Sonic evaluation: I'm running a new swamp ash Strat with a Fender Blues Jr. and ADA Rocket A10. There are, to my ear, two distinct 'classic' Strat sounds - there's a 50s thing that's a little brighter with a more pronounced drop in the mids and a 60s thing that's a little more even across the spectrum. Part of that certainly has to do with the maple/rosewood difference in neck construction, but insofar as it can be attributed to electronics, I was after the latter sound. I think Pete's 'vintage' wind is a little closer to the 50s vibe and the 'standard' to the 60s.
In any case, two things stood out immediately: one was balance across the spectrum, which was one of my stated aims for this particular instrument, and the other was how good - and how distinct - each of the switch positions sounded. On most production instruments, I'll find two positions where everything really comes together and the others will be fair, but not overly impressive.
I took this guitar to a friend who's an exceptional studio player here in Atlanta, and after playing for a few minutes, he said "Man, that's really stratty!" What Pete delivered was anything but generic - it's not single coil v. humbucker so much as it is a question of producing exceptional Strat pickups. Hopefully that distinction makes sense, because it's what's made me the happiest about this choice. The Vintage Vibe set just oozes classic personality.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Somewhere in the Americana/AltCountry end of the spectrum

Comments: I'll be ordering a Tele set from Pete when the time comes to build the next one. His pickups absolutely delivered on this project and his pricing is exceptionally competitive.

Tone: smooth as butter!! balanced, nice gain too
Sonic evaluation: 93 Fender Strat Plus. Fender Blues junior, 64 Vibroverb vintage.
They sound far better than any other vintage pickup I have heard besides a real 50's fender Pickup!!!! Best you can ever hope to find. They have hardly any sound on an amp wether with gain or without. These appear to be shielded and are suprisingly quiet for single coil. Best I have ever owned.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Blues, Classic Rock, Rock. Very good match for this and also country. all positions are very useable

Comments: yes I would buy them again, I've played for 8 years, I have a 73 strat, with vintage vibe guitar pickups, overwound and they rock! I love the vintage tone. No others out there like these. Better to me than bardens or kinman or any, I have had them all and they just lacked character. These have it all. This is THE SOUND you are looking for with the standard windings. BYE SOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments: I waited very long to get this "dream Strat" - a '56 relic in white with golden hardware and the guitar was great, when I got it. But the first time I plugged it in, I was really disappointed. It's not my only Strat. and compared to a self composed Strat with original Body and hardware, SRV-neck and Frawlin pickups, I really missed the typical Strat. sound. So - as I had ordered other pickups from Pete before - I asked him for a complete wired Strat pickguard with 3 singlecoils and a 5-way-switch. The day it came I replaced it and here it was - the Strat sound I've been waiting for. Clean and with it's special character on the bridge and very full on middle and neck. So you ( I ) have now the whole range from a Mark Knopfler, Bruce Spingsteen to Bryan Adams sounds.
The best job regarding sound and wiring I've seen on a Strat. in the last 20 years.
If it would be distroyed - God beware - I won't wait a second to order them again.

Comments: Brilliant! It has transformed my strat (late 80s) sound. It gives that "twang"!
Peter gave good advice before I hit the "Buy it Now" button on eBay.
The instructions are great, easy to follow, and gives all the important info.
Each pick up comes with it's own data sheet giving no of windings, impedance, etc.
The middle pich up is counterwound to kill hum in the 2 and 4 positions- it works!
Great product. Buy some before he becomes trendy and a lot more expensive!
I'm in UK, and the postage costs from US to UK were very fair, and a lot less than some have charged.

Comments: If this guitar were stolen I would get the exact sme pickups again, although I have been dying to try the overwound ones. Thes pickups are exactly what they say.."VINTAGE" If you are going to play any kind of metal, obvously they will fall short, but if you are looking for VINTAGE tone, sound, and vibe.... This is the best you will find !!! I have been playing 26 years, and played alot of guitars... this is a wonderful pickup, and Peter is very customer oriented, and will bend over backwards to help you pick out the right pickup.

Perceived output level: Hot! Nice and punchy.
Tone: Excellent. Bright highs, very solid on the low end too.
Sonic evaluation: At the moment I'm just bashing through a couple Boss effects pedals and a Peavey Rage 108 practice amp. These things blew the stock ones away. Doesn't put my 80 buck kit into the realm of the pre-CBS era, but man, what an improvement! Very bright and punchy, and I noticed they seemed to add a little extra to my effects as well.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I just got into playing fingers, ala Mark Knopfler. These things really rock on a pick attack too, though.

Comments: Excellent pick-up for the money. I'd recommend to anybody looking to upgrade. I've been hacking away at guitars for about 10 years now, I actually have more fun building them than I do playing. I'll be looking Pete up again when I'm ready to upgrade the telecaster knock-off.

Model of guitar or bass: Fender MIM Standard Strat
Position: all positions

Other pickups on guitar: None
Artists using this pickup: None that I know of
You musical style(s): Jazz - Blues - Country
Reason for pickup change: Tex Mex pickups were muddy and thin sounding.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: These are not high output pickups. Approx 5 - 6K
Tone: Very nicely balanced
Sonic evaluation: I was playing these through an old solid state amp I've had for the past 30 years. Every guitar and pickup combination tended to sound the same through this amp: bad. I replaced the T/M's with these and they sounded so good through a Fender amp that they had on consignment at the luthiers, I bought a new amp too. Now, I'm going through a Fender Pro Jr. These pickups are sounding better and better. Nicely balanced, very clear. No mud. Crank the amp up a bit and the pups really sing. They seem very articulate and nuanced, very sensitive to your technique. I'm quite impressed and very pleased. Lots of quack in 2 and 4. The bridge pup is pretty bright but lowering it a little should fix that. Generally, I would describe these pickups as very musical, very balanced.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I've been pretty much stuck in A minor blues for the last 30 years but my ambitions range from Robben Ford to Joe Pass. These pickups suit me perfectly.

Comments: 10 out of 10 for value. If they were stolen I'd buy them again but I'd like to try the overwound version. The service from Pete Biltoft was great.

Perceived output level: Wonderful and full - not too hot...very warm and chock-full-of-personality
Tone: Even - everything did what it was supposed to do - perfect!
Sonic evaluation: I use all kinds of stuff - Fender Blues Deluxe (w/Weber Blue Dog), Electar Tube 10 (with external cab), Line 6 Flextone II, etc...the sound of this guitar (with these pickups) with the Blues Deluxe is AMAZING.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Mostly rock, with some blues and jazz thrown in...these pickups produce PERFECT Stratocaster tone - chimey, bright, jangly, blusey...(get the picture?)

Comments: I own lots of stuff - actually just sold my Strat Plus (with the Lace Sensors) because I wanted a less sterile sound. Decided to used the Kramer Focus (which, BTW, is an AMAZING value in its own right) as the backbone of a bastardized semi-custom strat - with Pete's pickups being at the heart of the matter. As the owner of a '59 Gibson Les Paul Junior, I have a sense of what a classic pickup sound is like, and like my 45-year-old P-90, Pete's pickups deliver the goods - a TRULY outstanding VINTAGE sound at a ridiculous price. Great customer service as well. As we speak, he is working on a set of pickups for my new Steinberger Spirit GU7 Custom...my HIGHEST recommendation!
