Comments: This is the first time I`ve had pickups rewound, and boy did I hit the jackpot. I would love to hear the other boutique humbuckers (Lollar,Fralin,Voodoo,Timbuckers,W.C.R.`s,etc.) But I doubt anyone does better work and is easier and fair $ to deal with.I really think Wolfe must love his work, and it shows!

Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): 60's and 70's style classic blues, blues rock, hard rock
Reason for pickup change: Looking for "my" sound
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Magically Hot PAF -Classic tones with an attitude
Tone: Balanced, clear , articulate, smooth
Sonic evaluation: I'm using a Tokai Love Rock w/CTS 500k audio taper pots and Sprague Orange Drop caps into a vintage 100w Garnet BTO head with a 2x12 cab loaded w/Celestion G12H80's. No f/x. For lead tones, full out, the neck pup is very smooth and nails the Gary Moore/Peter Green/early Clapton tones. With the volume rolled back it becomes very bell like. The bridge pup can scream or sing again depending on the guitar volume and tone settings. That classic PAF double tone and note bloom (harmonic feedback) is a cinch with both pups. For rythym work, the neck pick up is excellent for both smooth chording and delicate picked phrases. The bridge pup can be nice and crunchy or very chimey. Both pick ups are extremely clear, articulate and open sounding. If you have bad technique these pups will show you up!
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I can play a wide range of different styles. What I enjoy playing the most is classic British style blues and blues rock and most of my writing is in this vein. I know a lot of people don't care for that style anymore, but I'm now playing for my own pleasure so I play what I want. Depending on how you have these pups set up, they could be used for a wide variety of different syles. Set them close to the strings and they can get very aggressive. I have them set a little farther from the strings to take advantage of their sweet spot. They tend to open up a bit more when set a bit farther from the strings.

Comments: I've been playing for 35 years. Short of "stardom" I've pretty much done it all from touring to recording to commercial sessions to big band stuff. I gave up playing completely a few years back and sold off all my gear. I've gotten back into playing in the last while and have picked up some great sounding gear to use for my own pleasure. I bought the Tokai because it had great acoustic resonance and tone and was planning on upgrading the electronics right from the get go. I knew the sound I wanted and I'm very picky about my tone. I did a ton of research into different pick ups. I ran into Wolfe on an internet forum and we began talking about a set of custom wound pups. After a lot of communication back and forth I gave Wolfe the go ahead to whip me up a set of pick ups and he nailed exactly what I was after. It's not often you meet somebody who will take the time and care to make sure his customer gets exactly what they are after. Wolfe is a very, very special person. If I needed another set of pick ups, he is who I would call...no question.

Reason for pickup change: Couldn't find or afford a decent set of original PAFs
Sound

No Opinion
Perceived output level: Perfect....like a really GOOD set of original PAFs
Tone: Sonically balanced
Sonic evaluation: I use this Les Paul through many combinations of amps in my collection.I wanted something to make this guitar really have a superb tone. The pickups that I sent to Wolfe were a Duncan 59 bridge and a Gibson standard humbucking, out of a 335 reissue.I asked him to wind the Duncan for the bridge position.
I haved owned alot of guitars in my lifetime....I've been playing 37 years, had the priveledge of owning an original 'burst, and have been through other original PAF pickups. What I asked Wolfe to do was wind these babys like a good set of PAF,complex in tones/overtones without being too hot.He absolutely nailed the tone I was desiring. Each pickup has it's own personality, and the blend in the middle position is ever so sweet.Clean or dirty, these pups sound fantastic.Wolfe doesn't like to pot his pickups unless desired by the customer, and he assured me that he wraps his wire and tape tight....he feels that unpotted pickups are more open and airy, and he is right. These are great rewinds.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play different styles, but with the Les Paul it's alot of blues and rock

Comments: I contacted Wolfe after reading comments about his work.I found him to be pleasantly professional, answering my emails promptly....he even took the time to personally call me about minute details.
Wolfe asked for an equipment list that I use (pedals, amps, ect.) and if possible,an MP3 of my playing---this shows me that he is not about "stamping out" one style of pickup for everyone.I don't believe that too many of his pickups sound the same because of this close attention to personal detail.
If something ever happened to these pickups,I wouldn't hesitate to have more made....but I'm not waiting till then.I am in the process of gathering more stuff to send to Wolfe to rewind.I'm thinking about getting my T-tops rewound to the same specs!
If you have any dead pickups or some that just don't do it for you,you owe it to yourself to contact Wolfe.

Pickup features: passive
Impedence or other specs: designed for Gibson Doubleneck
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: EDS1275 Gibson Doubleneck
Position: all positions
Pickup being replaced: Those unbelievably unadulterated crappy & totally useless stock 490pups
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup: don't know, but everyone should be
You musical style(s): all over the place
Reason for pickup change: Well, just as the previous guy complains about the 490/6 pups
on his stock LP, these pups are sterile, brittle, harsh, buzzy,
bassy, tinny, nasal....just plain useless! Gibson should be ashamed
of itself for putty pure garbage on $$$ guitars. At least anything
over a thou. should all come with 57's. But they don't and thats
whats great about having a guy like Wolfe do custom rewinds.
Sound
:

Perceived output level: I believe Wolfe came in around 10K for the six string side and a bit less for the 12
Tone: Well balanced, warm. Good separation.
Sonic evaluation: I'm using a modded '78 100w Marshall, and both a DSL & TSL, plus a Fender HRD and a line 6 AX212. Even though I had this guitar for nearly a couple of years I hardly played it because I simply could not
get into it for its sound quality. Although it wasn't until recenty
that I even bothered to bring it into my workplace and try it in the Marshalls. This is where I can make some noise! Anyway, I was appalled by how horrible it sounded. A really big thing for me was the fact that the 12 string always has a very pronounced nasally midrange bump that is totally unmusical sounding. The neck is too muddy, the bridge is way to brittle and harsh and together is bad too. I suspect this has to do with all the overtones produced and clashing by that many strings. When distortion was used, the 12 became an ugly mess. The 6 string side neck had an outrageous bassiness and muddiness when the gain was going, even with the bass turned off. The bridge was tinny, thin and harsh. All the usual complaints by those with Gibsons with these pups.
I told Wolfe about all these concerns, especially wanting to get rid of that damn nasalness on the 12. I also hoped for good separation between the notes on the strings, especially with distortion. I've had another doubleneck a ways back by another manufacturer and I experienced the same effect with the 12's, despite pup changes on that guitar also. Other than that I basically asked him to give me what we all want......warmth, balance, great clean and that ballsy singing quality when pushed. I told him to please make sure he gets it right the first time because I didn't want to be taking that whole thing apart and back together again. Well, I crossed my fingers and damn if that guy didn't make me some of the finest sounding pickups for that guitar. I'll also be damned that he was very successful in cleaning up and balancing out the 12 string side. Individually, the pups sound fantastic as well as in combination. The same with the the 6 string side. This guitar has that real peculiar sound with both neck and bridge on together that some LP's also have. Anyone whose listened to Jimmy Page live or even that sound he gets on the stairway to heaven solo on TSRTS film knows what that sound is.....I love it. Well, this guitar has it real deep, especially when coupled with a Marshall. This is the second job he's done for me. Previously, he's redone another couple of humbuckers and a couple of single coils. Again, he turned crap sounding pups into gold, either by changing magnets and rewinding or if the magnets are good, then just rewinding. He even took the trouble to get a friends 12 string to test my rewinds in order to get it right the first time.
He really puts in a lot of work to get the sound you want. Wolfe's a genius here.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play all styles. Since these pups are balanced, I can use them for anything

Comments: I said it all above. The only drawback here might the waiting, but, then again, you are getting a custom design and its finally worth it.
Obviously many of these stock pups are unacceptable, so yes, they would have to be replaced and I just couldn't necessarily take the chance with production pickups. If I had gone that route, it would have been pure guesswork to find the right ones, if at all, and I'd bet dollars to doughnuts I would have still beeen stuck with that ugly nasalness. I'm going to be using this as a main instrument now. Wolfe's THE man!

Instrument

Model of guitar or bass: Peavey Predator
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Stock Peavey
Other pickups on guitar: 2 other WolfeTone's
Artists using this pickup: None, it's a custom
You musical style(s): Metallica to SRV to Chili Peppers to Satriani to Pumpkins to . . .
Reason for pickup change: Stock Pickups were pitiful. I was craving better tone.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: VERY HOT. I ordered it high output and thats what I got. It is too hot for my peavey amp, but so are most pu's . . .
Tone: Incredible! I asked him to model the Metallica Live Shit Mexico City Tone. And he got it!
Sonic evaluation: I'm running this into a cheapo Peavey Transtube. But it still sounds great. There was too much high end shrill when I started. But that went away when I turned the highs on my amp down. I tried the pickup with no EQ and it was my amps fault. This thing is heavy as hell. But the clean tone is swet and ringing(I asked him to make it like the Fade to Black clean tone intro). The pickup sounds incredible clean, very versatile, and then is incredible for heavy stuff. It doesnt sound bad for other styles too, just its not geared towards them.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play mostly metallica like stuff, but this pickup works well for anything I can think of, including blues.

Comments: If this was stolen I'd have a new one ordered as soon as I could. I've been playin almost a year and a half. I love this pickusp sound in general. I wish my amp could handle its high output, but I did order it that way. I've never heard a stock pickup(DiMarzios and SD's) that compares with this one. Wolfe got the tone I was looking for while still making it very versatile. But since tehre is NO such thing as perfect tone for us mere mortals I would give it a 9. But in the menu it has fantastic value written next to 10 and thats what this pickup is.
