Features :
Pickup features: Humbucker PAF Type
Impedence or other specs: 7,6 Ohms

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: Epihone Sheraton (35 years old)
Position: neck
Pickup being replaced: all others I had in it before, really a lot
Other pickups on guitar: Wolfetone Deanbucker
Artists using this pickup: ???
You musical style(s): Soul Funk Jazz Rock Blues
Reason for pickup change: I?ve never really iked the sound of the guitar, but I knew it could be better, because of its acoustic sound.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: Old PAF-Type, I think a litte less than usual PAF, but what a sustaiiiin
Tone: very, I said very balanced. crystal clear highs, cutting mids, tight bass. Overall I would say it is a thight sounding pickupd. It transports every detail you put into your guitar with your fingers accurately. And the acoustic properties of your guitars shine trough. It doe?snt colour your sound and you can?t hide anything.
Sonic evaluation: I?ve got a Wolfetone Deanbucker in ebay for really little money. I have bidden for it just out of curiosity, because I?ve read good reviews. First I put it just for a try in my Peavey Rockingham (Gretsch Style) Jazz Guitar, which always sounded to dull for me.
I have to say, I did not play humbucker equipped guitars since years, because I like definition, sparkle, detail, accuracy. I want to hear exactly what I play.
That said, I was amazed how good this guitar sounded suddenly. But I really intended to put this pickup in an about 35 years old Epiphone Sheraton (by Gibson - must be one of the earliest under Gibson, which was a gift from my father in law.
Well, I never really played this guitar, although I like the look and the playability of it. So I took the originial Pickups out and tried (withouht satisfaction): 25 years old DiMarzio PAFs (a little bit thin sounding, but not bad), Gibson Classic 57 (harsh highs, boomy bass, to much output), Gibson P94 (too fat, too much bass, treble was okay, though not so bad, I was?nt quite there), Ibanez Super 58 (no personality, somehow steril), Bartolini (super in Single coil mode, but should?nt it sound like a 335, humbucker mode too dull, middy), Joe Barden TWO TONE (I just had a bridge model - way too much output in neck positiona and a bit hi fi sounding, just not sweet, but really cutting), The pickup from the Peavey Rockingham (also too dull and no dynamics) - You see, I?ve really tried hard to make it sound like a 335 should (think Larry Carlton). At last, I thouhgt It must be the guitar, just not a good one. (maybe not enough played) A friend of mine has an older Gibson 335 and compared to his guitar (clear and sweet), mine was a poor looser.
Then I put the Wolfetone Deanbucker in it - Whow, what a different animal it was suddenly. Accurate bass, pleasing mids (clear, not too fat, just right) clear, bright highs a good presence and a LOT of overtones appeared. I thought, not spectacular but finally it sounds like it should. This impression was, when I played with my modded (Cabinet, Tubes, Speaker) fantastic sounding Ashdown Peacemaker (Clean Channel).
Then I tried my other amp rig (VHT - GP3 Preamp, TC-Electronics G-Force, VHT 2/50/2 Stereo Power Amp) - What was this??? I was instantly in Gary Moore territory - I could NAIL his sound on his Blues Albums without just turning one knob on the preamp. The guitar sustained for days and I?ve never had before such a 3D distortion sound, so much overtones!!! The colour of the sound changed with every slight change in picking, fantastic. A new guitar was born!!
But how does it sound in bridge position, I thought?
Man, I can tell you, it sounded even better.
Finally, I left it there and ordered a matching humbucker at wolfetone via internet. Wolfe was so helpful and friendly and answered my mails quickly. Two or three weeks later, I had my new neck pickup sent to EUROPE, AUSTRIA and put it into the guitar instantly and it was a PERFECT match!!
My pickups are equipped with ALNICO II magnets and I think this is the reason why they breathe, and talk and scream and funk and rock and jazz like I want.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Soul Funk Jazz Rock Blues

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: These pickups have turned the guitar into one of my favourites altough I never liked humbucker equipped guitars. I am building guitars and have tried a lot and have a lot of experience. I play for 30 years, not professionally, but I think I have a good ear for a good sound. I would surely replace them, I cannot imagine better humbucking pickups. My search for this particular guitar is definately over.
