Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: More power than stock Fender but not "hot".
Tone: Mellow, balanced, great articulation and complexity. I can run it clean or add preamp distortion. Either way it maintains its character. Distorted, it produces a singing tone which is classic blues.
Sonic evaluation: I use a Peavey Delta Blues (30W) with a 15" speaker. Amp gets plenty of treble even with the 15" and also responds well to the pickups richer tone. I have two other tube amps, an Ampeg Jet and a Roland Bolt 60- this p/u sounds great wherever I plug in. I find myself using less overdrive than I used to because the clean tone is so good.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: P/u fits my style well- it's a jazz and blues players dream. It adds a nice balance to the bridge p/u which Wolfe styled after a P-90 at my request.

Comments: I would definitely replace this p/u if it were damaged- I couldn't get over the level of attention Wolfe gave to finding out my playing preferences. This guy knows his stuff- he was able to work from a verbal description of what I wanted in the sound...he nailed it on the first try with both pickups. He will take a p/u back and rework it until he gets it the way you want. Can you beat that? I got these on an Ebay but I would be willing to pay full retail if I had to. I also have a Vintage + neck p/u by Harmonic Design. The Wolfetone surpasses the H.D. in my opinion, has a higher retail price and is not custom designed.
I've been playing 30 years and have accumulated ten guitars, mostly electrics in the $200-500 range. I'm just waiting for Wolfe to come out with a P-90 with "dog-ears".
