Installed neck and bridge models in 2009 Les Paul Traditional. Replaced the stock Gibson 57 Classic set. I changed pickups because I have grown to appreciate Seymour Duncan pickups over the years and still have not heard a Gibson pickup that I like.

Output level is low to moderate, certainly within the PAF range. Both the neck and bridge pickups have more than enough output to get nasty, but you also get access to very nice clean tones as well. I purchased these pickups for one thing: range. I used to use hotter bridge pickups in the past and would pair them with various Duncan neck models (Jazz/Screamin Demon, PG/Custom Custom, 59/JB, and PG/JB). This time I decided to go with a Pearly Gates set for more of a vintage tone and I could not be happier. I don't get the same amount of power that I used to have with the JB or Custom Custom in the bridge position, but the sound is more useable. I can go from almost twangy to heavily distorted, and can cover everything in-between. I did not have the same amount of range or flexibility with hotter bridge models.
I am using the Pearly Gates set in my new Les Paul Traditional. I play through a 1974 Deluxe Reverb amp and use a Crunch Box and a FullDrive 2 for all dirty sounds.
I find the Pearly Gates pickups to be well balanced. The pickups cut through the live mix extremely well. Sustain is superb, and harmonics are abundant. The tone does lean toward the bright end of the spectrum, but the treble response is pleasant and is not of the icepick variety. Sometimes I roll the tone knob on the bridge pickup back to 4 for more creamy tones. Other times I roll the tone knob to ten for more sparkle, harmonics, and cut. I love the range of the pickups, they suit my various moods very well. Another important factor for me is the mid eq of the pickup. Other PAF style pickups I have tried have been too scooped sounding in the mids, the Pearly Gates pickups are just right.
I play in a modern worship band at my church, but also play classic rock, blues, and 80's metal. Major influences include the Edge, Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, and various shredders from the 80's. I find the Pearly Gates pickups to be a good match for everything I do. I would not recommend them for the detuned metal-riffing that all of the kids are doing these days. They sound fantastic in my Les Paul. I have another Les Paul on order and already have a Pearly Gates set for that one as well.

I have been playing for various churches and worship teams for over 14 years now. My instrument of choice is the Les Paul, but I began my musical journey with Stratocasters and Hendrix tunes. I have owned many Les Pauls and Les Paul-style instruments over the last several years. Nearly all of them had Seymour Duncan pickups. After using hotter bridge pickups for several years I decided to try a more vintage sounding set for my current Les Paul. I have been extremely happy with the results. My focus used to be power, now my focus is range and flexibility. The Pearly Gates pickups provide plenty of power and also give me access to cleaner and more complex sounds that were unavailable with the higher-output pickups I used in the past. I have used the Pearly Gates set extensively at home and on stage and feel that my search for Les Paul pickups is over.

The Pearly Gates are passive humbuckers with 4 conducter wiring. There are lots of different ways they can be wired. Seymour Duncan provides common wiring configurations with the pickups.

I installed these in the bridge and neck of my Dean Evo Special Select. The stock pickups with this guitar were lifeless and dull. The guitar itself is a quality instrument that plays so easily, that I decided to invest in these pickups.
I chose the Pearly Gates after listening to demos at Seymour Duncan's website.

These pickups are awesome. The wiring for my Dean allows coil-split and out-of-phase settings, and I can get quite a Strat-like sound from them. Otherwise, in full humbucking mode, these pickups really give me a fat, classic 70's rock sound that I love.
I play lots of different types of music, and use this guitar with various amps. I don't use a lot of effects. I find I can get the sound I want with little effort.

If my Dean were stolen now, I'd be quite upset. I've been playing over 30 years, have other guitars, but this one has become my favorite. I'm considering buying one for my Schecter in the bridge position, but have not decided what single coil I would buy for the neck pickup.
Make sure you have your guitar's wiring diagram before you replace the pickups if you are going to do this yourself! The wire colors on my Dean do not match the 'standard' Seymour Duncan color codes.

4 conductor passive humbuckers with nickel covers. Output readings are lower than Duncan's advertised 7.3k neck & 8.3 bridge. Mine measure 7.0k neck & 7.8k bridge. They sounds louder than those readings suggest though.

Fitted to my 2003 Tokai Love Rock LS70 Goldtop - a Japanese LP, mahogany body & set mahogany neck, maple top. Matched pair bridge & neck. Replacing the stock Tokai Mk III pickups, though I did briefly try an SD '59 neck humbucker.
For some reason, Billy F. Gibbons isn't listed as a user of these pickups, even though Seymour Duncan apparently designed them for him, to replicate the sound from his '59 LP Standard, Pearly Gates. Perhaps Billy has gone off them?

At home I play through a Cornell Romany Plus 10w Class A valve amp. With the band I use a Fender '63 Vibroverb RI. I play mainly blues, old soul (Stax, Motown etc.) & a some rock too. Picking up this guitar now makes me want to catch Billy's sound - is it my imagination or am I getting those pinched harmonics more often than I used to manage?
I briefly had an SD '59 in the neck position, & (as a Strat player for 25 years) I felt that it was a little muddy. The PG is just what I wanted from a neck humbucker, there is an openness in the top end that I don't usually hear from HBs. It's not as if they sound like a Strat neck pickup, but there's just enough openness to make them feel very responsive, even when played clean.
I fitted coil taps through push/pull pots, but I don't think I'll be using them much. But the out-of-phase wiring is excellent - Peter Green tone!
I'm wary of pickups with too much top end, or too harsh a top end. For me, these PGs get it just right, there's no harshness, they overdrive well, but they sounds good clean too, specially the neck position. Probably not a good choice for a bright instrument though, great for a Les Paul, but I wonder if I would like them on a Strat? I doubt it.
The output readings of 7.0k & 7.8k makes it look like they're quite weak, but that's not the impression that I get when playing them. I would say they are moderately loud, punchy, pokey, open & articulate, with maybe a rude edge to them. Overall - I'm very impressed.

If stolen, I would probably replace them. I'm toying with the idea of getting a set for my 335 (Tokai ES130), but maybe they wouldn't suit a 335 so well?
I've been playing for about 25 years, mainly Strats & Teles. I've only recently got the LP & I'm enjoying it. I still prefer a Strat & a Tele for gigs though.

This pickup is installed in the neck and bridge position on my Japanese Epiphone Scroll (SC 450). They replaced the original pickups which I found lacking in dynamics and tone. The guitar's original pickups did not complement the sustain and bite that this guitar has (all maple body & neck with rosewood fingerboard).

The PGs have a significantly larger output when compared to the original pickups; even the single coil selection sounds good - not the thin and brittle sound I got earlier.
I play my guitar through an old solid state marshall (5010) and I don't use effects. These pickups are incredible: they complement the guitar's tonal characteristics and realise its sound potential. Neck position sounds full, warm yet well-defined and the bridge position is bright with a real bite to it! The pickups respond well to dynamic play and the fairly bright tone is easily controlled with the tone knob.
I don't really play a particular style and focus mainly on practising technique these days - and these pickups have certainly open my eyes to what you can do with a guitar without any effects!

I have owned effects in the past, but at present I do not have anything other than my guitar and marshall amp. I would certainly buy these pickups again if I had reason to do so - I am impressed with seymour duncan quality! I have had a telecaster with lace sensor pickups, but I prefer the PGs - the warmth and dynamics are superb! I can't think of a better pickup at this moment. I was advised to have these pickups installed in my guitar by an excellent repair shop in Arnhem - and I am totally satisfied. I do wonder why pickups are as expensive as they are though... !

The BB 2 was to shrill in the highs for me; no balance with the neck. Wanted it "fatter" in the bridge.

Unreal fatness; all I can say. The treble is high, like other people havve mentioned, but the balance is rounded enough where you can control the tone better when rolling the knob down on said knob. I use a Fender Blues Junior, and the break-up is very good on this little amp; I first played it on a Diezel Herbert, so you can imagine the HUGE difference, but the PG works fine in the BJ as well. I think on its own for leads, and in the mid position with the Alnico II is fantastic, as the kind person below mentioned. These two PUPs are Reeses Peanut Butter Cups: two tastes that go great together!
I play Hard Rock, Classic, Metal: that part of the tone is in your hands alone. A good tube amp helps. I go straight through the amp with very few boxes: mainly a Line 6 ??ber Metal, EHX Small Clone, and a Dunlop CryBaby Classic with Fasel. I think this PUP is great if you like the raw, bluesy sound.

Been Playin 20 yrs. on n off, but know what I like. I worry about the treble getting on my nerves, but as the kind person below said, the Alnico II in the neck with the PG creates a balance that makes you know you got the right thing! The Pearly Gates IS the definitive vintage American Rock sound in my opinion. It works alone. I don't play as well as Dickey and Warren, so two of them would bore me out; I need some smoothness in the neck. If destroyed, will replace.
Check out the SD homepage, and match up. The Gibby BBs are great, but as you know, the tone hounds that we all are know that the LP are great in constuction, but the PUPs are not what makes 'em for th most part. Any player will eventaually upgrade, and that's the fun. PGs in the bridge just FATTEN up that weak BB 2 sound...check it out: If you are hankerin' for the grease!

Pearly gates in the bridge position is a very good choice for the style I play (more than 20 years that I play that kind of music and I'm never bored).
But I think that I obtained the absolutely perfect sound combining the Pearly Gates with the Alnico II pro: I was surprised hearing that the mid position (both pickups) with both pickups splitted on single coil gives the sound I have ever dreamed...fantastic
I found what I was looking for!!!..the real brit crunch but a little heavier...lovely!

alot of reviews say that this pickup is definitely not a heavy pickup. oddly enough, i play primarily prog-metal with the damn thing!
has a reaaally full sound, especially when you compliment it with a tube screamer or equivalent (in my case the zoom g9.2tt).
This little bastard has AWESOME sustain, it gives a really fluid sound to arpeggios and scaled runs. CLEAN, CRISP and ARTICULATE!
when played clean, its pretty treble heavy. however, this seems to be the case with most of my other bridge buckers. if your guitar has a tone knob, this shouldnt inconvienience you much. i prefer using it along with the duncan 59' reverse polarity in my neck pos (i swear b.b. king just played something out of my amp...)
i still use this thing for all my studio lead work

if this thing got demolished, i would hold a vigil, then pick another one up.
obviously from everyone else's reviews you can get a classic rock/blues sound out of it.
what you can take from this review,
the thing can easily do metal, so long as your not lazy and actually hit your notes. crisp articulation and liquid sustain are any metal lead player's best friends.
ive been playing for 11 years, had this pickup for 4 and its still my favorite to play.
ive got a Dimarzio Evo 2 in an HM strat, and it sounded a whole lot thinner and weaker than this. as a result, this guitar has been banished to the guitar rack (damn shame).
This thing is also my number one compared to an emg 81 in my jackson rr24. why? sharper edge and waaaaaay cleaner articulation. remember, i do prog metal. heaviness is definitely there but this thing is BRIGHT!
for a non high-output pickup, those sly Seymour Duncan executives had me confused...

I put this pickup in a Gibson Les Paul Special. Gives it a sweet tone! I paired the pickup with another SD Classic. These replaced the standard Gibson ceramic humbuckers. My main reason for buying it was to get that ZZ Top Pearly Gates tone. This guitar does not quite get there, but it is an amazing tone either way.

Much louder than the stock Gibson. Mine gives a crystal clear tone throughout all levels. Distorts nicely as well. Definitely not a "metal" style pickup more for classic rock or blues. I play a lot of classic rock and it is a perfect match for that. I mounted mine in the bridge, have not tried the neck version.

I have been playing for a very long time 20 plus years. Thsi is by far the best pickup I have ever had. I did just buy a LTD EC-1000 with Seymour Duncans in it and I will judget hem later. But for now this is the best.

Play it through a 1979 Marshall JMP 100watt amp.
I have a lot of guitars and amps, like: Gibson ES 369, Gibson Marauder, Gibson LP Special, Gibson ES 335 dot, Gretsch tennessian, Hagstrom p64 Deluxe, Epi Crestwood, fender blues deluxe amp, Marshall JCM 800 Slash amp etc..)but the combination of the Semi hollow ES 335, the pearly gates and the amp is the best i have ever heard!!
The tone is middy and a bit bassy, but dont get me wrong here...
It's definatly a good pickup for leads, high tones just cut through!

Output level is slightly higher than the PAF pickup. It sounds great with a Krank Distortus Maximus distortion box, Hermida Mosferatu, and the Durham Sex Drive or Durham Mucho Boosto. The 4-conductor wiring enables coil tapping, which is essential for those of us who want to be able to choose single coil clarity or humbucker overdrive at the flick of a switch. Excellent for blues, blues-rock, classic rock wailing.

Pleasing balanced sound with both maple and mahogany solid bodies. Excellent note bloom on solos. One of the best of breed for traditional rock and roll genre, and fairly versatile with coil tap options. Will make even crappy guitars sound like money.

Given the needs of shredders and thrashers in the last decade these seem be viewed as old school, iconic, the 70s-80s LP sound I guess. Still, a great all around HB if you're not into that hot ceramic thing. You can play them all day and not get bored. They balance well between neck and bridge, I have a "matched" non-PG in one of my guitars and it doesn't sound nearly as good as two PGs in the other..they make a nice set. Change in volume or tone control yields a big change in sound and dynamics. Only HB I've tried that rivals the overall playbility characteristics of PGs are Gibson Classic 57s. Never muddy, and they love pedals behind them. One of best for what they do, fair price.

Output:medium, a little louder than stock. Currently using a Carvin MTS3212 compbo amp with JJ tubes stuff inside and a compressor in front to drive the signal. The PG has less mids than a Duncan Distortion, but it has a nice upper mid presence which is exactly what the Epiphone Ultra needs. The chambered body has a LOT of natural midrange so a big mid pickup, like the Seymour Duncan Screamin' Demon simply won't work well. With the PG I can dial just a little off the highs with the tone knob and the sound is cutting (through effects) yet still sweet. For rock, a little country, and heavy metal, the Pearly Gates is a great pickup!

I'd get it again, and again, and probably once more after that too, should I be thrice cursed! I've been playing badly since 1987, over half my life so far. I've also tried a JB and the Screamin' Demon in this guitar. Both had a little too much midrange, although the JB is a cool-sounding, it didn't have enough "balls". The Screamin' Demon had enough of those, but too way too much midrange too. I'm satisfied for the moment, but have a new Vox AD120VTH head on the way, and may want something a little brighter later, like Gibson's 498T. I'll just have to see how it all sounds together.

Great tone. Neck is about what I expected - mellow, but still playable. Bridge is good for lead and cuts very well. Together they sound even better balancing out to a nice rythm/lead sound.
Play through a Marshall DSL50 and a Mesa Boogie standard 4x12 vintage 30 speakers. Only have an MXR KFK-1 EQ and a BOSS NS-2 Noise suppressor pedal.
I must admit I just bought them and installed them so haven't played them for too long, but so far I'm impressed. These are the first Duncan pickups I've ever used and I must say they are wonderful. The quality of wiring is same as Schaller pickups I had, but they had top notch wiring as well. I tried a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge first because I had an Epiphone les paul I had tried that in and it sounded fine. Completely different in the Heritage. Sounded too bassy and little too much output for it. It gave me all the Rock sounds I was looking for - AC/DC, KISS, Van Halen, ZZ Top, all of the older classic rock etc.. I really wasn't expecting the change to make that much difference, but these pickups break up much easier than my Schaller pickups and even the Super Distortion. That's the kind of distortion anyone should want to have and I'm glad I finally found it.

If I lost or had these pickups stolen I would definately buy more of these, and I would recommend them to anyone at least as far as my Mahogany bodied, maple top guitar goes.
I've been playing for about 5 years and have been through a few amps including a Stilleto Deuce head. All along I thought the sound I was looking for was in the amp itself. I didn't take the time to try a different brand of pickup and this is the one that gave me the sound I've been looking for all along. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good Rock sound. They will literally melt your face off. My best investment yet in sound.

Tone: On THIS GUITAR (one piece mahogany body, mahogany set neck with rosewood fingerboard and Tune-o-Matic bridge) it was nicely balanced with tame-able treble.
Sonic evaluation: My own design 2 channel 50W combo amp (1 channel Super Reverb) other channel Matchless EF86 - alike) with Super Reverb Output stage. Single Celestion Vintage 30 12" speaker. Usually just guitar into amp. I can, at last, play using the bridge pickup for an hour without stopping or swopping. It has a much "flatter" frequency response in this rather dark sounding guitar but in a brighter one the treble could be to much. Sounds way way better than the JB4 through a Tube Screamer. Good note definition, could do with a little more bass end so hieght adjustment is required to compensate.
Balances nicely with GS neck pickup (9.1K) giving a good varienty of sounds. Very pleased - fitted now for 3 months.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Works well with THIS guitar - read other peoples reviews as well.

Comments: Still in the honeymoon period but very pleased with the change and now play bridge only a lot - quite a change. Works well into either channel of amp, which is fairly trebly in the first place. Would buy it again (flinching at UK price of ?100 new however). My conclusion (limited experience here) is that lower output humbuckers produce much better (harmonics/balance/..) sounds - You can after all always boost the signal if you need to.

Sonic evaluation: First of all, I'm talking about the stock Alnico2 Duncan PEARLY GATES, not talking about the plus. The pickup is on a 1994 Fender Am Std Strat (alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard). My amp is a Laney VC30 210, it's a small vintage style all tube amp (except for reverb and loop, but that's another story :D). The amp matches greatly with strats, and I have to say that the PG is able to load the amp just perfectly. It produces some kind of pre-dist midboost, which is just perfect for a good rock crunchy sound. On the tone controls of the amp I boost bass and highs to 7 and do a little cut on the mids (4). Cuts through like hell. I recently installed an home made Blender pot and mixing the PG with the neck single produces a very good Rickenbacker sound (amazing!!). Unfortunately the 4th position is not really the best, but of course it's impossible that a split PAF sounds like a strat, so...
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play mainly Rock music with my bands and I really like the good old stuff, from Hendrix to Van Halen. But I kinda got tired of humbuckers on strats. I'm waiting to get a Twang Banger.

Comments: I would not buy it again, but just because I tend to prefer singles, not surely because it sounds bad.
I've been playing 13 years and I hope I always will!! I own this Strat and a Korean replica (which sounds killer, to me :DD), a Laney VC30 amp, and several pedals that I use depending on the situations. Usually I just plug into my Rat and then straight to the amp. I use the rat to get a more distorted sound for solos, my main sound is the drive channel of the amp and the volume and tone knobs on the guitar.
I really love the middy sound and the great dynamic response, especially for early Van Halen sounds.
Compared to the JB they sound really different, anyway the PG is more focused on the midrange, while the JB on my strat sounded way too bright and confused, and last but not least the JB overpowered terribly my poor little single coils. I chose it because I wanted a low output warm pickup, and it does it pretty good.
It's good the way it is, a good PAF style pickup, nothing more nothing less, as every Duncan pickup I've tried.
I'm always searching for that sound, but this pickup led me to a good one, a really good sound. It's been a good and trusty friend!

Perceived output level: A few jalapenos, but nothing to make you rush to the water jug.
Tone: The neck is smooth, and smoky. The bridge pickup snarls, but is throaty, warm and round.
Sonic evaluation: Gibson Les Paul through an Egnater TOL combo. Effects are only an occasional Fulltone Wah.
I really, really like these pickups. I changed out because the neck pickup (490R) was way too dark and muddy. It had no character. The Pearly Gates neck pickup is what I want. It's smooth and mellow, but with a sweet spot. It's not muddy and sludgey.
The bridge pickup is really nice. The 498T was way too harsh and thin. The neck pickup definitely has a sharp bite, but it also has soft, moist lips and a thick warm tongue. It's a great feeling . . . I mean tone.
Clean, the neck pickup sounds nice. It yields a woody tone with a round sound coated with a slight gliss. The bridge is a bit thin and brittle when used alone. But when used in combination with the neck pickup, the two sound nice together played clean.
I've read that some say these are harsh or too bright. I can understand that if you've become accustomed to the darker tones that have gained favor lately in metal bands with guitars tuned down somewhere between a step and two and a half steps.
If, however, the tones to which your ear has become accustomed include those cranked out by Billy Gibbons in the 70s and 80s, Duane Allman and Dicky Betts in the 60s and 70s, Gary Rossington in the 70s and 80s, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford in the 70s and Neil Schon in the 70s (but not the 80s or 90s), then these puppies are right on the freakin' money.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Perfect match for bluesy rock and classic rock and hard rock.

Comments: I own a lot of guitars, and some of them have interesting pickups. One has vintage Joe Bardens. Another has a Gibson minihumbucker in the neck, a single coil in the middle and a humbucker in the bridge. These are very, very good pickups.
The Pearly Gates are a great replacement for stock Les Paul pickups. They will definitely open up new avenues of tone. For instance, I can play through both pickups clean and get away with a passable Mark Knopfler on "Sultans of Swing" (but only when I don't screw up the G to D arpeggio in the second solo, which only happens half the time, but I guess I can't blame that on my pickups.) Though the tone is thicker, because the pickups produce a warm woody character, I can get away with it. With the 490R/498T, I wouldn't even try.
These are the pickups that should have come with that $2,000 Les Paul. They are the best $180 I have spent on gear. I couldn't be happier.

Perceived output level: Honestly, I have little to compare them to in terms of how hot they are as I don?t play many guitars one right after the other. To me, these pickups are pretty hot. They are not quite as hot as a '99 Les Paul Standard with stock pickups.
Tone:
Sonic evaluation: I have received so many compliments on the tone of my guitar (with these pickups) from very accomplished and active players, many who have been playing longer than I have been alive. As stated, my main guitar is a 2001 Epiphone Sheraton II. In addition to replacing the stock pickups with the Pearly Gates, I have had the p/u selector switch and jack changed to better quality electronics, and have installed a 70s Bigsby B12 with a Chet Atkins arm. This is the tremolo with the stabilizer bar that the strings run under. I intend on upgrading the tuners in the future, buy for now they suffice. I use Elixir 10s: they are worth it. I realize that with the money I have put into this guitar I could?ve bought something of better quality, but this is an axe that now is very unique both aesthetically and sonically: and it actually plays very nicely with perfect action and itonation. In addition to the Sheraton I play a 2001 American Series Telecaster stock.
I use a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 4x10 tube amp. This a great amp for the money. Note: This is a very loud amp and weighs much more than Fender claims. I play my guitars through: DOD 270 A/B box > Boss TU-2 Tuner > 80s ProCo Rat > Visual Sound Route 66 Overdrive/Compressor. Note: I don?t always have the Rat in the line-up. I do not use the amp?s own overdrive channel as does not have a sound I am very fond of: its bland.
Playing clean these pickups are beautiful. The neck is ballsy but not muddy. It seems to be perfectly ?rounded?. We all know how neck pickups can have flat, uninteresting tones. This pickup is well balanced and, to me, is perfect for playing clean blues especially when playing fingerstyle. The bridge pickup when clean can actually provide some really cool twang.
When playing the guitar through the Route 66 I can find some great tones. I can?t say that the tones are like any one guitar player or guitar/pedal/amp configurations but to me provide somewhat familiar and at the same time unique tones. The neck pickup can range from great mellow rhythm to the dirty bass that sounds like a train rumbling on the tracks. The bridge pickup is, however, my favorite. It sounds amazing! My picking technique comes through great. It has a great dirty sound that is just pleasing as hell to the ears.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play rhythm (and pick up a few lead parts and fills) in a three guitar, bass, drums original rock band. With trepidation about using these words, I will attempt to describe our sound. We are heavily influenced by what I consider REAL country music, not the Nashville pop stuff on the radio these days, rockabilly, punk, and so many other sources. The pickups in my guitar help make a great three guitar sound among the Telecaster and Stratocaster(s) in the band. Half the time I use only the bridge pickup. The majority of the remainder of the time I have the p/u selector in the middle with the neck volume on about 6 and the bridge volume at 10. As I said, I?m very happy with the sound I get from my setup and it works beautifully in our band. If you need a good rock n roll pickup, consider the Pearly Gates. They are a great set of pickups for blues, country, and rock. Obviously it is not a metal pickup, but is probably well suited for jazz.

Comments: I don't anticipate having any problems with these pickups, but I suppose if need be I would replace them. I bought these pickups on a recommendation from a guitar tech because I didn't really know what I wanted, just something to replace the shoddy stock Epiphone pickups. I am very pleased with the sound I have achieved.

Perceived output level: Slighty hotter than the 59's but nowhere near as hot as the Bastards. I think these would be considered medium output depending on how they are wired. They drive a tube amp just about perfect IMO.
Tone: They have a deep bottom-end, somewhat scooped mids & a sharp top-end. It seems to me that they are close to what a vintage (low output) type single coil would produce as far as treble goes. No problem as long as you know how to use your tone / volume controls & EQ the amp properly.
Sonic evaluation: I use this guitar & a Strat through a Super Reverb reissue. Minimal effects, just wah & sometimes a compressor & overdrive. I finally figured out that to get good tone you really only need a good guitar, a good tube amp and a bit of talent ;)
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Good match for what I play. Probably good for many other styles, too.

Comments: I have these pups both wired in parallel & also have the volumes wired individual of each other for more versatility. The bridge pup is a bit week this way but I mainly stay in the neck & neck / bridge positions anyhow. They have a great "open" sound similar to a single coil but with the bottom-end of a humbucker. A very good tone & character to my ear. This is the sound I've been looking for all along for this guitar. I've actually had these pups for years tucked away because they were in a cheap H-S-H project guitar I had & really didn't sound very good in that so I threw 'em in the closet with the rest of the junk & forgot about them until now. Glad I stumbled across them again & I think these will be in my Les Paul for a long time.

Perceived output level: PAFish... According to my frequency analyser, 2 or 3 db louder than my SH1 neck.
Tone: A little trebly and rough.
Sonic evaluation: Rears up, reacts to the attack, bites when you beat it.. Without cover, it sounds a little harsh (but not glassy as the SH4); with a nickel cover or a 100 pf capacitance, its tone is better. Its height must be adjusted very precisely, as with every good pup... Same frequency response than with a SH 1 BUT there is more highs between 10 and 15 khz and less after... Square tonal curve, where the response of the SH1 is round...
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Good match for all styles if you know how to tweak your amp, effects and controls... For example, I'm using a "no load" pot as a general tone control, with a capacitor of 2n2 which reacts like a mid-boost . So, I can play what I want, through my Boss GT6...

Comments: I'm happy now but I was at first a little surprised because this pup doesn't really sound as an alnico 2 model (which has in theory a "spongier" and "warmer" tone than alnico 5: see what says SDuncan himself on his website).With the SHPG1, the tone is brighter and tighter than expected, maybe because the end of its screws is chamfered ( less steel and weight seems to give a brighter sound: see the "blade" polepieces of some wellknown models). In fact, I'd say that this pup has a strong character and that it needs some care/time to do what you want. It's not easy to ride a stallion! To conclude, thanks to the Seymour Duncan customer service, especially to P Gill who gave me a precious advice, by answering to my own email: you can be a little anonymous french guitarist (stranger in the night,lalalalalaa) and nevertheless exist for a great brand like Seymour Duncan ...

Sonic evaluation: I'm using a number of boutique effects and a Boogie Mark 1 amp. I did a lot of research before chosing this pickup; I'm a huge fan of Billy Gibbons and even though my guitar is relatively small and light, the Pearly Gates is a good match and is exactly what I was looking for: A mid-output PAF-style pickup with a balanced, slightly bright tone.
I've got the PG at the neck and a Duckbucker in the middle. I left the old EMG single-coil in the neck just to keep out dust--it's not connected. I'm using a five-way switch:
1. Neck humbucking
2. Neck split
3. Neck humbucking and middle
4. Neck split and middle
5. Middle
The PG has a great single-coil sound, like a slightly less edgy stock texas strat tone. It blends very well with the duckbucker.
With the PG alone in humbucking mode, the sound is great for classic rock or hard rock. It's not hot enough for modern metal sounds but it stands up great to a heavy distortion pedal. Harmonics really jump out.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play in a modern rock band and I'm going for a classic rock sound. This is the perfect PU for me.

Comments: If this pickup were destroyed or stolen, I'd get another one of the same thing.
I've been playing for 22 years and have owned and played scores of guitars, amps, and effects.
What I like: Solid, versatile sounds, split and un-split. Clear and balanced, bright but not brittle.
Dislikes: None. Like I said, this was a carefully-considered decision.
I compared this pickup to DiMarzio and Bill Lawrence and chose this one because it gave me the tone I wanted.
I'm satisfied with this pickup. It's the sound I've been looking for.
In chosing pickups, many things must be taken into account: Guitar's mass, wood, bridge type, scale, playing style, effects, amp, etc. A pickup that sounds great on one guitar might sound like ass on another. For my uses, this pickup is as close to perfect as I can get.
The folks at Black Rose Customs were great. They responded to my e-mails politely and professionally. One item on my order was not in stock (no place I called had it either), and they shipped my order free to make up for the delay.

Sonic evaluation: I play Gibson Les-Pauls with a fairly high action with 11 gauge strings though a Marshall 2100 SL-X. The only effect I use is a crybaby wah. I was really disapointed with the gibby pups. Though they are good pups, they weren't for me. I was after that classic overdrine LP tone, thick, warm, singing, round and creamy - similar to Warren Haynes tone. I read Warren used these so thought I should check them out. However, I was worried that some reviewers felt the bridge pup to be to harsh or trebly. Anyway, decided to go for it and ordered a pair with nickle covers. Got them fitted.... and.... LOVED THEM! My set have nickle covers and this may cut some of the top end, but what I get is exactly what i wanted - creamy, thick, singing LP tones. My tone is now somewhere between Warren's tone on the new Allman Brothers DVD and his early Gov't Mule sounds - just what i wanted! I don't get any of the thin, harsh treble that some users have complained from. Perhaps they just suit my rig?

Perceived output level: Patent Applied for Texas Sizzle...this pickup has a lot of grind to it's sound...it's not high out put...but it certainly packs a meaty gritty wallop in the neck. Can easily do dark death/heavy metal w/a distortion pedal and the right settings. Very versatile pickup...great for straight Jazz/Blues as well.
Tone: Very Bassy/Middy...but still retains that mid/treble sizzle. It's not really a distortion by any means but more of a dirty fuzz effect that this pickup imparts tonally.
Sonic evaluation: Kramer into 1978 Marshall JMP 2103 Combo-50w 2x12 Celestion Greenback equipped...only pedal I use is a Boss Metal Zone...as it covers every gammit of driven distortion that you could ever need.
I really...REALLY...like this pickup in the neck. It matches up pretty well w/the Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge...once I balanced out the heights of each pickup so that they're elevated/lowered to the "sweet spot" and pretty much balanced in output when I switch between the two. I have it coil tapped...but it still doesn't really sound anything like a true single coil. Nice cool neck sound when tapped.

Comments: Highly Recommend this pickup as an outstanding neck position addition to your guitar. No regrets. Love the sound I get w/it...Vintage Classic Blues Rock in the neck...grit, grind, sizzle...call it what you will...but this pickup just kicks ass for any style...except classic single coil stuff...and you can accomplish a nice single coil sound w/it tapped and blended w/the Duncan Custom Tapped as well in the middle position on the 3 Way Toggle.

Comments: With my set-up, this p/u is amazing. Very dynamic. I have no tone control on my guitar, so with the guitar volume on ten, I can get bright, screaming harmonics. Turn down the volume and the sound gets warmer and cleaner.
For me, this is a wonderful p/u. - It does everything I ask of it.
The top end is bright and the bottom is warm and detailed - not muddy. But keep in mind that the character of a p/u can depend on your amp, the settings, the speakers, your guitar and the way you play.
Get yourself a good amp, a good guitar, some decent speakers, heavy strings, guitar lessons and this p/u won't do you wrong.

Perceived output level: Sounds like a hot rodded Duncan 59, its louder and more aggressive.
Tone: Good balance between bass/mids/treble-more muddy than a 59.
Sonic evaluation: Using it in the neck position of a Heritage H-150CM (basically a Les Paul, only better). Using Fender tube amps w/Visual Sound Ultimate OD pedal and EH Small Clone Chorus pedal. Also have a Heritage H-150CM with Duncan 59's in it. This pickup sounds very full, with a nice balance of bass, mid, and treble. Compared to the 59's, which are my favorite pickups, it sounds louder and darker. It definitely has more gain, and has more of a "rude" sound. If you look at the tone chart on Duncans website, you would think that this pickup would sound very close to a 59, but it does not. They are night and day. The Pearly Gates is very full and warm distorted, and has a lot of sustain. I can get some very nice sounds by rolling the volume off a tad. This pickup is a little muddy sounding compared to my 59's, but still sounds great on its own. It does what I wanted it to do: give me nice fat neck humbucking tones without being a wall of mush. As mentioned earlier, it sounds like a hot rodded 59 or PAF style humbucker. Sounds good clean, or distorted. I can still get enough clarity in my notes to satisfy me, although the 59's are much clearer/brighter.

Comments: If I had to order my guitar again, I would still have this pickup installed. I wanted a neck humbucker that was hotter than my 59's. I also wanted the pickup to retain some clarity, and not be muddy. For me, the Pearly Gates is the right fit. It sounds much better than the stock pickups in my friends Gibsons, and suits my style well. I have had Dimarzio pickups in the past, and like Seymour Duncans better. The pickup balances well with my JB in the bridge, the two work well together. I like the pickup, and if I could change anything, I might give it just a tad more treble. Other than that, I think it is a great value.

Perceived output level: Pearly gates not an ultra hot pick up is has more treble than a PAF sounding pick up. Pearl gates have good harmonic tone and when the treble is to much I roll off my tone. You really need a Tone Controll with these pick ups to get a number of tones other wise can be to harsh some times but over all a killer pu for my gtr rig and the Tones I love.
Tone: The Pearly Gates are not a Muddy or Bassy pick up It does have bite/Treble blance is cool.
Sonic evaluation: I use The SD Pearl gates in my PRS McCarty I have changed the Bridge to a tone Pro tune-O Matic rap around Bridge this bridge,killer! in tone to the stock PRS Bridge highly recomend this mod. I use a stereo Rig Wet/Dry/Wet think EV,Steve Lukather,Micheal Landau. My rig is as such: Rivera 100W Custom Rake head tone are dumble and marshall mix very cool. This is my Dry set up using a Marshall 4X12 Loaded with (2) weber 60 watt Chicago speakers and (2) 60 watt Thame speakers.

Comments: I would buy the SD Pearly gates again I have been playing since I was 12yr old now 39. What I love about these pickups are that they cut through a trio or a full 5 pice or more group very cool pick ups. I have tried other product Fralin,Anderson,Tom Holmes,John Suhr Humbuckers,other Duncan's just to name a few thes are killer pickup for my style. Through a rig like mine you need a pickup that will cut through and keep the high's alive the Pearly Gates do this very well and I have seen Billy Gibbons rigs that are close to my set up and his Les Pauls are hollow has his tech scoop out the wood in the body all use thes on his reissue Les Paul. The search is over ver cool Pick ups.

Tone: Balanced, with enough treble and mids - not as much bass or low mid umph as the C5
Sonic evaluation: This is a great pickup. I've been blown away by my last two Duncan purchases. This and a Broadcaster tele lead that happened to be overwound to about 8K.
Anyway, this pickup is great. I don't dig Alnico II magnets, never have, never will. Except for this one. I've tried the C5, '59, Alnico II Pro, and others I can't remember. This is my favorite in the strat. I've found Alnico II mags to mush out on the clarity and low end when driven, but this pickup doesn't. It's snappy and articulate, chimey. Yes it has some high end presence, but it's sweet, yet nasty. The mids and highs are balanced and have character. I love it. It responds well to tone knob adjustments throughout the spectrum. I use it with 500K pots in the strat. Matches pretty well with single coils as far as output. I don't know how it would work in a LP or a 335, etc. I don't think I'd ever try the neck version, no way I'm putting anything but an Alnico 5 in the neck (can you say mush?)

Comments: At least for now, I'm satisfied. I'm now in a chime phase and this pickup works great for chime but has bite and a woody timbre when you really dig in. The last guy said it was like a tele and a PAF got together, and that's an apt description. It doesn't compress as much as other hb'ers, or maybe the compression is just more useful and suits the tonal spectrum of this pickup. It responds better than most humbuckers I've tried for dynamic playing. Better than Duncans I've tried, more like a PAF replica (i.e. Peter Florence voodoos which are chimey and respond very well to picking nuances). Pretty versatile, fairly classic tone.

Perceived output level: In the range of a vintage PAF as far as output, maybe a tad hotter. Medium output.
Tone: It's like a cross between a PAF and a good tele bridge pickup - a humbucker that never gets muddy. Has a high end that rivals a Gretsch Filtertron, but with more mids. Fantastic pickup for texas blues-country-rock . If you're not into the tele sound at all, you probably won't like this pickup. I wanted the result of a Les Paul and a Tele who got drunk at a party and did the nasty. The alnico 2 magnets take the harshness out of the high end. You get a nice compression similar to a vintage PAF.
Sonic evaluation: I play through a ho-made '59 Bassman circuit and jump it into a ho-made 5E3 tweed deluxe. I use 12 inch speakers, so they smooth out the highs even more. I plug my guitar into a Reverend Drivetrain and an Ibanex Analog Delay, then into a Fender outboard reverb, then into the amps. Sounds very fat but sparkly.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: This is a vintage humbucker with bite - a perfect pickup for Texas blues-rock and alt-country. I use TV Jones Filtertrons in a Guild Starfire as my main rockabilly axe. I use this one for loud Texas stuff and alt-country (Joe Ely, Wilco, etc.). This pickup gets a great "redneck humbucker" tone. If your into a dark-sounding, non-Fender, "woman tone" or metal, I'd steer clear of this one. Great for those who like some bite from their vintage humbuckers.

Perceived output level: Normal, not high output, it works well with the texas specials, no real drop off when switching.
Tone: I find it is very balanced, was trebly, but after a little adjustment of the low end screws, it came out very balanced
Sonic evaluation: Playing through the strat, it sounds great, it's wired so that the neck and mid pick up use the first tone control, while the bridge has the 2nd. I normally play through either a Fender Hotrod Deville 2x12 or a Peavey Classic 20. And through either it sounds great, it has a beautifully clear tone clean, and it holds through very well distorted. For heavy stuff I run it through a Boss super Dist or Metal Zone, and it holds the distortion well, and can crank out some great leads, while also being able to maintain some crunch..
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: It works great for blues and rock, and I haven't had a problem with it for punk and some metal type things.

Comments: I would definatley buy another, I'm actually thinking of getting one for my Les Paul Custom. I've been playing for 7 years and I just love the way this pick up sounds, compared to some of the Ibanez and Dimarzio P/u's on some of the other guitars I tried that day, This one was the better, it was a little trebly at first, but after I took it home and adjusted the height of the screws, it sounded great.

Sonic evaluation: Fender Blues Jr Amp. I have neck and bridge pickup wired to individually switch coils from series to parallel. I also use WAH, tube screamer, digital delay, flanger, and Peavey "Dirty Dog" from time to time. When playing clean, these pickups sound quite good with the coils in parallel. Very articulate with plenty of harmonics and chime. IMHO this pickup wired in parallel is the very best sounding neck pickup I've heard in a Les Paul. In series, you get a good PAF tone with good harmonics and little extra top end. These pickups have a very long, smooth breakup region, which makes them ideal for blues, but great for most styles of rock and new country. Using only tone controls, I've been able to get convincing tones of Tony Iommi (early days), AC/DC, Page, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jeff Beck (Les Paul Custom days), John Mclaughlin, etc. It's also easy to get real close to a vintage P-90 sound. If you're into metal, you might want something different. On a Les Paul your tone control will probably be more useful than ever before, mine were stuck on 10 for years!!!

Comments: I can't see having a Les Paul without these pickups, so I would definately replace them. I also use a PRS Custom 24, Cavin TL-50, Peavey Firenza, and a "Frankencaster" with a Warmoth Swamp Ash body, early Fender Strat neck, and Peavey pickups. I've been playing about 20 years. All my guitars except Les Paul and Frankencaster have the stock pickups. In Les Paul I've used PAF Pro, Duncan '59, Classic '57, JB, and EMG's. With the Peraly Gates, I've got the Les Paul sound I was looking for.

Comments: if it were destroyed or stolen i would probably go with a different seymour duncan model because these tend to get a little shrill when they're driven hard. but when coupled with the texas special the PG-1's take on a sweet fender "quack" that has to be heard to appreciate. when the humbuckers are linked together the tone is open & smoother than when used separately but still trebely. also, splitting the coils should be avoided because the signal gets pretty weak.

Sonic evaluation: I have a Fat Strat with the LRbaggs acoustic bridge and preamp in it. I use a Digitech GNX 1 processor and a Hot Rod Distortion through a Fender Bassman 2x15 half stack. The pickup gives off great harmonics. You can hit harmonics almost anywhere on the fret board. I am more of a neck pickup player so I use the Pearly Gates for soloing mostly and it works great. It really cuts through the mix when playing in a live situation.

Comments: If it were lost or stolen I'd probably get it agian. I might try a different humbucker though, like a Screaming Demon or a Lil' 59. I like the sound it has but use it mainly for soloing. If you are soloing at all it is a great pickup. Cuts through the mix. This is what Fender uses on the Texas Special Fat Strat and that is why I got it.

Sonic evaluation: I am using this pickup in my mahogany bodied Les Paul into a Marshall JTM 45 and also a 59 Bassman reissue. Even though both of my amps are very "bass" heavy and thick sounding, this pickup managed to kill my tone because of all the harsh treble. I thought that I could get a "better" ZZ Top tone also when in fact I got a better tone with the 59 for about $30 less.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Blues and blues-based rock. For my taste I think its trebly enough for country, maybe some guys dig a lot of treble in their blues; I can't stand it.

Comments: If it were lost or stolen, I would replace it with a Duncan 59, which is already on order because I foolishly sold my last one. The Duncan 59 is a great smooth, warm pickup that suits a variety of styles, the Pearly Gates on the other hand is "bright, loud and trebly". I didn't find that the Pearly Gates was smooth even when I backed off the tone control and turned down the Presence on the amp. Horrible value! Don't get scammed, like me!

Perceived output level: I wanted something that would kick some ass when needed, but still be able to clean up. The Pearly Gate delivers.
Tone: Good mid-tones and treble
Sonic evaluation: The stock pu's were way too muddy, and not much tone. Combining the Seymour Duncan '59 in the neck with the Pearly Gate at the bridge is a very versatile arrangement. I run my Les Paul through a Vox wah, TS-9, Fuzz-Face to a Johnson Marquis JM-60 stack. The Pearly Gate definitely has a nice punch to go along with a very sweet high-end. I play this pickup alone quite a bit. But the '59 rounds the combo out with some smooth, warm vibes, great for rhythmn and leads. Cleans up very nicely. Hit the TS-9 or Fuzz Face and things start to get sonic. I love these pups.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I think the Pearly Gate is an excellent all-around pickup. You want ZZ Top? You got it! Great for blues-leads.

Comments: I'd definitely buy this pickup again. When I bought it, I also bought the '59 at the same time at a guitar-shop that specialized in selling parts as well as alot of Les Pauls. There were two guys running the store that day; and when I explained what kind of sound I was looking for one guy (the owner) was all for going Gibson PAF's all the way. Can't remember exactly how much but it was well over $125 per pu. The other gentleman suggested Seymour Duncans, which was his personal favorite, plus having a much nicer impact on the wallet. Both pu's ran me about $150. I wouldn't mind hearing what my Les Paul would sound like with TWO Pearly Gates!

I thought this pickup was WAY too bright and unbalanced, if you like lots of treble and loudly this might be for you. It would be good in a all mahagony body guitar or a guitar with a mellow or smooth sound to brighten it up

Comments: If your looking for a real PAF sound that is smooth and tonefull buy a Fralin his pickups smoke this baby. A regular duncan 59 is smoother also, I don't hate this pickup it has it's place, for people that like it Bright. I think if they would smooth this pick up out it would be a lot better, plenty of gain just too harsh for maple topped guitars.

Comments: Seymour Duncan makes a good PU. However their customer service sucks !!! I ordered a Custom PU two months ago and they have sent me the wrong PU twice !!!
I recommend buying their PU's if they are on stock at your local Dealer. Otherwise get ready to wait...return wrong PU....wait some more and receive wrong PU again !!!

Comments: I have been playing over 25 years,owned several guitars by the major manufacturers and in my opinion this is the typical les paul rock sound through a cranked marshall.Call me old fashioned if you like but to my ears there is nothing like a marshall "on the edge" with power tubes dancing being driven by a les paul with paf type pups.My other les paul has a SDjazz in the neck and a SDJBin the bridge,this sounds good but the pearly gates are better because the distortion sounds so much richer and full probably because the pearly gates uses an alnico2 magnet as opposed to the alnico5 in the JB and the jazz.With the marshall amp gain on 8 I can use the vol. on the guitar to get an ac/dc crunch (about no. 3)or wind it up to 10 for solos(bridge).On the neck pup I can get the Clapton "woman tone"with guitar vol. maxed and tone control rolled back, toggle switch in the mid.position and using the tubescreamer gives a santana type lead tone,Using the clean amp settings(mesa heartbreaker)these pickups yield a beautiful clear tone for rhythm/chord work,almost disguising the fact that they are humbuckers,I know they will never sound like a strat played clean but they get close enough for me.I use the marshall on 90% of our band songs anyway.I have tried quite a few different pups in both my les pauls(aph1's,59's,seth lovers,full shred,JB,jazz)but I have now stopped looking because the pearly gates is certainly the best for my style of playing.Only my opinion but you might think differently,if they were stolen or destroyed I would replace them immediately as I think these pups are the perfect match for a les paul playing classic rock and blues through a cranked tube amp.

Sonic evaluation: Played into a marshal 900 combo. I first put this pickup into a mild sounding semi-hollow body LP style Ibanez performer. I thought it would spice up the guitar but it was the wrong combo. The guitars tone was too sweet and mellow and the pickup sounded muddy and clanky. I then put it in the bridge position of the Charvel with a new pickguard. The Charvel had a very bright hard wood body and the Pearly Gates did better there. The sound is trebly with a tight growling bass end. The only problem is that the highs are very loud and the bass end is a bit muddy at higher gain. With lower gain amps the pickups character comes through well. I think it is better suited to a rhythm style of playing than lead. I like its attack but that's about all it has. Not much for sustain.

Perceived output level: It is supposed to be a medium output pickup, and it might be, but it sound LOUD. It drive my amp into a nice fat overdrive at lover gainsettings than other guitars/pickups I use.
Tone: It might be a bit muddy, lacking a bit clarity on the bass side, but the high: oh boy!! Its proununced without beein harsh and very sweet.
Sonic evaluation: I use a Measa Boogie Studio preamp, modified to have three chanels, a Marshal Valvestate poweramp, a digitech GSP21 for reverb, flanging etc and the occasional stompbox for fuzz-tones. This guitar is for bluesy licks and riffing and this pickup is exactly what i was loocking for. In my oppinion it have a lot of punch and a rich tone. It isn't a high output pickup, but it does something with my ampsetup that make it sound like a high output pickup. I didn't know that it vas mid-output wen buying it, and I was realy surprised to se it marked like that on Seymore Duncans Website.

Comments: I have had the opportunity to compare it to a guitar with the JB model, and the pearly gates is mych warmer and midrangey. It will not drive the amp to distort like JB, but it is much more dynamic and in my ears muck more musical. I still have the stock pickup in the neck position, but I am planning on replacing it with the neckversion of the pealy gates. I realy recommend this pickup to anyone locking for that sweet hot texas Les Paul bluesy sound. Hey! It was made for Billy Gibbons in ZZ Top!!!

Sonic evaluation: I use a few very different amps, I've tried to make the evaluation focus
Comparing to a typical PAF, it's just a dash hotter. It seems to have less of the thickness in the low mids. The lows are well defined. The upper mids are more pronounced, making it kick a bit more as the literature says, making it a little 'ruder', the highs are the defining factor of this pickup; I've tried it in an LP Custom and an ash bodied strat (with a lively top end punch).
It seemed in the LP to add a clanginess to the notes, the bass strings were well defined - good for crunchy rhythm , but up the neck the notes lost depth and the treble response was too brittle. Use of the tone control reduced the sting, but what is left is a slightly brash mid range with a muddy top. All in all, it worked against what most people would say were the desirable qualities of that archetypal LP sound.
In the Strat, the tone was, in a way, more acceptable. Because what one expects from a stock strat, the lack of lower mids seem to fit in with the theme. The unit did fare quite well at some cleaner tones compared to other 'humbuckers in strats' I've tried, but you have to tease the amp. Again for me, the clang was too much.
Notably, most people retro fitting HB's into strats, are generally after a pickup that will take their bridge sound more markedly away from the typical strats tonality and dynamic response.
Personaly, for strats, I think the ground covered by this unit is performed better by one of the hotter Kinman AVn's, which have the well defined upper mids, a BIG sound, but, have a pleasing top end response - and have a kick to them.
So, if you're replacing a unit in a HB style guitar for higher gain applications, the PG needs a perfectly tailored amp/guitar setup in which to work.

Sonic evaluation: I'm using a Y2K Gibson LP Classic. I did however, have the shitty ABR-1 bridge changed to a Gibson Nashville. The amp is a 60s Fender Silver Faced Super Reverb. I use pedals very sparingly.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: For the Peter Green, old Beck, Clapton, Page (and the like) stuff I do, this is what the Pearly Gates was made for! I use a bridge model in the neck and the bridge. There is really no style that these pickups can't handle though.

Comments: If I somehow parted company with the PGs, I'd replace them immediately. These are the only pickups I really trust. I've found them to be the closest sounding to real PAFs. I've been playing for 30 something years. What I listed above as gear is all I have (or need). I compared the PGs to anything and everything out there - Duncans, DiMarzios, Gibsons, Fralins, Lawrences, etc, etc. The PGs are simply the best! I love everything about them except the price. They are so friggin' expensive that no matter how much I wanted them, I would not pay the $85.00 each average price tag. I scouted until I was able to get them through trading. I'm totally satisfied with the Pearly Gates and I truly feel that these are THAT sound. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who wants a real vintage sounding Gibson with a little extra zing.

Perceived output level: Well, in my setup, it's pretty hot, but it's no JB or Dimarzio Evolution, so middle of the line.
Tone: Probably trebly, in my bass heavy setup, it's middy. :)
Sonic evaluation: Guitar goes into a Rocktron Piranha, which I usually compare to a Mesa Boogie Triaxis, except I paid $250 for this, and sold my Triaxis for $900. :) Then to a 31 band EQ, a Lexicon MPX-500 for some reverb, a BBE 462 Sonic Maximizer (it does add some color) to a POD Pro, Rectifier setting. This is probably the most flexible rig you'd ever need. I can do anything from clean to death metal. (Is there anything that is more extreme than those?) Also, I've found that pickups add a LOT to your sound. Call me crazy, but I've had a couple of USA BC Rich's, and I'd take this guitar over them, just because of the sound I can get. I will admit, this is an older Platinum, with the Floyd Rose patent trem, not the chrome springy-job one. It's my favorite trem in the world, if anyone wants to get rid of their BC Rich platinum with this trem, email me. I'd especially like a Black Platinum Ironbird with black hardware. :)
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play a mixture of black and death metal for the most part, but occasionally hit upon hardcore/speed mix (ala S.O.D.) Most people use this pickup for rock, but under the right conditions, you can play anything with any pickup just about. I'm still surprised about this being a perfect match for black metal though. :)

Comments: Personally, I have 15 guitars. Most of them are BC Rich's, but I do have 2 Scott Ian Jackson's. I use all sorts of different pickups.. Dimarzio Evolution, Super Distortion, Tone Zone, Air Zone.. Duncan JB, Jazz, Distortion, Full Shred... EMG 81, 85, 89. This one is definitely a keeper, it's the best pickup that I've found for black metal! It NAILS the speed-tremelo picking part of Dimmu Borgir's Mourning Palace!!

Sonic evaluation: My set-up consists of my ES-335, (which happens to be one of the best guitars ever made, except for a Les Paul, or my friends 62' strat) through a DOD overdrive pedal, into a cry baby wah wah, into a chorus pedal, into a Boss hyper-metal distortion pedal, through a snarlin dogs runnin rampid on rabies wah wah, into a digital effects proccesor, through a Boss compressor, into my Crate amp. I can honestly say that with this set up, I am very UNHAPPY with the sound of these pick ups! They sound Dull. Not dull like silverware that has not been polished in a while, but dull like the oxidized finish on the Statue of Liberty. My Seth Lovers had more clarity and "honk". Not just a regular "honk", more like the honk of a 69 Chevrolet Impala. My friend always insists that the honk is more like a 73 VW Beetle, but he is wrong. I went with the Pearly Gates because I really wanted a little more "Texas Sizzle". I found that with the "Texas Sizzle", I also got a little bit of Mexican flavoring as well. Probably because they are so close to each other on the map. I am not saying anything bad about these pick-ups or Seymour Duncan, I just think that with my set up they do not sound that great.

Comments: If they were stolen I would try something different. I guess I did not really want "Texas sizzle" but perhaps more of a "Nebraska sizzle". I am currently searching for a pick-up that offers this. I do not think I wil have a problem finding them. I have been playing for about 3 years now and really enjoy it. Like I said before, I compared them to my Seth Lovers, which happen to be the best pickups ever, exept for the Rio Grande Texas BBQ's. Now those things cook!! Talk about sizzle. Not sizzle like when I dump the fries in the deep frier at work, but sizzle like when the cook dumps three pounds of morning bacon on the hot grill. Look out! So.....I guess I am still searhing for "that sound" and until I find it, wish me luck.

Perceived output level: Fairly hot, much hotter than the crappy stock pickups on my old Epiphone guitar.
Tone: I guess it's fairly balanced. Maybe a little trebly, but adjusting the EQ on the amp accordingly solves this minor problem.
Sonic evaluation: I'm playing a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe through a Mesa Boogie Mark III 100 watt head going into a Mesa Boogie Halfback 4x12 cabinet with Celestion speakers...no effects. Sounds incredible with this combination. Perfect balance of tone when the EQ is properly set.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: For heavier, distorted sounds, this pickup sounds wonderful. People have been saying that it is way too trebly for metal and similar styles, so maybe it is just my amp, but I think this pickup is very suitable for metal, punk, etc....even clean stuff, and i highly recommend it.

Comments: Overall, I think Seymour Duncan makes the best pickups out there, and this is certainly no exception. If it were destroyed, I would almost definitely buy another one, or perhaps I would try a Distortion pickup instead. I love everything about it, and I don't have to have my amp cranked on stage anymore. I'm very satisfied with this pickup overall. Like I said before, it may be inclined to be a bit trebly, but adjusting your amp's EQ should solve that. I think I finally have the sound I've wanted for so long.

Perceived output level: This particular Pearly Gates is a bridge model. It is about the same output as the 490R. I wanted it there to balance with the bridge's Duncan Custom which is almost twice as powerful.
Tone: Wow, not only is it a fantastic balance across the tonal spectrum, but this puppy screams! The sustain is unbelievable!!
Sonic evaluation: My LP Studio has the dot rosewood board and also is apparently one of the last Studios which has the full size and thickness LP Standard type body. I plug it into a late 60s 50 watt Marshall with 8 10s. No boxes, pedals, gimmicks, etc.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: As stated above, I guess you could further categorize it as "Dinosaur Rock". I think this pickup is great for all styles of music except Heavy Metal and Goth type stuff. It has too much high end and not overwhelming bass. Besides, it is a medium output pickup.

Comments: If it were 'compromised', I'd get another one without hesitation. I've been playing 33 years. I own 2 other Gibsons: LP Classic and '61 SG Reissue. What I love about this pickup is the range of styles you can play with it and the sustain - Unbelievable! Even when you raise and lower the volume and tone controls, it remains full bodied and dynamic. Harmonics are outstanding too. What I hate about it is that it is quite pricey. I guess Billy Gibbons has to get his cut. After all, Seymour copied this pickup from Billy's Les Paul. I've compared this pickup to all the major "PAFesque" leading pickups out there. I honestly believe that this pickup wipes the floor with them. This is absolutely, positively, without a shadow of a doubt, the ultimate neck pickup for me. As far as a bridge pickup, I tried it. It wasn't powerful or ballsy enough for me. It also was a tad too trebly. So, as far as the ultimate bridge pickup goes, I'm still experimenting.

Tone: The tone is nice and trebly just like a good bridge pickup should be.It can also get pretty middy-fied with the right adjustment to the EQ. It sounds great with the PRS 5 position Rotary switch. 4 different settings for it and it blasts out some of da sweet stuff
Sonic evaluation: I use a PRS CE24 through a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal, a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah, and very very rarely, a DOD rackmount EQ. Then it all goes into a 74 Fender Twin Reverb

And its agreed with almost any type of rock(Classic, Old Punk,Metal types,etc) but I'm not too sure about Blues Rock. I never did like using bridge pickups for any type of blues. The only bridge pickup that comes close to being good with blues,in my opinion,is a Strat single coil.

Comments: If it were stolen or damaged I would probably buy the origional PRS HFS pickup since I've never used one and if that wasn't better than the Gate then its into the guitar parts box with it and I'd run out to purchase the Gate. Sonic evaluation: Played through Kendrick 2410 and Gusher. The 57 Classic's did not sound bad, but they sounded so dark and bassy in my particular guitar, I simply had to make a change. The Pearly Gates almost went to the opposite extreme. Quite bright and trebly, but not in a bad way. Before the change, the tone controls stayed all the way up. Now, I can use the tone knobs like the should be used. To put it simply, these may be the perfect pickups for a 335 style guitar.

Perceived output level: its hotter than your normal humbucker but real sweat. It sustains like crazy.What I like about it is that I can shred on it or have a real sweat clean tone. I play a Gibson explorer with the pearly gate in the neck and a duncan dist. in the bridge, and a preamp boost on the neck volume switch. My setup--explorer--dod wahwah pedal--big muff--zoom 505 only for the crunchy dist-- Marshall JCM 900 50watts-- and in the effects loop-- rockman graphic 12 band eq-- boss ps-3 for wicked sounds

Sonic evaluation: I use my fantastic custom semi-hollow (it's a one-off, a one of a kind!)through a SansAmp Tri-O.D. and a Boss chorus pedal. As for amps, I play through whatever amp the club provides. As I play around four to six nights a week in a different venue each night, I get to play thorugh everything from Fender Twin Reissues to Marshall half-stacks to Mesa Boogie combos to crappy old Peaveys (I do like their chorus amps, though). My guitar sounds killer through just about anything.
I was at first quite taken aback by the treble response of these pick-ups. Then I became downright dismayed. Being a jazzbo at heart, lots of treble ain't exactly my cup of tea. Then I tried lowering the pick-ups --- my neck pick-up is flush with the mounting ring and my bridge pick-up is just slightly higher, just enough to balance the neck pick-up's output --- and now I LOVE !!!! the sound I've been getting. BTW, I also set my amp's treble and presence control way down, so that might also have quite a bit to do with my tone. I crank the midrange knob. Doing so gives me all the high end I need. (Most guitar amplifiers have their midrange calibrated around the 1-2K area anyway) That's a little trick I copped off of a Jerry Donahue interview I read a couple of months ago. Lower the treble, crank the midrange. It gives you a full, present, fat sound that really cuts through without being shrill or overbearing. My amp setting usually goes something like this (varies depending on the amp): Treble -- 2-4; Mid -- 6-8; Bass -- 4-5.
With these settings and my pickup adjustment, I get great tone from both the full humbucker and coil-tapped modes. Neck pick-up humbucker sounds great for jazz and old-style blues --- full, fat, lots of harmonic detail. Great blossom of notes. Neck pick-up coil-tapped is great for full-sounding rhythm parts with lots of skanking and Mayfield-Hendrix-isms. Both pick-ups coil-tapped is also great for rhythm playing --- I use it to cop Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince and Kool and The Gang rhythm parts. Bridge humbucker is great for high-gain soloing --- fat, full and enough high-end punch to scream and cut through. One major advantage to the inherently bright nature of these pick-ups is the great detail they give to the notes I play. I sometimes play at speeds of up to 16th notes at 220 beats per minute, and these pick-ups play back each and every note without mushing out. They-re also great for legato playing, again coz they reproduce so much of what comes out of your fingers.

Comments: If it were destroyed, I'd be pissed (I paid roughly a 100 bucks for it!) However, I would not buy another one. For the music I play it just isn't the right pickup. I have found that the Dimarzio Steve's Special is an excellent bridge pick up, and it is not in all of my guitars. It has beautiful string definition- wich is very important to me. I like to hear each note in a chord, even at high gain settings. If you like to play classic rock or blues, then this is your pickup.

Really loud but smooth, so it cuts through nicely. I had a coil tap installed in this too for the added versatility and it sounds good, especially clean.

Comments: Again, the mix of the SD Peraly Gates in the bridge and SD Hot Rails in the neck, give this guitar a fatter, beefier tone that it didn't have with the stock pickups. Their ouputs seem the same to me, so I can get good rythm and lead sounds at the flick of a switch. I don't know how this combination would work on other guitars, but for this one it sounds great. Originally, when I bought my strat, this guitar started gathering dust. But since I replaced the pickups, I use it just as much now. I'm still searching for the ultimate sound, but that's like searching for the holy grail. Right now I'm totally satisfied with the pickup. When my tastes in tone changes, then I'm sure I'll eventually replace it.

Perceived output level: Noticeably higher output than stock Carvin PU's, with a lot of bite. Can really scream with the right amp.
Tone: Excellent for high gain leads, but not without sacrificing some of your cleaner tones. Lots of bottom end AND searing highs, plus just enough midrange to keep a balanced sound with added punch!.
Sonic evaluation: I currently use the Carvin through a MesaBoogie Rect-o-verb and get very satisfying results for high gain lead playing. Muted playing can achieve a great "chunky" sound. When holding a note, the sustain shimmers and harmonics sing on cue (although I have to give a lot of credit to the amp for this too) When used in conjunction with the SD '59 Model neck PU, I also get chord dynamics that astound me at times. I have coil taps on this guitar, and sometimes I swear I'm playing a Strat! I love full chordal bashing and these PU's really fit the bill for that.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: This PU is best for Rock, Hard Rock, Blues, Alternative and maybe Metal. High energy stuff. It may be too bright for Goth, but that may depend on the other equipment used.

Comments: I've been playing guitar for 19 years. I also have a Telecaster and an Epiphone Casino. I love the Pearly Gates for what it does for my lead playing, but I wouldn't put it on every guitar I own. I miss some of the clean warmth that the original pickups had, but since Carvin doesn't make 'em like that anymore, I'm happy with the Seymour Duncans. I will keep this guitar as my "HiPo" axe, and use my other guitars for cleaner stuff if I need it. I would definitely get another one if the necessity arises.

The pickup is great especially for soloing in the manner of Sweet Child O' mine or For the Love of God or Gary Moore stuff meaning, bassy sound, very warm, well defined, precise.Split it is the best clean sound I ever heard on a guitar, perfect to play blues ! Sounds better than a strat in my opinion. Very plain sound with alot of harmonics comming through. Great, period.

Comments: Best pickup I can imagine on a neck position on any guitar. Sounds perefct for all teh above mentioned reasons. Doesn't sound that good split and distorted, but does anyone use that anyway ? Sonic evaluation: Well, okay, I have it at the bridge at an angle (Like the bridge single-coil on all Stratocasters), which looks cool and supposedly adds bass and treble. I also had a push/pull pot put on to split it into a single, which is cool. I like running it with a neck/bridge mix, neck tone at about 4 and the humbucker split... There it as a nice mellow mix between bass and treble. It's a good pickup, and can do nice warm tones for blues, all the way to high bass high treble Fear Factory type crunch.

Tone: Bright!! Thin, brittle, crisp. Hurts ears.
Sonic evaluation: Boogies and Marshalls. It was shrill sounding and required a lot of EQ modifications. These made my other guitars sound dull. I took it out and put it in a Paul Reed Smith custom 24 10 top. Then it really sounded good. Apparently not good for neck through maple necks unless you really like that "Texas" sparkle and twang. Good for really fast swirly playing not good for slow sweet playing with out EQing drastically.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: It's good for getting that Billy Gibbons sound. Doesn't fit with my style.

Comments: I was not satified at all with this pickup in my Jackson. My friend took his Bridge model and stuck it in the neck position of his Les Paul and it was excellent sounding. My other friend loves it in his Paul Reed Smith but doesn't really like the way the Paul Reed Smith Guitars play, I agree with him because except for only one I tried out of about 50 (It was a CE 22 fret model) I really don't like the way they play either. It really works good in a muddy sounding guitar but not in a naturally bright one.

Reason for pickup change: I had a 59 in there for a while, but I sold it and put the stock pickup back in. It seemed like both were just missing something. The 498T had very little high end when played at high volume - too much midrange.

Perceived output level: a little hotter than the 498T and 59
Tone: trebly, but not in a bad way - actually, it's almost twangy sometimes. probably not as much low end as the 498T
Sonic evaluation: I tried it through my 65 Bassman and a 1987X. The alnico 2 magnets really do have a sweeter high end than the alnico 5 in the 59 and 498T. It sounds pretty good clean, but it rocks when the amp is cranked. It has just enough midrange to be punchy, but not honky. It is a four conducter, but I didn't bother with that.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: great for my style. I use the neck pickup for clean sounds, and the PG in the bridge kicks ass with a distorted amp.

Comments: I like it enough to keep it in the guitar. The neck pickup sounds decent combined with the bridge, but the neck is a little flat sounding on it's own (especially with a bright pickup like a 59 or PG in the bridge). I don't know how it would sound in the neck position, but it sounds great at the bridge. Oh, one more thing I LOVE about this pickup is the fact that it has 2 white coils! It looks great against the LP's wine red finish.

Sonic evaluation: Using a Fender Hotrod Deluxe, sounded great till i put these in. I know if it sounded good why did i change my Pickups? Well cause i was told "If you dont like your guitar with these in you just dont like your guitar" So I figured what the hey Ill give em a shot. I hated them so bad i took them out after 3 weeks. Pickup was too distorted and Brittle sounding. Put the old pickups back in, and it sound amazing again.

Perceived output level: Hot, slightly moreso than average humbuckers such as the Gibson '57 Classic, Duncan '59, Ibanez Super 58, or Dimarzio PAF Pro. More like a Gibson 498T.
Tone: Balanced but present. Pronounced high end, but not brittle. If you picture a stock old gibson humbucker through an amp with a presence pot turned way up, you're thinking along the right lines.
Sonic evaluation: I play the PRS through a Mesa/Boogie DC2, probably not the ideal amp for testing the inherent tone of a guitar or pickups given its inherent tonal coloration, but i have played the guitar through a variety of Peavey and Fender amps, so have a pretty good idea of what I'm working with.
The Pearly Gates manages to ride a fine line between aggressive crispness and vintage style richness. As one might expect, the alnico 2 magnets deliver a fairly transparent representation of the amp and guitar, but with a warm, sweet midrange and smooth but powerful highs. Rolling off the tone control doesn't muddy the tone at all, throughout the taper. I very much recommend this pickup for anyone desiring a really ballsy crunch/blues tone. I actually first heard this pickup in a low-end Jackson with a basswood body and maple neck, and it sounded very smooth and civilized! Sounds excellent split too.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: It might not have the output desired for a full-on Metal rig, but the tonal profile is definitely there. Very versatile sounds here. Bear in mind that if you have a guitar with a maple to (Les Paul, et al,) you will REALLY hear the additional brightness! Twangs nice for country or rockabilly too. I didn't care for it in the neck position, unless used with another PG in the bridge. Doesn't blend especially well with other pickups

Comments: I've been playing about ten years and have played more guitars and pickups than i care to admit. I am a definite Seymour duncan fan, and for this particular role, i would choose no other pickup. I have an epiphone dot that i have outfitted with a Jazz neck and JB bridge, which i use for jazzier or more fuzionesque roles. For anything retro, blues or country, the PRS/'59/Pearly Gates arrangement really takes the cake.

Comments: Love the pickup. It must be matched with equal pickups. The Texas Specials are not hot enough to compete. When changing pickups one has to be carfeful to watch volume. One might consider a RoadHouse style by using 2 Pearly Gates (B&N) instead of one.
It is designed for a Les Paul style guitar but works well in Strats.

Tone: Well balanced in both positions, cleans up well with volume.
Sonic evaluation: I'm using a Marshall JTM-30 1x12, the guitar, and a cord. I liked the sound of older ZZ Top stuff and wanted a good solid southern rock sound. This is it! These pickups were after all designed for Billy's '59 Les Paul, it was kinda' hard to go wrong. This is the classic PAF sound everybody hopes for, just a little hotter and maybe a little better defined.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I'm the singer/guitarist for my band doing what I call revved up southern punk rock. These pickups are nice and quiet and give me the sound I need. I found these to be suitable for just about anything(all that metal and hardcore stuff comes from the preamp anyway. Has lots of life and good harmonics. Perfect for me, you judge for yourself.

Comments: I would buy these again. This is my third set 'cause I had 'em in the last two guitars(both Les Paul's). I've been playing about eight years and use tube amps exclusively with as few effects as possible(I hate that cheesy overprocessed sound). Love the sound, wouldn't use anything else. This and my little Marshall with the el-34's just have THAT TONE!!!

Perceived output level: This was my first REAL guitar and I love Strats, so I got this one, and I fell in love with the tone that the pickup delivered.
Tone: Balanced
Sonic evaluation: I'm using the Lone Star with a Fender Super 60 tube amp, and a Peavey 412. Through the tube amp it sounds great. The sound is warm and gives a good crunch in overdrive

Sonic evaluation: Played clean, its too trebly and I have to roll the tone back to about 1-2. There, the sound/tone is useful but I wouldn't buy it again to play mostly clean..Driven by a pedal, you see the value of this pick-up; sounds great where the PAF became mushy and boomy! Through a Blues Deluxe its still plenty bright to my ear but sounds like a perfect choice through a Sovtek or Marshall set-up.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: For playing clean blues, I wouldn't recommend the Pearly Gates as I would prefer the PAF at the neck position for that. Comments: I'm not sure about what I'd try if I had it to do again, as I might try a Seth Lover or Duncan Custom also. I've been playing for over 30 years, on and off, and can think of a few dozen various amps, guitars, and pedals which I'm just desperate to own. Sonic evaluation: I was pretty disappointed in this pickup because it didn't sound a helluva lot different than the stock pickup it replaced. I was hoping for a more PAF sound but it just didn't seem to get it in my guitar. Its not that it sounded bad at all, I was just expecting more from it. It distorted real well and produced great harmonics, but in the clean channel it was a little too harsh and not smooth enough. It wasn't very sweet sounding at all either.

Sonic evaluation: I love this pickup. I've only had single coil guitars in the past. Never happy with the stock pickup in the bridge position of my American Std Strat. I tend to play in the neck position (or out of phase with neck/mid). This is great for cutting through on a rockin' tune. Sounds great when soloing to "La Grange!"

Comments: The pickup selections for the Lonestar Strat give me THE Tone I've been hoping to find. I still have my stock Am Std Strat for that clean, old Thunderbirds sound. But the combination of the Pearly Gates and the Texas Specials covers me for SRV rhythyms and Billy Gibbons, slightly-hotter-than- P.A.F. sound!

Perceived output level: I found the output to be slightly lower than a PAF.
Tone: Extremely balanced.
Sonic evaluation: The bridge pickup on its own in humbucking mode is very warm, with more
midrange than a PAF, but less trebly. In single coil mode its extremely
bright but not harsh (a Telecaster bridge pickup springs to mind). The
neck pickup on it's own in humbucking mode is very smooth without any
muddy bass or nasty overtones (possibly not as 'woody' as a PAF). In
single coil mode you lose some bass and gain some treble, making it
a useful pickup for clean warm rhythm pieces. The ultimate warm clean
sound comes from a combination of bridge in single coil and neck in
humbucking mode.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Suitable for any style as long as they are wired to allow all combinations.

Comments: This product was exactly what I was needing to make a good sounding
guitar sound great. I've had these pickups fitted to the Flame for
four years now and I've not played a guitar that is as versatile
without some compromises. I've just ordered another to relace the
bridge humbucker in a Yamaha Pacifica!
