Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): Christian Rock, Blues, Fingerstyle
Reason for pickup change: In my guitar arsenal, replacing a PRS McCarty with SD Designed Soapbars. Pete's VVG HS-90's easily do this, and give me just a tad more clartiy @ lower volume settings.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Clean to very driven, without mud or loss of clarity !
Tone: Very balanced, responsive to treble pot and PU position !
Sonic evaluation: A Peavey 210 Delta Blues Classic outfitted with: Matched Quad of JJ Tesla EL84's, early 80's British RCA 12AX7's in the drive slots( first two ), Mullard 12AX7 in the OD/reverb slot(third slot), and Jensen P10R speakers. Nothing plain here! I use a Peavey Rage 158's for household practice ( bedroom & studio )and headphone use, good setups !
My effects consists of either a Boss ME-50, or a Guyatone ST2, and Boss RV3 running together. For the most part, I am a volume manipulator...very conscious of drive/overdrive in relation to volume/tone settings!
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Christian Praise&Worship, blues, garage band stuff, fingerstyle

Comments: Got my first Silvertone acoustic in 1966, been playing off and on ever since. I also have other acoustics:'63 Epiphone Texan, 315 & 355 Taylors, Takamine Classical, and Samick Resonator. Electrics consist of: Fender; Am Std Strat, Hardtail Strat, Telecaster with Bill Lawrence 280&290's. Gibson LP Special 490/498's, Samick Jazzmaster with P-90's, The Epi 335 with the VVG HS-90's, and several guitar projects of my own.
These pups are actually HS-90SW's. The difference is that these pups come with two sets of magnets, Alnico, and Ceramic, and the instructions to change them out. I have no need to fiddle around with the magnets, as these pups are perfect, for me, as is! Pete's P-90's are every bit as articulate as the Seymour Duncan Designed P-90's on a PRS McCarty I had briefly owned, with just a bit more brightness, clarity ! They took a muddiness out of my Epi Dot I didn't realize was there, until the swap. These pups along with new CTS 500K ohm pots, bring out the Epi's maple clarity, but will drive like anything ever dreamed by a Southern Rocker ! Definitely makes my Dot a keeper, ( such Rock&Roll drive )! By backing off the volume, the tone can be cleaned up to clear, without getting wimpy. Very versatile pup/guitar arrangement! Don't think it'd be my first choice in a jazz trio, but anything else is fair game...
I only regret doing this review before buying all the VVG pups I need, prices can only go up, perhaps to the point of being equal to value. Thanks Pete !

Features
:
Pickup features: P-90 in humbucker sized bobbin
Impedence or other specs:
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Maple Body/neck ES-335
Position: all positions
Pickup being replaced: Had none. Installed both neck and bridge
Other pickups on guitar: None
Artists using this pickup: Don't know
You musical style(s): Varied
Reason for pickup change: The guitar was givent to me without any hardware or electronics. I wanted a P-90 because of the tonal response and sensitivity to picking attack changes compared to humbuckers.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: normal
Tone: balanced to slightly elevated midrange
Sonic evaluation: using a ES-335 knockoff with maple body/neck. Borrowed a friend's amp, Kustom brand, don't recall the model. The pickups are smooth! With the clean channel, It's slightly twangy with good attack, you could call it "spanky", and it sounds a lot like the classic rockabilly tone. With the volume knob on the guitar rolled back a couple notches it really smooths out, especially when using only the neck pickup. When the amp is switched to the high gain channel, it really displays the sensitivity of these pickups. Hard strumming is down & dirty, while a lighter attack almost has a shimmiering quality. Ass the spring reverb and a little chorus and it will send shivers down the spine.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Various blues styles, and other noodlings

Comments: I love these pickups. A slightly higher gain in the bridge wouldn't hurt, but that doesn't mean that these pickups aren't great as they are. I chose Pete based on his eBay rating and the ratings here on this forum. I would definitely buy from him again in the future.
