. I tried an Antiquity and the tone was great but it was very microphonic. I had been interested in the Donahue model for a while and the new guitar gave me an excuse to try it out. I had the neck pickup in a box waiting to go. This pickup sings to me. The middle position us completely usable but when you need to go to the bridge pickup to take a solo to the next level or put some twang into your rhythm playing, this pickup does it on demand! Using a dynacomp for a little fuzz, it's very aggressive. Nice pickup. I play it through a pair of Fender Pro Juniors at most club gigs and a Supro Thunderbolt at larger gigs.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: For blues or country, the only thing I've played that I liked as much were the Fralins but the JD was much more affordable. This pickup isn't suitable for thrash rock or metal.

Comments: If this pickup were lost or stolen, I'd replace it with the same. I've been playing 34 years and I own four Teles, all ave different pickups and different duties but this will be a main guitar for standard tuning playing. This pickup has *that sound* (Like the Fralin) for blues. I'm very happy.

Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: American Standard Strat
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Fender Texas Special bridge
Other pickups on guitar: Duncan Alnico II Strat Staggred single coils
Artists using this pickup: Jerry Donahue I guess
You musical style(s): Blues rock, Hendrix, Dead
Reason for pickup change: Texas Specials were too trebly and biting
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: more than the Texas Special bridge but less than a stock Tele bridge
Tone: Warm and balanced with as bit of sweet fuzz in the midrange
Sonic evaluation: I'm playing an abused 95 American Standard Strat through an early 90's Crate 60 watt solid state. Though this pickup was intended for a Tele, it sounds great in a Strat (too bad I had to gouge the pickguard to make it fit). This pickup is clear, sweet sounding, and has excellent sustain despite my tone-eating tremolo. It retains all the bite of a Tele. It has excellent string to string balance and complements Duncan Alnico II Strat sound and output at neck in middle very well. The bridge/neck combo is floaty in the middle range almost underwater. The bridge/middle combo is rich w/ clarity and really cool with a bit of flanging. The sound is very open, and captures every subtle expression. Sorry I don't have a Tele to judge it by.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Great for blues or jazz, good with overdrive or fuzz. Not good for metal

Comments: Duncan advertises the Jerry Donahue model to be designed to have the sound of an extraordinarily sweet sounding 52 Tele pickup. Alnico II magnets exert less pull on the strings so output is decreased in trade for treble decrease and fuller sound. The advertsing is right on. I have no complaints, this pickup delivers what it promises, even if it is intended for a non-tremolo guitar. I would definitely buy it again and recommend it. Seymour and Jerry's signatures on the plate are pretty cool too..huh,huh.
