Features :
Pickup features: Humbucker, hot PAF type
Impedence or other specs: 8.6K

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: 1953 Les Paul goldtop conversion
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Original short magnet PAF 8k without cover
Other pickups on guitar: Original PAF
Artists using this pickup: Me (LOL)
You musical style(s): mixed bag
Reason for pickup change: Heard good things about Wolfe's Marshallhead wind, and he had previously rewound a pickup for me with excellent results.
Used this particular guitar as a test mule, as the guitar just didn't quite sound as good as it should even though it had PAFs in it.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: Hot vintage type, 8.6k, like a ballsy PAF. Think Antiquity, Rolph, etc...
Tone: To my ears, this pickup has a distintive midrange bark to it, but still retains clarity and bite on the highs without being strident. Seems to have good bass punch. Throaty is a good term. Reminds me of the bridge pickup in my Burst.
Sonic evaluation: Seems to hold up at decent volumes so far without microphonics.
I've used it through the following:
50 W non master Marshall w/Marshall 4x12 65w Celestions
Peavey Classic 30 w/Eminence Patriot Swamp Thang speaker
Yamaha DG80 w/EVM12L speaker

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I like to play rock, metal, blues, and fusion type stuff. With the output and voicing, it probably is best as a bridge pickup, as this was a bridge specific wind. He also has a neck wind which I haven't tried.

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: I have two more on order, so I like them! The guitar I put it in actually belongs to my brother, and he likes the pickup so much he won't let me have it back! The guitar sounds better now than it did with the 8k original PAF in it. If I could change anything, it would be to add a touch more chime and harmonics (PAF style zing) to the highs without sacrificing the tone. It's pretty damn good as-is though. I really like the voicing, it comes close to the sound in my head. Some (not all) aftermarket PAF clones can be harsh or strident on the highs to get more harmonics, and that usually results in thinner sounding plain strings to me. I like a certain tonal girth the plain strings with clarity. Also, some makers (not all) hotter PAF winds can sound nasal and weird. Wolfe's Marshallhead wind does not sound nasal.
I've had experience with PAFs, Rolphs, Voodoo, Antiquity, Fralin, Tom Holmes, and Tim White pickups. Wolfe is every bit equal to any of the aftermarket pickup makers. He may not be a well known name, but he will be.
I've been playing almost 25 years now, and own or have owned many desireable vintage guitars.
Give Wolfe a shot, he's a good guy with a good product.
