Vintage PAF Humbucker clone: Alnico 2 magnets8.5 Bridge output and 7.5 Neck output. I requested raw nickel covers and vintage braided wiring.

I was looking for more lively and balanced sounding pickups - search over!
These are fitted in my '99 Gibson Les Paul Classic with RS Guitarworks premium wiring kit including Jensen PIO caps.
They replaced a set of Seymour Duncan '59's (which replaced the original ceramic pickups).

I was looking for a top notch clean sounding pickup that handled overdrive reasonably well. What I got was a set of pickups from Wolfey that sound great clean and handle a remarkable amount of gain. I've yet to hear them squeal!.
These pickups are absolutely the ones for this guitar.
I play a spectrum of music from Classic Rock to Modern pop and the Dr V's do it all EXTREMELY WELL. I've only ever left one or two reviews on Harmony Central but I was compelled to leave another review because these Dr Vintage pickups are so good.
I play through a 1997 1987x (with the bright cap replaced with a 100pF value cap)through a 1960ax or a 1936 cab depending both with re-issue greenbacks.
Playing clean, these picks are very musical. The bass is definitely there but not boomy. Treble is very audiable but not shrill - no ears will be cut.
With gain - these pickups take it very well. Even with both channels engaged of a Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde pedal these pickups handle it. Using a Zvex Box of Rock, mix of the Les Paul and pickups sounds so right!!!
It's hard to find anything to complain about.
Having never been close to a real PAF, I do not know how close these come but I do know they sound absolutely brilliant.

I would be extremely gutted if my Dr V's got stolen, destroyed or what-have-you. Appart from anything else, it would mean my guitar was gone too!!
Seriously tho, I've had these pickups in situ since early this year and I would be lost without them. Out of curiousity, I tried fitting a set of WCR Goodwood pickups and immediately put the Dr V's back in because the Goodwoods were so wrong. I found them hollow, boomy, bright and simply lacking in comparison. Not what I was after at all.
Before I tried the WCR's I knew I should keep the Dr V's in but, you know when you've got to try something to see if you do have the best but there are times when you should just leave WELL ALONE!!!!!!
If I had another LP I would buy another set of Dr V's in a heart beat. In fact I'm tempted to buy another set in advance of getting that next guitar.

I have this set in a 2004 59 Historic les Paul. I have had numerous pickups in this guitar and have kept up the search for the ultimate PAF tone.

The sound of these pickups in a Les Paul are amazingly good. They have eliminated the "ice pick" effect from this guitar when played in the upper register at higher volumes. The neck pickup is warm but articulate at the same time with almost no muddiness. The bridge pickup is balanced nicely with the neck and does classic ZZ Top tones.

In terms of sound alone, they are the best period. For the price, these pickup are easily the best value out there too. They will never come out of my guitar. My search for tone is over and that is about the best compliment you can give a set of pickups.

Sound is incredible. We could tell as soon as they were wired up. Most pick-ups have a tinny sound when taped on, these were very beefy sounding - clunk - clunk.
Output level seems standard for this style. Used w/a Fender Twin and a Vox AC30.
Tone is balanced, clean shimmers and they're very easy to overdrive.
Style of music is blues rock and they sound perfect.

These would definitely be going in again if they were stolen. I'm also thinking of getting some for an ES-335 and a PRS. We did our first recording of these through a Vox AC30 - Wow!!! I've been playing for about 25 years and my son has for three years.

This pickup is a replica of a normal output, vintage PAF Gibson humbucker. Normal output in vintage terms is around 8K for the bridge and 7.5K for the neck. It uses an alnico 2 magnet with a specific magnetic profile and the materials and construction techniques of the vintage counterparts.
Instrument
:
I installed these pickups in a contemporary Les Paul Custom, not a reissue, in both the neck and bridge positions. They replaced the 490 and 498 Gibson humbuckers. The original pickups sounded harsh in the upper register and simply lacked character.
Sound
:

Although normal output for a vintage pickup, I would say they are low output compared to contemporary pickups. I used them with a JVM 410 combo that has a ton of gain and can easily go from clean to Angus Young, to EVH, to Doug Aldrich. Of course a PAF clone will work great for classic rock, but what may not be obvious is that it can sound awesome for progressive stuff like Yngwie, Randy Rhoads etc. because a low output pickup will retain a certain clarity and note separation even through a high gain amp.

I certainly would purchase these again if they were stolen. I've been playing for 30 years and own several Gibsons as well as several Malmsteen Strats. Even though my playing leans heavily in the direction of neo-classical, progressive rock, I have found that often vintage tone and equipment can compliment that style of playing better than contemporary tone, which I find to be harsh and unmusical.

These have your typical lower out PAF level. My main rig is a 100w Splawn Quickrod into a Scumback loaded Marshall 4x12 cab. The only effect I use is an RMC Picture Wah on occasion. Overall these have a nice balanced tone with some extra chime in the highs. They sound very PAF-ish in my R9's. The neck has the right amount of fullness vs clarity and the bridge has enough edge to cut through without being harsh. I play mostly blues influenced hard rock styles from Led Zeppelin and AC/DC to Guns N Roses. I'd recommend these to anyone who wants a traditional/vintage sounding PAF style humbucker.

If someone managed to steal these out of my guitar I'd be thankful they didn't steal it too! But hell yeah, I'd replace these in a heartbeat. Wolfe is a great guy who makes amazing pickups. I doubt you could go wrong with anything he winds. If I get any other humbucker equipped guitars I'll probably try out some of Wolfes other pickups just to have a variety in tone. The Dr Vintages are staying in my Les Pauls!

The Dr. Vintage pick-ups that I have recieved in april 2007 (set number 205) are a humbucking PAF-clone type pick-up. They have medium resistance, vintage braided wiring, nickel plated covers, and zebra bobbin.
Short of having a great example of an original PAF pick-up from the fifties, this pick-up is the best boutique pick-up I have had the privilege to try! The Dr. Vintage actually sounded better to my ears than any Seymour Duncan model, original T-tops or DiMarzio pick-ups.
They were not overly high-output, did not produce a muddy or deaf tone, and kept a consistent tone when volume was rolled off.
Their clarity and definition is unmatchable, the blooming of the note is comparable to a PAF pick-up, and the sustain is great! Clearly a great pick-up. The perfect match for the guitar I have put them in!
Instrument
:
I have tried the Dr. Vintage pick-up in a 2001 Gibson Les Paul 1958 Historic Reissue.
I have compared this set to the original Classic '57, a 490-498T match, a set of burstbuckers, a set of T-tops, a JB-Jazz combinaison, SD Custom-Custom and Di Marzio Fred pick-ups. My preference clearly went every time for the Dr. Vintage pick-ups.
I have changed the pick-ups in this guitar in an attempt of reaching the holy grail vintage Lp sound... as many other guitar player are striving to achieve...
Sound
:
No Opinion
I have tried the Dr. Vintage pick-ups in tweed Fender champs, Fender Blues Jr. and a 4X12 Marshall JCM 900 amps. The tone achieved from these matches were pretty much very balanced, as if the pick-ups were not colouring the sound towards a specific range, unlike some other sets (490-498T). The Dr. Vintage were suitable in every position and achieved the "woman tone" very pleasantly when using both positions and a roll-off of the neck pick-up tone button.

The sound of these pickups is amazing! They are, by far, the closest to real PAFS that I have heard in the aftermarket pickup market. The note separation is unbelievable, and the note "bloom" is head and shoulders above the other boutique pickups that I have tried(which are almost all of them!)
These pickups are perfect for classic rock and blues. They clean up beautifully with the twist of the guitar's volume knob.
I couldn't recommend them more highly!!!!

I give these pickups the highest rating. They are the standard bearer by which all others will hereinafter be judged, as far as I am concerned.
