Features
:
Pickup features: Single coil passive neck position pickup w. increased output
Impedence or other specs: I think Wolfe said just under 9K....?
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Custom "Welsh Flag" Telecaster
Position: neck
Pickup being replaced: Fender- Lace Sensor ("Red")
Other pickups on guitar: Seymour Duncan Hot Rails for Tele (bridge...obviously)
Artists using this pickup: It's a custom order, so I couldn't say
You musical style(s): Alternative rock, Brit pop and the occassional detour down the Metal highway
Reason for pickup change: Lace Sensor was too dark and a bit "flat" sounding. Kind of dull and didn't cut through enough. But in it's defense, I don't think the RED Lace Sensor is really designed to be used as a neck pickup. I just thought it'd be fun! But got bored fairly quickly.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Punchier than a standard neck pup for sure
Tone: Pretty balanced, slightly boosted mids I think. The highs sustain and ring out something beautiful.
Sonic evaluation: I use a limited edition Telecaster whos exact maker I cannot trace, but it was a very luck find for sure. I'm in the process of building back up to getting a better amp - at the moment I'm using a "Guitar50" amp with a Fane speaker. I also use a DOD 285 active direct box / cabinet simulator even when I'm plugged into an amp, because I just love the sound it makes.
As for this pickup (that's what you came hear to read about right?), I was very surprised. For an increased output pickup it shines like anything. It has a beautifully clean tone that literally shimmers and rings out - which, uncannily, is exactly what I asked for in my correspondence with Wolfe!
It's sound is very 'clear' and cuts through well, just like a good single coil should. And in keeping with other Wolfetone reviews, it responds extremely well to me rolling back and forth on the volume and tone controls. With this pickup I have complete control over my distorted sounds!
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I'll try anything once. I played a few of my usual styles with this pickup and it sounded great - but oddly enough, when I first plugged in the guitar after wiring the pickup in (a tense moment that was!), the sound I heard compelled me to do a little blues improv! Don't know why. I think this pickup could do pretty much anything.
Overall Rating
:
10
Comments: Been playing guitar for almost 11 years now. I've never had the money to try out all the top equipment, but I love to dabble, especially with the custom and the unique and rare!
I've yet to settle on an amp, but I love my axe, and my pedals are a DOD Big Pig fat distortion, a Zinky True Grit dual overdrive, a DOD Supersonic Flanger, and a Boss PS-3 pitch shifter. I also have a CryBaby...because everyone needs a wah sometimes right?
I was kind of half expecting this pickup to sound a bit like the Lace Sensor, but in retrospect I don't know why. Maybe because when I think of high-output pickups I think of boosted mids and lost trebles. And how wrong could I be! This is an extremely well balanced pickup. I think one reason could be that Wolfe didn't put one of those lipstick covers on it - he said that they reduce the output and stop the pickup from ringing out. So rather than overwinding the pickup, he omitted the cover and used (I believe) a different guage wire for the coil, and the result is a pickups that SINGS. Enough lows to provide a thick sound, enough mids to give my distortions great dynamic response, and enough highs to come through clearly. For the first time in months, I can actually put my guitar into neck position, turn on the distortion and HEAR the notes I am playing!
I don't know how you lose a pickup, but if it broke I'd be very upset. I'd definitely look to Wolfe again. I place him above the rest because he doesn't give you a SELECTION of products that MIGHT suit your needs. He takes your needs and MAKES a product that he thinks will suit them. And if it doesn't suit, he winds it for you again. And again. And again and again until you're happy. No need in this case though, this pickup is a perfect incarnation of what I asked him for.
