Features :
One split coil P-Bass style pickup and one bridge position Jazz style pickup. Passive. Stan also put together a stacked volume/tone setup for each pickup a la the 1960 Jazz Bass (Fender Deluxe).

Instrument :
1979 P/J/ bass, Hawaiian koa body with a maple neck and maple fretboard. These were to replace active EMG 81s that, while sounding good, were too zingy for this bass.
I don't know which artists are using this setup other than myself.

Sound : 9
The output is right about where my U.S.A. Jazz is, volume-wise (all other settings on the amp being the same). I use the '79 with an Ampeg BA-112 and an Ampeg B-100R Rocket Bass amp. Unless you're Bootsy or Geddy, effects suck so I don't use them at all: Bass -> Monster Cable -> Amp. Very simple and pure.
As for the sound of these pickups, I was told by my drummer and by another musician in the audience that, while this bass sounded a little bit darker than my U.S.A. Jazz (also with maple neck and fretboard), it was also more articulate, less muddy, and had a great funk tone. I was surprised to hear that but have to say that it sounded good enough for me to wonder why I bought another bass to begin with.

Overall Rating : 9
If this bass was ever stolen I'd hunt the sucker down and stick his hands into a plastic shredder. Or I'd buy another P/J Fender and have Stan make up a new set of these pickups for me.

I've been playing for a while--let's leave it there. I have the amps mentioned and a cache of U.S.A. Precision and Jazz Basses, including a lined fretless P-Bass (cool). I use Monster Cables and have a Radial JDI Passive DI when needed.

I chose these pickups because Stan was communicative and knowledgeable in helping design the sound I was looking for. These definitely sound like what I specified although I would have them wound a little hotter next time--but that was my choice, to have a nice, vintage Fender sound and these definitely have it :-) I'm not looking for any pickups to replace these any time soon and the bass these are in will be getting a regular workout. One nit to pick: the corner edge of the pickup covers were a little pointy. Otherwise, no complaints.
