Right output for the 'Lenny' sound! Perfect equalization and instant reward for all those SRV enthusiasts, who are looking for the clean SRV tone. Really hit all the rigth formants and aspects of that sound. Shimmer, quack, dimensionality, Stratness - great! Confronting it to other Rewinders this special set (I don't know about Wolfetone's other sets) nailed my whishes perfectly; the equalization is spot on, a little bit compressed and narrower than other sets, but that's exactly what I wanted.

I play since 25 years and like to assembly projectguitars with special wound PU. So far I dig Lollars, Curt Novaks, Don Mare PU.
I am impressed how perfect Wolfe hit my sound whishes. I got another set from him (Early ZZ Top PAF Sound), which did the same thing! So top marks for that. Only small blem: I took a while to get them. Definitely plays in the top league of boutique Winders, since he can play in the Fender and the Gibson camp equally great.

Perceived output level: About like you would expect from a Strat pickup
Tone: Very smooth, nicely balanced and not like an ice pick.
Sonic evaluation: Using a "Strat" I made in my woodshop. It is a special guitar to me and I wanted some pickups made just for that guitar. I play mostly through a Peavey Classic 30 with only the onboard effects.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Surf guitar and praise and worship. I play most styles of music but with different guitars.

Comments: These pickups are VERY well done. They look like they came from a high end shop with all the attention to detail and a professional finish makes them A+ in cosmetic appeal. Wax potted and taped, cloth/wax leads (nice and long, thank you!) VERY quiet for a single coil pup. No ice pick harshness, just smooth clean and very nicely balanced. They work very well with a wet sound or just by themselves standing naked and plugged into an amp. Distorted they sound good, but that is not what I use them for. I have a Roland CUBE 30 practice amp with the JC clean sound, this guitar just thrives it.

Comments: If it were stolen, I'd slowly strangle the thief. I've just gotten back to playing after a long hiatus away from it. Have played, on and off, for 37 years. I love the beautiful balance and clarity. Wolfe's service is exceptional. I have several guitars with pickups from Lindy Fralin, Bill Lawrence, and Wolfe McLeod. Three different setups for different uses. The one thing they have in common is exceptional sound, with beautiful strength, clarity, and depth. The WolfeTones are the most recent and I'm extremely pleased to have them.

Sonic evaluation: Marshall Super Lead, Fender Bassman, Fender Deluxe, and Soldano SLO. I tinker with the settings alot.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play blues and blues-rock a'la Hendrix, SRV, and Clapton mostly, but delve into some heavey metal riffing on occasion. These are well suited to just about anything I can come up with.

Comments: Great pickups! Wolfe is a great guy who paid attention to every detail of the sound I was looking for. I've been playing for 22 years and have never run across service and dedication like this before. The shipping might have been a little slow at 6 weeks, but big deal they were well worth the wait! He's only one guy working for god knows how many other people. He even sent me video of the pickups being made. That was too cool to see!
These are very dynamic and responsive pickups. Totally responsive to volume and tone controls. No harshness, but plenty of muscle and cutting power when it matters.
If lost or stolen, I would commit murder. I would rampage. I would jump up and down and cry like a baby. Then I would buy some more.

Pickup features: Single coil, passive.
Impedence or other specs: 6 ohms neck, 6.5 middle, 9 bridge.
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Fender '50s reissue strat
Position: all positions
Pickup being replaced: stock Fender '50s reissue pickups
Other pickups on guitar: just these wolfetones now
Artists using this pickup: Rembrant, Picaso, me, and many guitarists too.
You musical style(s): blues, jazz, and all kinds of rock.
Reason for pickup change: Fender '50s reissue pickups sounded "ok", but a little on the thin side. I was gong more for a SRV tone than a Buddy Guy one, so I switched the stock ones out.
Sound
:

Perceived output level: similiar output as texas specials, hot but still produces a clean tone.
Tone: tight bass response, great mids, and crisp highs. these pickups can cut through a mix.
Sonic evaluation: I play my strat through a line6 flextone amp most of the time, but have also played these pickups through a number of amps including my Fender Deville. I wanted a full SRV tone out of my strat, and was actually a bit disappointed by the fender texas special pickups b/c they sounds a bit too muddy, and just weren't clear enough for me. These Wolfetones are perfect for my tastes. I play the neck pickup for most lead work, and when I'm past the 12th fret I like to change positions quickly, and play some open notes. With the wolfetones I can leave my pickup selector where it is (neck position) and still play those open notes and chords without the tone getting all muddy. The bass response from these pickups is so tight, that it blows me away. As for the middle pickup, it has a bunch of midrange to it, so I could use it alone, but I mostly mix it for the 2 and 4 positions. The neck/middle combo is simply amazing. A perfect hollow strat quack tone. The bridge pickup is hotter than the others, but only slightly (if at all) louder. It screams too. I wanted harmonics to fly from this thing, like a humbucker, and I was very picky with the specs for it. I wanted it to have lots of midrange, nice highs that could scream but wouldn't be shrill. I got what I wanted. This bridge pickup is great for heavy gained leads and rhythms, and also for those classic strat tones. Again, the clarity of these pickups is unreal. The neck pickup certainly has that SRV tone to it, but not muddy, very clear.
These pickups are great for blues, rock, clean stuff, and also heavy stuff. They make me want to never put down that old strat.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play rock and blues mainly, but also other styles as well. These pickups are suitable for all applications I can think of, from heavy metal to grunge to blues to ultra clean jazz.

Comments: I've been playing guitar now for 10 years. I've owned lots of guitars, expensive to really cheapos. Currently I have 7 guitar, some with humbuckers, some with single coils. The only thing bad about these Wolfetone pickups is that they make my other guitars sound weak. Now I'll have to get pickups for all my guitars!
I was searching for "that sound", but unfortunatly it only existed in my head, until I put into words for Wolfe what that sound was, and he recreated it through these pickups.
Wolfe is great on customer service, and it's a real custom shop operation. Tell him what you want specifically, and he won't tell you which models you may like, but he'll make pickups to your own specifications, for about the same price as mass produced ones! Incredible deal, get 'em while the prices are still low.

Sonic evaluation: Squire into Soldano Super 60. If they sound like that in a Squire, I can't wait to get a set into my G&L Legacy! 2 other players also had his PUs in their 50' RI Strats, and they sounded VERY fine, clean or dirty, thru a variety of amps. Bridge PU was very ballsy, neck was nice and round, position 2&4 just sat there perfectly, in a band context which is where it really counts.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Sounded great from Aerosmith to Funk to Blues, maybe not metal?

Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Fender '60's reissue Stratocaster
Position: all positions
Pickup being replaced: Stock Fender Japanese "vintage" reissues
Other pickups on guitar: They're all Wolfetone's, baby!
Artists using this pickup: Just the select few who want excellent tone and want the best
You musical style(s): Blues Rock, Hard Rock, Some Heavy Metal and most anything with chunky power chords.
Reason for pickup change: I wanted the best tone I could possibly get (I know, it's like a disease).
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: These pickups are hotter than stock but won't fry the cord between the amp and your guitar (but Wolfe can do that if you really want him to).
Tone: The tone has smooth highs with a bit higher than normal mids. The bass response is excellent for a single coil.
Sonic evaluation: I currently own a MESA/Boogie Studio Calibre DC-2. I don't really care for this amp but I can't afford another amp right now. This amp masks the tone of most guitars so I made my observations using a Line 6 Flextone 60 watt combo with 2 10 inch speakers. I love these pickups!!! They sound great!!! They are very quiet and produce a well rounded sound. The bridge pickup is a bit louder than the rest so the volume is consistent from position to position on the selector switch. I had the pickups wired with a push pull pot so I could go from parallel to series in the 2 and 4 positions for more humbuckerish tones. These pickups even make great humbucker tones as well as to die for single coil tones. The bridge pickup doesn't make you want to cover your ears. I wired it with it's own tone control to make it more flexible but I think you could wire it without and still have great tone. I'm talking smooth, baby! It cuts but without any harshness. The middle pickup has a bit of a different tone than the neck pickup in that it is a bit brighter. This is great for me because it gives me another tone to work with rather than an exact copy of the neck pickup. It also lends clarity to the humbuckerish tones. The neck pickup is nice and clear and doesn't sound too nasaly. It is suitable for both chords and lead work. These pickups are great!!!
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: These pickups (wired in the manner that I have them) are suitable for just about any music with the exception of Death Metal. Just change your amp.

Comments: These pickups are definitely what I needed. I would have Wolfe Macleod make me a new set if I lost them. These pickups are worth every penny. They may be more expensive than regular production line pickups but you can have exactly what you want. Wolfe will rewind them until you like them so you know that you can find your tone!!!
