Output very hot. I used it with a Peavey Classic 20, and a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Overall I thought the tone was a little too compressed and midrange???y. It drives the amp hard. I had to lower the pickup alot and even then it was still wasn't quite enough to offset the output. Distorted leads are the only thing I think you could use this pickup for... The cleans were unattractive???harsh, strident mid to upper mid range tone.

Been playing 30 years. Got into changing pickups recently... enjoying the learning process and experimentation. I have a bunch of guitars, Gibsons, Fenders, Univox, Agile, etc...
I got the Agile AL 3100 to experiment with pickups. Have tried the SD A2pro and the SD Jazz and the JB so far.
In my opinion, the JB doesn't sound good in a LP guitar. It emphasizes the wrong frequencies. It would sound better in a bright, thin guitar. I'm going to replace it with something else...

Ibanez Prestige S 1625 FB (figured Bubinga). Mahogany body with Bubinga top. Maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. Bridge position. I'm replacing the stock QM 2 humbucker. I also replaced the stock QM 1 neck humbucker with a Duncan '59 four conductor. I changed them after being the original owner for about five years (purchased in either late '04 or early '05) because although I mostly play heavier rock and love high gain distortion, and the QM's are actually pretty good at that, I was ready for something with more versatility. The QM's sounded pretty decent for stock pickups, but they were both a bit on the muddy side, due in part to their high output, and the neck pickup was terrible for rhythm work when distorted.

As I mentioned, the stock QM 2 was pretty high output. I scoured the Ibanez forum and other forums as well as emailing Ibanez themselves, and could not get any specs on the QM's as far as DC resistance, or anything else for that matter (DC resistance is NOT the only thing that determines output). I do know that the QM 2 bridge pickup is a ceramic magnet pickup. In any event, it's pretty hot. The JB is not super hot, but I'm finding that if you have the right amp, the JB is plenty hot enough. Super hot pickups aren't as articulate. The tone of the JB, to my ears, definitely cuts through a mix well, because of it's midrange. I agree with other reviews stating that it has a spike somewhere in the midrange. To me it sounds good because it CUTS through a live mix. I'm also a recording engineer and operate a home project studio, and when recording I do find myself EQ'ing some of that out for rhythm work, but for leads it's perfect. Tone: Bass is accounted for, and you get a decent 'chug, chug, chug', when palm muting, but it doesn't sound 'woofy', as a pickup often does that is thick in the bass. The mids have been covered. The highs - I had a little trouble with the highs at first, but I learned to dial my tone stack on my amps in to accomodate the new p'ups, and they are very present and articulate, yet not piercing. It should be noted that my Ibanez's stock electronics come equipped with the treble bleed cap on the volume control. I found when I rolled the volume off on the JB with that cap in place, it sounded weak and thin, and not very warm. So, I took the treble bleed cap out (which, by the way, sounded GREAT with the QM's), and that warmed it up quite nicely when the volume is rolled off. I would not recommend a treble bleed cap if you're using a JB. If you only have one volume and you are installing or already have a '59 in the neck, I haven't found this to be much of a problem. The '59 isn't has hot as the JB, and I don't have to roll my volume back as far to get the '59 to clean up, so it hasn't been a problem for me. Also, I do play clean sometimes, and the circuitry in my Ibanez is a bit strange. Although it splits the coil in one position, it also splits the neck - it splits both of them and one coil from each is turned on. I am getting some nice, spanky, nasally sounds in that position, and when in full humbucker while playing clean, it has a lot of bite to it. For certain styles, you're probably going to need to roll the tone knob down a bit. I give this an 8 only because it is a refreshing change of tone from the QM's, and I'm very happy with it, but it isn't as hot as I was expecting, which is due largely to the fact that I didn't realize how hot my QM was (which in turn is due largely to the fact that I couldn't find any specs on it).

If it was destroyed or stolen, that would most likely mean that they have the rest of my guitar with it. Before I thought about replacing pickups, I would be asking everyone who I knew may have been in the vicinity of where I last left my guitar if they had seen anything. If I found the culprit, I would be notifying the authorities BEFORE I confronted the culprit, bust them, and either get my guitar back, or get some money for not the street value of it, but for the intrinsic value, which is A LOT. If they didn't want to pony up the dough, I would then pursue other alternatives. As far as the pickup goes, this is a tricky question. Here's the deal: the JB is a screamer - it sounds great dirty, and sounds pretty good clean, and I would probably buy it again - only because I don't have a ton of money to go out and try many different pickups and re-sell the one's I didn't like. Sort of like, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." So, yeah, rather than experiment, I would probably stick with this. What do I love about it? I love it for distorted soloing, as well as rhythm work - I'm talking about stuff that's influenced by the likes of Ratt, Steve Vai, Motley Crue, Joe Satriani, Poison, Van Halen, Skid Row, White Lion, etc. That sort of stuff - it excels at that, and that's what I play a lot of. What I DON'T like about it, is it 'sounds' really hot when it's clean - it isn't "shrill" exactly, but it definitely cuts a bit much for my taste when clean, hence why you will probably be rolling down the tone control (or the volume for that matter, that cuts some of the treble too unless you have that treble bleed cap). It's a pretty cool pickup. Yes, I did compare this to other products. I work at a famous music store, which shall remain nameless at this time, but I will tell you that it isn't Guitar Center, Sam Ash, or Musicians Friend. We only have one location, but we are pretty well known. That being said, I have access to many different guitars, with many different pickups. I did actually drop in a John Suhr DSV Plus in the bridge to try out, and I 'almost' left it in - it sounded REALLY good. It just wasn't quite hot enough for me. It's DC resistance was a little over 10Kohms I believe. I realize that different body woods and neck woods affect the tone. Getting that out of the way, I tried a bunch of different guitars with different Dimarzio's, Duncan's, and Gibson pickups. The Charvel San Dimas comes available with the same pickups I bought - the JB and the '59. I tried many guitars through many amps, and that Charvel with these pickups in it sounded the best to my ears. My Ibanez IS Mahogany, but it's an S, so it's very thin. Although it's Mahogany, it isn't quite as thick sounding as a Les Paul. Basically, some of my associates agreed that they sounded better in my S than it did in the Charvels - more articulate, more attack, 'sharper', whatever you want to call it. More top end/treble response too, which accounts for some of the articulation. So is this 'that sound' that I was looking for? Yes. I play weekly at my church - and the sound engineers mentioned how they always had to boost my mids in the mix to get me to punch through. Now they don't have to, the pickup punches through the mix by itself. We mix at about 90dB or so, so pretty loud, and we mic the amp with an AKG C414. I love my new sound.

It is installed in a Schecter C-1 Plus in the bridge position. I am replacing the stock SD Designed pickups. The other pickup on the guitar is a slightly overwound BG Bucker neck pickup. I changed the pickups because I was not satisfied with the stock pickups.

PLEASE READ...I always liked the tone of the JB, but to my ears neither the Jazz nor the '59 was mated properly to the JB's tone, so I never used it. I had a JB I had taken out of a Schecter Blackjack and I had a set of slightly overwound set BG Buckers so I decided to try the BG Bucker neck with the JB.....BOY AM I GLAD I DID! The slightly over wound BG Bucker's neck tone mated perfectly to the JB delivering one awesome set of hard rockin' pickups capable of delivering a wide range of really great tones. The Bucker neck was only $70.00 to boot for a really nice hand wound pickup.

With the slightly overwound BG Bucker in the neck, the JB becomes that much more wonderful in the bridge. Been playin' for 20 years. I own some of the best gear in the world. This set, in the Schecter Plus delivers hard! Way drool worthy!

Installed this in an Agile LP-2500 Les Paul copy in the bridge position to replace the original no-name 'bucker, which was okay sounding, but lacked low end, and lacked definition. The neck pickup is still the original installed by Agile, which sounds okay, also. Soon to be replaced by a PAF in the neck.

As for the sound of the JB, I think it's safe to say that the JB is basically a hotter-wound PAF with a bit more high-end. Output is medium-hot, enough to mildly distort any tube amp I put it through when hit hard. Emphasis is on the upper mids and highs, but these frequencies are smooth and sweet, not harsh and icy. The first time I used a JB in a guitar was 1987, and I really don't notice any difference in a modern version with, of course, taking into account the type of guitar and wood. I play classic rock and the JB is great for that type of music. I wouldn't play country or jazz with this pickup, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone was able to do so wonderfully. I will definately stick with this pickup until I get a wild hair, then who knows?

Call me an old fart, but the Triple Rectifier/Krank undefined wall of mush fuzz doesn't do much for me, all you hear is characterless distortion. I like smooth distortion that allows you to hear the amp, the guitar, the pickup, the strings. Ten tons of gain and mud don't express your playing as much as muddy it up; but, to each his own. If that's your idea of sonic nirvana, have at it. If your ideal tone sounds similar to a bulldozer running over an amp that is shorting out, I'm guessing the JB ain't your pickup. For me, it works very well.

What type of music you play will determine how you perceive it's output level. If you play cleaner stuff like blues and jazz then this is a scorcher! if you play rock/hardrock/fusion you will find it pretty hot but tame-able. If you play metal you will find it warm but well punctuated. Iam a 14 year veteran to electric guitar. I have tried almost everything (That I could get my hands on!)Let me tell you: I absolutely LOVE this pickup! I've played active EMG's, Evolutions, Breeds, PAF's, Bill Lawrence L500XL's, you name it, All of which are great great pickups. The only problem they csn present is that they are more specialized for certain genres of music. The JB may not be able to cover all the bases, but it will cover most!! No kidding, I am not even hyping this up! At the moment I play in a band that covers stuff ranging from pop-rock to metal and this pickup nails it all no sweat. It has a nice vocal midrange but the vocal-like quality is more subtle than the dimarzio pickups tend to be. I don't know what else to tell you....this is a versatile little screamer and unless you need something more specialized, this IS the pickup for you that want the broadest and best spectrum of great tone.

I wanted a high-output pickup that would match the Duncan Designed's output,but give me much better clarity and punch.

The output was lower than the Duncan Designed. All of a sudden I had to crank the distortion up on all my settings and pedals. The tone was very mid-rangey, not at all balanced. If you were to go "awwwww", that is it. Its a horible mid range sqwak to it. Its not pleasant. I play rock, hard rock, metal and some blues. I don't know what position is suitable for, but SD should get rid of it from their lineup.

I will never buy this pickup again or recommend it. Its just not what people want from a humbucker. You want a humbucker to be warm, punchy, powerful and clear. You get punchy and powerful, but not warm and clear. The mid frequencies that have been accentuated by this pickup are really harsh. The low notes get all muddy and the treble is very harsh and brittle. Seriously I was disappointed from the minute I put it in and tried it out. Just stuck it out because I was too lazy to change back.
Folks, there are PLENTY of other options from SD and DiMarzio, etc...that will hit the mark. The JB is way off, probably no matter WHAT music you play. I now have a DiMarzio Super Distortion and its everything I want in a bridge pickup. Powerful... drives my amp easily. Clear..I can actually play a open G chord with the distortion up all the way and hear every note clearly.

Gibson Les paul, swamp ash body, ebony fret board (so a fairly bright set of woods), plus its got that warm les paul sounds.
I have the JB in the bridge and a custom wound p-90 to balance with it in the neck.
I upgraded from the stock pickups a couple of years ago becuase they were fairly generic sounding and very middy. I would reccomend an alnico V pickup over an alnico II in a les paul as I think you need the brightness.

Reasonable output. I wouldn't say high but more than a PAF. (this is in relation to how it sounds not its specs).
I use it through a number of effects, either a turbo rat or a compressor into blues driver for my main drive tones. This is pushing a fender hot rod with a celestion speaker.
The tone is nice and crunchy. Theres alot of treble and mid tones but its not unbalanced. I couldn't see this working in a neck position but as a lead pickup its perfect.
I use this guitar for heavy blues, some jazz, heavy country, and of course abit of rock. I think it could cope with metal if I wanted it too (I have the occassional muse/ratm moment but thats as far as I dip into metal). I wouldn't reccomend this pup to a metal purist but it'l cope if you want to go that way occasionally.
This is a lead pickup, I wouldn't recommend it for most rythm styles. It would cope but other pups would be better.

THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT. THIS PUP IS VERY DEPENDANT ON HEIGHT. TOO HIGH AND IT GETS MUDDY AND HARSH. BACK IT OFF, SET IT QUITE LOW AND THEN RAISE THE POLE PIECES.
I set the bass side slightly lower. Then raise the pole pieces about 5mm and then adjust with the guitar plugged in to get good string balance and definition. I find that the high E needs the most help, the G the least and I like to raise the low E and A to give my chords some oomph. I think you need to experiment though. I was given this pickup from a mate who hated it, once I'de set it up properly he wanted it back but I wasn't budging!
It really makes a hige difference. On all pickups its important but the JB seems more sensitive than most.

I installed this JB in the bridge position of a mahogany Ibanez RG with a maple top and maple/rosewood neck and a matching SD Jazz in the neck position.
These replaced the stock Ibanez pickups.

The JB, to my ears, has a medium-high output level, good for overdriven sounds. I've used it with my Marshall DSL100, Peavey 5150 and ADA MP-1 all going into a 2x12 cab with G12H30's or a 4x12 cab with the same.
I play main rock/hard rock and metal. The JB is definitely a good match for any of these types of music. Not too bassy or trebly with a nice little midrange bump that works for that style of music. Though I always felt that the JB had a fuzziness to it that I didn't really get into.
Though I would recommend this pickup for anyone into the same kind of music, it was not for me. I wanted something a little more percussive and transparent, with less of a voicing.

I would not buy it again, but that is only because I never bonded with the tone much. It is a good pickup, just not for me.
I've been playing professionally and semi-professionally for over twenty years. I've probably owned something from almost every pickup company going. I mainly play an Ibanez for its versatility and flat neck, but I also own a Strat and Ernie Ball/Musicman Axis.
I loved the JB's midrange drive and it's rock tone, but didn't like the fuzziness. I found it a little too vocal and voiced. I prefer something more transparent. It should be noted that I did keep the Jazz in the neck position. I do like that pickup for that position and my style.
I've tried another brand I've been neglecting for years, and am so glad I did. It is the pickup for me, but I'm not saying what it is, I'd like to keep it to myself. ;) The Duncan JB is a good pickup regardless of my personal preference. It is kind of generic sounding though, which is another reason I didn't keep it in.

amazing! i can how some of the uneducated beginer players on here can make negative comments about it so lets address these.
#1- too much treble- nah, it has more presence. it sounds very alive and loud. like an amp through a bbe.
#2- not enough bass- nah, it has bass, it just doesnt have the mud that other high gain pick ups have so it can confuse and idiot really quickly. adjust your amps treble kid! bass isnt the farting noise your cheap amp makes due to muddy tone.
the truth- this pick up is for real players that have a clue. it isnt generic and should not be played by generic beginers that are using entry level jap guitars made of plywood. this pick up will make your tone come alive. there is a reason why this is the most popular humbucking pick up made today. pleanty of gain, smooth even tone with just the right growl and bite. bright alive sound, love it!

First thing I noticed was the harmonics that seem to jump off the strings. The pickups look tight with their covers. Am running the Schecter into a Mesa Studio Pre, which runs into an older model Mesa 50/50. Using a Roadster 1X12 cab right now. Metal is my music of choice, but I fool around with Rock, Blues, and some Funk. This pickup works quite well for any of those applications. The output is not super hot, but it's what I'd call very alive!

There's nothing that I hate about them, and there's nothing I'd change about them. With the right equipment, I really believe you can get damn near any genre you want with them - including metal.

Lately, I have used the JB in the bridge position of a Jackson Dinky DK2 (came stock) and of an Ibanez Paul Gilbert model PGM500. But a few years back, I have used the JB in a plethora of other guitars. I've been playing the JB for 10 years now.

The output level is high. I'd say maybe a touch less than a Dimarzio Tone-Zone, a tiny bit more than a Duncan Full Shred, about the same as a Duncan Custom. If I were to put a Dimarzio output mV number on it, I'd say around 360 mV. However, the pickup doesn't "feel" high output, as its mids are recessed and most of the power is concentrated in the treble and bass ends.
The tone of the JB is very particular for a humbucking pickup.
It has sucked out mids, flabby thick bass and searing treble, with some nice presence. The absence of mids make it hard to cut through many dense mixes. Most of the time, the attack will cut through, but not the note itself. The attack of this pickup is very special and sounds really "quacky", "squashy" or "underwatery" as I like to call it. The attack sounds just like Marty Friedman's lead tone on Rust In Peace. Indeed, I think this pickup sounds just like Marty's lead tone on RIP and most of Warren DeMartini's lead tones on just about any 80's RATT albums.
For rhythm playing this pickup is totally untight under heavy gain and is flabby. In my opinion, this pickup is a lead player's wet dream and a rhythm player's nightmare. I wouldn't record a tight rhythm guitar with this pickup unless I have no choice. Of course, the argument here is Dave Mustaine and many other players that used the JB. So yeah, it can be worked out, but it wouldn't be my first choice for tight rhythm (I recommend the Duncan Distortion for that!)
I play instrumental high-gain shred guitar (80's like), mostly leads and few rhythms.
I have used the JB in the neck some years ago and found it much too muddy to be useable. I recommend it in the bridge position.
The JB sounds good for leads, it has a nice searing tone. It feels really "elastic" when playing fast intricate line. The attack is immediate, but the note take a while to bloom. Consequently, the notes tend to "Burn" and change into an harmonic galore. The Dimarzio Tone-Zone also makes the notes "burn" but they just don't feel as elastic as with the JB. The JB is really thick and "slow" on the notes and really swift on the initial attack. This is mainly a result of having the mids really recessed.

The JB is a very good lead pickup for when I need that "elastic" feel. It has a particular tone that cannot satisfy everyone, but once in a while it's really pleasing to play such a "rubbery" pickup.
The JB is definitely at its best when playing high-gain 80's style shreddy leads in the studio, where the "lack of cut through" can be taken care of.
Overall, the JB is a good pickup, has a unique tone and feels like no other pickup that I know of.

I bought a PRS Santana SE last year. It's one of their Korean made models. Mahogany body; rosewood fretboard, set in neck. I put the JB in the bridge, and the Jazz in the neck (apparently Seymours favorite combo). Again, I am new , and this was (is) the only guitar I ever played. Picked up and started playing 14 months ago. I use a little Roland Microcube practice amp. Didn't take too long to figure out that when on the distortion setting, the tone got real muddy real quick. Also, although the soloing was crisp and clear ( the guitar actually does reproduce the Santana sound pretty good). Something was definitely lacking, especially on the very high notes. I use 9 guage for easier to play, but have been putting a 10 on the high E to try and get more beef.

I immediately noticed a much stronger output. The technician also lowered the action on the SE. The combination of the pickups and lowered action allow for MUCH LESS effort to get more sound. Also very interesting, I can get more subtle shadings with the pickups. Pardon my lack of experience/perspective here, but without a doubt, the sound is much richer and fuller than with the stock pickups. Power chords on Rolling stones stuff are fuller, and on AC/DC with some distortion, everything is several notches clearer. Santana solo's sing now.

I have JB's installed into my OLP MM1 and also in a BC Rich Avenge SOB all in the bridge position. I also have another OLP MM1 with a Tonezone and a Peavey Wolfgang with Eddie's Pickups. The JB's sound is very clear and have lots of punch, midrange and fullness. I tested my JBs out in comparison to my other guitars. The JB and the Tonezone are very similar but the JB had more clarity while doing my a/b comparison. The JB was nearly identical to the pickup in my EVH Wolfgang. I've been using Duncan JB's since 1989 and I love 'em. My favorite sounding pickup of all time. I was on an EMG kick for a while but always end up going back to the JB. These are moderate to high output and remain clear and punchy. High output stuff tends to muddy my signal as I'm using high gain 5150 III heads.

What's the output level like? Its stronger than a tradicional PAF but not too much. Its not a metalhead pickup as I feared. Dont be impressed about the 16K resistance, it doesnt mean output. Its really sweet and not at all an agressive pick.
What amps and effects are you using it with? 50w Brazilian 60s and 70s 6L6 Fender based tube amps (Palmer and Giannini) and trash Meteoro and Marshall solid satate amps. + Yamaha Over Drive OD10 (80s OD) and Plan-9 68 Classic Fuzz Si (BC108 Fuzz Face clone).
Tone: very well defined and balanced, now my guitar shines in band contexts. Its not trebly at all, and souns fantastic in my Special Faded. The 490T lacked bass, and the first thing I realized was the beautiful mid and bass blends offered by this JBJ. The 490T was microfonic and kinda thin, while the JBJ is fat and strong. Even with crap amps it does the job but with good tube amps it really shines. I am impressed with the beautiful feedbacks it creates. I??ve only heard these kind of feedbacks with P-90s before.
What style of music do you play? I play since 1984. Now I??m in an Indy-punk-psycho Brazilian band named Gooks. I also like to play jazz & blues.
For which positions is this pickup (un)suitable? The best thing about this pickup is that its higher output doesnt mean DEBAR, i.e. distorting everything beyound all recognition. The sound is really well defined, beutifull and harmonically rich. Its an extremelly versatile pickup. I recommend it to every kind of music, except for mad Invader metal maniacs.
For which positions is this pickup unsuitable? Neck.

If it was destroyed or stolen, would you buy it again or get something else? Yes, I??m buying another JBJ as a backup right now. Maybe I??ll be forced to buy a Flying V for it if the pickup feels too lonely.

It??s the best pickup I??ve ever played with, it made me rediscover humbuckers after some years playing mainly with P90s. I only would like to know if the present JB is so good as this damn good 80s JBJ.

right now I have this pickup in my favourite guitar - Ibanez S470. First I replaced the stock Infinity pickup with a Dimarzio from Ibanez prestige (they're made as IBZ/Dimarzio pickups. This one was made just like the Tone Zone), but then I replaced it with this Duncan JB.
Before I got it in one of my Les Pauls.

I must say that since I installed this pickup in my Ibanez it doesn't sound like an Ibanez at all (you can't expect VAI's or Satriani's tone from it - Dimarzios are made for that reason :D).
The output is Hot! The tone is balanced, but the first impression can be not as good as the pickup actually is, because I had a feeling that it lacks bass. I have tried a lot of the greatest bridge pickups for distortion and heavy music styles - I have to say that this one is definitely for you, If you're looking for a really heavy tone.
I Play a lot of different styles, but mostly something heavy, so I know what I need to play metal.

If it was stolen or lost I would definitely buy it again.
When I first got the JB, I thought that it is not as heavy as I want, so I traded it to the SD Invader (sh-8), because I thought if Lamb Of God are playing with these, They can't be bad pickups. But I mistaken- the sh-8 was the worst pickup for distortion I have ever played. It was so muddy - unplayable!
I have tried a lot of pickups (I make guitars myself, so I have to try a lot of gear to find the best combination for every instrument) so far, I also have emg's in 2 of my guitars (one is Les Paul and the other one is custom made ESP ex series style guitar) And I can say that the JB is the greatest pickup for bridge position I've ever played. It produces nice clear tone comparing to Duncan Sh-6 (distortion) which also is too muddy for playing metal. The Emg 81 is a good pickup too, but it gives a LOT of extra noise while playing guitar. Bill Lawrence 500 (Dimebag used to use this before switching to Seymour duncan) is also great, but the JB still is the best one for me.
It is very good for power chords and also for solos. The pinched-harmonics are great on it.
But remember - there is always a risk that you wouldn't like it, so try to test it for a while, before buying one.

SOUND: Organic. JB is not the hottest HB, but hot enough. More importantly, it has the Tone. Very transparent and eq balanced. Tight bass, sweet but sharp mids, glassy highs. It sings in lead work. Nice mid-honk.
Great for open cords, palm muting, riffs, harmonics and solos. Cuts through the mix very good. Works great in medium to high gain applications. It stays transparent and clear even in the highest gain settings and fastest soloing. Noise free in high gain.
I don???t play clean on the bridge position, but sounds ok splited with the middle strat pickup.
What style of music do you play? Is this a good match?
If you like Steve Stevens, EVH, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine, Steve Lukather and their guitar tones, you won???t go wrong with JB. It sounds just like a guitar should sound.
Just remember to make the right choice between SH4 and TB4 concerning string spacing and bridge dimensions. SD:??? TB4 is designed for wider string spacing in the bridge position: 2.070?????? or 52,6mm???

I installed this piece of beauty in the bridge position of my Ibanez RG2EX1, basswood body with a fixed bridge, very simple and to the point. Some say that this pup sounds like trash in a basswood axe, personally I think thats bull****. I am replacing a number of pups, I tried a Bill Lawrence L500L, a Dimarzio Air Norton and a Dimarzio Drop Sonic before I found the all singing, all dancing crap of the world with the JB, this is hands down the best pickup I have found, but JB's are a love or hate pup, I happen to love it, sweet harmonics and just enough growl to suit my style, absolutely awesome.
I originally hated Duncans as I had tried an Invader a long time ago and it was a piece of ****. But Stephen Carpenter of the Deftones used a JB until after White Pony so I decided to give one a shot, damn am I happy I did! I found all the others to be good in their own way, the Lawrence was balls out insane, but too much for my humble hands, I'll let the Gods like Dime and Nuno handle those. The Norton was nice but lacked a certain..... I don't know what, and the Drop Sonic, despite being marketed as a new age bad mofo was rather flat and dull....maybe I just don't get it, anyway this is only my opinion and I think everyone needs to just find the pup that fufills their needs. The stock pups on any cheap guitar are just **** and should be replaced ASAP, they really dont let your guitar shine like it should.

I would say that this is a medium to hot 'bucker, for sure not as hot as a Lawrence, but hotter than the Norton.
I am using a Crate V 18 112, a CMATMODs DS 1, MXR 6 Band, and a Small Clone Chorus, not too many effects (yet) but this is mainly my pup for distorted sounds so it goes through the EQ and DS 1. It is stunning for ripping distortion, nice chunky rhythm and it screams on the high strings so lead sounds fantastic. I don't use it for cleans, I have a Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell in the neck for that. Don't be misguided by the name of that pup it is stellar in the neck for some almost single coil clean sounds. Truly unique. I play experimental sort of music, I like to get nice and heavy from time to time, but I also like to back it off a bit and go clean. I guess a band like Alice In Chains would be a big influence on my playing. But I also love Pantera, Tool, Helmet, Korn(the earlier stuff) Nirvana, Pink Floyd... there is a large list and I hate to limit what I do so a little bit of alot I guess.
I would say that this pup might lean on the trebly side, but has enough bass and balls to roll.
I would not use this in the neck, I had a douche from a music store install one of these in the neck positon of a 7 string that I used to have and it was wayyyy to much, hot pups in the neck position sound like ***.
This is a versatile pup good for almost any kind of music you'd like to make.

I have been playing off and on for about 10 years and I am by no means a pro, but I do have an ear for what sounds good and this sum***** sounds like god down from the heavens. If you want an extremely versatile bridge pup that has some balls, pick up a JB, again, it's a love/hate thing, but if you like it you'll love it.

Hot output, very, very boxy, mids and flubby on the lows. Good for singing solos where the note starts to turn into feedback. Very vocal and cool for that. No crunch tones ala ACDC or VH stuff. You want a more balanced pickup like the 59, or a Gibson PAF type. Too much mids/honk in this JB.

It has a slightly hotter output than the Burstbucker Pro's in my les Paul. At first I didn't like it too much. But the more I play it, the more I LOVE this pickup. It's got authority and balls. Very dynamic to pick attack and playing style. I have had it in the guitar for a few months now, and am very glad I dropped it in there. I play Hard Rock, Blues, and Metal through a Marshall TSL100 head into a Mesa 4x12 cab.

For leads this thing ROCKS. Higher up on the neck the tone seems to get compressed and starts singing, like a neck pickup would..way cool. It's quite the change from the Burstbucker in my Les Paul. I am seriously considering putting one of these in my Les Paul, as it is my main guitar.
I have tried the Duncan Distortion, Custom Custom, Custom, EMG's and various Gibson humbuckers. This and the Burstbucker Pro are my favorite. It just has BALLS.

medium to high output, more output than dimarzio PAF pro in my other guitar, but not too much, it's perfect..
im using it with a POD XT live, running straight to the PC, i'm focusing on alternative rock, hardrock, fusion rock, but i like to play just everything from acoustic instrumental to death metal :p
OVERALL: i think it's geared towards the higher mids, it's bright, and lots but not too much of mids, lows are kinda loose.
the clean tone is honky, this pickup wont give you that crispy clean tone, so you need good neck pickup for all the clean jobs..
LEAD TONE: i think it's the best duncan for lead playing, you know it when you do some long sustained bends, the highs become more present, then it began to sing, it's like having a slight chorus on your tone, then slowly it turns to sweet harmonics before it fades away, very good tone..
RHYTM TONE: mmm.. you can smell the 80s, bright distortion with depth, and just the right amount of mids to balance with the highs, lows are kinda loose, really good for heavy chords, let me say it again, HEAVY!!! playing the low E chord gives you nothing less than brutality, very very solid and thick sound.. it screams metal!!
playing the higher chords really give you that EVH style of tone, bright with juicy mids..
you gotta be careful with the lows tho, don't put this pickup too close to the strings, or it will turn out muddy, VERY MUDDY!!! back it off, until you find the lows not overwhelming, this pickup is very height sensitive..
you can also do yourself a favor and install a push-pull pot aka. koil tap, this will give you VERY TIGHT lows, but with lower output..

Installed in a Gibson Sonex Deluxe 180 in the Neck position. I have no idea what pickup I was replacing. The originals are long gone. The bridge pickup is a Seymour Duncan SH6 Distortion. I replaced the pickups because the old ones were weak and muddy. The original pickups (dirty fingers?) were hot and muddy. I wanted hot and defined.

Seems like it's got pretty high output. With the volume on 4 or 5, it sounds about as loud as the previous pickups which were pretty weak. The JB makes my Fender Deluxe compress easily, drives my marshall really hard.
The tone is hot and clear. The guitar is naturally bassy and sustains a lot on its own. Every other pickup has been dark and muddy in this guitar. The JB isn't dark. Seems to compensate well for this guitar. Nice warm clean, suitable for jazz. With the volume full up, it's hot enough for pretty much whatever.

Been playing 13 years. That also how long I've had this guitar. This is definitely the best this guitar has ever sounded. I own a variety of guitars with lots of different pickups. SC, p90, vintage-style Humbuckers and now this with hotter humbuckers. It rounds out my collection nicely. I love how this pickup give a really good clean sound as well as overdriven. I wasn't looking for 'that sound', I just knew I wanted something on the hot side. I got it. I'm really happy with it, and the nice clean sound is a pleasant extra.

Been playing 35 years. Have a dozen or so guitars so I seek out different tones. I want a hard Gibson sound from my Strat--the JB comes very close. The output is great. Not too much to handle, doesn't squell at loud volume. Running through Boss GT-7 into Traynor YVC-30 (30 watt tube) AMPI. Tone is great. When mixed with the Jazz on the clean sound, it is very versatile for different tones based on the volumes of each pickup. I play Classic Rock. I'm surprised at the very negative reviews on this pickup. But then again I play Classic Rock and perhaps this wouldn't be the best pickup for modern Rock.

I would replace this if it were destroyed or stolen. I've been playing guitar for over 25 years. My other guitars are a 2006 Gibson Les Paul Standard (stock) and a Ibanez RG350 (Seymour Duncan int the Bridge position). I like the JB for the Mohogany body guitar because I think the Dunan Distortion may have been a little too much and may have turned muddy. The JB has a good high end blend to bring out the nice Mohogany tone. Great Pickup, make sure the poles are adjusted properly.

I really hated this pickup. Turns out I don't like high impedance pickups at all. They are just all really distorted mids with no highs and a bottom end that is all mud. I hate that sound. You can't get any rock and roll (as opposed to rock) sounds out of this thing at all. I changed it to a Pearly Gates bridge pickup and now I am happy. Again, this pickup is for Eddie Van Halen types who just want to make a bunch of noise. Yuck.

Anybody want to buy a pickup? Just kidding really but its just gathering dust in a drawer, wouldn't use it in anything I own. Its well made and all but not the sound for me. I have eight guitars that I play and I like low impedance pickups so I get my distortion from the power tubes and nowhere else and its got to be clean and clear when I want it. Just not for me. I do like the Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates or '59 humbuckers, the T.V. Jones classics I have in my Gretsch White Falcon, and the Gibson Classic 57's I have in my Riviera elite. Those pickups have sweetness, soul, and bottom end growl. The JB is just all noise.

I bought this to replace the 490T bridge pickup in my SG Special. I wanted similar tone to the stock pickup with a little more output. The reviews here indicated this would be the case, along with the folks at Duncan. Sadly, this was *NOT* the case.

The output level is less than the stock pickup was. The neck pickup now has more output than the bridge. Highs? non-existant. All mids. Really lousy blanket-over-the-amp mids. I raised the pickup as high as it would go, still too low. Raised the polepieces until the stick out of the pickup 3/8 inch. Looks like crap, but now is almost as loud as the stock pickup. The neck pickup, lowered all the way down, is *Still* louder! In another guitar I have mighty mite motherbuckers. I really didn't care for the bridge tone in it, but it SMOKES this thing. If I switch my Heartbreaker Head to the high gain mode, it sounds pretty decent, but then about ANY pickup will at this gain level. I think I will yank it out and go with a Dimarzio Super Distortion, or just put the stock pickup back in. It can't get much worse. After all the hype, I'm really disappointed. Sounds no better than many no-name pickups I've used in the last 35 years...

If lost or stolen, I would miss the instrument, not the pickup. I like nothing about it. Alnico V my butt. All-no-tone is more appropriate. I wish it had more higs. I wish it had comparable output to the stocker. After all, I was looking for a little *MORE* output. I wish somebody would take the blanket off of my amp when I switch to this pickup in low gain mode.

The output is relatively hot but not to the point it cannot be controlled by height and amp adjustments. The sustain and tone is superb and again is very controllable with guitar and amp settings. I play mostly southern-fried, classic and heavy rock. The JB is so versatile you can play most anything, jazz, rock, gospel even metal with the right amp settings. I use a Fender Cyber Twin SE so good multi effects are at my disposal and the JB sounds great through them and did I mention its is very versatile?

Ok here is the bottom line opinion from a old "fat cat w/a strat":
In other reviews posted I like to collect Jay Turser guitars mainly the JT-55 series just for the rip of it. The stock neck pickups were ok but I wanted to experiment with the bridge and purchased a Burst Bucker Pro--aaarrrrgggg! Was ok at first-no soul and was out mega bucks. I then chose the JB because Seymour himself liked it and that was good enough for me. Picked up a gold covered JB put it in the bridge of a JT-55 and it transformed this cheap import clone into a (you know who) slayer. Then I purchased another to test in each Turser and the rest is history. Most have covered pickups but the JT200 Pro was open coiled, and yes there is a slight tone difference between the 2 but not worth converting both pickups just to have a match. If lost or stolen would I purchase again-well if the fool got passed the dogs he would have to carry out a fire proof vault. I have 6 Tursers 4 of which JB's were added and 1 with a SD Custom and 2 more guitars coming-so yes. If you look up the word versatile in your Funk & Wagnals, a picture of a SH4-JB will be beside the definition. Customer service with Seymour Duncan is awesome-these folks do givarip about your satifaction.

The output level on this pickup is very hot. My guitar setup is the guitar straight into the amp, no effects or coloring of any kind. I like to get my distortion from the pickup, and this pickup can deliver in spades. I play blues/rock/hard rock styles.
I didn't think that the pickup cleaned up particularly well, and I thought it was a bit muddy, but it is very strong pickup and the lead tone was smoldering.

I've been playing for about 8 years and I've used a number of Seymour Duncans (SH-5 Custom, SH-6 Distortion, SH-1 '59) and this one was good I thought. I didn't like it as much as the Custom, but it was a good strong pickup and I liked it. I ended up selling the guitar that I put it into, the guitar wasn't for me, but the pickup was good. Not sure if I'd want to buy another one. I like the Custom too much.

Since the Engl and the Digitech GSP have tons of gain i am very glad that the JB has a decent output, but not as hot as a SH-8 or Emg 81.
I??d say medium output.
Tone:
This PU has balls and cuts through the mix at the same time. I play my Baritone very low tuned (A)and therefore need lots of highs and especially mids since i can??t stand midscoop. The JB gives me all that and still does not sound muddy this low tuned.
I also use i quite often for clean sounds when splitted to a single coil. Together with ??59 it sounds awesome.
Style of music:
I play Death Metal and it suits me and my gear very well. But actually i can??t see any musical style this PU couldn??t handle with a bit fiddling on an amps EQ.

My other guitars (2 Jacksons) have different pick ups, one has an Emg 81, the other a SH-6 Duncan Distortion. I also tried the Sh-8 Invader (sucked all the sustain+muddy)but the JB is the best so far.
I didn??t have to pay extra for it since it is the stock PU in my guitar, but the price here (Germany) for the JB is surprisingly low. It is cheaper than all Emgs, Di Marzios and even the other Duncans.
So it is definately value for money.

The output is nice and hot. I was expecting much more, which I didn't really want. This is a good middle ground pickup. I play it through a Zvex Super Hard On then a BYOC delay and then a modded crybaby into a Sovtek Mig 60 and then finally into an Emperor cabinet w/ G12H-30's. It has a nice classic tone, that could get pretty metal if needed. I play rock 'n roll like Sabbath, Captain Beyond, Hawkwind etc... I would not use this for a neck pickup for any circumstance.

I would buy another if it were destroyed or stolen. I have a Les Paul with burstbuckers that I would change if it didn't effect the value of the guitar. I chose this pickup because I don't play metal and I didn't want to get the 59 because I was worried it would be too weak. I really dig this pickup and will probably hang on to it for a long time.

This is a bridge pickup all the way. I originally had it in an Epiphone G-400 and hated it, then I dropped it into a Fernandes Dragonfly Strat-type guitar and fell in love. It sounds so much different in the Fernandes!
Lots of hard rock/metal artists have used it. Just off the top of my head... Jerry Cantrell, Kurt Cobain, Greg Ginn, Billy Joe Armstrong, etc. Maybe everyone except for Jeff Beck himself-- it's worth noting that Beck himself never actually used the "J.B." A young Seymour Duncan merely built a high gain pickup after working on Beck's favorite Les Paul and discovering the bridge pickup had come very hot from the factory. He started selling his custom overwound pickups as "the J.B. mod" soon after to guitarists wanting a piece of Beck's tone.

This pickup is the classic one-trick pony, as I was very disappointed to find originally. I was looking for the sound of 80s hardcore and 90s grunge/alternative, when damn near everyone was using this pickup.
In the Epiphone G400 I originally installed it in, it was terrible. Just a shrill, thin mess that sounded like crap unless I cranked the gain way up, and even then it didn't sound like it was worth $70. I didn't hear much in the way of mids, and no bass at all. Just pure icepick treble. The clean sound was so bad it was totally unusable. The mushy stock pickup had been better!
However, after being disgusted with the even thinner, nothing-but-treble bridge pickup in my Fernandes Firefly (a really nice Japanese model I picked up for $125), I decided to try it in the Fernandes. WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE! In the Fernandes, which has a basswood body, strat-style bridge, and a slightly dark, "rounded" acoustic sound, the JB came alive. Now that I have two other pickups to use for clean, I can use the JB for what it was designed for: distortion! The distorted sound is now full, with a noticable midrange hump that jumps out without sounding harsh, and it just sounds great as I feed it more and more gain. Even on milder settings it sounds full, with just the right amount of grit. Still not very usable for clean, but who uses the bridge on a strat for clean sounds anyway?
Because of the wide difference, worthless clean tones, and the bad experience with the G-400, I give it a 7.

This pickup was simply meant for the Fernandes, and I can't imagine any other working any better. If you're looking for a hard-rockin' bridge pickup for a Strat, I recommend it whole heartedly, but in a Gibson-style guitar I have to urge caution. If you expect to ever use your bridge pickup for playing clean, you will NOT be happy. Also, while I did get finally get just the sound I was looking for, I have to admit it does sound kind of "generic" after a while because so many people use it.

If I ever have two guitars, one of them will definitely contain of JB pickup. I've been playing for 5 yrs, use gear mention above. When I was to replace stock pickups I hesitated between sh-4 and sh-5. I chose sh-4 and that was a good decision :) sound is much clearer! it came with hammer guitar and has no seymour duncan's logos so I bought it for ridiculous price - 200PLN ~ 35GBP ~ $70. To sum up: pretty hot pickup but extremely versatile.

I love this pickup. It's one of my all time favorites. I prefer to use GHS boomers and super steels with it. Personally I think it sounds best with a heavy guitar.

Sonic evaluation: In the Epiphone Gothic V into my marshall 8200 head with a 1960 lead cab. The guitar is a screaming metal machine now with the harmonics jumping out just like the EMG-81 like in my other guitars. The output is just right and it works perfectly for me. Its very touch sensitive. Every note will come out and does with clarity and punch. Does great for down picking and alternate picking, solos are great also.

Comments: I would buy this pickup for future guitars. Great for metal, I dont know why people bitch about the output of this pickup. Ok its not the hottest but its defanetly hot. Plus the harmonics are outstanding. I know this pickup does and will sound different in other guitars but the first time I played one was in a jackson kelly and it was really good. C'mon Im an EMG-81 guy and I approve this pickup in output that should say something lol. Anyways for the 11 years I've been playing and going through alot of pickups, the JB is the most pro sounding passive humbucker. I feel when you get pickups with alot of distortion or too much bass it tends to muddy things up. If your amp rig has plenty of gain go for the JB.

Perceived output level: This pickup has a medium hot tone. It's not as hot as an EMG-81 or a DiMarzio X2N. And I don't think it's as hot as a DiMarzio super distortion.
Tone: It has a nice warm tone. It's also crunchy. But not muddy. It's balanced sounding. It sounds prettier than the X2N. It also has more warmth than the X2N. The lead tones are rounder but not as loud as the X2N's. And they don't sustain as long. And this is what I miss. The JB isn't scratchy sounding.
Sonic evaluation: I'm playing it through a Marshall TSL602 with Wolverine speakers and EL34 power tubes and a 1960A cab with four Celestion G12T-75w speakers. It has a warm crunchy sound. I really like it. It just doesn't sustain as long as I would like. But this may be the guitar's fault. But then again the pickup may not be putting enough volts into the front of my amp as I like. I notice it doesn't sound very good with distortion or overdrive pedals either.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: It's a good match for rock. However on this guitar there isn't as much sustain as I'd like. The tone seems to die away too soon for my tastes. But this may be the guitar's fault. As it's very light weight. It's a mini V with wood removed around the neck juncture for the rhythm humbucker. On a Les Paul or Explorer these pickups may probably shine. The tone is there. It just doesn't last as long as I would like. I think I'll try a DiMarzio super distortion next. If that doesn't do it I'll go with an EMG-81. Or put the X2N back in.

Sonic evaluation: I running my kv2 through a tubescreamer into my marshall dsl w/ reverb.Thats it! This pickup needs to be played with a TUBE amp! I've a guitar teacher aswell as a student of the legendary jim robitaille at Dartmouth. The people that had said this pickup was bad are people that haven't developed an ear for a great guitar tone. the clean tones are glassly and extremely clear. When driven lightly it keeps the same definition and clearity. When overdriven to rock or metal the attack its quick and precise. I will admit its not as hot as an EMG 81 but since this is the most versitle pickup i've ever heard it has the EMG 81 beat. Where this pickup shines is in the upper registers. The notes are quick and precise without any extra gain.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: If you don't play anything but power chords and palm mute the E string go with the EMG 81. If you actually want to be a musician this is your first step. I recommend this in the bridge but still works well in the neck.

Comments: If destroyed or stolen, i would buy two its a bargin. this is the best pickup for the money. i had a EMG 81-89 set put in my other guitar. The emg 81 doesn't mix well with the marshalls mids. the emg 89 is actually a great neck pickup. I've been playing for 4 years and i'm a jazz performance major at Dartmouth. I love the clarity of the JB. the only thing i hate is when ppl badmouth this pickup. BEWARE this pickup will be so clear if you make a mistake you'll hear it theres no extra muddish distortion. It will improve your playing this way. AGAIN use this with a TUBE amp. Most solid states sound like crap.

The JB sounds fantastic with Gibsons! There's a reason why they are the prefer choice of so many professionals. They are affordable and sound great! My cleans are warm and chimey and not to mention rich sounding as well as the distortion. YOu can't go wrong with JB. I've tried the custom 5, Custom Custom and some other pickups. I just prefer the JB!

Tone: Just enough bass to give it chunk, and lotsa highs. Some mids in there too
Sonic evaluation: Schecter to a Boss MT-2 to a Roland Cube 15. My halfstack tone sux, so I cant say much about loud volumes. This pickup sounds great for cleans and metal! Some might notice that this pickup, when overdriven, has this funny yet good characteristic. It has this 'greasy' or 'sticky' feel to it. It feels so good! I wish my Hot Rails had this feel to it. Pinch harmonics come out nicely and loud, and the thickness of the distortion sure is satisfying thanks to the sticky feel. Chugging and drop tunings are fun and clear with high-gain, and the cleans are pristine, especially with the split-coil. Some say its too trebly or it has a weird mid-spike, but I had nothing but good results with it. Try it out!

Comments: If it was stolen, then that would suck ass. I would shoot the guy with my laser-shooting guitar! I really liked everything about this pickup, but I replaced it with a Duncan Distortion cuz it basically the same but it has more bass/balls(not that the JB doesnt have them). If I had another guitar with a humbucker bridge position, I would drop this in, indubitably! I really really enjoyed that sticky feel, cuz it makes the distortion feel so much thicker and full. For some odd reason both my pickups have this buzz when the distortion is on but that might just be the wiring, although I didnt see anything wrong with it. I really enjoyed everything about this pickup; Its cleans are great for many people's needs, and the distortion can chunk and scream with the best of them. If it had more significantly more bass, this pickup would freakin rock! Although this pickup is great for what I do, I switched it with the Distortion model. As a metal head, the Distortion was a wise replacement as it has more bass and that same 'sticky' feel to it. But as a versatile metal head, my words say ALOT for the JB. Its a great pickup!! Try it out!

Sonic evaluation: I am using a Crate BV-120 stack and a Traynor YCV80 combo. the effects i run my guitar through is a noise suppressor, a wah, a chorus and a reverb (all BOSS). the JB sounds full on leads and solos. it has really good cut, great amount of mids and treble with a fair amount of bass. in solo's, the harmonics jump out of my guitar. the harmonics are very tight, like that of the EMG 81. the JB has a great amount of crunch that doesnt sound too compressed and buzzy. it has that "awoooaahh" vowel quality to it... almost like a tone zone. i have an Ibanez RG with a Tone Zone in the bridge and compared to the JB, it is a lot more bassy and the harmonics are almost "airy" sounding. the TZ also has a lot more crunch and more modern sounding. the JB is a very versatile pickup, have very decent cleans, unlike the TZ which is very muddy on clean. it also matches VERY WELL with the Jazz in the neck. although the Jazz is wired differently in my PRS, when the tone pot is pushed down, the JB is on humbucker mode and the Jazz is on single coil, and when pushed up, the JB is in single-coil mode and the Jazz is in humbucker mode. the Jazz matches better split with the JB in humbucker mode.

Comments: I cant say enough good things about this pickup, i should've gotten this pickup earlier. ive been playing for almost 8 yearsm played in different bands with different styles of music, i've gone through EMG's, Dimarzios, Fenders, Gibsons, Duncan Custom, Distortion and the JB is as close to that "tone-in-my-head" as its ever gonna get. although the Dimarzio TZ comes close to the JB, but the cleans on the TZ are horrible. the JB is not gonna be the most popular pickup in the world for nothing. if it gets stolen(?)... i would definitely replace it again. im very satisfied with this one. Although nothing is perfect i will give it a 9.

Sonic evaluation: I just got an SG copy, a new Japanese Edwards copy of a Gibson three pickup SG custom. It has two JBs, one in the bridge and one in the middle, and a 59 in the neck. I also have a PRS CE-22, a Dillion LP copy, and a Danelectro DC-59. Playing into a Traynor YCV-40. I bought a filtertron and put it in the bridge of the Dillion but I think I get a better rockabilly sound with the JB clean on the bridge position. So it can definitely do vintage.

Sonic evaluation: Peavey 6505+ and matching 4x12. Mostly the lead and crunch channels. This pickup makes a Gibson sound like a Gibson. Its just a perfect match in a mahogany guitar, really makes you cut through well.
On this guitar ive went through a few pickups trying to get the right tone. Dimarzio X2N, Dimarzio SD, the stock 500T. They all were pretty good pickups as far as tone went, but they were all way to hot for modern amps. The high output turns your sound to mush in a high gain amp. The JB is hot enough for metal, but retains clarity and punch.

Comments: The JB was the first pickup i ever bought, then for an Ibanez Artist. They just sound right to me. I play better with a JB, i sound better with a JB. I dont sound like me without one. I've tried many other pickups on many guitars and i keep coming back to this one. EMG 81, Dimarzio X2N, Super Distortion, Virtual PAF, Paf Pro, Duncan Dimebucker ect. The JB rules over all, no contest the best humbucking pickup out on the market period.

The Chameleon is a great digital preamp, better than 90% of the valve preamps I have tried out. (you may find my presets at www.rocktron.com)
The Intellifex and Virtualizer PRO are just effect processors.
The Marshall is a hybrid combo, featuring one Sovtek 12AX7 in the preamp circuitery and a solid-state power stage. It also has two Celestion G12-T speakres.
I use the Rocktron preamp with the Marshall effect loop return for most of the time. Sometimes I like to use the Marshall's preamp also.
In either case, the pickup really compensates the "lack of body" of the guitar and gives the extra highs and lows the acrylic body lacks.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: IMHO, this pickup is a very good option for Rockers/Metalheads. I bet it will sound VERY good on a Les Paul.

Sonic evaluation: This pickup is a CLASSIC! Been around for a long time. It has a very nice top end with great harmonics that make is great for soloing; leads through a tube amp just rip out with a big, full sound, not too compressed. The mid range gives you a good distortion for most musical styles. The clarity on distortion is noteworthy, it's what sets this pickup apart from many other high-output pickups. The bass is surprisingly well defined (my guitar w/ the JB is a baritone tuned to B), I was expecting less. The sound is very full and dark on the baritone. I admit there might be a more precise and harder attacking pickup, but I like the warmth the J has.
Cleans are ok, if you don't have it set too high in your guitar they'll sound better, but don't expect single.coil like sounds from it. It sounds warm and mid-rangy.

Comments: I actually have a DiMarzio D-Sonic lying around at home which I might use on the baritone sometime. At the moment I like the sounds I get from the JB which are a bit more Hard Rock/Classic Metal than modern stuff. If it broke well I'd use the D-sonic for a while.
This pickup is the best all-around pickup you can buy in my opinion, which is why it is so popular.

Sonic evaluation: A solid Maple Double Fat Strat into a)JCM 600 B)JCM 800 C) Laney Gh100TI. For the past 15+ years I've used a JB loaded guitar to setup my rig. It's a benchmark for which all other PUs are judged against. Why? In the Marshalls it's articulate and the harmonics simply screamed out! Palm mutes could be better but the lead tone makes up for it. Besides if you're playing palm mutes with A5 type chords you can't get a PU that's too overwhelmingly middy since your higher strings won't ring out. Through my Laney the JB helps to brighten things up. Is it too bright? It really depends on your rig. If you find it's too bright put in a TBX tone pot. For what's it's worth : Maple Strat with a JB into a decent size pedal line into a Marshall and I think it sounds great for what I play.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I know alot of players that like the fact that it cleans up pretty well for a hot bridge PU. I don't use it clean much but I guess it's good to know that it's there. I play Old School Metal - which means pinch harmonics are very common.

Comments: The JB is just over 30 years old and should be in the Hall of Fame of PUs. I have picked up several JBs over the years so if someone would steal it I'd say "They just stole one heck of a PU!". A friend needs a PU swap I'll toss them a JB. The JB is no longer a source of tone it's part of my equipment. Doesn't mean I only play JB's but for a PU to go into another one of my guitars and stay there it has to 1st be compared to the JB and fill a niche that the JB doesn't cover. I'm still searching for a better alnico 5 PU that will beat the JB. Some have come close and some have taken the JB onto another plane but they also cost over 2 times the price. JB = Fantastic Value for sure.

Sonic evaluation: I normally use a Vetta with the Mesa'esc models at full throttle. I've had this in two Les Pauls, a '04 Standard, and a '00 Double-cut Standard. Initially it replaced the Burstbucker V in the Standard. The BBV had a lot of output, but was too vintage sounding and of course became pure mud with some gain. In with the JB... The Standards are considered dark in general, but the JB made it quite a bit darker. It was a nice tight sound, full, but with slightly more treble than bass. It made the Standard a bit too dark for my taste. It wasn't a perfect match with the SD Alnico II Pro at the neck, but it wasn't a horrible match either. The DC Standard (arch top) is quite a bit lighter with, I assume, larger sound chambers, therefore quite a bit brighter and more open sounding. The JB matched with the DC nicely, unlike the stock which was quite muddy in this environment. The guitar is still bright sounding, but quite a bit tighter while still retaining a full sound (fuller than in the Standard, with more bass). It played well with the SD '59 at the neck.

Comments: Overall it has a versatile rock sound. Clean with a tone that has bite, but can be smoothed out without much effort. If your guitar is dark sounding, it will continue to be that way with the JB. It can tame a guitar that is too open/bright. I have 12 years under my belt and am always looking for new sounds. I've decide I don't want "my" sound, I want to be able to have any sound I happen to feel like at that particular moment... I'll be keeping the JB around for sure, better than any Gibson stocks. Too bad Gibson can't give us more options... The JB gets an 8, because perfection is impossible.

Sonic evaluation: I used this pickup in live situations running through various amps including a 5150, and a POD straight into the board. While I agree with many others here that this pu is great for harmonics (probably the best I've ever used for this, although I have never used active pickups), I didn't like it's sound overall. My main complaint is that I found the bottom end loose and farty sounding. Maybe I'm just one of those crazy, misguided individuals that prefers the sound of Dimarzios. I have since installed a super distortion and it sounds great, although artificial harmonics are much more difficult to come by with it. The improvement in tone was well worth that trade off.
Some have said that the JB sounds good clean, however as a rule I dislike humbuckers for this and prefer single coils so I can't really comment objectively on that.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: If you like a tight bottom end for your distorted stuff I'd look elsewhere.

Been playing about 8 years, been serious for about 4 years. i've played a Gibson LP studio with th 496r, 498t through both a 135 watt marshall, and my Crate, and these blow the Gibsons off the face of the planet. These are the perfect pickups for this particular guitar, it's made of swamp ash, so that probably adds to the fullness of tone. Just bought an ESP EC-400 loaded with EMG-81s, haven't plugged it up yet but it's hard to imagine it sounding any better than my Explorer. Damn near perfection.

Sonic evaluation: I had to get rid of this, but I thought I'd share my reasons, since a lot of people buy this pickup, and if you go into the Seymour Duncan forums, they'll recommend this to you for rock. I was using this in the Schecter C1 Blackjack that I used to have, and it had to go! It hurt my head! I couldn't stand to be in the same room with it (when it was plugged in and playing, I mean.) It cut through my ears like an icepick, especially when it was clean. It was literally unusable clean. What's that you say? Turn down the treble using my tone pot? Well, sure, but then the '59 pickup in the neck would sound wrong. The one thing I do have to say good about this is that it made harmonics a snap. It was literally so hot that it gave you that sound where the guitar sounds like it's about to explode, you know, where any noise you make on the strings by rubbing your hand turns into pinch harmonics. I eventually settled on putting an SH-5 Custom where the JB used to be, and that sounded SOOOO much better. Finally, I sold the whole guitar, because I didn't like the 25.5" scale. Now I've got a SH-6 Distortion, which I prefer over the Custom.

Sonic evaluation: I use a Gibson LP Studio plugged straight into a Mesa Single Rectifier. The Recto then goes to a THD Hotplate, and then to a Marshall MG412 cabinet.
I was expecting a little more gain out of the JB, but it is definitely more than the 498T. Like other people have said, it does lack bass, but that's easily corrected by turning the bass up on the amp. It gives very clear, pronounced harmonics and has great sustain. It also cleans up very nicely (much better than the 498T) and has a nice tone for a bridge humbucker.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play a lot of metal, ie. Metallica, Megadeth, Godsmack, etc., and this pickup fits them all.

Sonic evaluation: I'm running this PUP in my Epi Les Paul (mahogany body and neck with a maple cap) straight into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (modded and using a Jensen C12N). This pickup sizzles through this rig! It's perfect for cutting through the mix during a solo and combined with the '59 in the neck position it provides awesome balance for rhythm. Also, if you like pinch harmonics this pickup will be your best friend.

It can do great leads and rythm crunch and it always maintains a clear focus sound that is warm and balanced. I really dig this pickup and I don't struggle to tweak it the next day or week. It's very consistent and I love it! This pickup may not sound good for every guitar but for me it's perfect!

The JB is an industry standard.Gear: LOTS!Great spike at 400 hZ that cuts through the mix and good harmonics.Music industry trivia: SD's early ads stated that this was a copy of a PUP made for Jeff Beck (The JB) Herein lies a tale.....when I contacted SD in the mid-90's and asked them what JB stands for, (already knowing the Jeff Beck hype),the response was:
(Dead silence)....Uh...well.."Jazz-Blues" (?!) Seems they changed their story.Perhaps it's because once upon a time SD released an EVH PUP when he was the new kid on the block...without Eddie's permission.Result: He now endorses DiMarzio & Peavy.That being said, SD's are great PUPS; he goes after a vintage sound.Best retrofit in an SG,Les Paul, etc.However,I've found DiMarzio's work much better in Ibanez and lighter body guitars that need a Bit 0'"Omph"

I have tried almost everything. i tried the invader, i've tried that emg crap, i have tried the evolution (not too bad) but this one speaks my language. it is suprisingly toneful for a hot bridge humbucker, grat for pinch harmonics and all harmonics for that matter. i recommend it to all. i have been using this pickup for 8 months,so this review is not just some exited consumer venting his energy. it wont make you play better, it won't turn your garbage crate crap into a jcm800, but is is a good pickup. if there is a perfect bridge pickup this is it. remember, if you like to dip your face in a tacklebox, get an invader.

Tone: all around, i'm pretty happy. Definitely more full sounding than the stock super 70's. Notes cut clearer even with a great deal of distortion....
Sonic evaluation: like i said, its in my 1977 ibanez les paul copy, to a mesa boogie v-twin preamp pedal into a '96 Fender Blues Deville. I also have an epi sheraton II with duncan custom (b) and '59 (n), which I'm very happy with. A friend had a JB in his epi lp, and I liked the sound, so i thought i'd give this one a try.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: i needed more chunk for rythmn in a punky rock cover band, this seemed to fit the bill quite nicely. Didn't get the feedback that I thought this pickup would give, but at least has nice tone and got rid of the microphonic squeal i was getting with the super 70's.

Perceived output level: The JB is a rather hot pickup, designed for gain of various strengths, the more the merrier!
Tone: I find the JB to be a pretty clear pickup, cuts through a loud mix, plenty of midrange to get your point across. Well balanced, but can be very thin in anything other than a mahogany body. Very trebly, for the lead player that likes his harmonics. Isn't going to give you a tremendous palm mute chug by itself, but when combined with the right neck p/up, watch out.
Sonic evaluation: I just wanted to make a couple of remarks about what I've found to be some interesting characteristics of this p/up.
First, the JB loses a great amount of it's fantastic grind when hooked up to a volume pot. I've found the JB to sound best when it's run straight to a tone pot, no volume. You want something softer, use your neck p/up, for God's sake!
Second, the treble can get very spiky, as many have mentioned. I have my tone pot around 7-8, just enough to tame some of the spikeyness without killing off the harmonics (which require treble!!!!)
Third, because the JB can get so thin, even with compression, I almost always use a neck/bridge setting. However, my neck p/ups are split between series and parallel. I use the parallel neck setting, volume (with tone cap and resistor - get a clue, people!) in combination with the JB. This is tone heaven!
On the DeArmond/JB(with chrome cover) combo, I can get some beautiful sounds, from a light crunch to full on high-gain insaneness. Here's a trick, though, when you have a JB with a chrome cover, extend the pole pieces a little bit, maybe 1/32 to 1/16, for better string separation. You'll definitely hear the difference. A metal cover seems to homogenize the magnetic field some, I wouldn't use a metal cover bridge humbucker on a dedicated shred machine.
With the Screamin' Demon/JB combination, I'm in shred heaven. The SDemon is also used in the parallel config, combined with the JB I get even more harmonics, growl and a great palm mute chunk. It's not the most versatile axe I own, but when I feel like bringing the roof down, this is the one, everything on, volume up, stand back!!!!
Also, I tend to raise my JB's up a little past where everyone says to set them. There's a point where you can hear the strings start to oscillate due to the magnets being too close, then back them off just a tad. I'm not recording in a multi-million dollar studio, I just want to scream some liquid fire and I'll put up with a little bit of oscillation to get it. There's nothing like it when you find it.
Last, a warning. I have found that the JB doesn't mate up well with an Alnico II pickup in the neck. Too much of a sonic change between them. Always use an Alnico V in the neck, you'll save yourself a headache and some $$$.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: These are no good for anything clean or light. If you are afraid of gain, stay away, far, far away.

Comments: I love the JB's for what I play. I use Pearly Gates in the bridges of my medium gain, blues guitars, although I'm now having a neck Antiquity installed in my PRS with a Blues Saraceno in the bridge, that should be interesting. It's not easy picking the right pickup, you really won't know anything until it's installed, but if you're a blues/hard rocker you can't start with a better bridge pickup than a JB. Why else would it be Seymour's all time best seller? Someone must like it. Best of luck to you, hope this helps.

Perceived output level: It sounds hotter than the stock pickups, but with an emphasis on the upper mids and treble.
Tone: Very bright and trebly. Too bright, for me. It's not quite the "icepick in the ear" feeling, but the treble strings sound harsh, with very little sustain. There is very little bass response in this pickup. The mids do have a nice sparkle to them, though. Bar chords sound nice and crisp, and there's a lot of note definition...I like that a lot. Unfortunately, MetalMan cannot live on barre chords alone; single note lines and leads sound very anemic, not at all what I was expecting. Strangely enough, my friend has a strat/tele hybrid with a JB Jr. in the bridge, and other than the tele's natural twanginess, I really can't tell the difference between his and my LP in a back-to-back sonic comparison. Whether you like the pickup or not, the JB definitely has a sound of its own.
Sonic evaluation: I'm playing through a 78 JMP 50 watt w/ EL34s, which is a pretty bright amp on its own. 16k is *really* hot for a pickup, and it seems to be boosting frequencies that are already very well compensated.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play 70s style hard rock and metal, with touches of stoner and doom. This is supposed to be the JB's bailiwick, but to my ears the JB is just too bright to compete with the rest of the band...I need something more balanced. However, I think it might sound better in rigs with higher headroom, like a Sunn Model T, Ampeg V-2, Fender, or Marshall with 6550 or KT-88 power tubes. The pickup is very hot and will do a fine job of driving the front end of an amp.

Comments: This was my first aftermarket pickup purchase. Buying pickups is such a dicey proposition...there are so many variables involved, and just because something sounds good in a store doesn't guarantee it'll sound the same when it's soldered in your guitar and running through your rig. The manufacturer's descriptions are of no real help, either, so it's really a matter of trial-and-error. (Come to think of it, this review itself may be of no value!)
Overall, I was disappointed with the JB. I thought it would help my leads to stand out more. After playing a friend's LP with a custom-wound Duncan pickup (from EVH's private stock, allegedly!) I think a Duncan 59/Rio Grande or similar PAF style would give me the solid fundamental sound I crave...the overdrive pedal can take care of the rest for leads.
In summary: it's a fine, well-made pickup, and while it has some nice qualities, it's not what I'm looking for.

Tone: Still not what I would call a "hi-fi" pickup, not in the way that a Fender single coil or a PAF is. Maybe it's just the guitar it's in, but my JB still sounds very midrangey with weak bass and trebles. Certainly doesn't seem to fit the little tone profile graph that Seymour provided on his website.
Sonic evaluation: I'm running my Paul through a Laney HC50 combo amp--admittedly not the best amp in the world, I know--and often through distortion boxes. I have to say that the Les Paul/JB sounds best through a good distortion, like a Boss DS-1 or a Big Muff. It excels at creamy overdriven tones, and it makes controllable feedback harmonics easy to get. By itself, on the clean channel, it sounds annoyingly whiny. The JB is definitely a rock-type distortion pickup.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Excellent for hard rock, Floydish space rock in combination with a Big Muff or similar fuzztone, classic rock...anywhere you want thick, chunky overdriven power chords and leads. Not as good for more modern alternative type rock, which generally begs for a brighter Fendery sound. Might do for metal in a pinch.

Comments: The JB certainly was a step up from the crap stock bridge pickup Epiphone had plopped in my (at $500, somewhat overpriced) Paul, but it still isn't quite what I'm looking for. I was really hoping for a really balanced sound, with good bass and trebles that was also powerful and fat (ie not a Strat sound, but something with a bit of that Fender fidelity). As it stands, the JB/Paul combination makes for a great high-gain rock guitar, but not a very versatile one in that it only sounds good (to me anyway) through a distortion, which may have been Seymour's intention all along. Which is cool. I wish I could switch between two bridge pickups without having to reinstall and rewire the whole mess, and that's my misfortune. I also have a Duncan '59 that I might put in instead to see if it's more to my liking, and save the JB for something else. It's not a bad pickup for what it does, but don't expect it to be a panacea cuz it's definitely not an all-around performer like a PAF.
One thing I HAVEN'T tried, btw, is playing with the JB's 4-conductor wiring, which of course allows for all kinds of switching tricks like phase, coil split, series/parallel, etc. Everything I've said relates to standard series wiring.

Comments: Destroyed or stolen: first I'd whore myself out to the women of my town to get another one or maybe something better. Then I'd find the little punk who stole it and break all ten of his fingers for touching my stuff. I've been playin for about ten and a half years. This is my one and only rig. I don't gig but I still love to play and am planning on getting better stuff( it's taking forever though, cause I work at KMart). I considered the Custom 5 but I was afraid it would sound too bassy like my DiMarzio. I picked this because I heard great things from most people who bought it. The sound I had in my head was the rhythm tone in Aerosmith's "Sick As A Dog" I'm not sure whether it was Brad or Joe who played it. I heard maybe even Tom Hamilton played rhythm on that track. If you have the cd listen to the middle of the song where its just the drums and guitar. You'll know what I mean. I'm closer to that sound but I think if I just get a tube amp I'll be there. I also plan to get an Elitist '61 SG and put some Burstbuckers in it. But for now I'm satisfied. I wish it had a nickel cover but thats no big deal.

It doesn't really matter what I'm playing through but I'll tell you anyway - Marshall JMP-1 through 2 Fender Champ 25SE's with a Quadraverb in stereo live, POD, J-Station and JMP-1 direct. This pickup sounds great in this guitar. It has more bottom end in a mahogany guitar (I had it in basswood before) and is sweet with plenty of sustain which the tone zone lacked in this guitar. The tone zone wasn't bad and I really tried to like it but it tended to choke up (loose sustain) under medium to heavy gain. I had to modify (cut) the mounting tabs of the JB a little to get it to fit in this guitar but it was no big deal. I don't think Ibanez want's you to put Duncans (or others) in this guitar...TOO BAD!!

Comments: If it were stolen I'd be sorry for the guy since I have a tracking device in the guitar. Yeah right!! Anyway, I chose this pickup (and the Jazz in the neck) based on past experience and the sound clips on the SD website (I decided by the clean clips). It seems not many people put Duncans in their Ibanez's... could it be because they don't fit without modification? Shame on you Ibanez... I've had Ibanez's since I was 16 and I've been playing for 30+ years. I really tried to like the Dimarzios but gave in to Duncans again! I guess I'm a Duncan mahn. If you have a mahogany body guitar and like to FEEL your playing... go for the JB. It won't let you down.

Comments: If it were destroyed or stolen it wouldn't be my problem, I've already traded it in on a Carvin M22T which kicks ass, might I add.
I've been playing for 3+ years...
I liked how the pick-up sounded on clean, or clean with effects such as chorus...etc...
I wish it had a better sound on distortion, was too bassy and
didn't give much feeling...
If you like Seymour Duncans, and this type of sound
go ahead and get it, but it just didn't suit me.
I wanted a more metal crunch, with great sustain on all the notes.
And good harmonics. The JB didn't have any of those except
the good harmonics, but not good enough.

Tone: Balanced and beautiful.
Sonic evaluation: I am using this bridge bucker in a Hamer Mirage and a Hamer Studio. I am running through a VHT Valvulator into a Line 6 Vetta and this pickup is heaven. Ther bottom is thick and chunky...nice and tight. The mids are perfect and thick, plus the highs are sweet and warm. This pickup sounds great clean and heavy. I have no complaints at this point and hopefully do not see any in the future. I can't get over the thickness of the Duncan JB......beautiful and rich tone. Our detuned heavy songs now sound so much more defined and thick....even over the Rio grande BBQ which I was using in another guitar. I also tried the Duncan C-5 inthe Hamer but it sounded thin next to the thick balls of the JB. Great pup!!!! I tried EMGs and hated them.....but I didn't spend time with them.

Perceived output level: About the same as stock, very generic.

Sonic evaluation: I bought this pickup based on the reviews here, as well as my satisfaction with the Duncan '59 that I was already using in the neck. I play through a SF Super Reverb. I have to tell you though, that I am a little disappointed in this pickup. The JB to me sounds very generic and bland. It is average in output, and seems to lack the "sparkle" of the '59. There may be a reason, however.
I have come to realize that Epi LP Standards have maple necks. It is obvious if you look at one with paint you can see through, not ebony, or the like. The neck's wood is clearly lighter than the body, and has a different grain than mahagony. Also, you can look at the used ones on ebay, and any dents,chips on the necks will reveal the unmistakable evidence of Maple. I just looked at some new 2003 EPI LPs, at Sam Ash, and guess what? They have maple necks; three piece, like the old Gibson LP Deluxe's.
Is that a bad thing? Not according to a Luthier I just spoke to. The Maple neck can withstand falls "FAR" better than Mahogony. It also gives the guitar a brighter sound, not as dark as it's Gibson counterpart. I just wish Epiphone would be honest, and admit that their LPs have maple necks.
Whats the point of all this? An earlier reviewer stated that the JB would not be a good choice for a maple necked guitar, and perhaps he's right. I wounder what my JB would sound like in a Gibson.
In any case, I don't thind the JB is right for me, and so the search goes on.

Comments: I play mostly Fender Guitars, with single coils and wanted an LP as an alternative. I'm starting to believe, that I will never get the classic "Les Paul" sound out of my epi, since the neck material has such a large contribution to the overall sound. To tell you the truth, with the JB in the bridge, it sounds like a set-neck, FAT Strat. I really love the sound, but it doesn't sound like a Les Paul.
For now, I going back to the Bill Lawrence (OBL) twin blade Humbucker that I bought off ebay for $5.00; Hot and Ballsy....what I thought the JB would deliver..............Very happy with sound of the '59 in the neck, however.

Comments: This pickup came stock in the bridge of my USA Kelly, I thought it sounded kinda thin from day one. Now that I have been playing with it for about a year, I really don't like it in my Kelly.
In alder guitars, the JB is too thin, and has the "icepick to the forehead" high attack; A Korina or Mahogany guitar would be sound great with it.
Barring that observation, this is a GREAT all around rock pickup really. Balanced pretty well with a slight mid high spike-which would give you great lead tone.
I will be replacing it, and if the wood did not give it the tone it has, I would leave it in place.

Tone: Lacks a warm bottom, middy and fairly trebbly too.
Sonic evaluation: '97 USA Hamer Standard- Mesa Rect-O-Verb Combo- Fender Super Champ- Randall RG150 Combo. This is a very popular PUP eventhough I don't really care for it. On the Good side: You can get pinch harmonics without even trying (But I guess that's not all good). And if you play alot of solos it works very well. You can also get some good heavy metal "chunk" out of it. On the Bad side: You get pinch harmonics way too easily, and it's not a very "warm" sound. I really don't believe this PUP works for the blues or bluesy rock. It'll work well if you play harder styles of music. Just not for me.

Comments: Over my 13 years of playing, I have tried this PUP in many different variations of guitars and amps; many of these guitars came stock (or had been retrofitted) with this PUP. I can honestly say that I don't care for it, it just isn't the sound for me. I believe that the higher output and lack of bass make it a fairly "edgy" PUP. This one came stock in a USA Hamer guitar and has a bit more output than the normal ones. Hamer used to have all of their Duncan PUPS made specifically for them. All the Duncan equipped USA Hamer guitars that I've owned have had PUPS that seem to have been given a few more winds than their store bought conterparts (is this an accident?). I think I'm going to try a Custom 5, I've had good results with that one. A "6" because of the "edgy" character associated with it. But it would be good for aggressive rock styles.

Perceived output level: About the same as most stock pickups. Although it lists the output as about the same as the Seymour Duncan Distortion (SH-6), it is definitely not as "metal" as the SH-6. The 500T even seemed to have more output than the JB.
Tone: Has a trebly, middy type sound that I would not catagorize as "warm". Not bad, but not the warmth and distortion I expected. I thought the tone would resemble that of the SH-6, but it doesn't
Sonic evaluation: I have this put in my Gibson Gothic Explorer and run it through a LANEY GH100TI TONY IOMMI HEAD. I also throw a BOSS SD-1 in front to "slam" the tubes. This pickup sounded ok to me, but it didn't blow me away like I thought it would. It has a very basic sound that didn't really impress me.
Single notes seemed to sound good and sustain for what seemed like forever, but when hitting chords I get this slightly processed type sound. It is hard to describe but it just sounds kind of "fake".
When I first got my guitar back from the store, the pickup was very close to the strings because the guy lowered my action. At this setting, the pickup sounded like an icepick and I was immediately let down. I lowered the pickup and was able to get a very usable sound, but like I said, it was nothing to write home about.
I also noticed that this pickup was very noisy. Even playing through a POD with the noise gate on, I was getting these irritating noises.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I like playing hard rock and metal. Although this pickup can do metal and hard rock, I think you have to have a certain setup to achieve this. It just feels like you have to work so hard to get a great metal sound out of it. The Seymour Duncan Distortion, and EMG-81 that I previously owned could do metal and hard rock without much prodding.

Comments: I am getting this pickup out of my guitar as soon as possible. I won't buy it again. I have been playing for almost 20 years. I tried to like this pickup, but I was forcing it. The pickup is just average. Nothing special. I would pick a Gibson 496 pickup over this. It is just not me. I think I'll throw a SH-6 in there.

Reason for pickup change: The original minihumbucker lacked clout. Great for clean parts but needed external help to overdrive my Hiwatt DR103. The JB had a great reputation for power and clarity and to optimise its versatility I wired it to a pair of Yamahan push/push tone pots to coil tap and/or reverse its pahse with the neck p/u. Results include greater all out gain, excellent interaction with the neck Armstrong both in- and out-of-phase. The tapped mode is brighter than the mini h/b that the SD replaced. It's a corking pickup. Now over fifteen years old it still delivers the goods. I have never ever considered replacing it. It is THAT good!

Perceived output level: More output than a PAF but with a strong mid-range and great clarity. Vastly superior to a Di Marzio Super II in terms of power and versatility.
Tone: Solid, tight bottom end; mid, mid and more mids; crisp treble which becomes searing in tapped mode. Roll off the volume and the tapped mode becomes very glassy. Try and convince some folk that they are hearing a Les Paul in this set up and disbelief sets in very quickly.
Sonic evaluation: Gibson Les Paul with SD JB into either Hiwatt DR103 and 4x12 OR Marshall MG30DFX (depending on venue). The Hiwatt and JB were made for one another. Wind up the gain and the master volume and listen to the Seymour sing. Harmonics slice the top of your head off. Simply an awesome combination. Roll back the guitar volume and the clean tones never disappoint. With the Marshall 30 watt combo, the JB makes a nonsense of the overdrive channel, it simply overwhelms it and all subtlety is lost in an overdriven mush. Stick to the clean channel and use a ProCo RAT (uh huh, another JB influence!) to graduate levels of overdrive and distortion. The Jeff Beck, into a Marshall (clean) via a RAT makes one of the best guitar sounds in our little musical circus. The tapped mode offers up all manner of possibilities, which is compounded by the phase reversal options. Probably the most versatile sounding guitar I have - although it won't take on a Strat on its own territory. If I can only take one guitar to a gig or jam, it is almost always the JB armoured Gold Top. Draw your own conclusions.....
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Blues/Rock. By definition this is Les Paul and British valve [tube] amps blasting it out. The JB has added extra dimensions to my sound and was worth every penny. In conjunction with a PAF it appears to achieve a very even balance across the sound spectrum. I wouldn't be inclined to use the JB in any other than the bridge position. It is simply a high class act.

Comments: No doubt. If my JB died or was otherwise ruined I'd have another without a moment's hesitation. I have tried Di Marzio, Kent Armstrong, Bill Lawrence and Schaller pickups. Only the Jeff Beck pickup has remained in place since it was fitted.
It is a glorious piece of hardware that not only works brilliantly on its own, it interacts with the neckpick up for thick in-phase sounds and classic Peter Green out-of-phase sounds. I opted for the JB because it offered coil tapping and phasing options and the promise of Alnico magnets. I have not been disapointed.

Tone: It has excellent tone, excellent clarity, although, a little less bass than the stock pickup, but i still love it.
Sonic evaluation: I play through a Fender Deluxe 90 (haha, yes that's right) it's one of the better solid states out there, believe me, but i have played it through a Marshall dsl50 at the music store, and it sounds even more awesome through that. If you buy a gibson, make sure it doesn't have the 490/498 combination because they suck. Get a les paul with burstbuckers or something. But the JB is excellent, perfect harmonics and sustain, perfect feedback control. I love it.

Comments: If it were stolen? I'd like to meet the person who successfully steals a pickup out of a guitar without ruining it. I'll be putting this pickup in my other guitars when i get the money! Been playing 8 years...I haven't found 'the sound' yet....hopefully I will someday, maybe if i get the right amp i will. I didn't really try any other pickups, i saw this one in the store, and said...hmm...seymour duncan....it's pretty cheap, free installation, yea...i'll get it. And I must say i'm satisfied and happy! Comments: i was hoping to get a really noticable volume change, but it sounds a lot like my stock pickup when it comes to volume. I wasn't really looking for a really hot pickup but i thought that even going with the jb i might get a real noticable boost in volume. I'm pretty satisfied with it, it's very clear, it adds balls to the clean channel. I didn't really think about that i might have to change the settings on my amp to acomidate for this pickup, but it's no big deal, it's very versatile. after all the king does use it. pretty happening pickup for it's price, i'm not really bummed with it, i've only had it a day or two, and i've been churning out the sounds of evil already.

Perceived output level: Hot but not as hot as I had expected. I was expecting it to set the amp on fire - instead i got a very balanced, oped sounding pickup that cuts through the mix well.
Tone: Hot and trebly - cuts through the mix- especially when playing live with a powerfull drummer, a muscular bassist and a vocalist on an ego volume trip.
Sonic evaluation: I Play through a Crate VC3112 with a celestion V30 in it and man o man does this thing rip. The amp has to be cranked but when it is - oh man oman watch out. The tone is golden when soloing and the it sustains forever. My band lets me take longer solo breaks now - they like the sound that much. Oh and I am only usin a crybaby in the chain.

Comments: I wanna check out the DiMarzio ToneZone and the Rio Grande BBQ as well see how they hold up. This pickup is the ultimate soloing PU, but I was expecting more output i guess. And i get more harmonics on my strat than this thing. But it is a very balanced, open and clear sounding pickup that distorts very smoothly and sustains well. Im still looking for "that" tone. Perceived output level: On the hotter side - similar to gibson 500T.
Tone: Unusual sound - very smooth, but somewhat "tubby" - lots of bass and low-midrange, upper mids are scooped a bit, articulate top end
Sonic evaluation: I'm running this pickup into a Randall V-Max head. This pickup lacks the low end clarity you get from, say, EMGs, but the top end is very nice - produces smooth lead tones with plenty of bite. However, when you go to start riffing/palm muting, it falls apart - low end lacks the chunkiness you need for heavy music, and the bass is real flabby - no definition. Great pickup for someone who's into 70's rock, though - lead tones are real nice. If you're looking for a Metallica/Testament/Cannibal Corpse sound with a lot of palm muting, this is not the pickup for you - it's too flabby in the low end.

Comments: I'm planning on replacing it - I love the lead tones, but as soon as I go to play some chunky riffs or chugging palm-muted passages, it looses definition and sounds real mushy. Comments: I had this pickup in a Japanese Epiphone Coronet and it was a tone monster. In my Dean, 25 1/2 scale it was too trebly and bright. This pickup is perfect for a Gibson scale or the short-neck Fenders.

Sonic evaluation: I'm using an Ibanez S470 with a blocked floyd rose (tone killer) and a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier through a Marshall 1960A 4x12.
When I first bought this pickup I had a Marshall AVT50H (g'head, laugh it up). After that experience I've gained that valuable knowledge that this pickup does not take well to high gain Solid-State amps. It turned the amp into even more of a static blasting toneless waste of money.
With the Recto, it behaved better but still isnt exactly what I wanted. The main problem is that the bottom end has a tendancy to break up and sound aweful. Otherwise it has very good presence and nice definition. It performs adequately with no distortion but I wasn't blown away.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play melodic hardcore-emo, it's hard to say whether it matches or not, I guess it doesn't really. It's meant for the bridge.

Comments: Some people really say this isn't hot enuff. Most of them are probably going for the kind of 'screaming wall of sound' like bands like Slipknot and Meshuggah and shit have. Comments: Installed in the bridge position with a .022 uF capacitor in a 500 K Ohm tone pot. I have an unusual setup in this guitar which has two tone pots (neck and bridge), a 500 K Ohm pan pot and one 500K volume pot. Using the pan pot to 'tranverse' between the neck and bridge pickups, I am impressed with the tonal range. However, the Jazz Neck PU (see my other review) seems to have enough guts to do the job alone. However, the JB does add interesting, increasing shades of high end 'edge'.
Unless you have seriously gigged before, I think what most people don't realize is that there is a very big difference between playing in a 'lab' environment versus a club jammed with noise and people. In the lab the JB doesn't seem to add much. However, if you do gig in loud bands in loud crowded bars, the JB will probably 'deliver the goods' - meaning it will cut above the din when soloing. I am glad I installed it in this guitar, however since I don't play the bars much anymore, it is really there for 'overdrive' if I want it. Decent general purpose 'solo' pickup. Probably won't get much use for my style of playing tho. Therefore I cannot give it a good a rating as I would like.
Also, a word of advice - I played in loud club bands from the late 60s up to the early 80s before 'retiring' from the 'biz'. Consequently, I did lose a little bit of my hearing in both ears. Not a lot, but enough that I need the TV up a little louder, and say 'huh?' sometimes. If you do play the club circuit on a consistent basis with loud bands - do yourself a favor and use ear plugs. There is no use in losing some of God's wonderful gift of hearing - especially if you ARE of all things a musician.

Tone: extremely well balanced with a slight mid-ranged bump
Sonic evaluation: I use this with a carvin vintage tweed and the matching 4 - 10 cab. I'll use a touch of overdrive from a boss sd1 or a dano daddy o or a ts -7. That about wraps it up. I could not be more pleased. Combined with the custom custom I find a huge pallet of useful tones. I don't know what more anyone could ask for, I have yet to play a club date where someone doesn't come up and compliment me on the sound of the guitar.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I think this would be suitable for most applications and in either position. I previously had it the bridge position and had no complaints. The only reason I changed was that I happen to acquire the custom custom and it was just way to much for a neck position. I installed the and the rest is tonal history.

Sonic evaluation: First of all I'd like to point out that S.D. DO NOT MAKE A JEFF BECK MODEL. They told me themselves. JB Stands for Jazzy/Bluesy - nothing else !
This is a good attempt & has some interesting qualities. For example, the sound is nice & smooth & sparkly, but the warmth is just not there.
Pretty good for solos as it cut's through so well, but split it and the sound is just too tinny, at least in conjunction with the other pick ups on my guitar ( SSL-1 & Hot Rails neck ). Even with the hot rails switched in with it, the sound is too brash, & the Hot Rails is VERY rounded.
Impressive in some aspects, but overall insatisfactory due to the balance. Rolling off the treble with the tone control just kills the sound, & EQ doesn't help much either.
I'll be changing it for a Custom Custom TB11 ASAP !!

I've been playing for 25 years, & have a pretty good experience of pick-ups. There's better out there.
Had an SH4 in my guitar which didn't quite line up with the strings, so I bought a TB4 trembucker version. For some reason, perhaps because of the longer shape, this was even worse with even higher treble output - hidious !
I wish it had a bit more natural warmth as then it would be a lot better.
Might work well through a really muddy amp/speaker combo.
I would not buy it again !

Moderately high output, but not unreasonable. Not a 'distortion' type as such. Has a nice vowelly quality (not as much as the Custom Custom in my '76 Destroyer, but it's there). Doesn't overwhelm you with output, but does ha a bit of kick. Bottom end is fairly tight.

Comments: If it were stolen, i'd probably get it again. probably. i own an epi SG, a fernandez dragonfly, and this guitar, and it sounds good. ive been playing for about 6 years and i think that this pickup is good for anyone who wants their tone to CUT through the mix. This will not give you creamy clapton & eric johnson tone, nor will it give you stunning BB King tone. It might not even give you Green Day tone. it gives you nice, nice, nice highs but an overall cutoff on bass.

Tone: Very bright, sounds great for all out metal and anything where a very trebly, bright sound is wanted.
Sonic evaluation: When I play my E. Les Paul I play it through my Crate GFX-212 and NS-2 noise suppresor. The NS-2 eliminates to noise, so the JB Trem. is left to do its work, which is creating some good, loud music. They sound good for neck or bridge postion, and sound great split as well.

Comments: I'm delighted to have the JB Trembuckers instead of the muddy, noisy Epiphone pickups. It made my E. Les Paul worth playing. My main guitar is a PRS Custom 22, but the E. Les Paul is a very reliable backup with the JB Trems installed. Compared with my Dragon II's in my PRS, the JB's have an ordinary tone. True the JB's are very bright and clear, but the Dragon II's have a very unique, full tone and a much richer sound. Still a great buy for Hard Rock players in need of a pickup to enhance a cheaper guitar.

It makes it hard to get a good rockin crunch down low sometimes but as long as you've got a decent amp/effects it shouldn't be a problem. The tone for clean has got to be the best I've ever heard.
Sonic evaluation: I have 2 ways of playing,
Guitar->Boss MT2->DS1->OS2->Digitech RP200->Yamaha660>2 Peavey TLS4 + 2 CGM 1x12's
Or..
...->effects->Peavey MP4->Radio shack 1x10-miced into-Yamaha660...
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play lots of hard Rock, mostly lead. I'd say it's a very good pickup for that style.

Comments: I've been playing about 2 years now and take this for what it's worth. This pickup is great, not perfect, but definately great. I first got it for my Epi 58 V. The tone was somewhat similar to the stock pickup but it had a brighter attack which I really liked! It's hard for me to control the Lower tones in some riffs but If you scoop it enough it sounds great. But if you just like to keep your mids cut way down all the time then I don't think this Pickup is for you. The mids give a real punch and thats what makes this pickup good. This is a very clear pickup, not harsh at all in my opinion (or definition of harsh for that matter). It is perfect for playing clean although you may want to consider turning your low's up quite a bit. The main reason I bought this pickup was for lead and Mid-range riffs which it rocks at. The harmonics and overtones seriously rock!! It gives solo's quite a bit of definition and tone in the high-end, my only beef about it is I can't get that bassy popping sound that makes shredding sound cool. I suppose the tone is good enough to cover for that though. If it were lost or stolen I'd probably get it again, maybe try something else just cuz I've "been there" but now that I've used a JB and grown to love the beatiful leads I can get from it, it would be hard to think of not having one in one of my guitars. :S
